This song is easy to relate to. When he sings about walking into a restaurant and people are staring at him wondering if he’s a woman or a man, because of his long hair. Anyone who’s ever felt alone or felt like an outcast can relate that feeling. It’s probably his best song. He’s in my top 5 of all time.
Not on his released tracks anyway. In one interview he said he feels compelled to finish writing every song he starts, and as a consequence he occasionally finished some really bad songs.😁
The people in the restaurants would make fun of the band because they had long hair. Lyrics - "Is that a woman or a man?" Back then, long hair was seriously frowned upon.
Bob Seger is a great rock singer, songwriter & musician known for his raspy powerful voice. He wrote & recorded songs that dealt with love, women & blue-collar themes. He had so many great songs especially in the 70's-80's such as "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man", "Night Moves", "Turn The Page", "Mainstreet", "Still The Same", "Hollywood Nights", "Against The Wind", "You'll Accomp'ny Me", "Shame On The Moon", "Roll Me Away", "Like A Rock", "Shakedown", "We've Got Tonight" & "Old Time Rock & Roll".
Many many cigarettes, make for a really "RASPY" voice, but in the end those cigarettes end up ruining not only your voice but your life overall!! Bob Segar knows this, as I know this from first hand experience. I ""WAS"" a talented and gifted singer and could sing anything!! By the time I reached to age of 50 my voice could no longer do what it use to. I know that had I not been a lifelong smoker my voice could have lasted for many, many more years. This message is for all of the gifted singers out there, if you smoke and want to continue to belt out that great voice of your's ((PLEASE-QUIT!!)) I know much easier than most people have any 💡. Anyhow, thanks y'all for your awesome channel and mostly for just being YOU... 🤗
Nice reaction to a classic! Something people miss in the lyrics: when he's talking about going into the cafe from the cold, he says sometimes you hear people talk other times you can't. It's the same o'l cliché, is that a woman or a man. He's referencing how people would say that with dudes with long hair, visualize the 70s when every dude had long hair and the older generation would chastise them for having it. It really speaks to how people talk down on others for being outside their norm. Been going on forever
To me Alto Reid's sax gives it a haunting feel. The line "is it a man or a woman" back then us young guys had long hair and we heard it all the time. Check out his radio video of this song you'll see how long his hair was.
Rest in peace, Thomas Cartmell, AKA Alto Reed, one of Seger's legendary Silver Bullet Band members and saxophone player. He died one year ago today, December 30, 2020. May I recommend one of Bob's best and least requested tracks, "Famous Final Scene". It is an absolutely stunning track about the end of a relationship and will be highly relatable to many.
I saw Seger in Phoenix. We had great seats but it didn't matter. When he came on stage the entire coliseum stood up and never sat back down. Definitely one of my top 10 concerts. Love you guys keep doing what you do!
Bob's live albums are the best, other great tunes by Bob are, Sunspot Baby, The Fire Down Below, Her Strut, Katmandu, Feel Like A Number, Betty Lous Gettin' Out Tonight, The Horizontal Bop, Bo Diddley, And many many more. Bob is one of my favorites.
@@martinlepper4522 Very true. Both Katmandu and Turn the Page were great live. Didn't care for the recorded version of either. Bob Seger seems to be better live. Forgotten Bob Seger song, and one of my favorites "Famous Final Scene". Kevin Buchholz mentions really good Seger songs Feel Like A Number, Betty Lous Gettin' Out Tonight, and would add the live version of "Let it Rock" from the Nine Tonight album.
This is a song that has more meaning to me than any other song in history. With my work also in entertainment. I spent countless hours on the road. Every word of this song I can relate to! And then I'm on the stage again!
It was actually a concert from September 1975 in cobo hall Detroit that is the live bullet album which is considered by many to be the best live rock album .
You need to watch live videos and see Bob in all his glory on stage...he was breathtaking when he had really long hair! I've seen him in concert 11 times starting in 1978, left every show smiling and exhausted from dancing and singing. Love me some Bob!!!
One thing that's great about Segar is he sounds just as good live as he does on the studio tracks. I've seen him live several times and he is truly blessed. Not many can top his live sound. Of course all of today's music is studio tricks. No need to auto tune Mr. Segar.
Story time! My dad committed suicide when I was 17 years old, 2 weeks before my 18th birthday and 1 week after Father's Day. He always told me he wanted this song played at his funeral. Well, i made sure it was played. The saxophone is so eerie in a chapel. If you listen to this song from a depressed person's mindset, it has a whole nother meaning. Still gives me goose bumps. Much Love ❤
Somewhere in my attic is a sweet little note from Bob, from way back in the day. A mutual friend thought we should meet but I was still in high school & didn't do anything about it. Maybe I should've. You should watch the video for this song that shows a montage of photos of Bob through the years. Gives you a better feel for what the song's about, his life on the road & as a Rock star. And he is, indeed, Rock. That's the genre. "Hollywood Nights", "Main Street" & "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" are great ones you might check out next.💙☮💙
Best memory I have of a concert where audience participation stopped the singer. Gave me chills just listening to the audience sing this song...he just gave them the mic and let them sing. Was awesome.
His lyrics immerse me in the moment of the song. I'm the guy stepping off the bus into the cold. I'm the guy who is popular amongst friends and loved ones but feeling alone in the spotlight on the stage. He has an amazing ability of tapping into the feelings I don't say aloud for fear of being the only one who feels that way, yet reminds me I'm not alone.
When I saw him do this song, the sax player climbed up to the top of the stadium, balanced himself with one leg between two guard rungs, leaned backwards, all lights dimmed, except the spotlight on the sax player, wailing out his solo, then the lights slowly came up on the stage with Bob & the band. OH, my God! Outside arena, beautiful dark Summer night I will never forget it! I'm a Michigander and we selfishly claim Bob Seger as ours! Rock on forever, Mr. Fabulous Bob Seger! xoxoxoxoxo
@alex35agm Definitely missing Bob's ability to feel his soul in the remake, and of course it's not the same without Alto Reed's haunting Sax Solos in it. Nobody does it better than Bob Seger putting the total package together in his songs. My favorite musician!
@@garyphillips6270 I agree but I don't think James was trying to out do a Master such as Bob. I do believe they achieved what they set out to do. The video is quite Sad But True as well.

