The thing I really like about the solo at the end is it isn't simply instrument, it is actually telling the second half of the story. The first part of the song is explaining to his girl he he needs to be free. He finally breaks it off with her, and flies free, and that is when the solo starts, that is what his freedom sounds like. That is how I see it anyway.
That's what freedom sounds like
Yes THAT is what freedom sounds like
I thought it was about a bunch of weirdos getting shot in a convertible? 🤣
Exactly. That's him hitting road and hauling ass.
That is sounds of tell her by Falica as you do burnouts in her front yard with the Trans am kicking up dirt all over her trailer
This solo by all 3 guitarist has been known to go on for 20 minutes
What a bloody treat that'd be eh?!?! Dayum!
I need to find the live video which shows the three of them side-by-side playing one of the best damn guitar solos ever made
@@michellec2514 live at the Oakland Coliseum
@@ChrisKim1562 thank you yep that was it so awesome I can watch it over and over again.
@@michellec2514 An even better one is Knebworth '76. But as great as the video is it was even better in person... ua-cam.com/video/l4PzuG5exyM/v-deo.html
The greatest thing about this song is that it’s not just A guitar solo. There are 3 guitars going at the same time. The only band I can think of that can pull this off. That’s why they are legendary.
and a bass guitar
legends indeed
4 guitars going...never leave out the infamous bass...bad ass, asbury park 1977...amazing live...
i believe the dire strats had had a formation with 3 guitars and a bass at some point, not sure
There never will be a Southern Rock band that is as dynamic and just freaking amazing as Lynyrd Skynyrd. God bless them and they are in heaven playing together again 👍🙏🏻
"Simple man" is one of those songs that you will remember and appreciate for the rest of your life!!!🎼👌🎵👍🎶✌😀
Right on Brian Fisher, 'Simple Man'' is the song they should do next.
simple man is one of the best songs every written.
Teared up on farewell tour during simple man. Memories
Yes, my second favourite Skynyrd song after Freebird :)
I have "Troubles will come, and they will pass" tattooed above my elbow. Positive message man.
LIVE version from the Oakland Coliseum is fire!
Definitely
The Knebworth show 1976 is better even the video is grainy, you get to actually SEE the guitars extensively.
@@Janetjrfan not really, Knebworth has a couple good close up guitar shots about 3 seconds and then the camera zooms out again. There are similar shots in Oakland too, but overall Oakland is much better quality and the crowd shots are wild. Lets face it though if you're a fan like us you like them both. Here's some links if anybody wants to check them out: Knebworth >>> ua-cam.com/video/l4PzuG5exyM/v-deo.html Oakland >>> ua-cam.com/video/QxIWDmmqZzY/v-deo.html
Yah you should watch this! Solo done by Mr Allen Collins..
YES. Please check out Oakland if you want a real treat.
This is one of those "Speeding ticket" culprits. You put that one while cruising - and during that outro guitar next thing you know you're doing 80 and got no idea how that happened!!
Amazing what real musical artists can do with their instruments - no computers, no digital parts - all played in real time with one another like a well oiled machine.
That was my mom when we went anywhere, she'd turn that one up...I was like ...go mom...hahahahahaha!!! I'm 59 now and all my now grown kids are used to that and dig it...
"I'm sorry officer I was listening to freebird" should be valid in court if you ask me, lol
For sure bro 😂🤘
@@colonelb same applies to 'flirtin with disaster' by Molly Hatchet, haha. Once saw a comment saying that song turns minivans into muscle cars, haha
80?? how come you took your foot off the pedal?? Only joking. Different speed limits in the UK, 70 the limit on major roads so a lot cruise at 80. With one eye on speed cameras, naturally. I did live in the US for a while over 40 years ago and remember the freeway limit being either 50 or 55 which did seem slow. Never forget returning from a Jackson Browne concert at Rosemont Horizon, Chicago with friends in their camper van. The driver lit a joint and next thing we were hurtling down the freeway. I'm busy saying prayers. The driver did spot a police car ahead, he slammed on the brakes, his spliff out the window and fortunately we returned home slow and safe.
