- KB finally gets to talk about one of his favorite franchises and does so with it's first American entry: Tenchi Muyo in Love. The question we must answer is this: Is there more to this film than just getting Ryoko and Ayeka in schoolgirl uniforms?

I always appreciated how, due to the nature of the plot and its cast's personalities, this basically defaulted to being a Kiyone-led story right up until the final climax on the moon. Tenchi's unable to affect anything due to being on the constant verge of temporal annihilation who Sasami has to babysit, Washu has to stay in the present to serve as an exposition machine, and the other girls are incompetent disasters in general, so Kiyone's literally the only character that can act as a driving force in the story, which is a nice bit of spotlight for someone who had otherwise largely acted as a comic foil for a side character in Tenchi Universe.
Heck yeah! I love Tenchi so much. It's my favorite anime of all time and it's so nice to see it talked about. Especially this movie. I used to rent it every month with my sister and we'd watch it over and over again. It holds such a special place in my heart. I adored your video on it and I'm glad you pointed out both its flaws and its best moments. Especially the animation. Now I need to get my sister to watch this lol.
Man you brought back some pretty accurate memories! Lol I was in my early teens (12-13) in 1996, was getting into “japanimation” thanks to a Sailor Moon obsession, and fell into Tenchi muyo in love by picking it up and buying it blindly at Best Buy. And your goddamn right I was confused as hell!

Great video. Really takes me back. One thing, though. Kain went after the Jurai family because they are the only ones who could stop his rampage. His driving motivation was revenge and removing the obstacle that would allow him to destroy/rule the galaxy. Although, beyond that I do agree his motivation for WHY he wanted to destroy the galaxy is sorely lacking.
One thing I found interesting about the Tenchi franchise, at least as far as the OVA, the movies, and Universe, and Tokyo, is that only Ryoko and Ayeka seemed genuinely romantically interested in Tenchi. Sasami had some kid dream of growing up and marrying him. And Washu had a single scene of acting that way. But otherwise it was just the two girls with Kyone having no interest in Tenchi whatsoever beyond friendship and Mihoshi two dumb to know where she was or why she did the things she did. Kyone was my favorite, BTW, because out of all of them, she acted the most normal and not head-over-heels in love of Tenchi.
No in the OVAs they all wanted him And in the 5rh OVA series he basically admits he is marrying all of them. At least Sasami os of age by that point.
Wow, I was 11 when I saw this on the Sci-Fi Channel. Even though it was my first exposure to Tenchi I didn't have too much trouble following it. Then again I was a smart kid. 😉
I remember, after showing her the entire Ryoh-Ohki OVA's first (over a course of a number of weeks), sitting up one evening with my late mom watching this film. She liked it; it wasn't on a par, in her mind, with the Studio Ghibli fare that we both loved, but she said it was a good story.
Great review! Loved this film as a kid and an adult. Used to rent it all the time at my local Hollywood video and blockbuster on VHS and now I have it on the limited edition blu ray that funimation released a few years back that is now out of print. Thanks for this!!
This was one of my first anime as middle school kid getting into anime in 2012 or 2011 not sure lol but this anime has a special place in my heart

I actually recorded this one when it premiered on the Sci Fi (old spelling) channel. Yeah, I was lost at first but found the characters endearing and got sucked into it. The sound design is great too. It definitely has a 'made for the theater' quality to it.

One thing I'd like to add to your point about watching anime in the mid and early 90s though. A majority of the time you would just stumble across an anime movie (or any movie really) while channel surfing. So it wasn't uncommon to stumble upon a movie half way, or even two thirds the way done, having no idea what it's even called most of the time. That being the case, if you found something and it just seemed cool, you'd go with it and try and piece it together as you went.
I had seen pretty much everything on Tenchi before I came across this. I thought, therefore, I was prepared. I was still not only lost but totally bored in little time. I tried to stick it out. I kept hoping it would return to the memory I had. It never did.
Correction thr OVA were already coming out from Pioneer before the TMiL did. I know this because I saw the first ova in 1995 at the latest. The movie might have been released before Tenchi TV in thr US... but not the ova.
I concur. I bought the movie on VHS on day 1 after having watched the original OAVs (If I remember right, the Tenchi Universe series was just starting to be released in America, but I’m not as certain of that). A little late to the discussion, I admit.
This film definitely took an interesting approach on explains the dead mother in the series 👍

aaand this is one of the many reasons why I have and will always love the Tenchi Universe timeline, and prefer it over the Tenchi Muyo OVA series.
I think it was my first exposure but I loved it and didn't feel lost although I'm sure there was plenty I didn't understand.

Funny, I actually had that big box set of the original OVAs. It was one of the first anime series I bought on DVD. Didn't know anything about it, but I figured anything with a box that lavish had to be worthwhile, especially after years of watching anime on cheap tapes. And I basically wasn't wrong. I never really cared for any of the movies, tho. (At least this one has cool music.)
I went into the movie blind. The movie lets you infer a lot without detriment to the story. Buckaroo Banzai took the same approach.
Dude, I got into Tenchi in 95-96. It was the OVAs then Universe( Thank you BlockBuster/ Starlight Video for that). Now I admit I did catch it in 96 on Sci-fi channel, but it was thanks to rental stores. Luckily I was able to buy them and expose the series to friends...before Toonami wrecked their perception through its censorship...

