  • When you are going through the menopause it can be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it’s important to know that there is an end to it.
    So, this week on A.Vogel Talks Menopause I thought I would take a look at how to know when menopause is over, including how long it lasts, what are the signs that menopause is finally over and how you can feel afterwards.

    I have been going through menopause for 11 years really struggled hot flushes, fatigue , always hungry, weight gain.joint pain panic attacks anxiety,unable to sleep.was this me for the rest of my life as it sucks.finally I made it to the 1 year mark (no periods) but could feel myself still cycling without the period..Then after 13months I have a period, not heavy like they had been.That knocked me down and I really thought meanopause symptoms don’t end. But coming up to another year without periods. I feel very different. I don’t have the bloat or the water weight anymore. I can’t remember , the last cross words I had with my husband or the late night snacks I use to eat.in-fact I have gone off anything sweet or salty I don’t snack anymore. I want to wake up every morning life now has a bit of interest for me again.i believe I am getting better as each day goes on. This lady in this video knows what she’s talking about and that’s what made me have my say. keep up the good work

    My period stopped at 51, no HRT, no other symptoms before or after. I reasoned it was because I've been on regular exercise for about 20 years before menopause. In fact, I often prided myself for not having menopausal symptoms. Then, 6 years after menopause, on my 56th birthday, the cacophony of horrible symptoms (high BP, brain fog, hot flashes, night sweats, body aches, Insomnia, etc) visited me, throwing me off balance. Within 2 months, I became a shadow of my old self, lost so much weight due to confusion and anxiety. It was during the covid era, no free movement, and hospitals were too busy. Then, I got the proper diagnosis from a very kind doctor. As I struggled to heal myself, I found myself hooked into several of your UA-cam lectures. The rest is history. I sincerely cannot thank you enough. Thanks, once again. ❤️

    I started perimenopause at age 43 and didn’t hit menopause until age 60-1/2. 17 years of hot flashes! My doctor told me women could have hot flashes for 20 more years after menopause. I’m almost 63 and the hot flashes have not stopped.

I get numbing in both arms and legs and in my lower face, and I get a feeling of a 50lb weight on my arms and legs, too. It can last 24 hours, but it always goes away. It probably doesn't help that I have fibromyalgia too

    Im 61 my periods stopped at 46, I have hot flushes still and weight gain, feel like crying regularly. My mum sailed through hers but after 15 years this is a joke. As for libido that ship sailed 10 years ago, I have read avoid currys, hot drinks, alchol the list goes on why we should have to give up on that, I might as well have joined a nunery. After having the children its a bit rich that we have to go through this torture aswell as childbirth , and yes Iv tried( everything )we dont even get it named after us , i mean MENAPAUSE who came up with that. I recently met a lady in her 70s, and she was still suffering, sorry girls but as a friend told me its over when your dead Good luck : )

      I blame, a lot, on menopause! Everything from fallen arches to acne! But after 15 years, it maybe something, more. Check with your doctor. My sister was going through it from age 38 to 65, but got relief once her doctor worked out a menu and vitamins for her to take. She lost 30 pounds, as well. :-)

    I had periods in October 2021 when I was 48 years old and then no periods, so in October 2022 I thought I had menopause but in May 2023 again I had periods for 5 days though not very heavy, and after that till now no periods, so now in July 2024 I think I have menopause but can't be sure. But the journey is tiring. Waist pain, body ache , joint pain...and nobody understands, they still expect me to be that young woman who never gets tired.
    I had surgery (adenomyomectomy and myomectomy) in April 2020 so my doc won't give me hrt, I mean this is what he suggested.
    I am waiting for the day when I will be normal again. I often listen to you and your words make me feel better.

      It is quite rare for the menopause to go on for so long, often other health issues are also a factor. I would ask your doctor for a general health check for iron, thyroid function and vitamin D and B12 levels, these can all cause menopause-like symptoms.

      Hi Shirelle
      Unfortunately, it is very difficult to say how long symptoms may last as it is different for every woman, sorry. Most women, however, do see symptoms starting to ease off after several years without periods. If symptoms don't ease off or get worse then it is best to see your doctor as other health issues could be to blame.

      Unfortunately, coming off HRT can bring symptoms back and it can sometimes take quite a while for the body to readjust to the sudden loss of hormones due to this. Have you tries the herb sag? This can often be helpful for flushes and sweats and usually works quite quickly.