One of the greatest songs of all time. It definitely taught me patience as a kid waiting for THAT moment when it completely goes into the stratosphere.....
and the best end of a movie ever... devils reject... exactky so i wanna die once...
Now you need to watch the LIVE version!! More than one guitarist doing that "solo".
Absolutely
The only band I've ever heard with 3 lead guitarists.. absolute fire 🔥
Never heard anything from IRON MAIDEN? ;)
Several bands have more than two but they weren't these guys!
I think it's special because it was always played in memory of the members of the band that died in that fateful plane crash. The world lost real talent that day😢CREEKSQUAD RIP❤️
Imagine you are in an old school Mustang with the top down, cruisin' in a world with no cell phones, no internet, no 24 hour tv, disconnected from the world with just your friends in the car jamming to music like this, Zeppelin, The Stones, Pink Floyd, The Who, Black Sabbath etc. We were free as birds back then in our youth. Totally different world. Everything was raw and real. No digital touch ups. No auto tune, just young people with talent on instruments. Amazing simple time back then. Glad you enjoyed it. To some of us that lived it, it was a joy to see people react to this music.
Should have done live from Oakland. It has to be seen to fully appreciate and how freaking nuts the crowd gets.
This x 1000
I agree
Yes please
Musically I like the live version better as well. But yeah, hot chicks.
@@DK-ed7be It is amazeballs how many hot women loved Lynyrd Skynyrd. That concert was a sea of eye candy.
Tuesday's gone, and simple man you need to do also. Believe there were 7 members in this band. Great band!
Yes!!
You get three of the most talented players in Allen Collins, Gary Rossington and Ed King. This triple assault was something to see in concert.
Was it Ed King? That must have been right before Steve Gaines joined thr band. I've seen a live version with Steve, so I just assumed it was him on the studio recording. Good to know!
@@ottohesslein3230 This is from their 1st album (Ed King). Steve Gaines replaaced him in their 4th album I believe, One More From The Road.
Watching this played live is like watching a masterpiece being put together. The way the band hits the ending is so good.
I've had the pleasure of seeing these guys in concert. Free bird was the finale. A tribute to the lost band members names in white clouds over a bald eagle on an American flag. Amazing.
RESPECT xxxx
'I don't think there's too much more you can do with a guitar!'
Stevie Ray Vaughn: Hold my beer
YEEESSSS! SVR live at the El Macombo. Now that was a guitar solo
Eddie van Halen too
yet no band could ever follow allen collins live when he performed this solo. no one could follow it. it was an experience
You get the main guitar solo and two other guitars doing side solos paralleling it but not mimicking it. Perfect.
for like a couple decades after this song came out, almost every concert, every festival and dive bar show big and little no matter who was on stage, when it came time for the band to wrap up with a jam some people in the crowd would yell FREE-BIRD!!!
That just shows how iconic this song is.
So True!!
Still does
Absolutely ❤️❤️❤️
Well, because no band could really play the song, esp. the guitar battle :)
Yep.
One of the greatest solos and songs in rock history = when that bird flies the whole world ROCKS!
This genre of music is called southern rock, it was big in the 70's to early 80's
You have to watch the live version!!! Lynyrd Skynyrd Free Bird: Live in Oakland, Ca!! Even if you don't do a reaction to it, cause it's seems some channels are having trouble with reacting to the live video. You owe it to yourself to listen/see it.
Or the live version out of Knebworth. Must be seen LIVE! And, before the plane crash.
So great to see just band members and fans - no cell phones (although I'm sure they'd use them if available at the time). Either way, nice to see a pure concert that way.
That is exactly why I love the videos of performances at Woodstock, The Old Grey Whistle Test, etc.... Best shows ever.
Such a long piece of music and at no point do you get fatigued by it. A joy from beginning to end. The live version at the colliseum is incredible.
