  • The Shoei GT Air 3 is Shoei's new premium sports touring full face helmet that is certified to ECE 22-06.
    It is a similar spec'd helmet to the Shoei GT Air 2 but obviously a safer helmet. From 10 metres you would not tell the two helmets apart. Shoei has the same audience in mind so the core fundamentals are identical.
    A modern, reasonably aggressive design with a subtle but still distinct rear spoiler. A drop-down, sun visor. A semi-integrated, Sena comms. system. And changeable inner parts for a custom fit.
    A GT-Air will never be as quiet as a Neotec, but as Shoei did when it launched the Neotec 3, they have tried to make the new GT-Air quieter than its predecessor. They have made two changes that supposedly have an impact on noise. The first is a rounder, less pointed chin profile that will apparently create less turbulence. The second is longer cheekpads that extend further towards the back of the helmet to prevent air coming into the helmet at the back of the neck.
    The chin vent, whose primary function is to help to desist the visor has not really changed, but the brow vent has. It sits a little further forward and so will increase airflow into the helmet.
    There is a new visor for the GT-Air 3 that is distinguished by a thicker rib that runs along the its lower edge. This will help prevent twisting and distortion in the visor, which can ultimately lead to noise and water ingress. The GT-Air 3 now has an official crack position. The other changes to the visor are that it now has a lock position, and that it has to be raised from the centre rather than the left. A locking mechanism is now mandatory under 22-06.
    There are perhaps only two other changes that are worthy of note. The first is a thinner neck strap, along with a smaller micro-ratchet fastener. Both will play a part in making the helmet more comfortable to ride in. It is by weaving strands of steel into the strap that Shoei was able to maintain the strap’s strength whilst reducing its width. The last change worthy of mention, although that is debatable, is a larger chincurtain.
    Everything else is pretty much as it was. A sun visor that meets the EN 1830 standard for sunglasses. A comfortable lining that holds the helmet firmly in place, yet which wicks sweat away from the skin. A Pinlock 120 anti-fog insert. And, of course, a semi-integrated comms. system.
    The comms. system offers either Bluetooth or Mesh functionality. Obviously, it is powered by Sena. In fact, it is the same unit that is used for the Neotec.

    fact that they had to modify the design to meet the new standard makes me wander if the expensive helmets are really any safer. Great review as usual.

    Excellent vid, as always. Particularly like seeing the side by sides with the GT Air II & the Neotec III. Personally I wouldn’t hear the train because I’d be too focussed on a quarter of wine gums too.

    It's good they've finally put a smaller crack position in because sometimes you just need to open it a tiny bit but you can't on the gt-air 1. Tell Shoei to put that crack position on the Neotec it's ridiculous they've taken so long to do it.

    • @Motolegends
      @Motolegends  8 місяців тому +2

      Apparently, because of the complexities involved with the rotating chin bar, it’s quite difficult for them to make a crack position work. But they know it’s an issue. CP

    The larger chin curtain makes putting the helmet on and off challenging.

    Please tell me which Shoei helmet might be best for me ? I’m 65, ride Harley touring bikes, with a round head ? I Don’t Race, would prefer comfort & quiet . I definitely would want a sun screen shield . Thanks

    Hi! Thanks for the review. I'm curious about one point - looking at the 2 and 3 side-by-side photos in your e-mail, it looks like the visor hinge is further forward, reducing the size of the visor. Does it have significantly reduced peripheral vision?

    • @Motolegends
      @Motolegends  8 місяців тому +2

      We’re looking into it, as there may be a kind of optical illusion going on here, related to the less pointy nose. Our initial thinking is that, whilst the GT Air3’s visor affixes further back on the helmet, the viewing area, and thus the field of vision, are the same. We’ll be doing some more work on this. CP

    question for the chap in the cap or anyone who knows
    I wonder why Shoei has two tiers of safety levels with their shells AIM and AIM+
    I really want to buy the GT Air 3 but keep wondering why it only AIM and not AIM+ since the Plus offers a stronger and lighter shell from what i understand.
    the neotec 3 for instance is AIM+ and very similar to the GT air
    and if so how big is the difference between the AIM and AIM+.
    thank you

    Personally the reason I’d never have a flip lid is that the flip element can break upon impact. See Sharp tests which tells how many times the mechanism broke in their tests. Yes they are more convenient but not worth the risk to your chin. In their testing for the Neotec 2 the latch mechanism only stayed in place 70% of the time. Not good enough in my opinion.

