Correct neither has an arrow shelf, it’s actually because it shoots in such a straight trajectory just a bit different in that way. “Fairbow” makes a good bow
Great testing as always brother. Really surprised with the helmet being penetrated. It's amazing how modern armour can stop fire arms but can fail (depending on weight) against ancient weapons. Also, shame about your 160lb.

Loved seeing how these arrows performed. Level 4 is rated to stop one round of 30-06 Armor Piercing ammo, 162 grains. Its about the hardest military cartridge that can be stopped. The step ups, like 338 Lapua, ignore body armor. Even if you could stop them, the energy still transferred into the target is deadly.
Im back again for my occasional check in lol. I don't comment much because im never signed in to UA-cam (to avoid the plague of adds.) I still watch every video tho. Your production quality has gotten so good man. Id say its just as good as any of the other channels out there now. And i love the cast of characters you're developing lol. RIP to the bow btw, a sad day for sure, she was a beauty. Also, i shoot the short eastern style bows like your Tiron. Mostly with thumb draw techniques.(i can only draw around 100# tho). Its totally fine the way youre shooting it. Obviously theres certain advantages to using a proper thumb draw technique, but if you make it work with your style thats fine. Anyway, great video man I've said it before and I'll say it again, the channel just keeps getting better, keep up the great work brother.
Thank you so much, my friend for checking in and always great to hear from you. So glad you enjoyed it and I’m glad that I am getting better 😁 I think to relearn the style would take a long time, especially to increase the strength in the thumb, so I’ll probably stick with the three finger draw just won’t be able to do speed shooting
This video was great. I’m floored seeing you draw that 130# bow. I use a 50# longbow and I feel that after a bit. I wouldn’t be able to get that 130# to budge. Haha
This is quite possibly your best intro yet 😂 Interesting results, too, and you absolutely have to keep the arrowhead in the helmet! Now, how about a new character for your lineup: Sir Bikesalot whose specialty is mounted archery from saddle of a race bike 😅

I had to subscribe if only for the hilarity. Being a former "grean bean" in the Army, one can imagine all of the different types of people we encounter. Lord knows that I've encountered most. 😂 I do love the traditional Asiatic bows. I haven't studied enough to understand why a thumb ring is used though.
Glad you enjoyed the humor my friend!! The thumb ring helps often to assist with heavier draw weights so it alleviates some of the stress on the thumb from the string
The thumb ring is used to protect your thumb, at higher draw weights the string tends to bite hard into your thumb, that was my experience at least (sorry for the bad english), oh and depending on the thumb ring it can help you get a cleaner release.
Great testing and also I like the funny acting! As someone who mainly practices Asistic archery, there is nothing wrong with shooting these bows with 3 finger draw, just use what method you're most comfortable with. For a while, I actually shot my Asiatic recurve bow with 3 finger draw due to a thumb injury. It felt weird at first, but after some practice I can be just as accurate with 3 finger draw
Thank you so much, my friend, I had a ton of fun making this video, both the tests and just trying to be funny. Yeah, it does work work for sure but I definitely feel like I could benefit from learning to use a thumb ring and a thumb draw
@@dashrendar5320 You should definitely give thumb draw a try! It is a different archery experience. I know you're very strong, but I suggest using a lighter draw weight when switching to thumb draw. Because it can really hurt your thumb
Yeah, I would for sure scale it back. I know anything with archery takes a long time to build up the tendons and ligaments. But it would be a blast to get skilled in other styles.
Back in the 80's when the UK was looking like a 1 party state, I had a friend who made resin units for the oil industry. He also had some state of the art kevlar riot shields (about 3/4 inch thick designed with NI riots in mind) made by the same company. Compound bow (60lb), heavy arrow and the right head and the arrow went through the shield and the sandbags behind with little impediment. Titanium plates were not around, but a good bodkin would punch through, might shatter though and that would tickle----.
Yeah, I was bummed out. I’m happy I have the flat though as it performs the same but just does not look as cool as a traditional though. However, I have the 175 pound I’ve been working towards so I’ll probably start bringing that out soon.
First time watcher and prior service USMC and Army Veteran and SGT Alphabro was too real. You parody and Archery skills are Elder Scrolls 100! Shame the algo took so long as this is right up my alley. But we're here now. This was amazing to field testing to see. Were those heavy recurve made for just foot and/or horse back as well?
Firstly, thank you for your service my friend and I am so happy you enjoyed Sgt Alphabro I had a ton of fun creating all the clichés I could think of in one. That bow in particular could be used on foot as well. It’s a much longer recurve, so it’s not as compact as many standard horse bows.
That 121lb going through the helmet would hurt like hell, but you would probably survive without any longterm injuries. The padding worn in the helmet creates a gap that would cover most of the penetration that arrow got.