I truly love this song. For I lost my wife two years ago in my arms. She died with a massive heart attack. We were together 26 years. An She was my true soul mate. Can't wait to be with her again. This was her favorite song.
Sorry my friend condolences 🙏
much love brother. sending positive & healing energy your way, may the rest of your days be full of peace
oh wow....im so sorry. i know exactly how you feel. lost my wife almost 3 yrs ago and we were married 23 yrs and now its just me and our 13 yr old daughter. we were soulmates and both of us loved this song. i wish you peace and just know brother.....someone out here feels your pain. i still feel my wifes' presence everyday.
One of the best dueling guitar solos you'll ever hear!
Again one of the greatest southern rock bands of all time got to see them twice live and they do not disappoint this song is a true classic
The operative word here is LIVE.
There's a man from Texas called Stevie Ray Vaughn who does a live cover of the Jimi Hendrix song Voodoo Child which is absolutely killer. If you want to see one of the greatest guitarists ever, you have to check him out.
Really? Ha ha! The El Macambo TEXAS Flood video is one I ALWAYS click on. Fucking hilarious! Every time! Never gets old. Blowing minds across YT. SRV never fails!
@@philstone3859 yeah, Texas Flood is great, but they were talking about rock guitar in the video, and Voodoo Child is his most rock performance. Texas Flood is amazing, but if you're looking for rock, it's Voodoo Child.
3 Skynyrd songs you really should listen to, because of the lyrics, are: 1. Simple Man, 2. The Ballad of Curtis Loew and 3. Dead Man Walking.
Shoutout to Gary Rossington the last real living member of Lynyrd Skynyrd and the man who just blessed us with the slide guitar.
Collins and rossington were beast no one could compare
I think Artimus Pyle is still alive, he survived the plane crash, he was the drummer.
@@kfiscal01 True. Too bad he’s not the drummer in Lynyrd Skynyrd now. I mean Gary is the only real member left in Lynyrd Skynyrd. But the original drummer Bob and all the other original members are passed away
Asia, never ever apologize for singing. You have a beautiful voice.
The bird soars. Such a beautiful song.
These guys could literally play for hours at a time. GOATS
The ballad of Curtis Lowe and simple man a couple good jams
This song is considered their swan song, ALMOST forbidden to be covered by any artist, you rarely ever hear a band cover it since their tragic deaths because no artist has really been able to do it justice.
I genuinely believe, at least in the southern U.S., you won't find a song that's covered more than this exact song.
Lynyrd Skynyrd's "That Smell" features their "Best Guitar Work" and IMO is their Best Song!
The Best Version is them playing Live in Knebworth, England in 1976. They opened for the Rolling Stones. The stage was shaped like a Big Red Tongue and Mic Jagger had told all the other bands to stay off of the tongue and that it was reserved for the Stones. During " Free Bird ", Ronnie leads the 3 guitarists down onto the tongue where they burned the place down. Mic Jagger was pissed and said L S would never open for the Stones again. When they came back to the U S, a reporter asked Ronnie why did he disobeyed Jagger's request. Ronnie replied, " I just wanted to prove the wrong band opened that day and we did ".
Lynyrd Skynyrd "that smell" some of the most finest guitar work on that track!!!!
Have y’all done Stevie Ray Vaughn “Texas Flood” live at El Macambo yet. Not to belittle this guitar solo which is one of my favorites, BUT…….haven’t seen nothing yet. He is next level!
The height of southern rock is The allman bothers “tied to the whipping post” (album not live). Hold back the emotions y’all
To fully appreciate this band and the solo you really have to watch them performing this song in front of a live audience. Amazing.
Southern rock. Try Doobie Brothers …. Black Water. Live version is best. It’s a song that needs the crowd.
Yea Doobie Brothers for sure
Yeah...Black Water for sure....