Awesome video. Tenchi in Love was my first introduction to the franchise and what got me interested in it. While not familiar with the franchise, not knowing what was going on/who the characters were didn’t bother me. I just accepted it as part of the mystery of the movie. But for me, I think one downside of seeing ToL first was that it set up the wrong expectations for the series. I thought the whole show was gonna be scifi action with some comedy and romance as a secondary aspect, when in reality, Tenchi was a scifi harem romcom first and an action series a distant third. I still loved it…until things started to get crazy in Ryo-Ohki and Tenchi in Tokyo (to say nothing of the whole confusing split retelling thing and the reveal about Tenchi’s mom in the OVAs! Movie Achika will forever be best Tenchi’s Mom!) But this franchise is still nostalgic for me and I go back and watch this movie regularly.
This channel is criminally underrated. It deserves A LOT more attention.
Hmm, fortunately for me, not knowing the backstories when I first saw this didn't turn me off to it. I went in assuming I wouldn't know who the characters were, so anything I didn't understand I immediately backed up with "that's something I'd know if I watched the show first, so I won't dwell on it" and just let myself focus on the things I could follow... and so it didn't bother me.
Maybe having seen many other anime at that point made me less sensitive to such things

Tenchi the movie was the point where I entered into the realms of the Fallan Otaku. Because unlike most others when this movie came, and everyone was first introduced to Tenchi and the haram Genre. I had already been knee deep into the manga and OVA of both Tenchi and Oh My goddess. For me the polish had started to wear off and I started viewing Anime with a sense of cynicism. I started to view the genre as the spawn of the Loney and desperate and started to second guess my interest in Anime.
One of the genres I swore off was haram anime as each and every one I stumbled across took every story beat from Tenchi or Oh My Goddess.
A title I believe that was done far better but ended up completely ignored.
I have sense viewed anime as one would view a side show attraction. Amusing while passing by, but ultimately losing the appeal the longer you stick around.
It all comes down to this one title in this one genre.
You are right about the end, but I went in watching it knowing the impact beforehand. It didn't have the same effect foe me.
Because I came in with the knowledge that Tenchi is the golden boy savior of the universe, and now his mother sacrificed herself for him making him that much more important. I was left, not at all suppressed and yet vary disappointed.
Tenchi is the one show I'll always longingly admire but have come to despise as it ruined Anime for me.
I started to realize, just how lazy, repetitive, and creatively inept anime truly was.
I still watch anime, but I have no great love for it anymore. That love died with this movie.
I stand a Fallen Otaku.
Normally when a show pulls a Time-travel gimmick, it always tries to stick with it's centered time-line and say: _"And thus, this is why this is that"_ implying that no matter what changed the group did it was a default prelude to the entire series, but no this Tenchi movie actually did changed the main character's past, even if it was just a little bit.
I say this because I don't know if it was ever truly addressed or not, but in the TV series Tenchi Universe it was implied that Tenchi's mother died during his childhood, but here after the movie, it implies she died not too long after his birth. Infact almost an entire episode was highlighted about Tenchi's mother, mostly featuring his Father and Grandfather talking about they've changed perspectives on a season of weather they they slowly grew to like again, after disliking it for so long. I'm guessing that indicated that Tenchi's mother died on a cold winter day.
Whether or not that was changed, I don't know, but it makes you think when you look back on that episode.
I first discovered Tenchi Muyo back in the mid-90s during the VHS era and it quickly became one of my favorite titles. But I saw the OVA and I think Tenchi Universe before seeing TMIL which helped figure this movie out for me. I agree, if I had seen this first, I would have had no idea who the characters were and why they were important. The Tenchi Muyo OVA DVD was one of the first anime DVDs available for sale which began the end of anime companies having to do two different SKUs for dubbed and subbed films (and usually only doing subbed tapes for the most popular titles). TMIL was also one of the earliest DVDs to be released since those of us who have it (myself included) that didn't have anamorphic widescreen presentation (a problem with early DVD titles in the age where most TVs were still 4:3 CRT sets. While I still love Tenchi after 25 years and they are just recently finished episode 6 of season 5 (!!), it's a very dense show to get into now since there are so many characters to learn. The original OVA season 1 and Tenchi Universe are good places to start and ok to follow along for non-fans. But God forbid if you began with any of the later Tenchi OVA seasons, or GXP, Geminar or other series. And unlike you, I did think GXP was an interesting show. The singularly terrible show is Tenchi in Tokyo. Poor animation, poor stories, poor execution. Thankfully it is NOT Canon to either OVA or Universe.
“Tenchi muyo in love” essentially takes place in the “tenchi universe” timeline. All their powers and relationships are all in line with tenchi universe. The 2nd movie takes places in the ryo oki OAV series timeline(sorta). And the final movie goes back to tenchi universe.
I've two videos of people snarking on this films and singling out the Tokyo Tower thing, but neither made a Kaiju joke out of it.
Tenchi Muyo in love is the continued story of tenchi muyo tv, otherwise known as tenchi univers. I dont get your gripe with having to have prior knowledge to tenchi when this movie and tenchi muyo in love 2 are basically sequels to the tv series.
How do you feel about the Slayers and One Piece manga?
I did first discover Tenchi Muyo on Toonami like many others, and I have to say it may be my favorite of the animes they were showing at the time. It has so much action and world building, but it also has a ton of character and quiet moments that really draw you in unlike some of the more famous animes they showed (looking at you Dragonball Z). Too many people dismiss it is a “harem” and ignore it, but I compare it to Star Wars in its ability to balance action, comedy, romance, and drama, and I do not say that lightly.
Hmmm...Tenchi Muyo was inspired by unused ideas for it...Gall Force shared the same character designer and was the OVA series released prior to it...Genocyber’s manga was written as a sort of darker take on it...Burn Up! was made to fill it’s release slot...I’m looking forward to the Bubblegum Crisis episode. Cuz I know it’s gotta happen sooner or later since that series, for all the short comings its production had, was a pretty massively popular and influential series back in the day both in Japan and in the West.
I don't get why people like this trash anime.... If you like that's ok... But for me this is just a boring anime.
