People criticize IONIQ 5N by its sound and clutch are all fake. However, it is an option that only Hyundai can provide that other companies do not. The EU will ban the sale of internal combustion engines within a few decades, and not only in the EU, but in many countries as well. In this situation, Hyundai's attempt to transplant the advantages of the internal combustion engine into an electric vehicle deserves praise. Also, they work very well and make the driving experience smoother and enhance the fun. These options can be turned off at any time, and the '650hp' & '0-100 in 3.4 sec' BEAST can be transformed into the normal IONIQ 5, one of the best family EVs, anytime. It has all the same conveniences such as enormous interior space and V2L. The best part of the IONIQ 5N is not numbers like '0-100 3.4sec' or '650hp' (although it is already powerful enough). Ilt has the best driving feel and cornering and tremendous chassis performance of any EV under $100K currently. IONIQ 5N recorded a lap time of 7min 45sec at the Nürburgring. It is similar to Porsche Taycan and Model S Plaid. EV's output drastically decreases after driving at maximum speed a few times due to the heat of the battery. However, the IONIQ 5N remains fine even if driven at full power all day. Hyundai may not the best in EV technology, but it has the world's best technology in battery heat management. Tesla's '1000hp' is only a peak number. I think sustainability of power is more important. If this car was made by a German brand like BMW it would start at at least $150K. But IONIQ 5N starts at $65K. This is by far the best value options for anyone considering a sporty EV.
I test drove this car a few days ago and it is a lot of fun indeed! The fake shifting and engine noise serve a good purpose in connecting you to the car more, and even my family, who test drove it with me, liked the engine noise the best of all the sounds. It sounds silly, but it helps to make the transition fun and engaging. The car is a bit high and heavy for a sports car (I usually drive an Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce), but the engineers have done a remarkable job with this car. And for that alone it is worth considering.

