Will it work on cars? PicoScope 2204A Automotive Oscilloscope review - The PicoScope 2204A might just be a great alternative cheap automotive oscilloscope. In this video we review the Pico 2204A scope and test whether the PicosScope 2204A is suitable for automotive oscilloscope diagnostics. Compared to the PicoScope Automotive kit which starts at £600 for a basic kit and £1500 for a standard kit, the PicoScope 2204A can be bought for as little as £120 (link below)! Hantek also make a competitor for an automotive oscilloscope, the Hantek 6022be.
In this video we perform some typical automotive oscilloscope diagnostics using the PicoScope 2204A and put it to the ultimate test of checking the CAB Bus fault diagnostics.
Note: the maximum input voltage for the PicoScope 2204A is 20 volts. If you want to measure modern direct injection petrol or diesel injectors, you will need a 20:1 attenuator; this reduces the input voltage by a factor of 20 (link below!)

Thank you. I just ordered one, along with an Xtool Anyscan 30. I already downloaded Pico Scope 7, so I'm going to be using these for practice only. Currently I'm a Marine electrician who also worked as a Nuclear instrumentation technician (Nuclear electronic (technician), copy machine technician and EV technician on transit buses therefore, I sincerely believe I can transfer my experience to the automotive field since I'm fascinated with the current technology involved therein.
Amazing! Sounds like you have a lot of interesting disciplines. You should check out our training offer on our website. We cover every detail of Pico to get the most out of any of their products. Plus a diagnostics course included 👍
Darren, Thank you for this and all of your other videos. You do an excellent job of making some rather intimidating subject matter easily understandable. It was this particular video that convinced me to purchase a 2205A. I had been TRYING to use a Hantek 2D82Auto handheld. It was far too fussy and getting the settings right was a real pain. The Pico software is a breeze and I was able to put it to good use to identify failed and failing injectors on my 1990 Cadillac DeVille. I also used it to find a failed coil and fix the misfire on my 2006 Ford F150, which took about 10 minutes from boot-up to problem identified. The Pico is an excellent piece of kit and I wouldn't dream of not using it now. Cheers!
Great to hear you putting the little Pico to great use! Thanks for the message 👍
Wow beautiful and what a knowledge, it is a pity that I am no longer electrically up to date with my time and nowadays people simply connect the car to a device to read the most defects.