Being both fascinated by medieval combat AND enjoying some recoil zen (ie, long distance shooting), this was awesome to watch. On the one hand, I'm impressed by the helmet both being penetrated as much as it was AND holding up as well as it did. On the other hand, modern armor is made to deal with modern threats after all so the kevlar vest being defeated isn't a surprise at all. The chest plate holding up isn't a huge surprise though, because the secrional density and energy transfer for an arrow probably isn't too far off of a high velocity rifle shot. I haven't done the math though. I would be curious to know if the ceramic did fracture though, because thats why those plates are basically "single use".
I've examined the footage at 13:26. These are the times in frames to reach the target. 130lb warbow: 13 (19375-19389) 121lb flatbow: 12 (19418-19431) 135lb recurve: 11 (19459-19471) Between parentheses are the last frames when the arrow is not yet loosed and the first frames when the arrow is on the target. To obtain the times in frames, I made the differences between the latter and the former and subtracted one to the result (because the arrows actually starts and arrives sometime between respectively the first and the second and the penultimate and the ultimate frames). Assuming 24 frames per second, these would be the times: 130lb warbow: 0.5417s 121lb flatbow: 0.5000s 135lb recurve: 0.4583s Assuming the distance is always 25 yards so 22.86 metres, these would be the velocities: 130lb warbow: 42.20m/s 121lb flatbow: 45.72m/s 135lb recurve: 49.88m/s Assuming the arrow weights exactly 1500 grains so 97.20 grams, these would be the kinetic energies: 130lb warbow: 86.55j 121lb flatbow: 101.59j 135lb recurve: 120.92j If I've not made some mistakes, I think that these kinetic energies are too low for these bows with this arrow, although the arrow may be too heavy. I suspect that either the distance was greater than 25 yards or the arrow was actually heavier than 1500 grains. Was it maybe a quarter pound arrow (1750 grains)? Regardless, it appears that the recurve bow obtained a 18.18% higher speed (so 39.67% higher kinetic energy) than the warbow despite being only 3.85% higher in draw-weight. Definitely, the hornen or hornen-like bow appears to be qualitatively superior to the medieval wooden bow.
Oooh, I love it when the recurve comes out. And don't worry about how you shoot it; just do what works best for you. And honestly, I don't blame you; switching from mediterranean to thumb draw feels like learning how to shoot all over again. Plus, I imagine your thumb will be real unhappy with you if you try to learn that on a 135lb bow.
I guess what we learned from this video: If you're wielding a (war) bow and are to face modern armor, go for (extremely) broad arrow heads and aim for the lower body.
Also, one of the things about modern day body armor is that While most people think of modern day body armor as pure ballistics, the majority of them aren't stabbed resistance, so they make actual purely stab resistant body armor as well as mixed ones to certain success rates. Interesting that if you decide to make this video for a third time to also test body armor that is designed to be resistance against modernize and blades and see what in force impacts such as a bow would do to such armor.
Very interesting that the recurve at similar draw weight shoots the arrow much faster. I guess that explains why those archer cultures went with recurve design, not just due to horse archery reasons.
They are much more efficient 100% it is also a fair sight heavier. The recurve is 135 at 28” while the longbow is 130 at 32” so it has much more power as well
@@dashrendar5320 These different bow designs as fascinating. When I was in the Tokyo museum tour, they had samples of war bows (Yumi) that were 2.4m long, and quite thick with an extreme taper. Its asymmetrical as you would know, and the arrow is shot at the lower 1/3 of the bow, not halfway. The tour-guide said it was designed as such to propel the heavier war arrows at higher speed, because the string return speed is faster at the lower 1/3 due to the non-symmetrical nature. The interest part is they tested the draw weight of these surviving samples, and it range from 120 to 210 pounds!

"Military?" (*Should I tell them I'm actually a mercenary?... No bad idea...) "Its classified."
"Classified, of course, its always classified."
You have really good form! Hitting those targets like a pro :)
Thank you most kindly my friend
Dude, these intros are awesome! 😂
Thanks man 😂 they are my favorite thing to make I think
Very cool video. I like the fact you have the power to do real tests with armor and warbows.
Thank you my friend! So glad you enjoyed it
Point of order. Kevlar helmets are made for ricochets, and shrapnel. Direct hits with 5.56 or larger will go through just like the 120lb bow.
I love the comment section as much as I liked this video. Great job!
Haha fully agree! The comments on this video were amazing, also glad you enjoyed it
the andrew tateling is the kicker. i never seen this channel before and i spent the lasst 2 minutes and 33 seconds of my life being very entertained and having a good time. new sub.
Glad to have you, my friend, glad you enjoyed it
That intro was hilarious 😆 but the outro destroyed me 😂😂😂 nice 1911 by the way.
Thank you so much. So glad you enjoyed it and got a laugh.
No idea how I stumbled across this, but I’m glad I’m here.