The N eshift feature is so amazing... getting all the feel of a transmission car with no transmission is insane.. kudos to Hyundai for integrating a innovative feature
Innovation? Electric motors were invented eons ago. I bet the range would be poor on this one even at non silly everyday speeds and they still dont have a charging network
@@trancenut81 since Hyundai said they'll use Tesla's charger in the near future, I think problems gonna be solved soon. and it's hard to keep the motor's temperature down while driving on the track. and its first attempt at simulating the gear-shifting effect. while other EVs are pretty much the same.
To top this all ladies and gentlemen, it’s not expensive to charge it. Sub £20 from empty on home chargers for all that fun. Granted I bet it’ll only do an hour on track! But realistically over 200 miles of travel range. Expensive to buy but for the equivalent 600bhp machine the fueling cost is crazy good value. I’d be hard set to choose this over an A45 AMG for the same money for instance (mainly on noise). But when you weigh in all the extras, the convenience factor and how cheap it is to run one… it’s genuinely a clear contender if you love a lot of toys to play with, and have charging facilities at home. Very well done Hyundai
A Korean youtuber tested the range of Ioniq 5N and got around 270 miles when driven conservatively in Eco mode. Much better than the range of 200 mile Hyundai announced. Not bad.
As a die hard ICE fan boy, I don't like that EVs are the future BUT, if it is, and it's unavoidable, this Hyundai N stuff is the direction I'd like to see. This is so cool, and so much kudos to Hyundai for trying to pump in emotion to EVs. They are really on to something here! Amazing.
My thoughts exactly! I appreciate the work & design Hyundai have been doing the last 10 or so years. They’ve really changed their image from what it was around 2000-2010.
you should drive "Non-Tesla" EV, it will change your mind and they drive amazing especially daily driving. I basically "fuel" it at home for free (if u have solar).
Once you’ve done a few launches they are simply dull. Great daily’s, but lack of noise and extra weight take away so much of the sensory fun you’d otherwise have. Hoping tech can gradually decrease weight, but I just can’t see how you mitigate the lack of noise, it’s just such a huge factor if you sit in a supercar.
Not going to lie, the E-shift is really cool. Most of my gripes with EVs isn't really the lack of sound, it's more the lack of engagement. Even if this feature is essentially useless performance wise and actually like worse for times and performance driving in general, the engagement and fun of it is worth it. Cars like this are supposed to be fun, so I'm glad Hyundai realized this and injected some video game type fun into the thing.
@@oscarcervantes3626 I could totally see that, especially coming from an ICE car. Having your torque and power application vary with your chosen gear is a huge part of controlling a vehicle, and having something that emulates an ICE car's torque changes with simulated gears would be beneficial around a track for just knowing how to finesse the car how you want it. I drive a DSG Mk7 GTI and manually selecting the right gear before entering a corner or rolling into the power band in a higher gear on corner exit so that you can smooth into your power and torque band without actually really modulating the throttle pedal at all, is a huge part of really fine tuning your driving with a car. Without something like this e-shift in an EV, that simply doesn't exist. So to have this is really cool, and the more I think about it, the more it doesn't surprise me that it's faster for a lot of drivers.
@@oscarcervantes3626 That's right! A lot of the test driver, while wanting to post fast times, always had the e shift on cause they were more engaged and involved with the car's performance. Realistically, you're wasting valuable time on shifts, but drivers being involved in the car's antics makes them more confident and comfy in the car
@livinagoodlife the pigs are going extinct, and you can't forget the taste of sausage. Having a vegan sausage is better than having nothing but veggies.
go look at the comments on the car&driver article about the ioniq 5 N's e-shift feature when it was announced - it was truly shocking to me how much negativity there was from supposed car enthusiasts about that feature. So incredibly happy to see it coming to fruition as innovative and preserving engagement in the EV age. Thank you Top Gear for bringing this excellent insight on the actual product in use, I'm excited to give it a shot myself one day!
That's mainly because there is no joy no matter what kind of gimmicks they put into an EV. An EV is not a car. It's just a toaster on wheels to us car enthusiasts. Everything that makes a car enjoyable to us. It has NONE Of it. If everyone else wants an EV. Go for it. But hyundai messed up and missed the mark for what car enthusiasts want. Because this... will NEVER be it. EV's are extremely toxic to the environment anyway. When they wreck. Toxic fumes and lithium battery fluid everywhere. It takes between 5,000 to 7,000 Watts to power a small home. It takes 7,200 watts to recharge an EV. Hmm... it's almost like an extreme amount of power from the power grid will be needed, fueled by all the fossil fuels to power these supposed "Clean solutions." driving on the road. People are buying into bullshit. And happily doing it. Thinking they're accomplishing something.
@@jeremyhenry3126 yeah, it took me a while to realize the extreme negativity was coming from people who are scared of it. Because if we have EVs that have the fun factor, then there's much less argument for keeping ICE around at all, right? That's the thinking? Look, I'm personally one of the most staunch "ICE supremacists" (lol) out there, but there's not much any of us can do about EVs coming. It's happening, and my hope is that there will be legal exceptions made for vintage cars, etc so we can keep enjoying them in a reasonable fashion. But the days of driving a manual V8 to work are almost over, like it or not, and it's cool that Hyundai is one of the only brands out there that are attempting to add back some engagement that EV appliances absolutely are devoid of. By spewing negativity at it, the only thing you're doing is showing manufacturers that you want a boring EV appliance that doesn't try to do anything interesting whatsoever. And without your interest, they will not make it. Average Joe doesn't give a damn about engine noise or shifting. Hating will get you absolutely nowhere.
I'm actually shocked at how positive the comments on here are for this. As an enthusiast I'm wondering who this is marketed to. All these features are just simulations and I'm not really interested. I like that hyundai is trying to innovate in this space but I feel like it's not really going to excite who their target audience is.
@@travismiller8232 thank you for your reasonable perspective. Look, I totally get that. I absolutely love every mechanical ounce of my E46 M3, and I don't think any EV will ever be able to replicate the feeling that it gives me. But in this very comment thread, you can see 3 different viewpoints. In mine: there's nothing we can do about EVs taking over, EVs will never provide the same feeling, but maybe if we try to innovate, try new things, it can bring *something* more enjoyable and engaging than pushing a button to go fast. Hyundai is taking that first step, and I appreciate it. And I would certainly consider buying it. Your perspective seems similar but you don't think this attempt will work for you, and that's fine. It might not work for me either, but I do think it's getting there maybe. @jeremyhenry3126 has the one that I could not understand for the longest time, but I've figured it out: denial. The belief that by throwing as much hate as possible towards this, maybe it will stop happening. Fight it, and die on that hill. I guess that explains the entire republican party, so that's certainly a type of approach to take. Best of luck with that, I guess

