I suffer from bad night calf cramps frequently. It's awful....recognizing it's happening and then trying to jump out of bed from a dead sleep to keep the cramp from doing real damage and being sore for days. All I drink is water all day....nothing else. For those of you suffering from calf cramps, I did buy the magnesium oil and it seems to work. There's also another product I highly recommend called Theraworks. It's a foamy spray that you apply to your calves. Rub it into your calves and it dries within a few seconds, doesn't smell at all and leaves no residue on your skin. I highly recommend this product (I'm not paid or sponsored by them or anything). I tried it out of absolute desperation a few years ago and it worked instantly. I've been using it for a few years now....not everyday but when I feel like my calves are a bit tight. I'll just apply it right before I go to bed. I've never gotten a cramp when I've used it. Try it.

I got my first cramp when I was in my young teens the pain was absolute frightening and agonising. I found out one night how to quickly stop it. What I do is jump out of bed place my foot flat on the ground and stand up putting weight on the leg with the cramp. It goes straight away. I got one last night and the pain even though I I stopped it after a few seconds nearly killed me.

It’s both magnesium and potassium that helps relax and contract the muscles actually.
Not enough water can contribute to this, but also too much water will flush electrolytes out.
    It’s a balance.

Definitely appreciate the massage and exercise tips! I take magnesium and learned there are different types of magnesium and some are not bioavailable, usually the cheapest one Magnesium Oxide. Each type has a different affect on different parts of the body and have other additional benefits. Do your research and just like Dr Rowe said talk to your doctor to see what would work best for you. I take both Magnesium Glycinate and Magnesium Citrate. Also keep in mind you take too much so start slow with dosing to optimize

My right calf cramps when I extend my foot. It happens at night if I use that leg wrong to readjust and will lock in place with my toe pointed. I massage it, but usually will have to get out of bed, press my toes into the floor, and force it to let go. The muscle twitches like crazy afterwards.
I had a 2cm herniated disc last year, had to have surgery of course. My S1 nerve root was completely compressed. I still have residual numbness down my leg, into my foot, because I let it go too long, thinking it would get better. I don't know if that has any bearing on the cramping or not.
I started drinking about 64oz of water a day with Remag liquid magnesium, take a potassium supplement, and try to stretch at least once daily. Been a few of months now since I started the supplements, instead of almost nightly, episodes are down to 2-3 nights a week.

To test for hydration. Pinch then release a very small amount of loose skin on your arm above your wrist. If the skin stays up momentarily that indicates dehydration. If it falls right back you probably have enough water in your system
