  • Welp. I’m doing what I said I would never do. I’m going towards a more fluid, quick-shooting style when it comes to my ASL. Wish me luck!

Ive tried and failed at every shooting style. Ive missed gimmie shots trying to do all the motions correct and melted down in the heat of the moment. To me the Hill style way of shooting is the way to go hunting. I will never chsnge again. In the past i have made incredable shots on critters in a split second and enjoyed great success. I a quest to get better i destroyed my shooting with complication. Wont happen again.
Take the quiver off the Hill Style bow and you will se it come to life and shoot well from any angle.

i tried all different forms, anchors, back tension, and it made me shoot worse thinking about all that stuff, I shoot dead on when I don't think about any of that stuff, and my form and release are probably pretty bad, but I learned to go by feel and just focus on the spot and it works for me, I'm no Olympic target shooter but I always get it in the vitals, I think Jason Samkowiak on Traditional wilderness podcast has a good vid on it, he siad it's just a stick and a string and we tend to overcomplicate it.

I have been on the same path as you for the past several years. Long story short, I went from winning 3D shoots and indoor leagues to having a melt down at full draw. I tried several fixes but with only moderate success. I watch R.C. videos also and figured what do I have to lose, give it a try. I was having the same success as you but I was too inconsistent hitting anchor. What has been working for me is not thinking of my anchor as when to let go of the string. I pull into an anchor spot but just keep pulling with no thought of when to release, no trigger. Sometimes it's a half a second and sometimes its two seconds. I don't get the melt down and my grouping got more consistent. As with you it is still a work in progress but it seems like I am on the right track.

OUTSTANDING video! And you sure are shooting amazing with it. Notice how even when you do short draw they still hit where you want? The beauty of being close (20 and under) it doesnt matter!

If you have ever watched the movie “ The last Samurai “, when Tom Cruise was taking sword fighting lessons and was overcome with techniques and forms…..the young man approached him and said “ too much mind”. I feel a lot of people box themselves in with archery like this. You either need to shoot like your hungry or shoot to have fun. Get a much lighter bow and use a much lighter heart and you will be amazed at the simplicity and fun.

Are you an engineer by trade? Or maybe a statistical analysis?
I am an elevator mechanic, my focus is on electrical troubleshooting which is why I ask.
I have watched your videos for a long time, I listen to your podcast for a while. In the nicest way possible you overthink yourself into a paper bag.
I say all of this because i did it, rob green messed up his years of shooting , RC got himself all jammed up.
You should read Nate steens blog.
I also have some theorys on the Jenkins , push archery shooting stuff for the majority of people.
Do yourself a favor , put up your other bows for the summer, get three arrows with judo’s and go shoot dandelions, sticks, clumps. Far and close, soft rubber dog toys, literally just go have fun!!!
I am not sure how long you’ve been shooting, but I’ve been shooting a bow since I was eight years old, I’m 43 now.
Shooting a bow was always just about fun for me,
But I got myself in such a funk trying to over complicate this That it ripped away the joy I used to scoff at the statement that people quote from Howard Hill saying do you want to be a target archer or do you want to be a hunter you have to choose but there is a lot of truth to that.
If you want to work on that super strict style, get a barebow, or a heavy riser bow that your MIND associates with it,
When you want a free flowing, just plinking/hunting shot, grab that light as a wand bow and just go shoot.
Very FEW can do both, they are made for it. Look at Jimmy Blackmon , he is one who can mix disciplines.
Paul Mcchargue is one who is a great shot but doesn’t overthink, he also has a very unorthodox tournament style
Keep it up but relax, I can hear it in your voice that you are flustered, don’t let the target remove the witchery of archery for you.

Haha no. Not an engineer but I’m 1000% an over thinker. I do read Nate Steen’s blog. Great stuff. The biggest issue for me, especially with this particular bow, is that it’s taking too long to expand and shoot once I got my theoretical anchor. I end up creeping forward most times rather than slowly pulling backwards. It takes too long and I lose focus. My accuracy with all the other methods is no better than this fluid method of shooting.

    • @brianlocal3

@@bowhuntingsoul2149 tbh, don’t worry about target accuracy right now. throw out small rubber ball, stick , dandy lion etc. you will convince yourself you are close and it will help you settle
      mi wouldn’t worry about expanding
i think expanding, that particular word, is what messes people up. it’s the catch word right now. rick welch doesn’t talk much about it, byron ferguson doesn’t talk much about it.
also don’t worry about your “release” just relax your release hand, but keep your bow arm toward target
i’m a true believer that “expanding “ causes the bow arm to drop down and left, so many people over do it.

One Fletched with a judo, one bareshaft...And one fletched with field point are all I really use day in and day out.. a hay bale with not a thing on it..the ole haybale and random dandelions or pinecones are all I shoot at day to day anymore..

I use to shoot a lot back in the 80s started out with wheels the went to a recurve then a long bow. I always shot for fun got to the point where anything in 20 yards I could put the arrow on the spot. But I knew my limits. I tried to let my mind take over and just focus on where I wanted the arrow to go. Not so much a snap shot but when I reached my anchor the arrow was off. Try to enjoy shooting sometimes just let it be.

There's no such thing as "correct form" or "correct shooting". If its easily repeated and comfortable, is it really wrong?

Thanks for showing us a work in progress - very inspiring! There are as many ways to shoot a bow as there are archers. You are not shooting an Oly set-up, so why would you want Oly form? You have the right shooting style for an ASL. Your arrows are flying great - what more could you possibly want? I really don’t get why “snap shooting” is subject toso much derision. I mean, if it was good enough for Fred Bear, right?

I am able to shoot this way (pick a spot) only for short distances. Beyond 15 yards it doesn't work anymore, my brain and eyes start "thinking" about gap and point of aim. Hopeless.

I shoot with my thumb and with the arrow on the other side of the bow. I have received my fair share of commentary, not all positive, from people who shoot with fingers. I shoot well with the Asian thumb draw and I can do it on horseback. Why should I let adverse comments affect me?

keep it fun and simple. when you have to think about everything, it is too easy to not focus on the exact spot. when it becomes a chore, it's not fun. chase a tennis ball all over the place with blunts and or a flu flu. an even smaller target forces you to focus smaller at a real object, so much more fun and you would be surprised at how much better you will get in a weeks time. the more fun it is, the quicker you get at being better. don't expect to hit it for a while but keep at it. Soon your misses will be almost grazing it. Where I can, I throw dry beans out to shoot at, if I destroy them or lose them, oh well, got a lot more.

Your old shot isn’t breaking fast enough because your mind is still on the front of the shot (target). One you commit keep the target in your vision but your mind on execution 1000% & that shot will break for you. I don’t like what you’re doing because like a golf swing in archery bad habits will start to feel right. IMO it’s a mistake.
