I also agree with Jeff. Dune Part Two is a phenomenal film that should get in for Adapted Screenplay and several other awards. I hope it gets in. Loved this episode! Happy New Year and FYC you next year 🎉🎉🎉
I love Scott's energy towards the end - so damn joyful. Nice to see Jeff being so upbeat and a lil less sassy. Appreciate all the work you three put into this!
Here's my thoughts on Emilia Perez: Since around 2016-2017 when OscarsSoWhite really became a thing with the Oscars and the industry as a whole, there is at least one or two films that are the big 'representation' films. In 2017, it was Moonlight with arguably Fences and Hidden Fences pulling up the rear. In 2018, it was Get Out. In 2019, it was Black Panther with Roma pulling up the rear. In 2020, it was Parasite. In 2021, I'd say it was a three way split between Minari, Ma Rainey and Black Messiah. In 2022, it was CODA which was a very different kind of representation with the closest other one being King Richard. In 2023, it was far and away Everything Everywhere All at Once. In 2024, it was Killers of the Flower Moon with American Fiction pulling up the rear. I think both pundits and studios look for that film that will be the big representation push and I think Netflix genuinely thought they'd be able to make that happen with Emilia Perez because it checks a lot of boxes. It stars a trans woman playing a trans woman, it features a largely Hispanic/Latino main cast, it's almost entirely in Spanish. On paper it hits a lot of boxes. But the problem is very much who was behind the camera and I think that's where a lot of the flack is going. Even as it concerns Selena Gomez, while people are railing her accent and performance as being bad, there's quite a few more saying its on the part of the writer/director who didn't seem to do any research into Mexican culture. Nor did he do much on the trans experience. With Parasite, Moonlight, Minari, Black Messiah, Roma, King Richard, Black Panther and so on they had writers, directors, producers, consultants, creative heads and so on who were actually from that background so it at least read to outsiders as more authentic because most of the criticisms of those movies had very little to do with how those respective cultures were represented. CODA got flack for not having any deaf artists on the production team and while I don't think it hurt it those criticisms were definitely very vocal from the deaf community. Many Academy voters like to avoid controversy and will avoid films that are bogged by issues they don't fully understand. I think that's a large part of why The Color Purple didn't do so well in the 1980's as far as wins go. Emilia Perez has a lot of backlash from Mexican/Spanish Speaking and Trans communities. I can see a lot of older voters being lukewarm on the film itself and also not wanting to have the issues surrounding the film overshadow everything else and decide to vote for something else. What CODA had it in its favor is that while not amazing it was a relatively feel good family friendly inoffensive film. Yes there were criticisms from the deaf community but there were many from the deaf community who praised what it tried to do. I have not seen a ton of that from Emilia Perez. What the film would need is for heavy hitting directors and actors from the Spanish speaking world to go to bat for it to assuage some concerns about the film. But that hasn't really been happening. I work in the industry and have a lot of industry friends who are both Latino and trans respectively, none of them particularly cared for it. A common complaint I have heard is that they felt like it should have been two separate movies each dealing with the topics in depth. The idea of a cartel leader trying to turn over a new leaf could be a film all on its own. But then you toss in the trans themes and now it's a musical and it's juggling a lot and it doesn't do all of