thank you for opening my eye to this cheaper product !
It’s a great starting point, and quite capable. If you then decide to upgrade, you’ll appreciate where you’re spending your money
You just answered my questions. Seen this scope and same leads on Amazon for basically the same price as little pocket sized scopes. I think it will be good enough for cam crank signals etc
Ah for sure, I have videos on here using it on cam crank for BMW timing chain. Can even see the slack with engine running!
The scopes that come with compensating screws on the leads can you use regularbnc leads? I see cheap scopes on Amazon they have them little tiny leads but wondering if I use regular leads will it effect resolution
@@philh9238 they’ll be fine
Very interesting video, I already own a snap on vantage pro which has a two channel scope but to be honest I haven’t got a clue how to use it. The vantage pro also needs a new battery which is about £150 I believe .
I think with the help of your videos and the pico website I may purchase the 2204a as it seems more user friendly to me.
Thanks for the video, I am now subscribed, also where did you get your foam mat from it looks very durable.
Kind regards, Chris.
Great choice, the 2204A is a great starting point and the Pico 6 software has so many features! Re. The foam mat, not sure, my Grandad gave it to me when he retired! I have seen similar kneeling mats in the workshop and all quite similar. Great to have you on the channel!
Great video many thanks. I have seen your blog as well, good luck and will definitely follow your blog and channel.
Glad you’re enjoying the channel! Thanks 👍
How to get PiscoScope 2204A to work with Pico Automotive software!! ua-cam.com/video/BvMH-SLl--0/v-deo.html
@Karsyn Alexzander instablaster ;)
@Milo James it worked and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my ass!
@Karsyn Alexzander happy to help :)
Hello, how does any PicoScope record the measured signals? Is it screenshot recording or continuous recording like Texvik, Autoscope does?
@@mareklaube2380 Buffer memory 👍
Picoscope have two modes of operation. One mode is real-time mode and then it uses internal memory. Other is streaming mode. In that mode it he keeps sending data to the PC, and uses PC memory up to 100MB . In that mode it do not use internal memory. When it is set to 200ms/div or above it is working in streaming mode.
Love your videos...Im having a hard time setting my aes wave 600 amp clamp for relative compression...using 2204a pico 7 does not have a preset for that clamp..any tips for a good capture?
Thanks! You should be able to just use a low voltage setting. Depending on the engine, it could be clipping the first part of the waveform (eg diesels can hit 800+ at the start). If you can get the scales from AES you can create a custom probe 👍
What exactly would i need to test a Stetson Bravo 70A battery charger/supply for clean power. I need to determine is this would be ok to use for auto programming. I have the 2204A in my amazon cart but what else in your list do i need to test this supply device? Thanks
@@mjk9674 I’d say a Hantek 600A amp probe 👍 Maybe also an attenuator if you plan to go over 20V. And the Hantek automotive Oscilloscope leads
How does it compare to the hantek 1008c? I can measure injectors coils can bus pwm intake/exhaust pulse RC and more with my hantek. Can also withstand 400v spikes. Just wondering because they are pretty similar in price. The pico software does look way better. I’m pretty new to scopes and do want to upgrade soon but I have to say I don’t see the great value in the 2204 at this point. Although I don’t think the hantek is even close to 25MHz.
Some nice content on the channel M8. I will be watching. The 2204A...for the money, difficult to find better! Cheers
TheGibby3340 Thanks! Yeah, it will easily cover 90% of your oscilloscope needs, Pico software is great too!

