  • Clutch pedal adjustment is an important part of your Subaru clutch, transmission, or engine install. Tom from our engine department joins Anthony in explaining the risk of poor clutch adjustment, the damage it can cause, and how to adjust your clutch pedal in this week’s video. Don’t let your engine fall victim to improper clutch pedal adjustment!

rabbit hole I have traveled. Thank you for the video!
I don’t have a competition clutch, but I definitely have more than 3/8” play in my clutch pedal. Tried to get some warranty work around the clutch and gearbox and the “master tech” didn’t know how to adjust it on my GR Corolla. I experienced a few mis-shifts more than I would have liked and going to try this to see if I can reduce the play a bit without overdoing it.

I had a horrendous noise coming from 4th and 5th and had adjusted the new clutch many times but setting the free play at the slave cylinder was what ended the noise problem. I made a custom slave push rod so I can set the clutch pedal. Then adjust the slave to perfect and I also built a longer arm so I have a shorter clutch making all this way more advanced but repeat process over and over again and then make the correct clutch travel distance and line that up with the clutch slave cylinder and yes it’s all crucial to a good drive feelingS

I watched the video, and I applied the this tech to my 2010 WRX. I have a 1999 JDM 6 speed with a stage 4 clutch, I've had a lot if issues with noise and extended clutch problems. This worked great, there are two clutch sensors that I had to adjust. I used a 3\4 inch long screw, and some lock tight. I also had to cutdown the tap and wield a small T handle to make it super short. And I didn't have to remove the gas peddle.
Thank you. This saved me a lot of money.

Does the stock clutch fork for a BRZ/86/FRS need free play like that between the fork and the slave cylinder? I can't find any information on this in service manuals or the like. Most people describe free play as the distance between when you start pressing the pedal and when the clutch disengages, not when the slave cylinder hits the clutch fork. I also can't seem to depress my slave cylinder which according to the service manual is a bad thing. Haven't checked to see if my pedal travel is within spec.

That’s the clutch master cylinder, but good try.
Also, this upgrade can be counterintuitive when running a HD pressure plate as the counterforce is provided by the crank making contact with the bearings. The disk could not be disengaging entirely making shifting even worse and more resistive causing premature synchro wear.

Having to push the clutch in to start the car annoyed me, so I made a clutch bypass switch with a momentary button so I can start the car in neutral instead of putting pressure on the thrust bearings with no oil present when starting... The switch is in parallel with the stock clutch switch so it still functions 😊

if you have a slave that is inside the bell housing you cannot move the fork as there is no fork, so what are you supposed to do in a situation like this? my 350z has a slave that is a rubber boot style inside the bell housing, there is no way to check it. and if you adjust this kind wrong you wont have enough pressure in the rubber slave inside the bell housing to push against the pressure plate and then you wont be able to change gears while driving.

Good video, just a bit misleading in the beginning making me think my oe clutch (pedal) is misaligned

Ps.. Subaru hydro clutches are the hardest to bleed IV ever done. I had to make a custom syringe to suck fluid and air out and then lift clutch and push as much fluid as you can press, untill the syringe gets rock hard. Then close nipple. This will solve your clutch problems.

I have a stock 2017 wrx and my clutch feels heavy, I come from a Honda so this clutch feels like a stage 3 or 4 or something. The clutch barely has any free play and it’s insanely stiff, idk if adjusting my pedal is going to help w the stiffness and heaviness.

you can disengage it while driving at about half, maybe slightly more, really depends where your clutch actually disengages.ideally this is the best way to be shifting anyways. all the way in is only for starting, or blowing cylinders, and i guess getting your warranty denied on your IAG engine lol

In the video it says to losses the locking nut and twist the rod counter clockwise but for me when I went counterclockwise it got worse so then went back to the original spot I had it and did 2 full rotations clockwise and it took up.all that free play in my clutch!! I have a stage 2 clutch. Maybe give this a try, go clockwise instead. Omg so happy now!

Actually, this is exactly the scenario in which you want to make sure that your clutch is properly adjusted. Aftermarket clutches can put undo stress on the engine's thrust bearing and cause premature wear when not properly adjusted.