them well. Adding onto that Best Picture winners have typically been crowd pleaser films even in the last ten years or so. CODA, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Green Book, The Shape of Water all very neatly fit into that box. I'd even argue Parasite and Spotlight fit into that as well. Nomadland is somewhat of an outlier but we haven't seen them go for anything like that since. Emilia Perez either has superfans or super haters. I don't see it winning Best Picture, I really don't see it winning Best Actress and it'd be lucky to get either of those nominations including anything for Screenplay which is one of the most derided parts of the entire film. I'm predicting it gets into Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress and maybe one of the songs. But I don't think it's getting a ton of nominations like people are expecting. EDIT: Another thing to add onto how little Mexico feels properly represented is that they have a total of one actual Mexican involved in the film. Selena doesn't count since she's American. With international voters being a larger bloc now I can see those from Latin America being very cold towards the film for that reason and many more.
@sjnscnslsf Thanks. I've been thinking a lot about this recently because even I assumed Emilia Perez would be able to capture a lot of that energy but the biggest problem it has is not being good enough to overcome a lot of the flaws it has. If the film was outright undeniable or succeeded in giving viewers a very warm satisfied feeling at the end, many of these issues concerning Mexican and trans representation could otherwise be ignored. That certainly was the case for GreenBook and CODA. Emilia Perez fails as a musical in many respects because there's both too many songs and they don't add a goddamn thing. There is almost no song in the film that couldn't just be people talking. There's no natural progression to the singing. The golden rule of musical theater is that when speaking is no longer enough to communicate your emotions you sing. When singing is no longer enough you dance. Emilia Perez doesn't follow that structure and therefore the songs don't seem necessary to the narrative. Adding on top of this that the songs aren't that well composed, might have been smart to use a composer from Mexico for the musical about Mexico, the musical aspect of the film ends up working against it. I truly believe if it were a Moulin Rogue style spectacle then a good chunk of this backlash wouldn't be so loud. People like to say oh the internet doesn't matter but that's not exactly true. Voters pay attention to social media because they're human just like us. Everything Everywhere All at Once is not a film that gets carried all the way April 2022 to the Oscars purely on the strength of the film. It took a dedicated fanbase to keep that film top of mind and even encourage their studio to push the film. I think negative attention really will hurt Emilia Perez. Had it come out ten or fifteen years earlier it would be fine probably. But it very much reminds me of Slumdog Millionaire and by and large those films don't win much anymore.
@@isaiahwilson5495 i agree completely about the musical aspect that you mentioned, and the academy is very fond of musicals so they won't overlook the fact that EP is not a good "musical" , it's music is messy, not catchy and doesn't hold any emotional weight (except probably the one where Emilia and epifania sing, but nobody seems to care about that ...and el mal would've worked way better if THAT scene was the heart of the movie ...but it isn't , it's just a plot device poorly utilised and which is the main critisism of the movie too that drug cartel related stuff was brushed over) but people predicting TWO songs to get nominated and potentially WIN is so shocking to me ...because those are not that good, but ig academy might even do as they are predicting.

