Urusei Yatsura: Only You | KYOTO VIDEO

- It was inevitable that a video on Urusei Yatsura would be uploaded to this channel one of these days. Of course, we gotta start things off with Urusei Yatsura's first movie Urusei Yatsura and see if it can pull a Lupin and be an ideal starting point for the series.

Ataru does get better and become better in future episodes and chapters and come to realises that he may not like to admit it he truly does love/ cares for Lum and wouldn’t want to be without her
Ooh talk about the sequel beautiful dreamer
I grew up reading Archie comics as a kid, and when I discovered Urusei Yatsura I slowly began to notice similarities and thought it couldn't have been a coincidence. I was right all along I see 😌
Yup the earlier episodes - Before Takahashi started to make multi-chapter stories - (The thing she now most excels at), definitely had that self-contained story, "Small 'C' comedy", with little continuity and a surprise ending, could easily have been called "Archie in space"! Like you, this is something I noticed after reading the VIZ reprint of the first book... I had no idea that anyone else had ever noticed! 🙃🤣
"...six, if you hate yourself." Oho, my interest is piqued!
6 is not thaaat terrible. It just feels really off brand compared to the rest of the franchise... Especially the humor. There are some nicely animated action sequences though.
6th movie were made for the money, but it's not that bad. I think Lum the forever is "worse" bc it's too confuse
@@joaomantovani9527I agree, the 6th is not bad. I haven't seen the 4th one yet
Ataru may be a shithead, but he's _our_ shithead.
You can tell from the type of movie Oshii wanted to do for Urusei Yatsura when you go from "Only You" to "Beautiful Dreamer" the next film he did after this.
Am I insane, or did KaiserBeamz never cover Beautiful Dreamer? I feel like I'm suffering from some episode of the Mandela Effect or something.
Yeah, I though he would have a review of it by now.
Why does this only have 211 likes
This guy has such talent in editing and appreciation for the media
Wtf
Fr, this vid is 3 years old and I’m just now getting it recommended
That always seems like an interesting problem for shows adapting to movies and these movies not trying to feel simply like a bigger and higher budget episode from the show.
I remember there was a Matthew Sweet music video that featured Lum herself.
It was a beginning of anime *slowly* being accepted into the Western mainstream back in the 90s, despite being around in the West for decades since Speed Racer.
OH MY GOD! I had totally forgotten all about that! Thank you for reminding me of it. I just now watched it again for the first time in 35(?) years and loved it as though I was seeing it for the first time.

THIS MOVIE WAS MY INTRODUCTION TO URUSEI YATSURA AND IT IS MY FAVORITE MOVIE. WILL YOU MAKE A VIDEO OF THE SECOND MOVIE OF URUSEI YATSUYA?
UA-cam has blessed me by recommending this video! I've been waiting for someone to make a real in-depth video on this series for the longest time and this didn't disappoint! A video on Beautiful Dreamer would be sick too!
As a fan of Urusei Yatsura and the original Archie comics, how did I never notice the resemblance???
People always assume japan is super original for some reason. It's probably that distinct art style.
@@Frogman1212 that's definitely it
It's much more noticeable in the manga, than when watching the anime.
here after watching 2022 remake
Maybe the best anime/manga series? I'm a fan of old anime, especially the cyberpunk genre from the 80s, but I think "Urusei Yatsura" is the most absurd and entertaining thing I've seen.... and Beutiful Dreamer is just a work of art!
Oh my god, I paused the video immediately to comment first, but FINALLY I get to watch someone talk about Urusei Yatsura!!!! Oh my god!!!!!! I have a huge tattoo of Lum that I got on my 18th birthday. I have a huge personal attachment to this series.
Fun fact Urusei Yatsura was the first manga I ever bought and the first thing I ever bought on Amazon, back when they were only out to destroy bookstores.
3 of the films have been remastered and released on Bluray in North America thanks to Discotek Media. Hopefully more will be released.
I love those annoying aliens. The movies are interesting but seem to go all over the place. The one thing the movies did do well was continue the series excellent musical score. The complete cd collection is crown of my musical collection. Even my lupin collection is a noticeable second.
.....so you have the 15-disc CD boxed set? I have that, along with the 8-disc Maison Ikkoku Boxed Set. The perfect pair! James Staley
@@jamesstaley3664 yeah it’s the full series bgm, incidentals, and a disc for each movie. I got it at a suncost in a strip mall in the 2000’s. Wild times.
This was great! Please do Beautiful Dreamer!
I've read some of Rumiko Takahashi's shorter manga and its well made, the art style is really nice. But gone are the days when I'd watch five episodes of Bleach in one sitting, today I don't always succeed cramming in my daily one episode of anime, so long shows are a problem. Urusei Yatsura seems real nice but I wouldn't be done with it within a year. Great video as always!