You called his music "Soft Rock" not so. First big hit was Ramblin Gamblin Man and part of his band was Glen Frey who went to form the Eagles. Segers first band was the Last Herd. Then the Bob Seger System. Then the Silver Bullet Band which originally had Grand Funk Railroad boys in the band. Alto Reed was the sax. RIP. Bob has as place near me on Lake Huron in North Michigan where he stages his 40 footer sailboat that he races. His first boat was named Against the Wind. Imagine that.
In the 70s when I went on a bike trip this tape and Meatlofe were the two tapes I made sure I took with me. In " Turn The Page " he was describing what it was like if you were traveling and had long hair and went into a restaurant or bar you had better be careful what you said. Everyone would be staring at you. That is when you get up and leave and turn the page. " Hair " is another one of his songs.
Bob is one of the greatest story tellers of all time. His songs not only paint a picture, they put you in the middle of a world he is singing about. Bob is one of out hometown heroes. I was born and raised in Metro Detroit and he is from right here. Out of so many great Detroit/ Michigan performers he is at the top of the list.
Picture, hall packed with people, the lights go out, then from the highest point in the arena comes the sound of Alto Reids sax and a spotlight stabs thru the dark to shine on him standing playing Turn the Page. That's the experience of Bob Seger
One night we were headed for Chicago, east of Omaha, my drummer said "Dang, this is my last cigarette" and this song came on the radio. Well heck then.
You a lucky man BJ . Asia your beautiful. To me this song is so well put together it’s one of my top songs. No one else could have done this song justice
I don’t think Bob Seger ever had a bad song. “Roll Me Away” is another great one.

And sadly continues on anew with each subsequent generation of humanity. Why can't humanity simply Live and Let Live?
That song always spoke to my Dad. Hard working, honest man- with long hair on a motorcycle in the 70s.

Picture, hall packed with people, the lights go out, then from the highest point in the arena comes the sound of Alto Reids sax and a spotlight stabs thru the dark to shine on him standing playing Turn the Page. That's the experience of Bob Seger
Bob Seger is a legend and a true classic❤💯💯💯
