The thing I really like about the solo at the end is it isn't simply instrument, it is actually telling the second half of the story. The first part of the song is explaining to his girl he he needs to be free. He finally breaks it off with her, and flies free, and that is when the solo starts, that is what his freedom sounds like. That is how I see it anyway.

Had front row seats ( Milwaukee) ‘74 and to see these 3 guitars going after it was amazingly. Hard to explain what it was to see what they could do together was amazing. Some of the riffs were performed by all 3 in unison. A Southern Rock Masterpiece.
The Best Version is them playing Live in Knebworth, England in 1976. They opened for the Rolling Stones. The stage was shaped like a Big Red Tongue and Mic Jagger had told all the other bands to stay off of the tongue and that it was reserved for the Stones. During " Free Bird ", Ronnie leads the 3 guitarists down onto the tongue where they burned the place down. Mic Jagger was pissed and said L S would never open for the Stones again. When they came back to the U S, a reporter asked Ronnie why did he disobeyed Jagger's request. Ronnie replied, " I just wanted to prove the wrong band opened that day and we did ".
Imagine you are in an old school Mustang with the top down, cruisin' in a world with no cell phones, no internet, no 24 hour tv, disconnected from the world with just your friends in the car jamming to music like this, Zeppelin, The Stones, Pink Floyd, The Who, Black Sabbath etc. We were free as birds back then in our youth. Totally different world. Everything was raw and real. No digital touch ups. No auto tune, just young people with talent on instruments. Amazing simple time back then. Glad you enjoyed it. To some of us that lived it, it was a joy to see people react to this music.
Do the Oakland Colosseum performance one so you can see the crowd!! And it’s a little bit different cus there’s more solos (even w the piano 😄). You’ll love it! ❤️ 🙏🏼✌🏼the energy between the crowd and the band is *insane* and you’ll def wish you would’ve been there for it! Also there are four strings players (3 guitarists and one bassist) 🙂
I have heard this song several gazillion times, and yet I am excited to see them for the first time when they perform live on November 14 for Day 4 of the Welcome to Rockville Festival in Daytona Beach, Florida, along with Metallica and The Warning!
ONE OF THE GREATEST BANDS TO EVER DO IT! Ronnie VanZant tells a story in every song he wrote. this is one of those bands you could have their complete discography on repeat and still have people lined up. Welcome to Southern rock after this Allman Brothers is a must and i'm sure the comments will give you many of their favourite artists in the genre to carry on!!!
This song is considered their swan song, ALMOST forbidden to be covered by any artist, you rarely ever hear a band cover it since their tragic deaths because no artist has really been able to do it justice.
I love your reaction to this. It's an important test to me. This is an insanely powerful song and if it doesn't create something powerful in you, we don't have much to talk about. Look forward to more!
It took me hearing the live version a few times from One More From the Road, to grasp that the power of that outro is the rhythm section, those piano chords with the bass line doubling it. I could listen to that forever even without the guitar solos over top of it.
@@bethshadid2087 Here's one I just learned about today. Mae Axton, Hoyt Axton's mother, introduced Elvis to Col. Parker after Elvis performed in Jacksonville. She had moved to Jax in '49 with her military husband. Mae co-wrote "Heartbreak Hotel", which was a #1 hit for Elvis. Hoyt wrote "Joy To The World" ("Jerimiah was a bullfrog..."), which was a #1 for Three Dog Night. The only mother/son songwriters to each write a #1 song.
Pure southern rock right there folks.. but that stink face on that pretty lady.. priceless.. I'm glad to see younger genre reactions to music like this and those from that erra .. ya won't see sell outs and true meanings in today's music because them days wasn't no social media and market that cuts out all the true hard work musicians put into music then.
This came out the year I graduated from high school, 1973. My group of friends used to hang out in the neighborhood park in Brooklyn, NY with a circle of boom boxes (they were popular back then, some taking a dozen D batteries) and when this came on the radio we all turned them up blasting loud. I always loved this song, just because of the feel of it. I still love it after all these years. I'm glad to see younger folks enjoying the stuff from the past. "Hold On Loosely" by 38 Special is another great southern rock song you might enjoy. It doesn't have the wow factor of this song, but it's still an excellent song in my opinion.
They had 3 guitarists playing the lead licks. Thank you for helping keep the music alive. All the original members have passed on. Gary Rossington just passed a month or so ago. He was one of the founding members.
Yes on the Cleveland live version!!! Part of the timelessness of this is just the honesty and then, of course, the WTF solo that no one else could ever do as he did.
Gary Rossington, last surviving founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd has passed away at aged 71. How about a tribute reaction to the song, "I need You So"
I had a version of this song on cassette. The first part was on side 1 and I had to flip it because the guitar solos were on side 2. That was my version of "having to walk to school uphill, both ways" struggle. Ha!