Don't forget that this show aired weekly from 1981-1986 originally. So the first people to watch this watched it for 5 years.
So 1 year isn't that long by comparison.
I know this movie, wither in English or in Japanese this movie is god tier and a comedic masterpiece
Yo I just wanna say you’ve introduced me to a ton of great anime. I never liked the anime of today but these old shows rock.
Agreed, I was a rabid Otaku in the 90s, when ALL genres of Manga/Anime could be found outside of Asia, but now, it seems that the backlash from the censorship and re-writing of shows like Cardcaptor Sakura scared off TV execs in North America, leaving us with either the kiddie shows based on cardgames or the ultra violent stuff, which more closely resembles the American "Superhero" crap, neither of which holds much interest for me! Takahashi, btw, is the inspiration for the way I draw in the manga style (As someone once said, her art is so simple, that it's complicated... which suits my own drawing style just fine!)
I watch a lot of old anime but never really touched Urusei Yatsura, might give these movies a shot.
Ryoko wasn't captured for the wedding because she wouldn't let herself be. LOL
I love Urusei Yatsura so much. It's hilarious. I just watched this movie yesterday and it's really good. They really went all out with the animation compared to normal episodes of the 80's anime at that time.
I never saw Only You but Beautiful Dreamer was one of my favorites growing up as a kid whose only access to anime in the early days was like, six titles max in the Special Interests section of Hollywood Video, lmao
I get the impression by that point that they figured out how to make the ensemble cast thing work with them instead of against them. Also frankly the plot is way more intriguing from the perspective of a newcomer in that one versus Only You--with OY it kind of requires a working knowledge of the series to find humor in the situation, but with BD it makes plenty of sense just going in completely blind. I admit I haven't seen it since I was a literal child though so maybe it didn't age as well as I'm remembering 😅 this video makes me want to revisit it though. Can always count on this channel to manifest the most specific nostalgia! Thanks again
Love Urusei Yatsura. Great vid as always Kaizer!
Your videos are amazing, thanks for making these :)
Ooooooh nice. Thank you. I definitely have been curious about the Urusei Yatsura franchise so this may be right up my alley.
You had my attention with your video on the first Lupin III movie (thanks UA-cam recommendations), and now you have my subscription with this video on the first Urusei Yatsura movie! Love both franchises, and love both videos!
Ataru, I don't care the circumstances but O would totally stay with that lovely green aired bombshell.
Ah yes the goat of 80s anime.
Great work on the video! Was looking forward to seeing some UY show up on this channel for a long time and you delivered fantastically.
I really enjoyed this, and it has helped push me over the edge on checking out the franchise. It's been one I've often passed on diving into, despite knowing its incredible influence. Part of it has been being unsure how much it would hold up, and how much is just how popular it was with US otaku in the 80s/90s.
I'm looking forward to you doing more videos on it as well!
Another great video!!
Only love for this movie. Thank you for reminding me watching it soon again.
Wow amazing video! Only you is a really good movie and as I was watching it I couldn't but have the feeling they were summarinzing everything that was Urusei Yatsura until that point, even the first minutes of the movie after everyone received the wedding invitations, it's a reference to a scene from the first episode and while a feel that it's more a larger episode of the show I would say, if that's the case, it's a good one and the other movies are not very friendly to newcomers due to yes It's a romcom but it doesn't feel the same while you progress through it, there is not a complex evolution in the characters but there is something.
I would like to see you talk about the show itself and the other movies, specially beautiful dreamer and lum the forever
I love anime and manga are so beautiful. All hand drawn and unique (at the time) stories. It’s so beautiful. Wish I can watch m read em all if I can
I love this anime! Great video!
Really good idea to start the intro after the pitch.
great video!
ALL THE FLOOF!!
Hail the FLOOF
Only You and Beautiful Dreamer are both in my top 25 favorite movies.
KaiserBeamz: (watches anime about a stalker who imposes herself on a human over a misunderstanding, won't take no for an answer, and physically punishes the object of her affections for chasing other women despite his clearly not wanting her in his life) "Lum is the purest angel in the world!"
me: "What the hell did your mother do to you?"
Neither are good so they are perfect for each other. LOL. Lum is pretty chill when Ataru isn't cheating. Also some episodes show he does want her around.
Nice stuff
Cant wait for you to get around to the Ranma movies!
Wait THERE'S RANMA MOVIES
@@SkeletonFigure that’s what I said !
Great video, and it's making me want to hear your thoughts on the second film, BEAUTIFUL DREAMER, which is still my favorite ever anime movie. While it's definitely not a great jumping on point, it served that function for me way back in the early 90s, and I've introduced many a friend to URUSEI YATSURA with it...only to have them surprised that the series is so slapstick by comparison. (No wonder the creator of the manga hated it, but you can't please everyone.) It even goes some way to unpacking another bit of the show that this first movie lacks: namely, that while Ataru really is a scumbag, he still loves Lum deep down. Anyway, hope you'll be doing a video on it - and I am really enjoying the channel! You're making the sort of videos I wish I could make!