Can you do a test?
We have the videos on here. Yes 👍
Wondering to buy 2204A, but see there is not a big (price) gap to 2205A? Will it make sense to buy 2205A?
hi darren im having real trouble with my 4425a bnc+ scope i purchased the COP attempted to use it and the scope just stopped responding and red light has come on the scope. and feel like chucking it in the bin at the moment , i also cant login to my mechanic minset for some reason , ive tried the pass code and no joy , any advice with what to do with the unresponsive scope would be great because ive lost my love for it now and dont no if its worth me owning it as it has not helped me in the slighest and just stressed me out now , thanks
I am guess this would work for alternators ripple test ?
Will need to adjust a few settings to get a smooth curve. But yes 👍
I am looking to buy a scope because I have a problem with my car the local shops (yes, plural) can't find. I want a proper diagnosis, not let someone just fire the parts cannon. Anyway, I was wondering if you still have access to the known good waveforms. Not being a professional diagnostician (well, not in the automotive industry anyway, my background is in electronics) I do not always know what a good waveform looks like. I found Pico has a database but is it accessible if the software detects a non-automotive Pico scope? What about the timing thingies in degrees of rotation rather than milliseconds?
Hi, that’s great! You can’t access waveform library with 2204A. But there are some helpful share groups on Facebook. Yes, you can get the rotational rulers for degrees 👍
Vimu MSO21 could be better than PicoScope 2204A:
Vimu MSO21 12 bit , 10MS/s in streaming mode
PicoScope 2204A 8 bit, 1MS/s in streaming mode
Price is almost the same
Can anyone please chime in opinion? I'm new to oscilloscopes and only do diy hobby/work on family or friends cars and looking t get into scopes now that i feel conferrable with multimeter/test lights and how to do the basics and feel its time to learn to use scopes especially for things like sensor signals and things the meter/testlight are just not the right tool
i have it narrowed to two or 3 scopes all hantek.first is hantek 1008c for laptop, the second and third are the hantek handheld oscillioscopes (2c42/2d72)
as being new and for diy what would be recommended i purchase?Thank you for any help
How did you get on? I always recommend the PicoScope 2204a. I can't remember if we spoke about this already...
Can you hook up the pico with a tablet 🤔
F P Good question. I had a quick look and it seems yes, if it is windows based. There is a thread in the Pico forum on this 👍
Awesome !
thank you man
Hi, can this do recordings of several hours? Like when I'm watching current draw on a vehicle and measuring the voltage drop across a resistor.
Hi, yes, you can record for many hours. PicoScope allows up to 5000 seconds per division, which is around 833 hours for one screen! You can also set an alarm if a value is breached.
@@MechanicMindset Thank you :)
Suitable for car can bus ?? 2 channels ??
Yep, check my other videos 👍
Could you tell me if the picoscope 2205A works with the picoscope automotive 6 thanks.. ??
Hi, no it doesn’t, but you don’t need the automotive version; I am using the normal version in this video 👍
Hi bro I have a BMW 520d 2014 plate I believe my engine is making a lot of noise.
I want know how much u change the timing bell
Hi, it depends on the garage and where you live. I would expect a quote around £1500, maybe more if you are in London
@@MechanicMindset Thank you for answering my message I live in London UK
Is it possible to analysis secondary ignition waveform ? and current waveform by hantek cc-65 a clamp and cc-650 a clamp
?
Yes it is. For secondary there are a few methods, check out my videos where I use a coin. There are some other settings to change for using the ignition cable clamp. You can also see my other videos where I use the Hantek clamps too 👍
@@MechanicMindset I am prepared for buying a pico 2204a. already have a hantek 1008c. but hantek application program...is have few function than pico 2204a.
i wanna waste spark secondary ignition waveform.
@@Boat_FishingDoduJeju Yes it will work for wasted spark. Pico is much better software and hardware than Hantek
Are you able to log in and get all the pico Wave form patterns If you buy one list none automotive Pico scopes
No, you need to buy and Automotive PicoScope. You need to use T&M software with this tool, from picotech.com 👍 it’s good
I see you tested the can bus with this, are you able to slow it anymore than you did or is that the limit of the none automotive version? Thinking of ordering one, so just wondering.
Igual estoy interesado en saber que tan limitado está para medir el can bus del automóvil?
Is this scope suitable for flexray
I’ve not tried it yet but I’m hopeful. You will definitely need x10 probes. A lot of diag can be had with an ohm meter in FlexRay.
I hope to do this test soon 👍
Is there a way to hook this up to a iPad?
Sorry, don’t think so
Hi. I am a begginer. I would like to buy an oscilloscope for my car, to make experiments and learn more. Can you recomend me a scope? It is good nough PicoScope 2204A? Or should i buy another one? Can I find one better for a little bit more money? What do you think? I'm thinking to buy a Thinkdiag too, for 100 euros.
The 2204a is a great scope to start. If you then decide to get even more serious, you can get the 4425a and you will already have learnt the software. Check out more videos I have with the 2204a 👍
@@MechanicMindset I saw a few videos from you. They are great. Thank you.
So you say, that 2204a is enough. The 2205a or 2206b are more expensive. Do they have any big advantages over 2204a?
@@arctican7483 If you want to spend a bit more, get the 2405A. 4 channels and more sample rate. I think it’s worth it 👍
@@MechanicMindset Awesome. Thank you and happy new year.
How are you connecting the Han tech leads to the picoscope
Hi, they are BNC connectors. Push and twist
So the leads from hantech have a bnc one end and the normal ends you would get on a multimeter

