You are absolutely right, in order for American companies to survive in competition with China, cooperation is needed, not war! Whether it's economic or any other! And Ford's example in this is extremely revealing and interesting! Because it's too late to try to strangle the Chinese economy now, as they say in Russia, "it's too late to take medicine when the kidneys have already failed"! For my part, I can say that we all like Ford's design, so why not combine the advantages of the company for their joint prosperity?
What happens if the Chinese Government has a word in the ear of the Ford JV partner and says "Don't export vehicles badged "Ford" or parts which will be assembled as "Ford" in Mexico". Those vehicles will still leave the factory and be sold within BRICS.
Не знаю, русский Вы или нет, но поговорка звучит немного по другому, хотя общий смысл одинаков - "поздно пить боржоми когда почки отказали" - It's too late to drink Borjomi if your kidneys have already failed", что отсылает к минеральной воде из Грузии - Borjomi, которую в советское время рекомендовали людям с болезнью почек, желудка и так далее.

Price wise, American car makers have no chance whatsoever to rival Chinese manufacturers. Regardless of the quality, cars have suddenly become ridiculously expensive in America these days.
China is progressing on all fronts. Its EVs development is incredibly impressive. All countries have subsidy in the form of tax incentives rebates etc. subsidy is not a crime. It is a blessing to green technology boost businesses affordability to global consumers 👍❤️🇨🇳
Nobody needs a 1,000 Hp pick up, unless it is a exotic car. Americans will find out reverse engineering is a discipline of its own. If reverse engineering is easy, you would see Canadian EVs makers and Congolese hybrids
The Americans can reverse engineer all they want, but they aren't as bright as they have deluded themselves into believing. They only had an economic boom after WWII due to the jumpstart from confiscating nearly all foreign assets belonging to German companies, and stealing their patents throughout the world, along with blackmailing and deporting all their scientists and engineers into working for yankees to help interpret the IP schematics and documentations as the Americans themselves were too low-IQ to interpret a thing. The Americans, as the masters of IP thievery, concocted a grand plan with an almost savage determination to plunder the entire nation of Germany itself, to the maximum extent possible. Think Operation Paperclip and Overcast.

