In my opinion this song is far away from being something "corny" as in the derogatory sense this word is used nowadays or "having no value", I feel like certain Metal elitists have a problem with this song because they can't consider it "mature", but being a child is the key for becoming mature in the first place, if you think that a "simple" happy song performed by these girls who are very professional, and responsible about what they do can't have any significant value, I'd say it's because you lost your inner child-like spirit, you're missing the point of the song by trying to overcritic its value, rather than feeling the song. This is the song that brings happiness to a genre that is considered by many just pure hate, despair, and sadness, almost like a reflection of the frustration we endure in this world as it can have that endless sense of cruelty, and some people just can think about that, and are stuck with these feelings, so when you show them a song like that you break the chains of pain from these people, where they now have to listen to something that takes them away from their wishful self deprecation. I just love listening to the drums and the hi-hat accents in Gimme Chocolate!! so much! Like being hit with that genuine, wholeheartedly nice feeling that never ceases, and when the song ends you're satisfied for having felt that energy. I was pretty confused with your intro about watching some older Babymetal and then this version came up. You have to try and imagine 2014 when almost nobody in the West had even heard of Babymetal. Put youself in that headset then picture this balls to the walls metal banger comes on and THEN three incredibly adorable japanese teens of 14, 16 and 14 come out singing in total kawaii j-pop vocals this song. It has over 200,000,000 views. The reason a lot of us aren't excited when this song is the first song for Babymetal is for the very reason it has worked so well for Babymetal. To an unknowing, western ear the whole WTF factor of that original made it go viral and also for seemingly forever to some people made Babymetal a gimmick band. Which obviously they are not. Loved your comments as always. But, I say but again. Though I think in most cases what you Asaf commented about contractual agreements etc were maybe with Babymetal not completely on the mark. "Gimme Chocolate" was their breakout release way back in 2013. It was key in them being invited to the 2014 Sonisphere Metal Festival in England. Also as the song's popularity grew, Sonisphere notified Babymetal they were being moved to the Main Stage. They were the first band on Sunday and in 30 minutes they upset the entire Metal World. The first interviews by the Metal press are fun. They really had a hard time dealing with these unbelievably cute Teenagers, who were more professional than many of the members of the older bands. 💕 ⚡ 🍑 / 🍫 💝 'Gimme Chocolate!!' definitely has one of their "poppier" choruses. Those blast beats though. : ) They have been joined on stage for this song by members of Korn, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and DragonForce. It's the only song they've performed on TV in the USA (The Colbert Show), and it's racked up over 200 million views on UA-cam. There was a huge surge of interest when the original music video for this song was posted, but they first went viral with the music video for 'Doki Doki ☆ Morning' in 2011.

I don't recommend their 2013 performance as a first time reaction anymore. Although this is a far newer performance i still don't recommend it. Ladies are celebrating almost their 16th anniversary next year. So a lot to cover but to be fair. This was many people's first reaction but its kinda an afterthought now i think. Still good reaction though!! Their latest is a collaboration with BloodyWood. Wait, as say what lol. Ladies also appeared in Heaver Trip recently. This was my first experience with Babymetal. It's what got me hooked. But this was back in 2014. Babymetal has changed a lot in the past 10 plus years. Their music has become much more progressive and intricate. I think fans are so impressed by what they have become, that they would rather show them the "mature" side rather than the silly side of Babymetal. I, on the other hand, feel that if Gimme Chocolate was what got ME hooked, why wouldn't it still work today on new fans. It's quintessential Babymetal.

It may have some deeper meaning but most of us don't think so. There is a funny interview where the interviewer keeps wanting to relate it to eating disorders and Su just looks confused and keeps saying "no it is just about eating chocolate and worrying about your weight and complexion".

Thanks again guys. I think I gave you a choice of the official MV or this performance. As mentioned in other comments it is not so much the song as the original MV that fans don't necessarily like being the first Babymetal that people see. Given that it is studio audio dubbed over a live performance and that even the live performance had the music on track it can give the impression that Babymetal is just a lip synching joke band. So I tend to like the later, more real performances like this one. Also Babymetal will be doing three shows in Australia next year (Sidney, Melbourne and Brisbane I think). You should try and check them out Itai.

As for recommending this as someone's first time hearing BABYMETAL, this performance (or any other live) would be fine, it is that official MV without the live audio that has been known to put people off - it is great fun at live shows when they play this.🍫🍫🍫

I think the hesitation on recommending this song to new viewers is specifically referring to the 2013 (Legend 1997) performance that went viral years ago. The girls were young, wearing red tutus, and the Babybones were 'backing' instead of the Kamis. Now that they're older it doesn't provoke the same "WTF am I watching?" effect of the original.

It's not the song that isn't recommended as a first listen as it is excellent. It is the official MV from 2013 which may put people off. It appears live but it's a studio recording dubbed over images of a live show and it does come over as a bit cheesy. You got a good live version here.

Hey guys, nice reaction as always. Being musically illiterate and simply knowing what I like or don't like. This was a puzzling one for me. I like the lead singer's voice and think she could sing in multiple genres (also wonder what her normal voice/accent is like). So yeah, her voice holds it for me, but as a complete package . . you know how something feels incomplete? Not bad by any means and I guess what I'm clumsily (and hopefully not rudely) saying is the performance of the song has more potential?

I listened to this band's most recent EP a few months ago. I think they have only released two EPs so far, and I have not yet listened to the first one. After listening to their recent EP, I watched a couple of music videos, including this one. I think the song is good, but not particularly memorable. The thing that really stood out about the video was what was missing - a drummer. I looked up the band online and discovered that they do not have a full time drummer. I know that they have been on tour, but I don't know if the tour drummer is the same as the studio session drummer. I will be interested to hear how they sound when they become a complete band. I do recall the the vocalist, Emma is from France while the guitarists are Italian and the band is based in Italy. I also recall that Emma discovered her desire to be a metal vocalist after listening the Tarja era Nightwish. I certainly understand how Tarja Turunen and early Nightwish music would inspire a young female vocalist.

I've heard their mosh pits called Mosh'sh pits, because they're *like* a Mosh pit, but different, kinder, helpful. If someone falls, the others help them back up. Just like the girls themselves.

As others have said, their newest single, "Brainwash" is even heavier and harder than this! The Hazuki/Hara-chan songwriting combo seem to have gone to the heavy, aggressive side of the force. "G.O.D" "Progress" and now "Brainwash" are some of the best riffing they've done so far I think.