    Just to add the Neotec 3 does not have as much room in the chin area as the GT air, I have a GT air 2 and was fitted for the neotech 3 and there wasn't enough room between my chin and the chin guard. I don't have a particular pronounced chin either. Hope that's helpful

    • @Motolegends
      @Motolegends  8 місяців тому +3

      Funnily enough we came across that just yesterday. And what we can now see is that, as with the GT-Air3, Shoei has given the chin a rounder profile to reduce noise. In so doing, they have reduced the amount of ‘wiggle room’ for the chin. CP

      @@Motolegends I purchased a Neotec 3 and noticed it's more hugging around the chin than the Neotec 2. Not a deal killer for me but worse in the same shell size it's tighter around the upper head also and causing slight but constant pressure. I wonder if to comply with the new standards Shoei made the shell thicker and therefore a slightly smaller diameter inside. I might try a thinner crown liner if I can get one.

    I have the Neotec3, a lot of the new features are in common with GTAir3. So far I love it, they fixed almost all the things I hated in Neotec2, however the wind noise is still there, A LOT of it. I am wondering what I can do about that? If I put my palm on the left or right side of the neck, the sound is gone, so clearly it enters through the gaps in the neck skirt. On my Schubert C5, that never happens since is a full piece and it goes around (Neotec3 still is superior to the C5 on most of the other things). The weirdest part is that only the noise enters the helmet, no the cold air too. For reference, I owned Neotec2 and I still own a GTAir2, also a Schubert C4 Pro Carbon and a Schubert C5.

    • @Motolegends
      @Motolegends  8 місяців тому

      Might need to be custom fitted, although parts aren’t here yet. It should be quieter than the Schuberth, but that depends on the fit. You need to see your dealer, and get them to fit it properly. Problem should then go away. CP

    • @wraymogg
      @wraymogg 8 місяців тому

      @@Motolegends Thank you, sadly my dealer never does custom fits, and you are 5k miles away :) Probably I will order thicker cheeks when they will be available - maybe I'll have some luck. Anyway, together with my Klim jacket, that has a neck protection on the outside, it is perfect. I am amazed how good Neotec3 is and how disappointed I am with my Schubert C5, even if they tried to copy the Shoei design...

    • @wraymogg
      @wraymogg Місяць тому

      @@markholmes5695 Of course ear plugs does the job, however these helmets are presented as they are as quiet as Schubert C5. They are not. At least on bikes where you take the wind in the face. Since last time, I custom fitted it. It improved a little, but it still doesn't compare to the C5. It is the design of the neck roll. The air enters through the back part of the neck, at least on naked bikes. If you are behind a windshield, nothing I say applies.

    Shoei if you read this as you should, pay attention: We need future neotec 3, gtair4 and nxr3 or even a new model to have:
    Much Better multi stage adjustable ventilation where its fully open position leads to a -1 degree Celsius inside temperature vs outside temperature instead of the same inside and outside like this gtair 3.
    A drop down sunvisor that goes lowdown not to get on our field of view BUT with a dropdown button next to the base of the helmet not the side as it ruins the Aesthetic completely not to mention its aerodinAmics! Pay attention to the competition HJC's dropdown sunvisor system and Arai ESPECIALLY Arai's interior lining at it is the absolute best in confort it slides down our heads butter smooth every single time and That is all we dream of in a top of the line sport touring helmet.
    As for 2023 me and my club rider friends all went for the better sport touring helmets of the moment hjc rpha71 and rpha 91.
