Late comment this time.
The Hantek 1008 is a decent scope for automotive work. If you can stand it's windows features. Crank signals tend to have sloped sides rather than nice square sides. If you're using Hscope for better functionality...you won't be able to do cam crank comparisons, there just isn't enough resolution at 2KSa/s(hscopes limit on the 1008).
Hantek 6022 or 6074 scopes you won't have any issues using the windows software or Hscope. It's still not the same clarity as the mp408 or the pico units. But it is perfectly functional.
The pico 2 channel scopes are....limiting on what tests you can do when you start advancing more. And the price tag...yup.
Hantek CC65 - $89.99
Hantek CC650 - $119.99
Another great video. Thanks man.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you, I've been wanting to get into waveform automotive testing but was held back not knowing where to start. You have helped tremendously
Great to hear!
Nice video, I'd add a pressure transducer to that kit, I've bought one from amphenol ssi, it has a very wide measurement range, 500psi to about 30inches of vacuum. I've Made the power supply and introduced the pressure vs voltage values myself, all together it cost me less than 100$ and the waveforms are very nice and clear. I'm using a 2205a but still it gives a beautiful pattern.
Awesome! Yes great piece of equipment. I’ll have to look in to making one too 👍 cheers
Just doing your free taster training before pulling the trigger and enrolling. So far they are excellent. I’m an ex tech, so don’t get to practice professionally any more (still in technical automotive though!) These videos are invaluable for me. Thanks
Great to hear! What’s keeping you busy now? Any questions let me know 👍 Cheers!
Great advice to get started without breaking the bank 👍👍
Does the job! 👍
Happy I found your channel. Thx for your content.
I have the 2204A as well and love it. Especially once I got it working with the Automotive version of the software.
I'd sure like to know how you managed to get that done
@@nicholasmurray9725 by modifying the Picoscope Automotive exe file and dll file that checks if you using an "approved" Picoscope model for the automotive software. I was able to make it think your always using an approved model no matter what actual Picoscope model is connected.
@@bluegizmo1983 That's above my pay grade lol
Is it a complicated thing to do or do I need to be advanced in computers?
It was simple bypass, last I used mine it had been patched though
Thank you, well done and you are easy to listen to! Inspirational also. PN's and brand names are very helpful. Thanks again.
i use those 3 meter probes, they work great
Pico makes great stuff! Some is a bit pricey, but you can count on it to work when you need it... 👍
For sure! What are you using?
@@MechanicMindset Just the 2205a, and probe set with back probes and an amp clamp, paddle and some other stuff from micsig... I'm in the process of making some pulse probes and pressure probes too.
@@KingLoopie1 Hi!
I am thinking about buying one,
2204 vs 2205 Which one do you recomend ?
Thanks.
@@luismelero6198 The 2205a is more expensive, but is a 25 MHz scope. Otherwise, they are the same. I originally went with the 2205a because of 25 MHz for HF amateur radio and electronic hobby stuff in addition to automotive. For automotive, either scope will do for most things. I did end up upgrading to the micsig ato1104 for autos because of the extra 2 channels. But there's a 4-5x increase in price for that one. $1k+... I still like and use the 2205a often though cause of the ease of use on picoscope software.

Thanks, I just signed up. Trying to find the Waveform Library - is it still available?
@@OilBaron100 Great! Yes, look for the course called UA-cam Waveform Library - it has the videos, files and images of the waveform too 👍
@@MechanicMindset thanks. I created a free account. I've watched a couple of videos and they're really good. I liked the video on the BMW N47 engine showing the camshaft-timing variation on a noisy timing chain.
Not sure if you have a known good waveform for an M62 engine but if not, I'll keep looking online and look at doing your paid courses in the future once I've learned all of the great free content.

@@OilBaron100 Ah great! No sorry I don’t have that.
Thank you! I quite often forget to turn off Hante clamps and battery is drained...😀
It’s a part of life, we just have to accept 😆
Great information shared in the video. Thanks so much
Nice content going to buy the basic scope just to play and become familiar w/ its capabilities.
I'm waiting to buy the Rotkee oscilloscope I think it's the best option, you forgot to say that the 2204a, when measuring an inductive signal and wanting to synchronize it with a square signal, it will not be possible since it shares the same ground. I think I am correct. Greetings from Peru. I hope that Rotkee will be available as soon as possible
I hope to try the Rotkee oscilloscope soon! Regarding the inductive signal, as long as it is possible to use chassis ground for both channels, it should be ok. But you are correct, you can not ‘float’ the ground connections on the 2204a. I did a video about this; using the injector voltage test as an example 👍 cheers!
Thanks I need to get going again my 2204a is stuck in my toolbox.
Having said that I need to do a compression check so might treat my self to a amp clamp
Thanks for another great video. I have the 2205a and am able to do some of the automotive stuff with it that I wished for, mainly due to your super helpful videos. Thanks again for sharing 🙂
Great to hear Mark, awesome little tool that is! Thanks
Hi! I realize this video is about a year old, but I watched a ton of your videos and ended up buying a Pico 2204A based on your recommendation along with many different Pico, Rotkee and other accessories. Thank you for all you do! I was wondering if you would ever make a video discussing the settings in Pico 7 needed to use a Pico 2204A for automotive use like capture rate, etc. If you already have, I apologize, but I would love to see it.
We have various video access the channel covering this. We also have LOTS in our online training platform and mobile app mechanicmindset.com

