This Birds Nest Spruce was collected by a gentleman in my club. He collected it from a closing business with permission of course. He collected the tree 1 day prior to me picking it up hence the ease of the "dig".
Now I'm sure I will catch some flack for putting organic material in this collected trees pot, but I ran out of my bonsai mix and my main priority was getting this roots covered in something before I caused anymore harm.
The tree has been very strong in it's recovery and through the growing season I will be fertilizing this guy heavy. Winter care for this tree is going to be tedious because its in pretty much 80% organic soil.
I will keep you all updated as this tree progresses!

Looks like it has a good amount of roots and some ramified branching already. Should be an exciting one to watch develop!
If you want any unsolicited advice, the black "contractor" bags are just like trash bags for packing up yard/yamadori, but much more durable and less likely to tear in transit. :)

Ah yes! Thanks for the tip hahaha I always thought it was just a black trash bag haha

Did the tree end up surviving it’s ordeal? Looks like it was struggling before you dug it up.

It did not unfortunately. The business it was dug from was closed for quite some time so the plants on the property were completely neglected. It also didn't help that we had 4 days during the summer of 100+.

@@PNWBonsai Thanks for the reply. Looks like it could have been a beautiful specimen, but just too far gone.
I recently rescued an 90 year old nest spruce from a family friend. It’s always been in a container and is very well trained, but I think it was suffering from needle cast and lost three secondary lower branches. I also received it last spring and re potted it pretty late into the season, had to take lots of extra precautions to keep it safe from that 100+ heat wave we had. I’m in Portland BTW 👋

@@blurboards1 Ahh so you dealt with that monstrosity of a heatwave as well! I'm glad yours survived! When I saw the tree and I was already on the fence about it surviving at all, but cant beat free haha.

@@PNWBonsai we sure did. I hope we don’t have to deal with that every summer. Pretty brutal.
I’m with ya. I have 70+ bonsai and still can’t refuse adopting trees. My .25 of an acre is getting pretty packed lol
