My Barnes and noble makes you walk THROUGH the adult romance section to get to the YA books. And of course there's always a table of TikTok romances in the middle. It's just so gross

The author was hyping up the intelligence of both of those characters just to have them being argumentative rule followers for the second half of the book bc a rich genius hacker and a clever trauma nurse couldn’t figure out how to solve that *problem* all on their own ????? Huh?????

I DNF'd The Stars Are Dying at like 33% That book made me feel like I was having a stroke. I kept rereading sections because I was certain I'd missed something. When one of the early important characters died and not only could I not tell how they were hit (based on the descriptions in the text of the room and placement of people) but I couldn't actually have cared less, I threw in the towel.

Court of the Vampire queen, I dnfed so hard. It was just sex scenes (which fine what ever). but it got to the point where the fmc would like finish up with one guy, walk into a different room and go to town on the next guy. And like barely any plot to speak of lol. Got so annoyed and done with it and dnfed.

I read icebreaker because a friend wanted me to, and man was it awful. Even if it was (correctly) labeled as erotica, it still would be bad. I also listened to Amityville Horror, which was a huge mistake, because the book and the narrator were so boring it became white noise.

My worst read of the year was City of Gods & Monsters. It was so bad. I dnf’d at 12% and for some reason I was so nice and generous in my good reads review and in retrospect I shouldn’t have been. The Mmc is BORING and the FMC was unfortunately insufferable. The chosen one who doesn’t know she’s special. Blah blah blah. It was also pretty much a carbon copy of Crescent City (I didn’t know of the sjm controversy when I read that a few years ago) but it felt very close to plagiarism.
My quickest dnf was Long Live Evil. The bookseller at barns and noble told me it was their best friends favorite book so I got it… one chapter in and a) I was so confused I thought had to have accidentally skipped a few pages or something b) IT WAS INSUFFERABLE and so boring

I looove this hater content. Especially upset by the non-fic ones. My worst read of last year was The Guest by Emma Cline. It was so bad. Just about a white woman floating around being terrible. She also sexually assaults a child and it's not commented on AT ALL. So many people loved it but it was shallow and problematic at absolute best. Thank you for reading these things so we don't have to

Shoujo manga where girl protags do anything for a boy who doesn't give a frig about her or is even mean to her is so common, and it makes me sad.
Like, I understand the attraction to a certain level of stoicism in boys/men, but if they're straight up uninterested and mean, I need to be in a masochistic mood to read that😅
I dropped an otome phone game when I chose the mean one and he had no redeeming qualities lol. At least have other qualities besides being mean🙏🏼

I didn’t think I had a worst read of the year but then I remembered I read the boneyard kings by Becca Steele & c. Lymari had Mateo the only Latinx character call the main girl who is 18 maybe mammas the whole series and of course he had all the connection with the bad men💀. Burn with me by Lucy smoke was just terrible like I don’t think the fmc actually had any brain cells because that man did not love her ever. Also the dubious consent was just SA but she totally wanted it💀. Master of death by Olivie Blake , why so many prose for a vampire romance. Any Melanie Harlow book I read 💀. Why are they all 30 year old children.

i think my least favourite book of the year might actually have been sleeping giants, which im incredibly disappointed about. i haaaaated that book. the only reason i didnt dnf it was because those 320 pages went super fast-- which isnt surprising, considering the format of it. i think the interview style just didnt work super well for me, and i found the characters really flat (but im also super picky about my characters and how fleshed out they are, and i find a lot of characters in a lot of books flat, tbh). i was also just.... bored? bored. nothing that happened was surprising to me, i have Thoughts that arent fully formed abt how the book handled disability and depression, etc. i am also.... frankly unsure how i feel about the concept that earth was once looked over by aliens, and that all our gods (or at least some of them??) are based off these giant robots that the aliens used to use. on one hand, it's a fun concept that could be interesting to play with. on the other, it inches too close to "aliens built the pyramids" for my comfort, and im not sure i trust the author not to make it weird when we get more information in later books. it was just a little danger flag in my brain.
i really wanted to like it, because some parts of it reminded me a lot of ghibli's castle in the sky. but the further we got into the story the more frustrated i found myself, especially with the chosen format, and i dont think im going to continue on with the series. part of me wishes i'd just dnfed it instead of dragging myself through.

I had three books that i hated this year and for some reason i finnished all of them.
Lakelore i was really excited about but it was so boring and it didnt do anything especially cool with the titular lake. The entire book was the two mains going to each other and to us in their heads 'im struggling so so so much with adhd/dyslexia'. Back and forth. We heard you the first 80 times. All the characters act bad the same way or good the same way except for the mains. If this is on your tbr list the lake is supposed to be a very poor metaphor for their minds or whatever. I mean the magic is real but like nothing happens with it. Theres quiet fantasy and then theres this.
Bored gay werewolf sounds right up my alley. Im a frequently bored gay who really likes werewolves. Its so bad. Its suposed to be about the alt right pipeline and like podcast dudebros. I wasnt enjoying this book but wanted to see what the author had to say about this which is not much. Very one dimensional. Nothing really happens for most of the book. Also i love a protagonist who is a bad perspn or morally gray but they still have to be likeable. This guy was just miserable and mean to absolutely everyone and not even in like a fun or interesting way. Even before the pipeline plot starts.
Prince of Fortune is a color blind white savior narrative. At the beginning of the book is a glossery of all of these different characters in the leads country. I dont think any on the other country have names. Theres like 3 or 4 who have titles and thats it and theyre all evil. Also theres this whole thing where a revered queen had destroyed knowledge of the other nations language, magic system, and magic source and i thought the book would be like 'and that was bad'. Nope. Explicitly a good thing apparently. Then the war is over and they really want the main character to be their king. General poor writing throughout but the worst pacing ive ever seen in a book. After the climax the book keeps going for so long. I dont know how many physical pages but it was over 100 pages on my ereader. All over 'will the prime Minister let the leads marry?' of course he is bc this is a book also they way the citizens react to this will they wont they is very and 'everyone clapped'. More time was spent on this than the nations combining by FAR.

I feel a book about men's modern struggles would be intresting if it discussed the gender binary and how 'manhood' has always been defined in some way according to 'womanhood'. Thusly, now that the binary is being rightfully broken down men cannot define themselves according to the women in their lives. Look at the intelligence. Their very existence is founded upon how other people(women) view them. But for women, we have been fighting to be viewed as more than just mothers and daughters and wives.