Turns out Hyundai not only knocks it out of the park on styling but also is capable of giving their cars character and interaction. In an increasingly anodyne world, they should be congratulated. Good job, great car.
Im not a fan of this design, the Ioniq 6 also looks like a molten porsche, a banana from the side, if they literally had ironed out that kink it wouldve looked immense, the new Kona does look better but the old one was quite bad, so its not a good design either. The I30 Fastback is their strongest design tho the non N version could have used a mirrored exhaust, one sided huge exhausts just look bad, which also applies to the tucson which has too many dorito inspired shapes in it. Genesis on the other hand makes quite nice looking cars, the G70 looks pretty lit. and Hyundais Sister company KIA makes some pretty nice looking cars, the Kia EV6 looks pretty nice with maybe the C pillar needing some work and the rear lights being a bit droopy. The best looking car from them still is the KIA Stinger which beats any Hyundai. Anyways, its nice to see the koreans get the attention they deserve. Ill definitely trade in my chinese MG4 for a hyundai or KIA any day of the week
Ok. The Ioniq 5 N is really cool. I'm not a fan of electric cars - like many petrolheads - but the Ioniq 5 is a car I would consider if I someday HAVE to go electric. The Ioniq 5 N's e-Shift is a gimmick that really wasn't necessary, but it's absolutely awesome! It makes the car fun when you want it to be and quiet and electric everywhere else. I also like the torque distribution slider. And the styling is gloriously modern Hyundai. I think that if electric car makers want to interest the petrolheads of the world, they will need these types of fun gimmicks. I mean, imagine you can drive something like this and make it sound like a straight-6, V8 or even a V12? I know Toyota is working on something similar with the LFA replacement, but this is a good idea. Get rid of the Dodge Daytona's whooshing noise and make it a fake HEMI - deep and guttural.

To emulate gear shift without energy loss (which would be waste heat that hurts breaking performance), your car should be able to handle incredible surges of regenerations. This is the key technology of EVs, which other manufacturers do not have yet. Other than Tesla and Hyundai, EVs out there can't even properly handle normal regeneration on brake, still heavily relies on physical brakes.
Gotta give a huge respect to the team for developing a new product without much reference to learning from. From a business perspective this doesn’t make a lot of sense. That’s brave and a indication the company is going serious with the N brand
it seems that all people here do not understand about what's important here in ioniq5 N. Battery manangement that capable to keep all that monsterous horsepower until battery go off on track is key point. And another key point is that Ioniq 5N is capable of generating 0.6g breaking system through powerful regen breaking. This is very crucials in EV. Becuae EV is heavy and rellying on disc break on breaking on track will make break melt away and force you to give up during section. I think e-shift is a fantastic idea and one very well executed. The bouncing of the car when it was bouncing off the 'limiter' is so we'll simulated. I think this comes to one word, which Jack mentioned, connection. The sense that your having a physical input on how the car behaves, even it is simulated, just provides another level of connection. Steering and the pressing of peddles is just to easy for most, real drivers want to be busy, this provides something to do. Great idea.

There seemed to be a gear icon next to the engine sound line. Does that allow tuning the audio more?

Not going to lie, the E-shift is really cool. Most of my gripes with EVs isn't really the lack of sound, it's more the lack of engagement. Even if this feature is essentially useless performance wise and actually like worse for times and performance driving in general, the engagement and fun of it is worth it. Cars like this are supposed to be fun, so I'm glad Hyundai realized this and injected some video game type fun into the thing.
I think they said, during testing at the track, some drivers were faster using this feature than when not using it.
This
@@oscarcervantes3626 I could totally see that, especially coming from an ICE car.
A lot of the test driver, while wanting to post fast times, always had the e shift on cause they were more engaged and involved with the car's performance. go look at the comments on the car&driver article about the ioniq 5 N's e-shift feature when it was announced - it was truly shocking to me how much negativity there was from supposed car enthusiasts about that feature.

