      I have a similar foot position as the guy in the Squat F*****y Checklist part of the video (I do point my toes out though). I have been free weight squatting for 2 weeks, and I use that foot position (with low bar) so that I can get super deep, below parallel. Long femurs, poor ankle mobility, and no stable heel elevation devices.
      For these, reasons, is that foot position a good choice for me?

    1) Lift anywhere near my max on compound movements where failing could result in a shitload of weight crashing down on my body.
    2) Use clamps/collars so I can't dump the weight.

    • @adamlucas4753
      @adamlucas4753 2 дні тому +5

      Again, people have been doing things like hoisting engines and loading beams to raise barns for generations. You can do it alone, even with collars, you just make sure that, at the bottom position, with the weight at rest, it's not at a height you can't get out of. Even for Joe's situation, you slowly lower into a full squat, dump the weights a couple inches onto the pins and walk away. That's why the rack has the pin holes every inch or so.

      started lifting last march and always did my 1rm attempts solo with safeties and clips. no reason not to use safeties and clips.

      @@Cookiekeks Usually if you fail a rep it's not like you totally lose control over the weight (like you would if you put on 20kg more than your 1 rep max and then immediately crumble). I don't lift very heavy either, but I think if you are strong enough to do a couple of reps with the weight, you can easily push it to the hips, no matter how much it is.

      Even when I was getting real heavy I still did this a couple times. Your arms don't immediately collapse, you have time to move the bar forward. Yep, I've failed with 115kg (basically 252lbs) and simply moved it to my hips, sat up, stood up, and placed it on the ground. Absolutely no need to throw the weights around unless you're doing a weight you had no business trying in the first place.

    I'm a huge fan of padding the squat bar. Or hip thrust bar. I'm a skinny ol' lady though, so a bar sitting on bones really hurts. That said, all these videos are the reason people need to have a couple sessions with a coach to show them the right way of doing shit. I absolutely love all the help my coach has given and really love not being injured. Sometimes you THINK you have the right motion and don't notice you push more with one leg or tilt your hips in one way or another.

    I never understood the squat spotter in the back. I was always trained that when you're in trouble to throw off the weight and run forward. Spotting a squat makes no sense.

    • @kennethmassa6682
      @kennethmassa6682 2 дні тому

      It can damage the bar, at that kind of weight it can definitely damage the floor, plus even running forward there's always some chance to hurt yourself. Spotter also lets you push past that last rep like any other exercise. At this kind of weight there really should have been side spotters like Mike said.

    • @nickjohnston3882
      @nickjohnston3882 2 дні тому

      @kennethmassa6682 Side spotters are a reasonablesolution, but when it comes to life-or-death situations or potential harm to your body, nothing else matters and the way I describe is the correct method. As Mark Rippetoe advocates, focus on incremental improvement. You don’t need to crush your PR every time; adding just 2.5 lbs per side is still effective progress.

    If I had to make a guess, I'd say the snapped bar was welded by the owner as there was some wrap around the center of it. Welds don't hold up to bending, especially a butt weld which is what I would expect an amateur to use.