Can this record samples?
Can you clarify what you mean?
You can record and save the waveforms, and it saves multiple pages.
You can also save the file as an excel spread sheet with all the samples saved as data numbers 👍
Hi there, thanks for the great tips. Decided to go with pico in the end. Now the last "battle" the 2205a would worth the extra payment, on daily operations and graphic interpretations? it's almost twice the price of 2204a. What would be your personal opinion? Thank you
I think go for the 2204A, save your money for the 4425A automotive scope.
Or get the 2405A 👍
@@MechanicMindset yeah 4425 would be at some point if i will catch the taste for oscilloscopes. The only thing about the 2204a being the 8 bit resolution compared to 16 bit of 2205a? Or i mistake specs? Couldn't find any info regarding how much this will dissadvantage reading graphs
@@motorax.service.motociclete 2205A is 8bit too. 4425A 12bit. Basically the curves will look like a staircase compared to a 12bit scope. You’ll see what I mean on the examples I show on the channel
@@MechanicMindset thank you for replies. I confused the resolution with buffer. 2204 has 8ks while 2205 has 16ks. I guess will not worth the difference since you also recommend 2204 and seen on multiple car diag channels. I could use a more pergormant one on my car audio hobby too, but will wait for the dedicated automotive to make sense 👍
Hello, I just purchase hantek 1008c but after watchibg your vids using pico 2204a iam considering selling it and purchase pico, do you thing pico will be enough for every application and I should sell hantek?
Hi! I haven’t used the 1008C but understand it has some limitations like the sample rate is quite low. Also the Hantek software isn’t great. But you can get HScope on any android device really cheap. The Pico is much more capable than the Hantek (my opinion) if you are happy that 2 channels is enough 👍

Hi, so is this Picoscope better than the Hantek oscilloscopes? Also by removing the OEM dll, would the Hantek work with the pico automotive software?
Simon Moore Hi, personally I prefer this PicoScope to Hantek; I do have the 6022BE by Hantek and this is better. No, only Pico products work with the Pico software. Thanks for watching!

Simon Moore Awsome! Great brands. ADT - Audi Diag Tech?
Hi, I really like the look of the pico, I work at a hgv dealership and I'd like a scope for checking out various canbus signals and sensors ect, after watching your video and seeing that the input voltage of the picoscope is only 20v and hgvs when running can go up to 28volts, dose this mean this scope would be no use to me or would I have to use a attenuator, for testing for power or incase of a can short to battery positive? Many thanks 😊
Hi! Great question, yes you should be able to take all your measurements with an attenuator 👍
@Mechanic Mindset brilliant! Is this something you could replicate or make a video on? I haven't seen anyone make a video on diagnosing a 24volt system with the p2204. It would be great for a quick reference to see how to set it up with attenuators. 😀
@@michaelroyan384 I have some videos using the attenuator and how to set it up. Check out the CAN Diagnostic channel, I know he has the 2204A and also works on trucks, he might have a video 👍
Yes PICO is Great and works.... you can add the Auto probes and import settings from the Automotive one brilliant ! as to ANYTHING HANTEK SCOPE wise after experiencing the Hantek 1008C or "Hantoy" I refer to it as is only good for a door stop when it is effected by High voltage noise in the work area - so basically totally USELESS when it comes to Automotive DIS Secondary ignition work - it locks up, reboots even crashes the attached PC. The attached HT-25 ignition lead actually works with real scopes like a PICO.
Dam CCP China and their 'pretend' time wasting non functional products. Save up and buy proper western brand ones that actually DO work !
Haha, I much prefer the 2204A for a budget scope. Some people seem to get on ok with Hantek products. I have the 622be, which is ok for the price point (get what you pay for) The specs on the 1008 don't look great and I hear that loading up the 8 channels really affects the performance! I do have the HT-25, I should do a video! Cheers
@@MechanicMindsetI have since sort of put the Hantek back on life support after finding the supplied budget non USB standard cable with no earth connector shielding was acting like some crazed antenna... also added mui metal to the inside of the plastic case and shield the optional output terminal block with a grounded cover .... That leaves only the interesting Hantek software to cope with and some temperature drift over time. I think the problems with Hantek is they don't use their products after the initial designs first build unlike most western companies who go back & modify till they perfect it for use. Take the CC65 Hantek clamp... zero button gets stuck, the cable at exit can get strained broken. The CC650 they fixed the zero button in similar case design. Honestly face palm moments with Hantek making the same flawed products year in year out... why change??? Look forward to your clamp video.
@@ausmartin1 Haha! Good to hear. There are some other options for software. Have you heard of HScope (Android only), they have an automotive plug in too! Also open Hantek and a few other PC based options. Although, I’ve not used any of them yet! 👍