And another key point is that Ioniq 5N is capable of generating 0.6g breaking system through powerful regen breaking. This is very crucials in EV. Becuae EV is heavy and rellying on disc break on breaking on track will make break melt away and force you to give up during section. This kind of powerful regen breakings were possible due to battery technology (NCM 9/0.5/0.5).
So over all, Now, ioniq5N is more capable in track duration than ICE cars!!!
Gibberish. It's easier to cool brakes than a battery. Regen on track leads to battery overheating.
@@Hundredthldiot You still not understanding this revolutionalry. Other EV maker's product would overheat their battery with strong regen breaking. But not Hyudai. This is why you need NCM 9/0.5/0.5 batteries.
What's revolutionary in Ioniq 5N is that batteries does not over heat no matter how you push the car. That is the point of this car.
@@Hundredthldiot And more interestingly, during Goodwood festivals, team engineers from Ioniq 5N had interview and they disclosed the fact that battery temperature went DOWN during regen breaking. They don't know how this happen. This is accidental discovery.
@@yumyumlol-o7r are you claiming that this car can be driven lap after lap on track without battery overheating issues or power restrictions? If so I'd like to see some evidence.
@@Hundredthldiot Yes. this car can be driven in track without overheating issues and power restrictions. It has been shown from many Korean car youtubers driving ioniq 5N on track. You will see evidence as western youtubers start to over view it on track.

If someone told me that 20 years ago I would have laughed!

It's kinda funny how people still look down on Hyundai as if it is 1980s now.

Have you ever actually driven one?
Test drove this last weekend @ Sydney Motorsport Park.
Sound is fake, but the 8 speed simulated gearbox feels very real.👍🏻
Because of how real it feels, I absolutely agree that the sound is “good enough” and you forget it’s all fake and absolutely need e-shift on a track when tackling corners and hairpins.
Brilliant job Hyundai and can’t wait to receive mine.👍🏻👏🏻
Dont be surprised if there are soon "Other" ignition sound options, on that replicate different gas engines becuz Why Not? the sound aspect has to be the easiest part of all that tech trickery to implement...
I have never seen one in person or had a drive behind the wheel of one but, I love this car.

The team that engineered this car deserves an award. It appears that they have thought of everything an adult would want, along with everything a kid would want too!

I enjoyed your review. I have an Ioniq5 four wheel drive car and it is very quick but I can't imagine how fast the N version must feel. I do have to say that the idea of manufacturing sound is just stupid. I really love the electric hum the car produces normally and that's all I need. It's the soul of the car. If you need noise stick with an ICE car. Don't need or want a gear shift. Love the linear feel when the car accelerates. All I want to do is go fast and I don't want to work for it.
This is one of the most interesting cars to come out in years and I guarantee it will be a future classic!
Kia EV6 GT and this car are really good jobs that we would not think they can do before ten years ago.

Special, odd, amazing! good job Hyundai! Good review TG
Great idea.

BEST New Electric Car in the World, on the market RIGHT NOW.........As far as the closest to getting an actual sports Car that is Pure Electric. No other car right now simulates torque loss through shifting gears of an ICE vehicle like this one is doing. HANDS DOWN, an INCREDIBLE Vehicle.
Also, I Already liked the design of the Ionic 5, now they made me Love It.
At least they tried to give it a noise ... it's not enough noise though.
I LIKE what they have done with this though. No gears and no noise is my BIGGEST issue with EVs... I like this. It shows progress to make a fun EV

It reminds me of my pc sim racing setup in the best possible way. Taking electrical components and using them to mimic a real racecar. But in this case you're actually belting around a racetrack! Such an amazing idea and execution. I think they should take it further, imagine being able to select different engines, gearboxes, torque distributions, power levels. Bump up the sound and really lean into the car being an NA V8/V10 or I4 Turbo. Just plain fun.
People here do not uderstand the fact that Ioniq5N is revolutionary in EV sports car. Ioniq 5N have set the definition how EV should be like on tract. EV must have atleast 0.6g of regenerative breaking system and how battery management should keep working in order to sustain certain battery temperatures. Now, other car makers have no choice but to copy write down what Hyundai have wrote the definition (If they are capable to develop technologies that Hyundai have implemented lol). Ioniq 5N makes Porsche Taycan and Audi E tron gt expensive trash. Since Ioniq 5N price is about 70k, Taycan and E tron Gt price must be at least go down to 50k or 60k.

I’d even like to see a bunch of different tonal sounds. I was surprised they stopped at just the 3, since it seems like a relatively simple thing to do. I wonder if purchasing, or downloading ‘engine’ tones will end up becoming a thing, like ringtones..🤔

Hyundai is so confident, and as a former I30N owner I can say with reason, in their product that they let you use it the way they designed and promoted it. With the N models your warranty doesn't even expire if you take it out on track, not even frigging Ferrari or McLaren does that.