I guess it’s not showing up on Perri’s algorithm but I’ve been seeing Denis Villeneuve campaigning like crazy for Dune 2. Every other UA-cam video suggestion I get is him doing press for it!
It's driving me absolutely crazy how the single best animated film of 2024 (and has the 4.3/5 letterboxd score to back it up) is completely being ignored as if it doesn't even exist. Look Back. It's on Amazon Prime Video, is only 57 minutes long. And is a beautiful and heartfelt story about what it means to be a successful artist. My god that film deserves better. It deserves to be an Oscar nominee.
My son loved Transformers One and it surprised me as one of the best animated films I've seen this year. I would definitely put it ahead of Wallace and Gromit.

I finally watched the substance last night (Dec 28th) so much potential and the whole concept of the film was a great idea but god the film absolutely falls flat on its monster face by the climax comes. I’m all for greater meaning or some bigger message but I have to believe it or believable. As the end credits rolled I thought it’s simply too much for me and I couldn’t take to whatsoever and I don’t know how anyone can think the third act was even ok. Overall I don’t know what I’m missing here because I’ve noticed you all like this film but it’s just not good by the end of the run time. I DISLIKED Emilia Perez. As a Latino it felt like someone took a script, used Google translate and made it Spanish. The accents also took me out of it. Selena Gomez I couldn't understand anything she was saying and as much as I love Zoe, even her accent was weird. It felt like the film was made by someone who isn't Latino with what they think Latino culture is like
EMILIA PÉREZ LITERALLY HAS KARLA SOFÍA DOING BROWN FACE AT ITS CENTER, YOU WOULDNT BE TALKING THAT GOOD FOR A MOVIE THAT WOULD HAVE SOMEONE DOING BLACK FACE, and that is just *1* of the things that is wrong with the movie, there is a reason México is the last place where is going to premiere
I hope you’re right. The other films are great too and worthy winners but I don’t understand why it’s not resonating with people. It’s in my top 5 of the year so far
Doubtful. I think it's better than the first one, but it's not as good Flow (incredibly creative) or the Wild Robot (best animated movie in a long, long time)
ACU-- not the best script..imo . Conclave , SING SING,Wicked, Emelia Perez NIckel Boys on a whole other level.. Yes, Sean Baker for Anora. Interesting -no one I know likes A Real Pain.
What the heck is so original about The Substance screenplay? Coralie Fargeat basically stole themes from The Fly, The Nutty Professor and The Picture of Dorian Gray. There's absolutely nothing organic about that storyline!
I disagree totally with Jeff about Dune 2. The changes they made to the original book were awful. It was so disappointing after Dune Part 1 which was superb.
Yes and no. Academy members aren't existing within a vacuum. Like Perri often says these are human beings who exist within the same world we do and hear the same praise and critics we do. It's not like it's just online backlash. When you have famous Mexican actors deriding what the film was attempting to do in very public ways like Eugenio Derbez did and as others are slowly starting to do, Academy members are going to hear this too. Many Academy members don't like wading into issues they don't understand and if you read some of the unnamed ballots that go around every year you'd see this. I would not be surprised if many older voters who might be lukewarm on the film to begin with decide to vote for something else to avoid surrounding the overall ceremony in backlash they don't fully understand.
My dream picks in the Best Animate Feature category are as follows. Chicken for Linda, Watchmen, The Concierge, Ultraman: Rising, The Glassworker, Lesbian Space Princess, Maya, Give Me a Title and Savages.
Truly appreciate the insights and dynamic of this trio! Thanks for being my award season gurus

It felt like the film was made by someone who isn't Latino with what they think Latino culture is like

Flow
The Wild Robot
Memoir Of A Snail
Inside Out 2

EMILIA PÉREZ LITERALLY HAS KARLA SOFÍA DOING BROWN FACE AT ITS CENTER, YOU WOULDNT BE TALKING THAT GOOD FOR A MOVIE THAT WOULD HAVE SOMEONE DOING BLACK FACE, and that is just *1* of the things that is wrong with the movie, there is a reason México is the last place where is going to premiere
Malcom needs to go a diet!
Did you say as your dog paree
Then everything everyone wants to come on March I don't know what you're talking about with dune
Transmoers 1 😂😂😂❤
I think Inside Out 2 will win the Best Animated Feature.
I hope you’re right. The other films are great too and worthy winners but I don’t understand why it’s not resonating with people. It’s in my top 5 of the year so far
Doubtful. I think it's better than the first one, but it's not as good Flow (incredibly creative) or the Wild Robot (best animated movie in a long, long time)
Jeff is spot on Saturday night’s screenplay. Wasn’t thin at all.
The original screenplay:
1. Anora
2. The brutalist
3. The substance
4. A real pain
5. All we imagine as light
ACU-- not the best script..imo . Conclave , SING SING,Wicked, Emelia Perez NIckel Boys on a whole other level.. Yes, Sean Baker for Anora. Interesting -no one I know likes A Real Pain.
Hey guys does anyone know why the Gold Derby app still sucks?
Awards Expert infiltration?
What the heck is so original about The Substance screenplay? Coralie Fargeat basically stole themes from The Fly, The Nutty Professor and The Picture of Dorian Gray. There's absolutely nothing organic about that storyline!
The awards expert app>>>> Gold derby
I disagree totally with Jeff about Dune 2. The changes they made to the original book were awful. It was so disappointing after Dune Part 1 which was superb.
Online comments, even from FYI fans, has absolutely nothing to do with how Academy members vote!
Yeah majority of it is probably bots anyway. I'm skeptical of any super-vitriolic comments online especially when a bunch show up at once.
What an awful take
Agree with Jeff on so much. Dune Part 2, Substance, and especially about Saturday Night. I don’t understand why Perri dislikes that movie so much.
Rooting hard for Inside Out 2 personally
Why did Perri just call herself an old ass?
omg lmao
My dream picks in the Best Animate Feature category are as follows. Chicken for Linda, Watchmen, The Concierge, Ultraman: Rising, The Glassworker, Lesbian Space Princess, Maya, Give Me a Title and Savages.
Hell I could tell from the trailer Sept 5 would get a best screenplay nom.
FLOW is going to win for animated feature.
