Great vid - some background on the lyrics - Saiki has become much more a lyricist - 5 or 6 songs on this new album were done by her. She's explained the basis of the song, and it comes in several parts: Saiki was studying the history of storytelling and song, and esp how cultures in the past marked certain stories and songs 'forbidden'. But that with modern research and tools, we can bring those stories/songs back. And Saiki thought about - that's like meeting those artists from the past, and giving their existence and art validity. So the jazz part is the past story itself while the shadow hand and the human hand - are them trying to connect, across time, to help each other. At the same time, the room turning red and the lyrics about 'how dare you take away our story' is letting those past artists decry the leaders that made the stories forbidden in the first place. Then the room turns back to normal, and we're back in present day. But then she considered - that means their music can do the same - reach across time, and maybe help someone 'hundreds of years' from now- and that just amazes her. But she also recognizes, that it's their fans that will help carry their music into the future (the part with the second 'let me hear your voice' - and it's the sound of the audience at a concert). Finally, the song itself was written by Kanami at a time when she had lost a close relative, and was using her music to think about 'what a life is and the experiences', and doing it through song. So you have the wildly different passages, but all tied to the same melody. Saiki applied her ideas about the 'forbidden tales' to Kanami's musical exploration of a life's experiences, and you get 'Forbidden Tale'. A masterpiece that celebrates Saiki's true ascendance as a amazing lyricist.
The lyrics (by Saiki) are about their music living on and building legacy that endures, and also from Saiki finding out about old stories that were forbidden to be read before now coming to light. The music was envisioned by Kanami after a close death, and her wondering about the meaning of life.
The image of Saiki lying on the grass looking at the sky fits in with her inspiration for the lyrics on a personal level. She said in an interview that she loved to go into the mountains to lay on the grass and stare at the sky while listening to one of her favourite songs - Island In The Sun by Weezer
Those who know more than I, have said that this song is related to the passing of Kanami's Grandmother. So, much that you surmised was actually correct, about a the end of a close relationship..
You 2 are very smart with the lyrics . I learn a lot listening to both of you. Keep up the great work .The lead guitar Kanami lost her grandmother during the making of this album .
I love your reactions guys!!!! Please keep them coming. I especially love your Band Maid reactions. A wonderful song filled with romantic angst and mystery.
Nice reaction and good to see you detectives at work...trying to decifer the lyric meaning. I like someone's comment, elswhere, saying that many fans would like Kanami to wtite like a 12 minute song...and concluding that she's done that here...she just crammed it into 4 and a half minutes! 😁 👍🤘🤘🤘
Oh man... now I wonder how Saiki-san performed this song LIVE. Whether it was working the crowd or melancholic just how the song is written. Now, it makes me want to rewatch fancams of the LIVE concerts I've been to of them just to see how Saiki-san was performing. This is another nuance I am looking forward to in the future. Thanks guys!
Great reaction! For a couple of filmmakers, there are a LOT of official videos that you may want to check out, so we can get your take on the videos themselves. Thrill, Real Existence, The Non--Fiction Days, Yolo, Afterlife, Warning (not Show Them with "The Warning"), etc. Thanks for continuing to react to the Maids! Can't wait for more!
Itai, some time ago you said you would like to hear Miku sing solo. I've looked on your channel and Band Maid list and I don't see a reaction to the Miku solo song. Did I miss the reaction? Do you still want to react to Miku singing solo? If so I'll buy a cup of coffee for your reaction to Miku.
The songs already released earlier in the year are just Band-Maid awesomesauce! The six new songs are so tightly integrated and complex, it's going to take a Tokyo minute to assimilate. But I already love Forbidden Tale, and especially The One. 😉🤘 btw - We should all wish a "Good Luck" to Band-Maid's new self-run management company: Maidit, Co., LTD! Will they managing other bands, boost Cluppo and Maiko projects, or tour more internationally? Or maybe they will expand their business interest to other sectors of the music biz outside of Band-Maid. I believe Kanami wants to get more into composing, scoring and production. And as for Miku and Saiki, the sky's the limit for what they'll want to do in merch, fashion and art, etc.. Thx, Asaf & Itai!
Ok fellas, the best most accurate explanation of song is the top comment in the MV's comment section. But here is a brief synopsis; Kanami had experienced the loss of her grandmother and was contemplating larger life issues. Saiki had written the lyrics not aware of that but wrote lyrics based on what the music said to her. Her lyrics tell the about the connection of musical artists being connected to each other over time. Influencing each in and endless timeline. Band-Maid being influenced by previous artists and in turn influencing future as yet unknown future artists with what they've created. Which makes them all connected. ❤️💛💚💙💜
I have a hunch that the real unknowable story is saiki's relationship with kanami. We know there is something particularly passionate there but we also have a strong feeling that it does not conform to any pattern we can push it into. This song is a total creation of the two of them and we know that kanami has had an open crush on saiki for years and they are extremely affectionate on stage, especially on the huge gig at yokohama last year, before they displayed it far more abroad and dialled it back at home. Kanami talks about them "dating" on Instagram but I don't think they are necessarily in a relationship that could be shoved into a western model. It's certainly not just a performative tease. And it has to be set in the context of all of them having a passionate love for each other, although they do actually live spread around the place. "Some people say we are so close that it's creepy" saiki has said recently. Meaning the whole band. So maybe she's also referring to the five of them. They spend just about the whole of a tour together on the bus and sometimes just sleep in a pile on the star bed. We'll never know what there is between them except that it's extremely intense but also disciplined. They're like something out of an anime, destined to slay demons together since the beginning of time. I think they feel this themselves. Back during covid they really were super heroes for a lot of older rock fans who were able to see great hope in them without the tragic downside we expect from "golden age" heroes. I think this is the forbidden tale, we can see it's surface but will never know it's depth.

Arigato.😌🙏
Masterful songwriting from Kanami 🔥❤️ Amazing lyrics from Saiki 🔥❤️ They are on their own level. Greatest band of our time 🔥❤️
Thank you for a great observation about Saiki's different energy. It's serious and reflective too.
Guys THANK YOU for this wonderful reaction
Now that Band-Maid is on their own, Independent “MAIDIT Co., LTD.” so expect more and better.

It's a song of yearning. Saiki nailed it.

Where can I find the fancam?
@ ahh, just search on UA-cam. I’ve been to both Chicago shows and Detroit. All of these gigs have videos filmed by a concert goer.
@ So that means there's no fancam of This Song...😔
I can't wait to here the live version, especially when they say "Let me here your voice."
Hi from france:
In this MV Saiki is beautifully filmed, sublimated in the image...

Thanks so much nice reaction!

I think everyone would enjoy Maid music even more if they (and you two) heard it in stereo rather than mono. 🤘😉
You can interpret the story in your own way. It can be about anyone, anything, or involving all of us. 😉