Does Brazil, Mexico, or Australia having any Truck manufacturing companies? I am not aware of any. And that is why they wouldn’t have tariffs on them. The U.S., if smart, will 100% tariff EVERY product coming in from other countries that we produce ourselves. Why? To force negotiations on the part of those countries. Too often the U.S. allows in products from other countries with little to no tariffs, while other countries have massive tariffs for products coming in from the U.S. It is the exact reason why you hardly see any U.S. manufactured cars or other products in many certain other countries. But if we do the same back to them and threaten to take away the U.S. market, you can guarantee they will start to negotiate and possibly allow U.S. manufactured products to possibly come in. In the case of some countries (maybe China), they might not care. But perhaps you will see the U.S. start to manufacture more things again then.
@@chazaqs9109 you do know how many American companies operate in China...everything from Costco, Starbucks, KFC, Walmart, Nike, Apple, etc... to even the smallest companies like Smarties stores that you won't find in the states. And what about grains, chicken, pigs, corns, and soybeans, etc...they were, past tense sold to China from US until political and economic tension risen...and China opt out to buy from BRIC and other countries. @@chazaqs9109 Doesn't matter if they don't have any truck manufacturing, they're a potential market. Buick, Ford, Jeep were operating and profiting from China for over two decades, and now they can't compete because there's Chinese EV. Buick will likely be the last to leave, since Ford and Jeep left for the above reason. If cars/trucks aren't cater to local taste or are just plain expensive, they're obviously not going to sell. China have a 15% tariff on imported cars...and USA have the following auto 2.5% trucks 25% motorcycles 2.4%...
@chazaqs9109 , in case you are not aware of the function of WTO and all the trade agreements around the world. All countries are allowed some kind of subsidies for certain critical products (which is exception, not the rule) but to say that US freely and generously allow imports from other countries without tariffs and other countries happily impose tariffs on US products are totally untrue. That's why we have the WTO and trade agreements.
The politicians are just in place to help the businesses destroy competition and keep their monopolies until they can’t hold back the tide anymore. Remember how much they fought the Japanese and European car makers when they first started trying to enter the US markets? The US desperately needs lower priced cars in our markets to drive down the price of new cars from our manufacturers.
Great video. Ford needs to do what American phone manufacturers do: add value, packaging and marketing to Chinese manufactured product. But you can't do that if huge tariffs are applied. You have to think about inflation!
What happens if the Chinese Government decides those vehicles would be better sold in let's say Africa and NOT under the Ford name assembled in Mexico?
In addition to paying for the tariffs, Americans also have to bear additional inflation. This is the American version of a win-win-let the government win the people twice.
I was wondering when you would talk about the Ford CEO's 2023 visit to China, the first one since your three older videos! Another great video! P.S. Love the mountains!
Ford Motor CEO said few days ago, he knew the US is so lack behind China only after he went to visit China, and China is advancing itself with light speed, which I won't be surprised if he was just saying something nice, and I would be very surprised if he really meant that. But nonetheless, note this, he is the CEO of one of the most important corp in the west, now you guys think about many who aren't. :)
Not even close. ford has a pragmatic CEO TRYING to did his way out of the hole he was dropped in. Tesla had a CEO with the Balls, tenacity and skill to start from zero and (Probably) win.
Not only the f150, the facts are the 60s, or upto 80 or 90s Americans make some or many important innovations and manufacturing products the world wants. Even today Americans still ahead of the world in many things hi-tech and advantage in science and technology. The problem is China catching up fast and in 2024 onward, there's no way anyone can stop them and I meant there's absolutely no reason to stop Chinese advancing and improving themselves. So it's just a matter to figure out how to living in this world coexistence peacefully amongst each other!
Some people such as DYI-ers like to save money and do their own property maintenance and renovations. I have no statistics on the proportion of such buyers take up the SUV market.
Tesla is (#4 on the list). Toyotas have always been the top selling cars in the U.S. because everyone knows they last the longest and tend to have less problems.
It is such a shame that only Ford is just now seeing the writing on the wall, which all U.S. carmakers should have years ago, on what they need to do. They have spent so much time telling the U.S. consumer what to buy instead of allowing them to make that decision, that the U.S. carmakers cannot compete against cars to sell to U.S. consumers even they make them in China. Plus the need for short-term profit and gain with multimillion dollar exec salaries and golden parachutes when they leave, does not promote for long-term profit stability. You play, you pay, I was taught at a young age in business and it still rings true today. The corporate and wealthy individual income sectors paid all those campaign donations and bribe dollars for tax breaks and credits targeted just for them (paid by the middle-class), which is just short-term thinking and now they are crying that they can't compete. I say let the dollar devalue enough so that our factories and farmers and corporations will be on equal footing as other manufacturing countries, or else just shut up about the Chinese! Fact remains, they make products as equal or of better quality than us (the U.S.) for a lot less money which means more and more of there citizens can afford thinks like cars, smartphones, and laptops better than we do here in the U.S.
We ceded our industry to China in hopes they would be the cheap component supplier while all the design, engineering and finance would be conducted in the US. But what they failed to grasp is that design, engineering and finance incubate around centers of manufacturing. It's like we never saw it coming it happened so fast.
SUV's and pick-up trucks made in USA are subsidized by the govt through direct (25% tariff on foreign made ones) and indirect (tax breaks) subsidies. Which is why v don't c foreign made ones even though they would likely be better
Subsidies will only make you less and less competitive, and sticking to the local market will only make you lose more overseas markets. The whole society pays for certain private enterprises, but they don't give it to you when they make money. It will only sell you more expensive products that you have no choice to replace.
@@zen-mc4ju True. That's reality today. However, was it meant to be this way ? 🤔 Subsidies make sense at the early stages or when the enterprise is building up, not when the enterprise makes profit. These Chinese companies are expanding in all markets that welcome them. So, the local subsidies seems to have prepared them for global competition.