I'm 73 and when I heard this song in 74 when it came out as a single I thought I caught the holy ghost and nothing has changed it still bops my head and moves me. I saw them twice and all their concerts ends with Freebird. Singer Ronnie Van Zant and one guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister were killed just a few years after. Lost out on a ton of good music from them. Only the drummer Artimus Pyle who survived the crash is living and was very heroic during the rescue in the swamps. Gary Rossington the guitarist on the slide guitar at the beginning credits him for saving his life when he was trapped under a wing almost drowning
The thing I really like about the solo at the end is it isn't simply instrument, it is actually telling the second half of the story. Love y'alls reaction to the guitars at the end. Live your channel, love your personalities, and your input . Thank you for working so hard to bring a great show with great content and brilliant genuine reactions.
Had front row seats ( Milwaukee) ‘74 and to see these 3 guitars going after it was amazingly. Hard to explain what it was to see what they could do together was amazing. Some of the riffs were performed by all 3 in unison. A Southern Rock Masterpiece.
You guys have got to see this live, it’s even more awesome watching!
Watching the live version of this from Oakland is 1977 is a MUST.
The height of southern rock is The allman bothers “tied to the whipping post” (album not live). Hold back the emotions y’all
The Best Version is them playing Live in Knebworth, England in 1976.
My favorites besides this one is Simple man, ballad of Curtis Lowe, gimme 3 steps.
This was my nephew's graduation song,it was so overwhelming, you could hear a couple thousand singing. And mouthing the guitar riffs Cooool
Asia, never ever apologize for singing. You have a beautiful voice.
I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in concert and the song Freebird as their encore and they completely went wild with that Solo
Imagine being at the concert when they played this it was awesome!
ONE OF THE GREATEST BANDS TO EVER DO IT! Ronnie VanZant tells a story in every song he wrote.
this is one of those bands you could have their complete discography on repeat and still have people lined up.
Welcome to Southern rock after this Allman Brothers is a must and i'm sure the comments will give you many of
their favourite artists in the genre to carry on!!!
This song is considered their swan song, ALMOST forbidden to be covered by any artist, you rarely ever hear a band cover it since their tragic deaths because no artist has really been able to do it justice.
I genuinely believe, at least in the southern U.S., you won't find a song that's covered more than this exact song.
Triple guitar attack 🎸🎸🎸 Welcome to the sound of Red Neck Rock n Roll GOAT Band 👏👏👏
I love your reaction to this. It's an important test to me. This is an insanely powerful song and if it doesn't create something powerful in you, we don't have much to talk about. Look forward to more!
Amazing band, hugely great songs. Saw them live 2 times. Free Bird was a party in itself. Ask anyone who was there 😁
Really loved your reaction, this was the jam in the 70’s❤️
It took me hearing the live version a few times from One More From the Road, to grasp that the power of that outro is the rhythm section, those piano chords with the bass line doubling it. I could listen to that forever even without the guitar solos over top of it.
Southern rock. Try Doobie Brothers …. Black Water. Live version is best. It’s a song that needs the crowd.
Yea Doobie Brothers for sure
Yeah...Black Water for sure....
LYNNYRD SKYNYRD, "FREE BIRD"... YOU TWO LIKE THIS. LYNNYRD SKYNYRD " FREEBIRD"... LIVE AT THE OAKLAND COLISEUM 1977... YOU"LL LOVE IT..
The amount of talent that came out of North Florida back in the day was insane.
The 904.
Yup. Maybe they'll get into some Tom Petty 😁
@@bethshadid2087 Tom took guitar lessons from none other than Don Felder in Gainesville back in the day.
@@757optim didn't know that....awesome....thanks 😊
Simple Man is the Song I Play for my Son every Year on his Birthday. He will be 45 this year. This song is a Must Hear!!!!
My son/mother dance at his wedding
That guitar solo is seriously a vibe!
Now you have to listen to “Simple Man”, pure southern rock awesomeness.
Yes on the Cleveland live version!!! Part of the timelessness of this is just the honesty and then, of course, the WTF solo that no one else could ever do as he did.
You ain't seen nothing till you've seen all 3 guitars just ripping it live in Oakland! Those boys tore it UP that day.
RIP Gary Rossington. He was a great guitarist
They were told that no one would like this song
Gary Rossington, last surviving founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd has passed away at aged 71. How about a tribute reaction to the song, "I need You So"
Such a massive iconic song from one of the greatest bands of all time. Thank you for the reaction!
I had a version of this song on cassette. The first part was on side 1 and I had to flip it because the guitar solos were on side 2.
That was my version of "having to walk to school uphill, both ways" struggle. Ha!
😂😂😂😎 the struggle was real
BJ: "I don't think there's much else you can do with a guitar."
EVH: "Hold my beer..."
Eruption, live without a net 1986...check it out if you haven't already. ✌❤
SRV might want to set his beer down too for a couple of minutes and jump into this little guitar excellence jam. RIP to both.
And when EVH and SRV are done......BUCKEDHEAD.....you two hold my beer.
EVH: “Hold my cigarette!
The way you guys reacted to the solos probably should have reacted to a live performance
No probably about it - it is absolutely crucial to experience the live performance to get what this group is about.