Curtis Loew and Four Walls of Raiford are my recommends for their soulful acoustic vibes ❤
hey dude, if you've never heard it, you should checkout Jamey Johnson's cover of "Four Walls of Raiford"
I really appreciate and respect your openness to new sounds and styles- "lots of people get stuck in that rut and never get out." We were gifted to receive all this music in the 60's and70's. It was a time of experimentation and an attitude of "hey, wonder what this all about." We found music brought people together.
Live version at Knebworth is simply The best version of this song ever put on film!
Love that smile from her during the solo. Priceless. Stay blessed 🙏🙏🤘🤘🤘🙏🙏🙏
Yeah, that's one of the best guitar solos. Three guitarists going off on that one!
This song was hugely popular for years. All through the 70's. Great song. After the tragic plane crash it took on a life of its own.
Theres another southern rock band that features 3 guitarist`s. Molly Hatchet has a bunch of chart toppers as well. They were my 1st ever concert..a 3 way duel of guitarist`s is an experience.
Yes! Molly Hatchet is a must band to listen to! Flirtin with Disaster to start! Awesome guitars for sure!!!
I love seeing you too enjoy Freebird for the first time, I was lucky enough to see them live and to say the place went nuts when they busted out with the guitar solo would be an understatement! Now you need to hear Dire Straits Sultans of swing!(Alchemy live version) is the best version!
Don't let them make the same mistake with Dire Straits that they've done here with Lynyrd Skynyrd - choose a lame version to react to. If they do Dire Straits' "Sultans of Swing," it MUST be the Sultans of Swing (Alchemy Live) version. Any other version is disappointing by comparison.
@@woodysthoughts4032 Yes you are right! I fixed it!
This was my nephew's graduation song,it was so overwhelming, you could hear a couple thousand singing. And mouthing the guitar riffs Cooool
Triple guitar attack 🎸🎸🎸 Welcome to the sound of Red Neck Rock n Roll GOAT Band 👏👏👏
Haha, when BJ said, "And this bird you CANNOT change, Im fittin' to fly". I thought to myself, oh he's gonna fly alright, you just don't know... And if you don't know, now you know 😎
You guys have got to see this live, it’s even more awesome watching!
Simple Man is the Song I Play for my Son every Year on his Birthday. He will be 45 this year. This song is a Must Hear!!!!
My son/mother dance at his wedding
The first time that Lynyrd Skynyrd played for a very large crowd was at Sedalia, Missouri in 1974 at a three-day concert. That was the first time I saw them play live but it would not be the last.
Great reaction love how you guys react. You should listen to live Freebird at Knebworth in 76 or Oakland in 77 it will not disappoint you all. Alan Collins is the greatest guitarist to play on any stage anywhere. Check out live Needle and the Spoon he’s great in that song as well. Please keep em coming.
one of the most classic rock songs ever...great reaction
My favorites besides this one is Simple man, ballad of Curtis Lowe, gimme 3 steps.
Your reaction Asia as a piece of classical music I one I've never heard before. I'm a child of the 60' and 70's and I'm really glad you could understand the quality of the musicians on that song. The guitar playing is other worldly. It really is " today's Beethovan." You give me hope for the younger generation.
This came out the year I graduated from high school, 1973. My group of friends used to hang out in the neighborhood park in Brooklyn, NY with a circle of boom boxes (they were popular back then, some taking a dozen D batteries) and when this came on the radio we all turned them up blasting loud. I always loved this song, just because of the feel of it. I still love it after all these years. I'm glad to see younger folks enjoying the stuff from the past. "Hold On Loosely" by 38 Special is another great southern rock song you might enjoy. It doesn't have the wow factor of this song, but it's still an excellent song in my opinion.
It is completely fair to give this song a second reaction and do one of the 1970s LIVE versions. Just WATCH these guys rock out on those solos... its impressive with studio sound... but to do THAT on stage, LIVE... it was mindbending energy.