Hope you enjoyed the video Yassin!
Brilliant video! Have you got a video of you showing the signal generator on 2204a yet? I’ve yet to test if i can use it to use the signal as a speed sensor for abs fault
I haven’t played with it much but I think that might be the most you can use it for. I don’t have a car with the AC type sensor else I’d try it
Thank you for your great review. 11:30 it is just hard to see over UA-cam how clear the signal is. Hoping it is much sharper when viewing in person. I downloaded the free software today for the Picoscope 2205a (PicoScope 7 T&M) to use the demo and the waveform does look pretty crisp and easy to tune.
@@johnson554671 It’s amazing for the price 👍
Awesome video Darren. Thank you
Excellent video.
And I've started watching your other ones.
And I think it's really worth emphasising that buying a low-end Handheld Hanatek (or worse) is basically throwing good money after bad.
If you really need a scope, they will let you down.
You're better off getting good kit like Pico Tech stuff.
And then building on it.
That way you're not being limited by the processing capacity of a cheap unit.
Nor by the screen size.
Maybe a silly question, but if you need to monitor 4 channels, could you just use two x 2-channel Pico's?
A 4-channel one is a LOT more than twice the price.
Agreed! You could get 2, you’d have to run separate software for each on but they should run on the same laptop at the same time.
Darren, thank you so much for all the fantastic video's you put out, just a quick question, does 'Rotkee' ship out all their products fairly quickly these day's ? (due to War conflict still unfolding there ) as i am looking to buy some cool accessories fairly quickly, as have a few awkward jobs in shop as well as booked in. would appreciate your kind response, Thanks mate, take care 🙂
@@sollykhan2385 thanks mate. They take a couple weeks I think. Maybe quicker
@@MechanicMindset Thank you for a rapid response, Darren 🙂 i shall send an order asap and hopefully get a delivery at some near point. i don't know whether you stock some items, but maybe if you could afford to carry some essential gear to ship out locally would perhaps be more efficient in the future? esp for the local people in the trade. i know the escalating cost's of expensive gear sitting about is something not easily absorbed. Cheers and keep up the great work, well appreciated 😇
@@sollykhan2385 It’s quite a timely task taking care of the shipping and all the other problems that come with re-selling Rotkee in the UK; honestly, they are taking care of it all just fine 👍

for using picoscope 2204a which software is best ? 7T&M ,6 ,
Great video and good information...
What software works with 2204a in automotive? I hear its not possible.
That’s right. Use normal Pico 7 (T&M) from picotech.com
Great content! You’ve done a wonderful job demonstrating how to use this scope in spite of its 8-bit limitations, but as I’m considering 2204A as my first scope, I’m wondering if being limited to 2 channels versus 4 channels or even 8 channels precludes being able to perform certain diags? If so, which ones?
4 channels is ideal, cam/crank with inlet & exhaust is just one example. But if you just want to give it a go, 2204a is great. You’ll be spending at least 4 times that price to get a decent 4 channel scope
I’d love to see a review on the N2 Neuron 2-Channel wireless
Awesome Vid. I just aquire a Pico 3404A. Is this a scope that can be used in the same way? From i understand, it is not an "automotive" scope and will not work with the auto sofrware? Should I get rid of it or keep it and give it a go?
Nice, give it a go! 👍
@@MechanicMindset Thanks. I will. Any advice on the software to use?