It is good that Ford is doing its homework. If they can build good products. Economically people will buy them. It's simple logic. Every country should concentrate on what it does well. For example, Rolls-Royce, Pratt and Whitney and GE make excellent jet engines and are competitive in the world market. Innovation and world-class manufacturing have a tendency to find markets and succeed. America and Europe has spent too much time on financial instruments instead of real products, unfortunately.
I have been using a lot of rental vans lately and I will admit that the Ford Transit is my favourite van right now. It’s near perfect, I would like to see an electric version. We don’t have any Chinese vans available right now but would love to try them.
Won't be able to cooperate with Chinese manufacturers when the hardware and software is banned. Galapagos model for the US automotive industry courtesy of US lawmakers...🤣
Poor EV sale in the US is not due to the make of the vehicle; it's due to insufficient infrastructure to support operation of the vehicle. If government (preferably at the state level) creates incentive for power companies to build charging stations, range anxiety will not be an issue in the minds of EV drivers. And if more people consider buying EVs and thus creating a demand, more quickly the prices of EVs will come down. If American governments did this, together with other incentives, at the same time the Chinese governments did theirs, Americans would not find themselves in the present predicament, ie. facing stiff Chines competition. Now the Biden admin is even considering banning Chinese techs in cars, which are already ahead of the US, the American automobile industry will fall further behind the Chinese. 10 years from now, Americans will still be driving gas guzzlers while the Chinese are driving smart, environmentally friendly cars.
Americans have this funny split-brain utopian syndrome. On one side they're sanctioning and tariffing to the extreme in order to protect non-existent industries which only hurt the people, while on the other they're opening the floodgates of border security to bring in millions of illegal migrants to wreck their already-homeless-infested cities - which you guessed it, also hurt the people due to violence, huge drain on public welfare, etc.
And where is the Chinese electricity coming from to power all those electric cars? Wind and Solar? Not so green if they have to use traditional power stations to provide electricity. The other problem with EVs in the U.S., besides range, is weather. The EVs need to be able to handle the extreme cold and heavy snow in some parts of the U.S. in addition to the range problems. Plus people don’t want to wait 30 minutes for a battery to charge even if they had more charging stations. I personally think hybrids are the way to go until other types of innovations come around that fix these types of issues (might even be a different fuel source like hydrogen).
@@chazaqs9109first, China is the world's leader in green energy, so a lot of it is green, and specifically the trash energy at night, too. Second, a power plant is 200% more efficient than the tiny engine in your car, and has a lot more emission control mechanism compared to that small filter in your car.
Apart from Tesla, no western EV ambitions will stand a chance if a western legacy car company doesn't work with a Chinese EV manufacturer to create models to compete with the Chinese (and other western brands). There's not just the technology and supply-chain deficit, it's also the time it takes to develop essentially from scratch. So what Ford is doing is the only way to stand a chance. It's a business model that other western legacy brands should copy.
"Master Plan 2006"? The one which ended ("Don't tell anyone") What Ford is doing WILL NOT save the uS economy. The ONLY way to do that is to INVITE CHINA IN.... and "request" the same terms applied to US companies in China pre-Tesla. It's the ONLY way to first "Be in the (NEW) game", Then Learn while catching up, while avoiding either a trade war or worse still a SHOOTING WAR which USA will lose.
Tesla would never have survived either without relying on Chinese batteries. Gigafactory Shanghai is where 60%+ of Teslas around the globe come from. Elon's strength is marketing, not innovation. Real innovation happens on the factory floor and that was where his gigacasting "innovation" came from, a company based in Hongkong which makes plastic injection molds. Just wait until it's too obvious for Tesla's fanboys that Tesla's self-driving tech is WAY behind Huawei and BYD. 🤣🤣🤣
Changan is having a lot of success with its small and medium sized EVs, a good move for Ford would be to produce these in the US to grab market share itself. Changan is state owned, so that may ruffle a few feathers in the US Security State. BYD will simply move up the curve to full size pickups, as Toyota did, to kill the big 3 sales in Southern and Central America.
China have the engineers, have the supply chain, have the infrastructure, even have its own local market. But one thing China lack most, the experience to sell globally. BYD is likely the most famous brand of China EVs. But the fact is, Geely is doing better than BYD oversea b'cos Geely have multi-partners for various region to sell their cars. China is a big market but there're like over 100 car manufacturers, some are doomed to be push out of business. You don't need to be like Teala to build magafactories in China, they're already there, you just need to pick some of them.
By globally, you mean the so-called West? My friend the centre of gravity of world trade is shifting eastwards, just look at the economic dynamism in SouthEast Asia and other emerging markets.
Nope. China has totally opened up their car market to all manufacturers. Tesla factory in Shanghai produces hundreds of thousands of their EVs every single year and sell them in China's market, and they do not get any tariff.
@@verypleasantguy He's talking about making these Changan-Ford cars in China and shipping them back to the US for sale. This would incur a 100% tariff as the cars are made in China, but that's not Ford's goal; they are worried about losing markets outside the US, and lowering cost by manufacturing the cars in China will lower the cost and price of these Changan-Ford cars when competing with Chinese brands in the market outside of US.
My understanding is that Farley isn't saying that Ford will abandon markets as said in this video but to reset goals and prove to Ford leadership the imperative to exceed current performance and that Ford must innovate or face extinction. Also, I think this video became unnecessarily creative analyzing Ford's current marketshare of trucks vs sedans, although that has been true for over a decade isn't likely relevant to Ford's strategies. Additionally, there were only 3 major domestic US car companies Ford, GM/Chevrolet and Chrysler bwhich has since been sold and today is Stellantis. The Japanese car companies mentioned in this video manufacture oractically all cars sold in the US although nowadays factories don't often make what is sold locally but manufacture particular models that are sold globally.
i remember martin yan the cook that said the difference between chinese restaurants vs american style chinese restaurants are the price, chinese are more competitve than the over pricing of american goods and the strategy is the same for chinese companies, the ceo, in china, has alot of power and can move investor's decisions with a strong argument but the american investors wants to see profits over long term financial goals and hardworking employees and that's the difference
I wonder if when American auto brands are on the brink of ruin, the Chinese will of course offer to buy them out. You can't think of a greater humiliation for Uncle Sam.