Awesome video.i stubbled across your video while working on a canbus issue today at work. I got the truck fix fixed. We don't have a scope and I keep asking for one .... I was looking at this scope couple of months ago to purchase it myself.i asked this pico dealer in my area about this scope and he said you can't use it for automotive ...... You need the" Grand master deluxe 10000 automotive kit "for 3,000 Candian dollars ... And left it there. I went down the Google rabbit hole about this scope for automotive with no luck so I give up. Until I found this video and I purchased everything in the link. came out for $300 Canadian. Can't wait to use this and learn, so I am not just a brake and ball joint Mechanic. Awesome content keep up the good work . 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
This is music to my ears! The 2204A does have some limits (which I try to highlight where I can), but absolutely amazing scope for the money and a great starting point!
Once you get used the to the 2204A and learn the ways of the scope, you will learn the areas it is weaker. You can then make the decision if you want to upgrade or make do with the 2204A. That way you will understand why you are paying more money for the higher spec kit (it is good). I will do a video on my opinion about the 2 soon. Stay tuned for more! Thanks 👍
Hey man, Wish you luck. I've got a question for you, assuming you have bought the pico 2204a, I'd like to know your thoughts about it as a mechanic. I'm currently looking to buy a scope for automotive use but am a bit lost and not sure if i should get the 2204a or a liitle more expensive picoscope.
Thanks in advance, any feedback is appreciated :)
@@martinsubally899 honestly speaking as a licensed tech who works on every thing from car to HD trucks. That little pico scope is pretty good, it has it limits and I like to use it with the hacked automotive software because it sets it up for you for whatever your testing. It just a tool at the end of day and makes you different from all the gravy techs just doing brakes and ball joints. But I mostly use it for can bus errors. I am the only tech I know that uses a scope lol. If you have a laptop already its not to bad to get all the stuff. I still use the dlc breakout box and a power probe and mulit meter everyday as my bread and butter. For the money this scope is a good start with out spending a arm and leg and a step making you a better technician. Good luck hope this helped
Hi ! Why is 2204A not good for injectors ?
What do I need in order to see spark plug waveforms? I don't see any 100kV scopes out there...
Operator 801 Hi, you can get a secondary ignition probe. I have one listed under accessories in my Kit link. It has an attenuator built in

Hello good video 🫡
Can this work for secondary circuit probe also from pico as well as the cylinder pressure transducer? or de we need a better scope for those? o see the transducer available in the pico 7 software even with this cheaper scope but i don't see stuff like the secondary circuit probe
You can add any custom probes yourself 👍
Love your videos, learning lots as a newbie to this.
Really helpful video, what do you think of the micsig ato1104 4 channel automotive scope? I'm not sure if I should go with that or the basic Picoscope setup in this video. I would love to have a a 4 channel Pico but the cost is a big factor, I do also like the idea of having a stand alone scope without the need of a laptop
I’ve not used the micsig but I know Mario’s Diagnostics is a fan. I personally like the Pico as the software is so powerful 👍 And if you decide to upgrade you don’t have to learn a new software (they the same) Cheers!
I was wondering if you could tell me what you think of the hantek 2d82 auto or should i go w the pico 200. I just don’t like the idea of buying a laptop to use it. Thanks n love your vids, keep em coming. Lopez
Jose Maria Lopez I haven’t used it before. Just had a quick look and it seems to be a convenient tool. Personally I would prefer the Pico, the software definitely has more features and you can save known good waveforms for reference etc. It depends what you are using it for too (ie pro or DIY). There are cheaper hand heads that people use if you wanted to ‘dip your toe in’ to scoping, but for me the Pico wins. Glad you’re enjoying the channel, lots more to come!
Any other little better than pico 2204 you can suggest? 4 chanels
They do a 4channel 2204A: the 2405. If you want smooth 12bit, the Ditex is pretty good. MicSig is also nice scope. I have videos for both of these (see ThinkTool scope to see what the MicSig looks like)
You can hack the Pico auto S.W to work with this .. You have to delete the OEM.DLL file from the Pico automotive software folder on your hard drive .
Ah ok! Will give it a try, cheers!
it does not work any more, i delete it and it still can't detect my 2204a scope
@@suvalkas24 I know it did for a long while . But everyone was all in the Pico Facebook groups blabbing about it so Pico probably fixed it . I seen Videos on doing it and personally know people that it worked for . Pico probably just got wind of it and fixed it .