My favorite manga/anime.
Thanks
Just had to come here after learning that Urusei Yatsura is getting a remake this year by David Productions
nice use of Giant Bomb
Didn't expect him to use a Mario Party 7 clip.
16:09 MRS BOUVIER!
Great job on this. Im a long time fan of UY. Love your videos of long forgotten 80s, 90s anime. Could you do masakazu matsura wingman please? Or his better known work video girl ai?
Love this series
ahhh you need to do a video for Beautiful Dreamer!!!
Exelente video.Saludos
Urusei Yatsura movies from best to worst: 5, 2, 3, 1, 6, 4.
5 is hard to place over 2 but I agree. movie 2 is quite the mind bender while 5 is the best story of all of them.
4's just an eye spectacle that hurt to watch
Did not know Urusei Yatsura was inspired by that, but it make some sense that it was a merger of American comics (Archer) and Japanese folklore (I am sure it's more complex than that). You could also say that other later manga did the same. I am sure Harry Potter had that same effect on given how the magic school became a big thing in a certain era of manga/anime.
Isn't Archer an animated series?
@@mariic2 Sorry missed typed Archie comic, but wasn't that in the video?
nice
Awesome video even though that Urusei Yatsura Only You was the first anime movie directed by Mamoru Oshii released in 1983 around the same time as Urusei Yatsura anime tv series was airing at the time and it became Rumiko Takahashi's favorite which is true to the series until Mamoru Oshii directed Urusei Yatsura Beautiful Dreamer later on in 1984 after he directed 105 episodes of Urusei Yatsura anime tv series until he worked on his famous works such as Angel's egg, Jin Roh the Wolf Brigade, and the cult classic Ghost in the Shell
Yokai Monsters Spook Warfare (1968) really deserves a mention as an influence for this comic and show.
OMG, the Dan & Mab's censor bar takes me back...
Best Funtime good time anime ever ❤️!!
Nice
I've seen that anime and I've seen all the movie's it's really good something to check out.
Also not gonna lie the character of lum is beautiful 😁👍
Rumiko Takahashi is the GOAT
Cromulent!? That word embiggens this smallest man. XD
16:08 TYYYY
This series is created by Rumiko Takahashi, the same woman who famously created the series Inuyasha.
" who famously created the series Inuyasha."
UGGGHHHH you have NO idea how much I hate that this overblown, self-plagiarized mess of lamely constructed, repetitive hacky ideas that just don't work, always gets referenced as the series she's "most known for", while her objectively superior series like Ranma 1/2 never gets brought up in that spot it should be.
@@the-NightStar uh take a deep breath
Can't say I'm a big fan of her work, mostly because I despise the "Male Abuse is Funny" double standard.
Great review! Although, I feel your criticism towards this movie is a little harsh. While not as great as the later movies, it still felt like a pretty huge scale movie for its time.
I hope you do a review on Beautiful Dreamer soon!
I sure hope when I finish the series there's at least a finite conclusion. From the title of the movie I assumed this was the final send off. Ah, whatever. I'm happy just to see these characters have a fun and not so fun time interacting with one another.
cool vid
Speaking of Oshii's comedy side, have you seen his new anime Vlad Love ? I personally think it's fun but really minor compared to his other works, even his comedics works.
Otherwise, great video, I hope you'll talk about the other Urusei Yatsura's movies but since we can see an clip of the 4th movie in your opening, I guess it will maybe happen.
I always wonder why Rumiko Takahashi always has scumbag male protagonists? I sort of think Ranma is the most likable, but that's only because he has a duel personality, is ultimately noble when it comes down to it, and his motivations for trying to find a cure at any cost is relatable.
Yusaku Godai of Maison Ikkoku is also not really despicable.
Ataru in the manga is the fucking best,
Well he also is in the anime but there he was nerfed.
Like in manga most of the time he comes on top of the situation, wich gives the impresion of being a master troll instead of a scumbag.
After all, a charismatic troll is just a cool scumbag.
What about Inuyasha. He's not a jerk.
Hey, you should make a video about beautiful dreamer. For me and most of the fans, it's the best movie and because it's different from the anime
The Urusei Yatsura series is similar to To Love Ru.
The Urusei Yatsura movie Only You is similar to Love Hina as that also has a misunderstanding the snowballs into something sillier.
I can only guess that this Alien Girl who plays tag with the protagonist when they were young did the same thing to other male characters later on and she had completely forgotten the others she made that same proposal to.
No Elle did not forget any of them: she has all 99,999 of them kept in her refrigerator. Mendo gets the (dubious) honor of being number 100,000!

