Both are worth watching. Both are only 12 episodes too. Very unique, iconic stuff. Definitely worth keeping.

Everyone loves formulaic art.
Even if you say you don't, what you don't realize is you just love BAD formulaic crap. It's still formulaic.
For those trying to figure out the anime that appears at 17:03, it's technically _Pop Team Epic,_ which spent the first two-three minutes of its premiere episode pretending to be a completely different anime named "Hoshiiro Girldrop" about a boy who lives with an idol girl or something.
Adding this to the case file of "perfectly good series ruined by the insistence on adding a romance subplot". At least the theme song is a banger.
The worst part of Nuku Nuku Dash is when they reference "All previous Nuku Nuku are dead". Just deep sixing the funny Nuku Nuku in one line along with your heart. 😢
Y'know, we don't see the bleeding nose gag anymore. I'm gonna guess that modern medicine figured out a way to prevent / treat that particular malady?
I think the last time I saw that gag was in Summer Wars.
@@jikorijo4516to be fair it doesn't make a lot of sense. I think it's the result of trying to over express blushing with blood vessels over filling. But im not too sure. Definitely a 80s - 90s anime humor aesthetic

The original first three OVAs were one of the earliest anime I got on VHS from the UK. I still remember the opening and ending fondly.

As one of the 90s series I never got around to but often saw brief clips of and like the art style of, it's sad to hear that it doesn't hold up well.
Unrelated, the late 90s were a strange time for production values. Such extremes. You have OVAs like this that look like cheap TV, and TV like Lain that you would be forgiven for forgetting weren't OVAs.
I remember watching the first episodes of this back when it first came out. My exact reaction was basically that they removed most of what made Nuku Nuku Nuku Nuku.
I didn't know that nuku nuku dash of these two girls reminded of Mihoshi and Kiyone from Tenchi Muyo
Only difference is Mihoshi and Kiyone are funny.
Well, at least they killed it off for now. Who knows, with them being desperate for anime ideas now, they could possibly bring it back.

Was All Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku overlooked? I remember it being kinda a big deal in the anime circles I wandered through when I was in High School in the mid-90s.
It's overlooked nowadays. That is kind of the mission statement of the show. Looking back on old anime that was once popular, but now not so much.

Another thing to note, there are multiple unsatisfying plot endings there. Like the flower girl don't know what happened to her and of course, who can forget Yuko, the artificial girl, experimented to be an esper, like a 90's elfen lied, who never had a human connection. What happened to her? We need closure about her.

Recently watched all of Nuku Nuku via the Discotek release. Woof. Based on your review, I was unprepared for how bad Nuku Nuku TV would end up being. Due to your lack of review at the time, I had undeservedly high hopes for Dash until about 2-3 episodes in. Yeesh.
Great work, KB. 2 questions though:
1. Who wins in a fight between Nuku Nuku and A-ko?
2. Would you please do Birdy The Mighty?

Edit: Also, now having watched the full video, I'm surprised how you didn't talk about excessive fanservice in DASH
I mean the original OVAs had fanservice, but HERE...you can tell where the budget, that should've been used for the action, went and not in a good way. Aside from the cat milk scene and the jiggle physics in Nuku Nuku's transformation, which even at 13 made me uncomfortable and I watched friggin Sora no Otoshimono, there's a sequence where Akiko first goes on her mission
A speech is going off in the background about how she could die and that fate of the city is in her hands and in the middle of that a good 5 seconds is dedicated to staring at her jiggling boobs...like why ??😃??
Again the original anime had fanservice too, and heck some of my favorite characters of all time come from ecchi or poorly made ecchi adaptions of eroge, but in DASH? Its just awkward and really uncomfortable 😅
Edit 2: Also the skin bleaching of Nuku Nuku and Arisa...like all the melanin from both of them are gone for no reason, something even Nuku Nuku TV got right most of the time
Heck the only one with a dark complexion is basement dwelling Natsume, the least likely person to have one 💀

tbh I watched Nuku Nuku Dash first. It was on the anime channel in my country ... and then they showed Nuku Nuku TV . I got obsessed with Dash and started to search about Nuku Nuku and found the OVA, which was so different from Dash that it made me very surprised ! I agree that the OVA is the best. The TV is kinda too much and trying too hard. But DASH is a whole different thing. I like it and don't compare it to the original, as it's own anime without connections to the original.
But the songs to all animes are serious bamgers!!! I love Megumi Hayashibara and she's my favorite singer and voice actor. I was seriously obsessed with her and still am😂
So they grab a hilarious, sexy fun comedy, strip of everithing that make it unique and call it the same name wow

I've seen this anime before. I'm not even the biggest fan of it, but I don't think it deserved this much of a harsh critique. It's just a mediocre anime from back in the day. Keep up the videos. I'm still a big fan of the channel.
ok, two things. 1st, I don't like that the final villain is someone who didn't even have a name, despite being literally nuku nuku's cat twin sister. She doesn't have a personality. And all in all, this is the main problem of last minute villains. 2nd thing: Ryonusuke's mother should've died in that initial explosion created by nuku nuku twin(IT IS FRUSTRATING Because she DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A NAME!!). I mean the guy who activated her also DOESN'T HAVE A NAME!!! WTH!!

I saw Dash and I don't remember any of this. But I did see Mahoromatic and all this attempted set up reminds me of it... so did I see Dash? I have the whole set and I definitely remember the OVA and TV show, the highs and lows as it were... I still have the set but I'll just take your word for it that I saw Dash. It's safer that way.
This video does make me want to watch Mahoromatic again, the SHAFT/Gainax co-production that proves... something or another.

C'mon, Retrocrush, why did you preserve this big turd from the kitty litter pan instead of just scraping it into the trash? This anime clearly was a cash-grab and Nuku Nuku in name only, so much paper, ink, paint and celluloid could and should have been saved for better things. I'll never get any anime that tries to do that whole horrible "if you continuously stalk and harass a woman you're attracted to she might magically like you!" trope, also doesn't help the uncomfortable age gap between the two, said relationship would be problematic and illegal in real life.
I would have said that the budget looked slightly higher than Nuku Nuku TV...until the fight scenes, from this show that came out in *1998* were shown, especially that mecha fight...the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime had better mecha fight animation and it was nearly two decades older, to where by the end they were using fewer and fewer cels...and 15:56, they couldn't even do the "Team Rocket flying" thing right.
Sounds to me like Kyouko and Arisa's name swapping was a case of ignorance/forgetfulness, and based on their dynamics, eeyup, a crappy Tenchi rip-off...and that whole clone stuff thingy...the writers weren't even trying...there is only one All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku anime (would love to read the manga though), none of the others are canon.

Im honestly not watching this crappy "shit on it" review thats all hatred, *because both nuku nuku anime are awesome and only 12 sweet episodes long* id say the original is a bit better, but its SO worth watching both anime. Both belong in a anime fans collection.

I want Nuku Nuku Dash to come back, keep it's dark setting and romance, but redone so ryoske is not a dick