Haha happy you found it somehow 💪🏹
Quite simple - he summoned the algorithm gods. 16:13
Sire, the quality of those videos! nice as always!
Thank you so much. I am having a ton of fun making them.
Bodkin tips remain some of the coolest punchy arrowheads. Love it!
Haha my personal favorite as well
Alphabro had me rolling. "It's always classified" Just a spread shot of shade at guntubers 🤣
Keep the videos coming, hoss. Seriously one of my favorige channels 🤘🏿🤙🏿🏹
Also, I love seeing the asiatic bow making an appearance. Would love to see more of it.
Haha I had fun with that character…rolling all the stuff I could think of into one guy. Yeah it’s an absolute beast..man I struggle to aim with it though
@@dashrendar5320 You shoot off the hand with both correct? Neither has an arrow shelf? Is it the trajectory that is making it difficult to aim, or is it that the asiatic cuts in a little more at the arrow pass? I'm honeatly curious, because I'm coming from the otherside. I started with asiatic bows and I'm about to buy my first english longbow. Speaking of, any recommendations for a good first english longbow?
Correct neither has an arrow shelf, it’s actually because it shoots in such a straight trajectory just a bit different in that way. “Fairbow” makes a good bow
@@dashrendar5320 Gotcha, looking forward to the learning curve. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll keep you posted when I get it 🤙🏿🤘🏿🏹
This is such a good video. Love all the characters
Ok the intro alone deserves a like 😂, good job man continue being yourself 👍
Haha thanks my friend! Glad you enjoyed it
Great testing as always brother. Really surprised with the helmet being penetrated.
It's amazing how modern armour can stop fire arms but can fail (depending on weight) against ancient weapons.
Also, shame about your 160lb.
Yeah I was shocked for sure as well. I did not think it would be able to do that really but it proved me wrong. Also thank you it’s a bummer but it happens
SGTALPHABRO is such a good online game name :D
Haha I know right, basically channeled all the alpha cliches I could think of
oh my gosh I laughed so hard at this. I am not military but I have some military friends that act like the alpha bro. Also the hall pass names got me good. When I saw Hall Pass name: Aragorn I had to pause the video I was chuckling too much. Really great work. I bet you Tods Workshop would love a collab with you.
Haha glad you enjoyed it my friend! I would love to do something with Tod one day in the future he 100% is my favorite channel. There are not many Channels I watch every video but his is one I always make time for
I would love to know the process for writing these skits, just absolute gold. Revisiting old videos is a great idea
Haha I just try to think about how I would make myself laugh
Love your Bro's! Interesting testing you do here. Love Dash Renders videos! They are fun and interesting. 😍😍
Thanks so much,my friend.. I am so glad you enjoy them, they are an absolute blast to create
The stats were PERFECTION!
Haha thanks my dude
Loved seeing how these arrows performed. Level 4 is rated to stop one round of 30-06 Armor Piercing ammo, 162 grains. Its about the hardest military cartridge that can be stopped. The step ups, like 338 Lapua, ignore body armor. Even if you could stop them, the energy still transferred into the target is deadly.
That arrow that stuck in the helmet: probably survivable, but would scare the crap outta the whole platoon!🤣
Love this video. The intro is a bit long, yet both engaging and contextual.
Thank you so much! Yeah haha, I was thinking over 3 min was pushing it but I was having too much fun 😂
You need to work with Todd 😅
Also, I just can't get my eyes from your arms 💪💪
Great video!
Thank you! And man that would be a dream to meet up with Tod one day for sure
UA-cam will never live down the gratitude I feel right now for recommending me this channel 😂
That genuinely made me smile: thank you for that
Wow, thanks for breaking all that stuff for our entertainment! That was awesome 🙌🏻
Happily, my friend. It is truly the most fun thing to do.
Great episode. It's definitely hilarious. The intros got me.😂 Can Alpha bro make more appearances?
Haha thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it. Yeah I think he will pop in now and then 😂
Is this the reincarnated spirit of "Mad Jack" Churchill?
Haha I wish. That man is a legit legend
Haha
Thanks man! So glad you enjoyed it. Yeah I have been working for a really long time to build up the strength for the heavy bows
The saying goes “speed kills armor” so it makes sense the faster arrows performed better in soft armor. Cool stuff 👍🏾
Man, if someone hit my helmet with arrow when i'm out on patrol, I'm going to take it personal. Great content man. Subbing.
This is quite possibly your best intro yet 😂 Interesting results, too, and you absolutely have to keep the arrowhead in the helmet!
Now, how about a new character for your lineup: Sir Bikesalot whose specialty is mounted archery from saddle of a race bike 😅
Thank you so much. I had an embarrassing amount of fun making it that would be quite a ridiculously funny character.