Glad you enjoyed the video! That is quite a specific fault, not sure there are many in the road round here anymore. What exactly is the issue? Cheers 👍

Very nice Video as usual Darren, and Very nice Picopiece of kit also, I still have m old ADC200, Hope I can get one soon. Thanks Again.
do you know if this pico has separate grounds?
I heard that AC curent can kill the PCM
for example if you measure cam and crank signal on the same ground
This unit has common grounds (not floating). Main issues I see are when an injector is measured with something else. Depending on how you connect the scope, the other ground will cause the injector to stay open and cause a misfire. Or you could cause a short on the supply.
@@MechanicMindset you say will not be a problem measuring crank inductiv sensor and cam hall sensor in the same time?
@@alinduta5398 No, just connect both negative leads to ground 👍
Fun fact: The original PicoScope automotive unit also had common grounds!

Hello is it also possible to use the fnirsi dso-tc3 to test a crankshaft sensor?
Hi bro. Do you recommend 2406?
Hi, yes that would be a good choice for a cheap 4 channel scope 👍
@@MechanicMindset thanks bro. Send me WhatsApp please.
Hantek probe is single bnc to dual banana, how do you connect to pico? Using only one channel?
Hi Husain, the Hantek Auto probe is very similar to the Pico Auto probe. The BNC end has a ground (the metal casing of the BNC connector) and 'positive' conection (the pin in the middle of the BNC). The Red banana connects to the middle pin, the black banana connects to the ground. This is the standard for most scopes like this.
@@MechanicMindset Ok got it, for can bus diagnosis you use only one channel either A or B, correct?
Husain Amin Both, check this out! ua-cam.com/video/f2uPhKd-ETI/v-deo.html
@@MechanicMindset Hmm, on that vid you were using two leads, each lead have two red and black bananas, you used only reds and ground, I dont understand how to connect hantek to pico.
I watched your vid again, you connects Both black to ground, reds to CAN bus high/low, correct?
Can the 2204a and 2205a be used with pico 7? I see mixed answers but on picos site it shows pico 7 as the recommended software. If i need to purchade a different score to use pico 7 then i will but right now im looking at a 2205a. I want to be able to use pico 7 tho. Any help would be appreciated thanks
Yes for Pico 7, but no for the Automotive version. You need to get from picotech.com 👍
Have you tried using the hantec scope with pico software on laptop?
Not possible as far as I’m
Aware 👍 Just get the 2204a 😁
Can it do AC coupling measuring AC-ripple on the alternator? If it can. Please show in a video.
Hi, yes it can. AC coupling is straight forward. You can also add a band pass filter in math channels to clean up the signal a bit
@@MechanicMindset might be the device im looking for.. can you please show in a video doing AC-ripple on an alternator on a car?
I have seen other mini DSO's with AC-filters do something similiar. DSO213 have 100MS/s and 15Mhz bandwidth.. nice to have on a handheld scope.. buts lacking the PC connectivity. Really nice to have that software to fiddle with. And record the waveforms and review them.
@@orfeous I can make a video but I’m afraid it won’t be soon. Sorry!
You can download the automotive software and use demo mode to play with it. No alternator signal but you can still use the features you are interested in 👍
@@MechanicMindset it's ok.. what specifications on a oscilloscope do you need for ac-ripple or/and alternator/battery diagnostics? No need for canbus or that kind of stuff