I'm 73 and when I heard this song in 74 when it came out as a single I thought I caught the holy ghost and nothing has changed it still bops my head and moves me. I saw them twice and all their concerts ends with Freebird. Singer Ronnie Van Zant and one guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister were killed just a few years after. Lost out on a ton of good music from them. Only the drummer Artimus Pyle who survived the crash is living and was very heroic during the rescue in the swamps. Gary Rossington the guitarist on the slide guitar at the beginning credits him for saving his life when he was trapped under a wing almost drowning
I love your reaction to this. It's an important test to me. This is an insanely powerful song and if it doesn't create something powerful in you, we don't have much to talk about. Look forward to more!
The amount of talent that came out of North Florida back in the day was insane.
The 904.
Yup. Maybe they'll get into some Tom Petty 😁
@@bethshadid2087 Tom took guitar lessons from none other than Don Felder in Gainesville back in the day.
@@757optim didn't know that....awesome....thanks 😊
@@bethshadid2087 Here's one I just learned about today. Mae Axton, Hoyt Axton's mother, introduced Elvis to Col. Parker after Elvis performed in Jacksonville. She had moved to Jax in '49 with her military husband. Mae co-wrote "Heartbreak Hotel", which was a #1 hit for Elvis. Hoyt wrote "Joy To The World" ("Jerimiah was a bullfrog..."), which was a #1 for Three Dog Night. The only mother/son songwriters to each write a #1 song.
I love you guy’s genuine reactions to good music. You guys are awesome.
One the best guitar solos I have heard in my life :)
RIP Gary Rossington. He was a great guitarist
I saw them live in 1977 and witnessed a 22 minute version of the song….1 of the most amazing things I've ever seen.
Love y'alls reaction to the guitars at the end. Live your channel, love your personalities, and your input . Thank you for working so hard to bring a great show with great content and brilliant genuine reactions.
Love watching Reactors hearing this for the first time. 2 songs in one! Then 3 guitars🎸🎸🎸 going NUTS at the same time. Such a great jam. Congrats for striking gold. 🎵🎵🎵
Lynyrd Skynyrd has three lead guitars not just one, That's why there is so much sound, Garry Rossingtom lead guitar and slid, Allen Collins lead Guitar, Steve Gaines lead Guitar,, Leon Wilkenson bass guitar, Billy Powell Keys, Artimus Pyle drums, And Ronnie VanZant lead vocls , All but Gary Rossington and Artimus Pyle has passed, Ronnie VanZant Steve Gaines and Steves sister and one of the backup singer Cassie Gaines were killed in the plane crash. The three lead guitars were killer.
Imagine being at the concert when they played this it was awesome!
Now you have to listen to “Simple Man”, pure southern rock awesomeness.
Gary Rossington, last surviving founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd has passed away at aged 71. How about a tribute reaction to the song, "I need You So"
Best Southern Rock ever! I live in the same town they were raised in. High school buddy's. Named their band after their high school coach, Leonard Skinner.
I go visit their graves sometimes. They wrote all their own music. I'm so happy you young kids love my generation music.
BJ: "I don't think there's much else you can do with a guitar."
EVH: "Hold my beer..."
Eruption, live without a net 1986...check it out if you haven't already. ✌❤
SRV might want to set his beer down too for a couple of minutes and jump into this little guitar excellence jam. RIP to both.
And when EVH and SRV are done......BUCKEDHEAD.....you two hold my beer.
EVH: “Hold my cigarette!
You ain't seen nothing till you've seen all 3 guitars just ripping it live in Oakland! Those boys tore it UP that day.
Some fun facts about Ronnie Van Zant:
- He wrote most of the songs they recorded, committing them to memory, not pen and paper.
- He always went onstage barefoot, explaining he "had to feel the stage."
- He once told his father that he'd never live to see the age of 30, saying "Daddy, that's my limit."
- Those guitarists you hear in this solo are what Ronnie referred to as "my mules".
- His brother Donnie played in "38 Special", and his brother Johnny sang for Skynyrd after Ronnies death.
