  • Thinking out loud. Have UA-cam Beer reviews had their day?
    A lot has happened over the past 5 years on UA-cam.
    Beer reviewers have come and gone. Views have come and gone!!! Which begs the question. Is there still a thirst for the content?
    Cost of living and cost of beer in general have played a huge part in the decline in overall channels and content.
    Supermarkets have saturated the shelves with mediocre and over priced content.
    Little or no innovation on the shelves and styles. Most beers in the craft arena are Hazy IPA this and New England IPA that. Has this played it part?
    So strap yourselves in for Scott’s Big Mouth episode whatever 🤣🤣

    I think they have, yet I continue to do them (nowhere near as much as I used to.) As someone that also works in the beer industry (I've worked in my mate's beer/shop bar for 7 years part time) I have seen interest drop off. Craft beer is a luxury product and as things are these days people have less cash to spend on fancy beer. I go through peaks and valleys with interest and gumption to try and reach a broader audience. As much as I like good beer actual life experiences like visiting taprooms/festivals are more fun when you don't feel the need to record anything. I really enjoyed helping Simon put together the big thing we did in Manchester and they might happen again. I let you off that you didn't mention me... 🙂

      Thank you for the long and considered message Rob.
      I have the utmost respect to the guys have that have been doing this as long as yourself and Simon etc.
      I agree with each point here. Money has played a huge part. You are spot on, craft beer is a luxury and a luxury a lot of people can no longer afford. And the huge peak of covid times where people were sat at home buying shit loads of beer and watching some numb skull chat about it on UA-cam are long gone. Sadly.
      I still enjoy watching beer content, yours included, I just don’t comment much anymore. 🤣
      The content you and Simon put together is Manchester was terrific what I saw of it. Even the absolute bell end in the background that thought it was all about him.

      @@ScottReviewsThings I watch/listen loads of people on and off but seldom comment. I have them on while I'm doing boring jobs around the house, having a shave, having a shit. I actually bought a bunch of beers on my lunchbreak to review. I'm in a bit of a run of enthusiasm to create a bit of content at the moment. I know I won't get the views that I used to, but right now that not that important to me. As long as I enjoy doing it and hopefully someone will enjoy watching it. Cheers!

    BeerTube died when Chris Steltz quit Beer Geek Nation out of the blue. Most beer geeks get their next must have beer/style/brewery from Instagram, Untappd and the bowels of Beer Advocate. I hate to say it, but I think the low quality of beertubers' content probably has turned a lot of viewers away. Few creators approach this as anything other than a personal vlog: no editing, no thumbnail design and frankly, little to no knowledge of objective quality . That's why I made that "beertuber academy" series of how-to tutorials a few months ago.
    Though I noticed you pretty much only mentioned UK based beertubers. There are a lot of us in the USA (in fact, there were no beertubers in the UK before Simon as far as I remember). I've been trying to revive the beertube community, but I can't do it alone.
    BTW hazy IPA and New England IPA are the same thing. Much like Double IPA and Imperial IPA.

    • @HopZine
      @HopZine Місяць тому +1

      For me it all peaked around 2014-2015. But I'd say that the decline is more economical than to do with quality. Reviewers come and go, people's loves change. Do it if you enjoy it and do it if you have the time.

    On the Apple front my first smart phone was an iPhone 3GS which my friend gave to me when he upgraded to an iPhone 5 and I was very grateful for it. A couple of years later I bought the said iPhone 5 off him for £100 and was happy with that for over 4 years until it couldn't hold a charge anymore. From the iPhone 6 onwards, Apple have been taking the piss with design choices and definitely price IMO, so when my iPhone 5 needed replacing I switched to Android and haven't looked back.
    I do like the Apple closed eco system which helps with security, and having to pay for most apps didn't bother me, but I just couldn't justify sticking with Apple when I could get an Android phone that does what I want for less than a quarter of the price. Also touch disease, deliberately slowing down the 6s, removing the headphone jack etc... and their shenanigans as far as right to repair goes just doesn't sit well with me. I know other companies have jumped on that bandwagon now, but paying at most £150 for a phone is where I'm at, and if it breaks it's at most £150 for a new one. I've had my Moto G7 Power now for almost 5 years and it's still going strong. I must admit though I don't live on my phone and I only have one because it's become a necessity ...

    Yeah, I think they have. The videos are all more or less identical and there's only so much you can get out of another person's reaction to a particular drink. I personally don't think beer reviews really work as recommendations either, because everyone who's watching is limited to whatever is available in their local shops. When they were a novelty beer reviews were good fun, but I think the trend has definitely run its course.

    They force creators to put out content. Normal people cannot do this due to other commitments so they rush and put out inferior content and also put annoying adverts in their videos.

    I think you were pretty much spot on with your opinion about beer reviews. I think they are a niche that will come and go over time unless you have a well-established channel. I wouldn't recommend it for a new channel unless they have a way to do that is very entertaining almost to the point where you didn't know it was a review. In general, beer related content is probably the hardest subject to build a channel and maintain as it is a subjective matter because of multiple factors. That is why I am pulling back on my channel. I can go on and on. Great job!

      There was an oversaturation of people turning on a camera that had little more personality than the camera itself.

    As for craft beer in general - I’ve gone back to traditional UK ales and German / Czech lagers. Craft beer shops (whether online or not) are too expensive, for whatever reason. Would rather spend money at the brewery shops direct now, or smaller breweries.

    Like anything in life, beer reviews have a shelf life. The drop in quality of beer, especially in supermarkets, has hurried up beer reviews not being as popular IMO, plus the cost of living and taxes on beer haven't helped either. Spot on with the German stuff making craft beer less desirable ...

    • @ScottReviewsThings
      @ScottReviewsThings  Місяць тому +1

      Supermarkets have played a huge part both ways here for me sid. The explosion a few years back into the supermarkets helped fuel the “craft beer” fire. It was everywhere and became the buzzword for anything remotely resembling a “craft beer”.
      Then. Their over saturation of mediocre bullshit has helped throw water on that fire.
      Each of these things have had an impact on UA-cam. An influx of beer reviews who all thought it was a peace of piss when the going was good. Rushing to get the new IPA out on their channel (me included). The the absolute baron wasteland of reviewers now who couldn’t give a shit.
      I sit somewhere in between. Still passionate about beer. But more circumspect with what I buy and show on the channel these days.

    Many beer reviewers have come and gone, Simon has been the main stayer, (though I'm a bit worried for his health) and like him, I have had enough of 'craft' beers, mainly because so many have been abused by using flavourings in the beers, ice cream sorbet, cordial etc, the supermarkets beers are all the same. Like Simon I have reverted to 'real' German and Czech beers, and regional brewers traditional ales. The best beer chanel is the 'Craft beer Chanel'. Jonny is a professional beer writer and brad is great, they offer a different approach. This country is having its beer heritage destroyed by fake foreign beers.