@@MechanicMindset thank you, sir!
Nice one Darren thanks
Where do you keep all this stuff? Like what do you use as an organizer or toolbox? or a bag maybe? suitcase?? lol.. That would be a great video. Maybe one of those "prepper" style roll up organizers with multiple zipper pockets would be the way to go.
Actually I just acquired a large Milwaukee grinder case. Gonna cut the mould out and get some foam. See how much I can get it. But right now, it’s all over the place 😆 most in a big box
@@MechanicMindset That's what I have-- it's all in a box. :) .. I think I'm going to try one of those roll up organizer tool bag type things.. There's some cheap options on Temu for like 7 dollen.. Has 5 zip up pouches. IDK yet, still looking. There's not really a dedicated scope organizer out there. I might throw it all in one of my rifle carrying cases with all the little pockets around the outside; or maybe a tactical backpack. Not sure just yet.
Have you tried the "Micsig Digital Automotive Tablet Oscilloscope 100MHz 4 Channels ATO1104"?
I’ve had a quick try. Lots of people like them, nice a convenient as all in one. Maybe I’ll get my hands on one soon 👍
Great video. Why are the “Automotive” Pico Scopes so much more expensive? Is it mainly because they can handle higher voltage inputs (ie: over 20 volts)?
The specifications are higher all round; voltage, memory, sample rate, resolution, the hardware is different with floating grounds, you get the diagnostic software plus the waveform library. Thats to name a few benefits. The cheap scope will have you appreciate the Automotive scope when you upgrade
Which is best oscilloscope i mean how many mhz reuired bandwidh & sampling rate ? Please suggest me sir
Hi Darren from Spain.
I love your videos. I am interested in buy a pico. 2204 or 2205.
Which one would do you recomend?
I have a hantek 1008c, but I dont like it.
Thanks
The 2205 has a better sample rate, so you will get better waveforms when measuring over longer periods of time. Hope that helps!
Ok. Thanks
Hi, why not the Pico 2205A? What is the difference between the two? Just the price? Is it a newer model to replace the 2204a?
2204A is fine. 2205A has better sample rate and memory - it's worth the extra money if you want to pay. Or pay more and get 4 channel 2405A - I just got it, will share soon!
@@MechanicMindset - Looking forward to your impression of the 2405A! I've looked at reviews, for some strange reason most of them mention it's not for Automotive applications when as far as I can see it definitely is. The Serial decoding is for Can bus (and many others) and all the sensors as they all communicate with serial protocols. It sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. I mainly work with microcontrollers communicating in UART and I2C.
As you showed in your relay video, sample rate is important. Thx for your videos!
@@renefuller9241 It’s not optimised for Automotive like the PicoAuto scopes are. But it does work. Just need to be aware of its limits 👍

@@MechanicMindset just to add the occasional dip into the classic car systems would also be of interest. How to trouble shoot with Modern tooling.
Question: as a beginner do we need both 65A and 650A current clamps or one of them is more usable in automotive diagnostics?
Depends what you want to do. You’ll need 650A for relative compression, but that’s not accurate for low current things like injectors and pumps so you’ll want the 64 for that
@@MechanicMindset Thanks a lot, I might consider buying both in that case. Different current ratings come with different accuracy and reading noise.
@@ceckoslav That’s right. Might be worth considering the Pico clamps, a little more expensive but better quality and longer cables

I would like to buy one of these 2204A scopes to diagnose an engine-camshaft timing issue but I need a sample of a good waveform.
I have seen piks of 400 v isnt that the max voltage using the 20x aenuator with the pico 2205a?? will not damage the scope?
Great content congrats
There is a 100V input voltage protection. Some with the attenuator, it’s 2000V protection. My scope is fine and it has been very abused 😅
Do you have a link to the coil on plug adapter? I would like to buy one. Its shown at 9:09 of the video.
What laptop specs would be required for best performance?
That’s a good question, hard to answer. Pico don’t really recommend by specs. Basically, the lower the spec, the slower the software runs. I have a 10 year old Lenovo Carbon X1 (fast in it’s day). 8GB ram, i5 intel. Windows 10. Works great.
@@MechanicMindset Thank you, that is very consistent with others I have asked.
Great!
Thanks for your vids, as a result I've put my hand in pocket and bought the 2204A and your cost effective route. At present my only need is to test the diesel injectors on my Ducato. They currently show variations greater than twice Fiat limits ( scantool Multiecuscan) Can this be shown/ measured with a scope. Would a clamp probe be needed? The Ducato injectors have 5 distinct phases (2 post main), the examples ive seen dont look as complicated. Sorry for the long question.
So what you will see is the injector time is increased. This corresponds to the variations/smooth running. Next step is to work out why (ie faulty injector, compression loss etc) 👍
@@MechanicMindset well scope has arrived and now sitting on my laptop. No probes yet. ended up buying the Hantek amp clamp via your amason link. Time to read and play. Thanks for your input and video help.
Just had a play and so far the wave forms are different from most ive seen online. Obviously are piezoelectric i have 3 sample with voltage and amps but 4th difficult to get at to start with. The one thing that surprised me was the current is measuring about 18amps. Getting close to the limmitation of the Hantek. If these are dodgy what current would kill the hantek. or am i seeing somthing seriously wrong. There is also some bouncing arround zero V. Is there a specific vid i should be looking at?
@@owainglyndwr333 I’ve not got anything for piezo diesel. However 18amps is fine for the Hantek amp clamps; they can measure up to 60 and anymore shouldn’t damage as there’s no direct contact
@@MechanicMindset Thanks for replying. I know that if anything is wrong with the injectors its going to be subtle, hence going down the scope route. will have to find a golden sample another motor i trust.

For that price just buy the 4425A. Unless you found one used, it’s a good scope. Still only 8 bit though.
For sample rate and bandwidth, the 2204A is fine for Automotive, we don’t actually need really high specs. 12 bit is good. Atleast 250K Samples I think. Thing is it’s not simple. As you add more channels, the maximum sample are drops
Can these softwares *decode* CAN too or they just show the waveform?
Yes it has serial decoding 👍
Hi Darren, could you suggest a way to pick up pulses from a mechanical diesel injection pump (Bosch Ve as found on Land Rover 200 tdi engines).