I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in concert and the song Freebird as their encore and they completely went wild with that Solo
Really loved your reaction, this was the jam in the 70’s❤️
Do the Oakland Colosseum performance one so you can see the crowd!! And it’s a little bit different cus there’s more solos (even w the piano 😄). You’ll love it! ❤️ 🙏🏼✌🏼the energy between the crowd and the band is *insane* and you’ll def wish you would’ve been there for it! Also there are four strings players (3 guitarists and one bassist) 🙂
That guitar solo is seriously a vibe!
Best guitar solo ever, and it is insane.
Such a massive iconic song from one of the greatest bands of all time. Thank you for the reaction!
You guys are working!!!!!
I love what y'all were saying about the respect for guitar players and rock music because it is so different every sound is different. You should watch the Oakland concert that's when you really see the three guitar players playing together and it's just amazing
Hey guys, you want to see this Live, you can find a live concert version of Free bird. We lost Vanzant and a couple other band members years ago in a plane crash. So Sad!! Just a Awesome Classic that has Survived the test of time for a Long Time!! VanZant was the lead singer. Awesome Band!!!!!!! Awesome Song!!! Hope you chose to listen to more of this Great Great Band!! One of my All time Favorites!!!!
To get the full impact of the skill that this band has ,you need to watch the live from Oakland 1977 performance. To witness the great guitar playing and how the crowd goes absolutely insane is worth seeing. This will give you a true feel of what it was like to go to a real concert with real singing and real instruments and fans who are there for the music, unlike the computerized ,lip synced fashion shows of today, where people are there to be seen and put pics on their Instagram.
Why does everyone choose this live version. IT'S NOWHERE NEAR THE BEST LIVE VERSION!!! Choose the England concert where The Rolling Stones almost refused to follow them on stage and promptly fired them from the tour because they were too good.
@@nielgregory108 The crowd at Knebworth is full of pastey limeys with brown teeth, this crowd is way more responsive and filled with hot California girls.
You would have enjoyed the song much more Live at the Oakland Coliseum Stadium 1977
Amazing band, hugely great songs. Saw them live 2 times. Free Bird was a party in itself. Ask anyone who was there 😁
Call Me The Breeze and Simple Man will bless your soul if you listen to those two Lynyrd Skynyrd classics. Most Rock bands had one lead guitarist. Lynyrd Skynyrd said hold my beer, and they had THREE.
He went from Mourning Dove to Peregrine Falcon. Yes, you definitely need to see their live performance at the Oakland Coliseum
Please React to Jimi Hendrix Live Purple Haze his guitar playing is insane also great rock artist Free Alright Now and Humble Pie Natural Born Boogie you wont be disappointed
And that 2 guitarists! Amazing musicians...
Guitarist Allen Collins wrote the music to Freebird when he was just 17 years old, and lead-singer, songwriter, & band leader Ronnie Van Zant the lyrics when he was just 20 or 21, and to this day it remains one of the most iconic songs in rock history. The song had actually already been written for awhile when it was recorded for Skynyrd's debut album "Pronounced" in 1973. Freebird is right there at the top of the list with songs like Zepplin's Stairway to Heaven that are rock anthems that will never die. Not too shabby for a couple of high school dropouts from the wrong side(west side) of Jacksonville, Florida. Please, check out the live version of this song from Oakland Colliseum in July, 1977, just months before their ill-fated plane crash in October, 1977. It's off the hook. I think you two will really love it!!
A great reaction to a great song. Love seeing people hear it for the 1st time. You should react to the live version from Oakland 1977, 3 months before the plane crash that took 3 band members live's.
An EPIC performance.
The way you guys reacted to the solos probably should have reacted to a live performance
No probably about it - it is absolutely crucial to experience the live performance to get what this group is about.
Thank you! This song live in Oakland shows what Skynard was like in person. Awesome.
I went to one of their concerts when I was 13 and I'm 60 now the Willie Nelson picnic in Tulsa Oklahoma. 6 bands played.
Now that you guys reacted to one of the most iconic song/solo in music history i think you are ready for Van Halens Eruption and Dragonforce’s Through the fire and flames
Agreed!!!