Z I love this
Is there any possibility of Urusei Yatsura and Dr. Slump tv series being available in the west? At least the UY movies are on CR, including Mamoru Oshii's Beautiful Dreamer
Dr Slump recently got a release in the west on Tubi TV of all places. I have to check again if it's the entire series or it's part of a series with how they rereleased Saint Seiya.
Urusei Yatsura is slowly getting there. Discotek is slowly releasing all of the movies to gague interests before getting to the main series.
Infelizmente no Brasil, não foram muito divulgados tantos os filmes como os mangás.
Oh come on Movie 6 wasn't that bad. Looking back I actually liked it.
"Conveys the whole franchise"
"Takahashi vision"
Did you really read the manga?
Ataru is a normal guy who just want to live a peaciful life with his girlfriend.Sure he tries to hit in girls, but these ussualy end up hitting him.
On other hand, lum was a bitch who forced herself into Atarus life, hurts him on diary basis, and ultimately looks at him as an object ( In the movie she tried to abduct him and force him to marriage), like, really girl, he is not into you, get over it.
Even Taka made Lum to be the antagonist of the series, until her popularity exploded.
I find it almost amazing how basically almost everything you said is the actual opposite of reality.
@@the-NightStar Interesting, please explain.
Aturu likes lum , he said he loved her and beautiful dreamer and throughout the anime and manga it hints that aturu likes lum but is mean to her most the time because he’s a tsundre or something
Lum is chill when Ataru isn't "cheating".
I Did A Report On The History Of Refrigerators Back In The Day . I Am Upset I Did Not Include The Love Refrigerator !
Blue hair? BLUE HAIR?????
I did a double take at that, too. Her hair is clearly green.
back in the day when a 109-episode anime was considered long.
Almost as long as the episode count of most 80's cartoons.
Why is Lum showing so much skin?! 😱😱
can one of these videos pronounce the names right? someone called usei shatsura
Lums hair is blue? Am I colour blind or you?
Rumiko has said that she always believed that Lum's hair would be/should be blue, but when the animation began, the head artist on the series liked green so that's what it was.

I don't understand why this is considered a good love story. The main dude is a creepy little bastard, and the alien girl is so possessive and violent.
That's the joke. Part of the fun is that the characters aren't good and aren't bad. It kinda has an American Dad energy only it's not as dark.
The large cast is probably one of the biggest problems with the franchise. Best Girl Oyuki only appears 14½ episodes, which is less than 8% of the original anime's lifespan! Why even have a Yuki-onna in your series if you're not gonna do anything with her?!
Haven't seen this one, but I did just watch Beautiful Dreamer last night. (I was told it was the superior of the two Oshii-directed ones) It was... fine, but my biggest problem (and one I think I would have with Only You as well) was that Ataru is 10000x less interesting than Lum and the supporting cast. Every time he came on screen, he would just suck the fun out of the comedy by being an overly predictable oaf who seems genuinely uninterested in everything. I couldn't help but feel like "Bro, if you don't care about this plot, then stop being in it. We don't want you here either." I understand we are meant to love to hate him. I just hated him.
I've been wanting to watch the series for so long but...no DvD, even Philippian piracy from ebay is a no go =(
I see that this reply was posted one year ago. You will be happy to learn that now in 2021/22, the movies are now coming out on DVD/Blu-ray. I already have one and three.

?
I think you are being way too biased with Lum. I love her don't get me wrong but this girl is far from an angel that you described when she has done a lot of fatal errors and Ataru is way less than a scumbag you mentioned, I can't blame you since it looks like you only based it on Ataru's anime characterization that is 1000 worse. He is still a pervert, sure but not at that massive margin and he has his good moments, have you seen how his own parents' treat him? it doesn't excuse his actions but is understandable why he wants to search love in somewhere else and it helps with his teenage hormones. He is not as overbearing as his anime self, sure in it has his moments but it's way worse. I suggest you to read the manga, is way better in the character development (except one arc because they reseted to status quo but other than that arc is fine) The anime is a masterpiece in animation but in story is bad adapted in most of the parts.
Never cared that much about this series just because it looked like it was just anothe typical harem anime with a goody two shoes boring MC who has all the girls meanwhile the rest of the cast is throw aside.
I watched a few episodes in TV when i was a kid, but didnt remember anything about it.
When i decided to watch it again 3 years ago, i found myself enjoying Ataru and the side characters more than the main girls(Lum,Shinobu,Sakura etc...)hahaha
For me, Mendo and Ataru are the highligths of the series.xd
But id say that there isnt any romantic tension between lum and Ataru tho, he just hates her lol
Not without a reason
" because it looked like it was just anothe typical harem anime with a goody two shoes boring MC who has all the girls meanwhile the rest of the cast is throw aside."
This was literally the very first type of show like this, and yet it did hardly any of these things.
But then along cam trash like Love Hina that basically IS everything you just said.