    Thanks for the info! I'm confused...I had my period last week but my blood tests last year suggested I'm in menopause. I haven't had a period since last February. I am currently taking HRT. Does HRT cause periods or can I still just be having periods and not totally menopausal yet? My gyno says she knows women still bleed even after being suggested in menopause. I'm getting an ultrasound done next week to make sure I'm okay.

    • @AvogelCoUk
      @AvogelCoUk  5 років тому +1

      HRT raises your hormones up to near enough pre-menopause levels (this is how it stops menopause symptoms by fooling your body into thinking there are plenty of hormones). However, in doing this it can also bring your periods back. Some women will also still get the odd period on HRT so it could be a number of things. It is good to get this checked out so glad to hear that you are doing this.

    I am 51 and have not had a period for over 2 years. It has been absolutely the worst 2 years(actually 3 counting the year previous)of my life. Every conceivable symptom to the max. I take progesterone and estriol that I buy online, a pump of each morning and evening, and 2 squirts DHEA under my tongue each day. I believe they help because when I forget a dose or two my nightsweats come on with even more of a vengeance. Are these hormones safe? Am I making my symptoms last longer? I definitely don't want to take prescription HRT, but still not sure if the creams are necessarily best either. I have an aunt who is close to 70 and still suffering symptoms after 20 years....so afraid that is my fate.

      It is so difficult to say as it is different for every one, sorry. If you've had flushes for this long then maybe check with your doctor. Other health issues such as overactive thyroid, low vitamin D, diabetes and heart disease can all trigger flushes and sweats so your doctor can test for them just to rule them out.

      Many women find that symptoms ease or stop over time. If you are still getting symptoms after 5 years or more then it is wise to check with your doctor. Other health issues such as anaemia. thyroid disfunction, vitamin D or B12 deficiency, diabetes and heart disease can all cause symptoms that are identical to menopause ones!

      Hi
      This is a really difficult question to answer as it will be different for every woman, sorry. It may depend on your age, if you had the operation before, during or after your menopause, your general state of health, if you have any other ongoing health issues and even your diet and lifestyle.
      Have you spoken to your doctor regarding any support you may be able to get? If they can't help you further then acupuncture can often be beneficial.

Its now got quite a bit worse...severe hot flashes, night sweats, anxiety is so horrible, crying etc..my cycle is skipping every other month now...though I'm still experiencing symptoms like im having a cycle. All this to say in the video she said menopause is 5-7 yrs i believe...is that the WHOLE PROCESS FROM PERI TO POST OR JUST MENOPAUSE?

    • @AvogelCoUk
      @AvogelCoUk  Рік тому

      Hi Tanya
      The whole process is different for every woman, some will have a short time and for others it can be a good number of years. However, on average, from the time hormones first start to change (perimenopause) to the point where you are two years without periods (post menopause) is about 5-7 years.

    Having had a total abdominal hysterectomy due to severe endometriosis 4 years ago, I was suddenly plunged into surgically induced menopause. Due to the severity of the endometriosis I had to go on tibolone for a year, then a very low dose estrogen only hrt. I'm not suffering from mood swings, or night sweats. I don't have hot flashes if I keep caffeine to a minimum, and drink lots of water. I take magnesium and calcium, and always make sure I look after myself as best I can, but my main symptom is fatigue. Constant daily exhaustion. I find it very difficult to function, and complete daily tasks without feeling the need to sleep. I don't sleep well at all in the night, but if I do I'm still exhausted. Do you think Its because of the low estrogen dose. I cannot increase the dose because of the chance of endometrial foci stimulation. Is there anything that could be used in addition that won't interact.

    • @AvogelCoUk
      @AvogelCoUk  4 роки тому

      Hi Katherine
      Fatigue can be caused by a number of health issues that can be confused with menopause ones. Low iron, low thyroid function, low vitamin D and B12 are common culprits so it is a good idea to ask your doctor to test for these just to rule them out.
      You could also try the herb Maca as this is known to help with fatigue; I usually recommend a liquid one, if you can get this, if not then look for a 500mg capsule for best benefits.

I was very upset because after all the sleepless nights and hot flushes I felt as if I was back at the start again. I saw my doctor who put me on the pill for three months. This was a much needed 'holiday' from my continual emotional and physical sufferings and actually my symptoms have not returned as badly. I took my last pill about two months ago.