And how many rich westerners are there!?? Obviously the Western pyramid doesnt work like that! The design brief for Western exclusive car manufacturers are for the very top of the pyramid the elites! Majority of the people are at the bottom! China is providing for the bottom as well as knocking down the pyramid! NOT just the car industry either!
Economic protectionism is on the rise. Even if the Chinese made the offer, I don't think Uncle Sam is keen on selling. Just look at US Steel. Both Dem and Rep aren't keen to sell it to Nippon Steel, despite the fact that it's the main lifeline for this financially troubled company
No one trusts the USA anymore after USA stole from Iraq, Libya, Venezuela and Russia (via the EU lapdogs). Some of this recalls a moment during the 1980s. Mercedes took pride in applying 100% quality control inspection as the final step in building their cars. They discovered that Toyota were using about the same man hours to build AN ENTIRE CAR as Mercedes did in applying 100% inspection. It reflected a broad spectrum of elements, starting with production engineers being involved at the design stage, thus pointing out how to adjust the car's styling to minimize costs in the production process.
Ford’s biggest competitor right now are the small Japanese Kei Trucks which have just been banned in the USA. They are tiny in comparison to American trucks but they are cheap and cheap to run. Even farmers like them. Small enough for the occasional farm job but practical enough for everyday needs.
Fords biggest issue is expensive manpower cost. Meaning unions. No one talks about infamous 996 chinese workers need to endure. 9am-9pm 6days per week.
Farley should know who their Chinese competitors before thinking of what to do. BYD is a solid EV producer and they are top in battery production as well. US big 3 auto is a bit late on thinking to produce cheap EV for export out of US. Unless US government realise that suppressing already solid manufacture chain of China is too late and frankly devastating for US companies.
Thank you Kevin and team, this was very telling… Please, please can you share your thoughts on the anti-China foreign media bill (HR 1157) and any other mechanisms currently used by the US or other administrations.
Implications of such candid admission by Ford’s chief means. Shenyang WS-15 will be at par in quality to engines produced by Rolls Royce, GE, P&W. Which Means already produced 300 J-20, and 1000 by 2030 at current production rate, would eclipse the regional air forces. J-20 being the second only twin engine 5th Gen fighter in the world. While F-22, worlds first and once most formidable air fighting war machine will be phasing out. There are only 187 of them produced for USAF. Ford is another sinking ship and he knows it. The hull is already flooded and no diversification will save it, whether it'd be another 2008 bailout.
Who needs cooperation if USA thinks they can simply wipe China from the surface of this planet with their al-mighty GI Joe ?

