    I live in Shanghai, and I see them often. The Taycan inspiration is undoubtedly there, but it is completely different and unique once you see it in person. The Taycan created a typology (or topography?) and this car follows that typology. I don't see it as a direct copy, it is the same that happened in the late 70s and 80s when Mazda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Ford, Pontiac, and Chevrolet, all followed the same trends to design cars, or just look at how the Volkswagen Golf created a whole category of cars that looks alike. The proportions of the Xiaomi are way better than the Taycan, with plenty of space in the back seats, way more range and tech, and even quicker acceleration, almost 1 second faster... best thing so far is the price, unbeatable there.

    • @alexli5279

      I live in shanghai as well and I always mistake the SU7 for a taycan on the road at first glance. they are attractive but as a Taycan owner I still think the taycan looks more aggressive with the wider stance and lower roof line. cant beat that price though, although the badge is not that sexy since Xiaomi is really a budget brand even by chinese standards

    • @bonaudi
      @bonaudi 26 днів тому +9

      @@alexli5279 Maybe because I'm a designer I would never mistake a Xiaomi with a Taycan (from almost any angle are different), all the rest of the things you said are true. There are so many going around that it's nothing exclusive, same feeling as a Tesla Model 3 in Shanghai, just a car. But let's be honest EV-performance-wise, it destroys the Taycan (not in breaking or cornering obviously). I still pick the Porsche even with those flaws. ;)

    The Chinese knew from the start no matter what they do, they'd be called copycats. That's why Xiaomi had Tianyuan Li of BMW, James Qiu of Mercedes Benz, and also Chris Bangle in charge of the SU7 design.
    If you look at all the foreign designers currently working for Chinese car manufacturers, it's straight out a who's who list of auto design elites. Do the Chinese really need these foreign designers? Probably not, but they do serve the purpose of silencing some preconception and prejudice.

    Im Chinese. After Xiaomi released this car, over a billion Chinese people scrutinized it under a microscope, trying to find any flaws. But now, six months later, no one has found anything. I can only say Xiaomi has truly done an impressive job, and Lei Jun has given us a huge surprise. From speed and range to body structure-not to mention Xiaomi’s strengths in software and IoT-it’s remarkable.

    • @threesixnine369six
      @threesixnine369six 26 днів тому +10

      6 months is not enough. Also "over a billion Chinese people scrutinised it under a microscope" sounds like 2/3 of China's population are car manufacturing experts and quality technicians, which is a bit ironic for anyone with an objective balanced view of the last three decades of Chinese products. This is a new wave though, so it could be the moment when China finally manages to enter in its high quality era, but these new cars need to stand the test of time. Do you think Toyota just woke up one day and said "oh look at our high quality cars" ? No, it took many decades and many Toyota models to build this strong reputation for quality.

    The ceo of xiaomi is really based, they started off making phones, the phones are pretty good for the price, he openly said Huawei's phones are overpriced for what it is, people in China made fun of his funny accent when he's speaking English and made a remix song from him speaking English, he fully embraced the meme and put the song in their phone as a ringtone option. Years later he decided to make a car, he made one and got a racing license, made a video of him drifting and took the prototype to the Nurenburg race track and drove it himself. I don't think EVs are well developed enough to make gas cars irrelevant but their prototype performance car looks pretty cool. He would be a fun guest to have on Top Gear if it's still a thing

    For him to say this publicly does make me think it's more of a rally cry to up Ford's EV game. I just hope it also means Ford could up their general sedan game, since they left the market essentially to become an SUV/Truck company. A Ford sedan would be a welcome thing, even if it was only an EV. Although with the EV push starting to face more realities and stalling a little any Ford sedan would be welcome.
    As for the Xiaomi itself. It is nice but definitely an amalgam design. But still admittedly well done. Chinese EVs though are heavily subsidized which is why they can sell at those prices. Even if imported, I wonder if they would do it at that pricing. Although I'm sure they would still undercut say Tesla.