@@dashrendar5320 That's what it's all about! Life should be about having fun and you certainly seem to have found ways to make it work for you. Although maybe take it a little easier on Grond as it's looking a little beat up...
Yeah, I need to find a blacksmith near me to see if that can be repaired
@@dashrendar5320 I guess that's what you get for spec'ing too heavily into archery and not smithing... Just craft several dozen iron daggers and you'll be able to repair it yourself 😅
Pretty cool/nerdy start!
Thanks my friend! Had way too much fun making it😂
That was a super cool video. The skits were hilarious. 😂 👍👍
Thank you, my friend. I had a ton of fun making them.
Not sure how this wound up in my feed but hilarious. Definitely subscribed!
Thank so much.
Glad it gave you a laugh
using the kettlebell as bait, that's gold man lol
Haha the ultimate bro trap
😂love this one😂😂 where's my 9, but bows is where my my brothers and me started
Haha glad you enjoyed it my friend
RIP for your bow brotha, sad day. Kinda badass that you shot out a longbow though
Man, I cant see Dash the ye ole Longbowman the same after sgtalphabro joined the fight 😂😂😂
😂😂😂 the illusion has been shattered, don’t worry…I am still the ye ole bowman…
That 121lb going through the helmet would hurt like hell, but you would probably survive without any longterm injuries. The padding worn in the helmet creates a gap that would cover most of the penetration that arrow got.
Yeah that is true. It would jar you bad but I don’t think that’s gonna be lethal. Just quite a bit shocking 😂
Alright this was good, this was good. Got a laugh right out the gate of my day. 😂
Awesome man! Happy to hear it
Lmao this guy could put an arrow in your eye and he is test the strength of armor 😂😂😂😂😂 great video man best of luck
Haha thanks my friend! Glad you enjoyed the video
Ohh nice I asked about this thanks dash for the great content
You are most welcome, my friend. Glad you enjoyed it. It was a blast.
I've examined the footage at 13:26.
These are the times in frames to reach the target.
130lb warbow: 13 (19375-19389)
121lb flatbow: 12 (19418-19431)
135lb recurve: 11 (19459-19471)
Between parentheses are the last frames when the arrow is not yet loosed and the first frames when the arrow is on the target. To obtain the times in frames, I made the differences between the latter and the former and subtracted one to the result (because the arrows actually starts and arrives sometime between respectively the first and the second and the penultimate and the ultimate frames).
Assuming 24 frames per second, these would be the times:
130lb warbow: 0.5417s
121lb flatbow: 0.5000s
135lb recurve: 0.4583s
Assuming the distance is always 25 yards so 22.86 metres, these would be the velocities:
130lb warbow: 42.20m/s
121lb flatbow: 45.72m/s
135lb recurve: 49.88m/s
Assuming the arrow weights exactly 1500 grains so 97.20 grams, these would be the kinetic energies:
130lb warbow: 86.55j
121lb flatbow: 101.59j
135lb recurve: 120.92j
If I've not made some mistakes, I think that these kinetic energies are too low for these bows with this arrow, although the arrow may be too heavy.
Thanks for that my friend! Yeah I would need to slowly work up to get there with the thumb for sure
Thanks a lot, enjoyed the video. Definitely keep the arrow head in the helmet, it's a great conversation piece.
So glad you enjoyed it my friend! Was an absolute blast to make it
I guess what we learned from this video: If you're wielding a (war) bow and are to face modern armor, go for (extremely) broad arrow heads and aim for the lower body.
All I could think of was the Na'vi from James Cameron's Avatar going against the RDA. I geeked out a little bit.
Haha yeah those bows would pack quite a bigger punch than mine 😂
Just discovered your chanel. Love your style, bit Kentucky-Esque with the intro, but quite good and funny!
Only thing I have to complain about, hey I'm german, is the editing and the excessive use of background blur.
I think you need a better camera :D
Keep it up! Looking forward to future videos.
Thank you, my friend. Camera definitely an investment one day. I still just use my iPhone 14 and editing is just something I do on my own with no real training so it’s a small shop but I’m glad you enjoy it
the "LOOT!" made me laugh so much for no reason 🤣🤣🤣
Haha glad it gave you a chuckle
Soft and ceramic did as expected but was surprised how much it penetrated the helmet!
Yeah, it surprised me too. My reaction was genuine. It was really fun to see.
Absolutely love your content, and the fact that you know Joe Gibbs, that just made it an insta subscribe. But this content absolutely deserves that subscribe without anything else being considered. Now I'm going to nerd out))
Thank you so much, my friend. I truly appreciate that. He is definitely the only person that I think of what an ancient archer would be capable of, a true snapshot of history
Zu geil das Video. 😂😂😂
I love your Videos❤
Thank you so much, my friend. I am so glad you enjoyed them.
Noo r.i.p the good old 165 lbs
Yeah it had a good run but man it’s a bummer for sure