Americans will find out reverse engineering is a discipline of its own. If reverse engineering is easy, you would see Canadian EVs makers and Congolese hybrids
Turkey did, they copied China's J-20 !
BYD Shark pickup truck is already introduced in Brazil after Mexico, and available next month in Australia....while US and Canada slapped 100% tariff
Aussies are smart people.but got hoodwinked by big brother to buy their sub.
The politicians are just in place to help the businesses destroy competition and keep their monopolies until they can’t hold back the tide anymore. Great video. Ford needs to do what American phone manufacturers do: add value, packaging and marketing to Chinese manufactured product. But you can't do that if huge tariffs are applied. You have to think about inflation!
Most listed American corporations are actually zombiefied companies.
What happens if the Chinese Government decides those vehicles would be better sold in let's say Africa and NOT under the Ford name assembled in Mexico?
In addition to paying for the tariffs, Americans also have to bear additional inflation. This is the American version of a win-win-let the government win the people twice.

The thing that I was surprised about was the Japanese car manufacturers are benefiting the most from the 100% tariffs
Tesla is (#4 on the list). Toyotas have always been the top selling cars in the U.S. because everyone knows they last the longest and tend to have less problems.
It doesn't really benefit Japan because at the end of the day Japan is still owned by the master
Spot on.

We ceded our industry to China in hopes they would be the cheap component supplier while all the design, engineering and finance would be conducted in the US. Plenty saw it coming over 20 years ago. Nobody in a position to do anything about it listened.

SUV's and pick-up trucks made in USA are subsidized by the govt through direct (25% tariff on foreign made ones) and indirect (tax breaks) subsidies. Which is why v don't c foreign made ones even though they would likely be better

@@mikemiller659 true. Which probably is one of the reasons most manufacturers have their base there.

Sadly all your compelling arguments for EVs failed to recognise the formidable US oil lobby roadblock.
Its almost the entire top 10 list....

I'm really surprised that BYD hasn't approached Ford or Chevy, to put their brand labels on BYD vehicles made in Mexico.
BYD is thinking of purchasing Chrysler from Stellantis
It might get tariffed anyway.
Just let private companies compete
They can do it .... Gov. Need to take care of its people first
FYI Ford in the United States no longer sell sedans.
Removing Chinese gantry cranes is a crazy ideal, How will US ports operate?
Awaiting delivery of BYD Atto full specs 2025 in a couple of weeks.
Building cars in China will incur the US, EU tariff. 100% tariff in the US
How about Tesla?
Thank you Kevin and team, this was very telling…
Please, please can you share your thoughts on the anti-China foreign media bill (HR 1157) and any other mechanisms currently used by the US or other administrations.
One would reckon that's outside of Kevin's sphere of business interests.
So, it’s not just Naval manufacturing yards churning out better than Aegis class destroyers at breakneck speed but Aerospace manufacturing as well keeping up the velocity.
Even selling the ford lightning at 70k, they are LOSING 30k + per sale! So ford really cant sell lightning in volume or they will lose a pile of $$$.
It is only a matter of time until many mid and full size pickups will be available from Chinese brands...available worldwide.
Waiting for BYD arrival to change my Ford Ranger
Chinese vehicles are extremely unsafe...China is just now starting to crack down on the safety issues because these vehicles are being exported and these incidences are reported in non-Chinese media.
@@MarcDunivan Is that why America needs to place 100% tariff on Chinese vehicles? That's American propaganda for you: anything developed first by another nation will not actually exist in the American mind or be recognised in the American narrative until it is subsequently copied and produced by the Americans, at which point they will assume full credit for having taken a flawed and primitive foreign concept and developed it into the only real good version.
Not sure if Ford has learned anything.
Ford has been selling an hybrid pickup-the Maverick-and it is very popular. Made in Mexico. Small truck @ $30 K
