I never understood the squat spotter in the back. I was always trained that when you're in trouble to throw off the weight and run forward. Spotting a squat makes no sense.
It can damage the bar, at that kind of weight it can definitely damage the floor, plus even running forward there's always some chance to hurt yourself. Spotter also lets you push past that last rep like any other exercise. At this kind of weight there really should have been side spotters like Mike said.
@kennethmassa6682 Side spotters are a reasonablesolution, but when it comes to life-or-death situations or potential harm to your body, nothing else matters and the way I describe is the correct method. As Mark Rippetoe advocates, focus on incremental improvement. You don’t need to crush your PR every time; adding just 2.5 lbs per side is still effective progress.
the reason it has a downfall is the unnecessary long explanations with big formats, the older videos with small jokingly criticque on them was the top content. Also you reacting to these people fails gives us more knowledge than celebrity. so thank you!
If I had to make a guess, I'd say the snapped bar was welded by the owner as there was some wrap around the center of it. Welds don't hold up to bending, especially a butt weld which is what I would expect an amateur to use.
I was wondering when we would get a gym fails episode lol! I actually really enjoy this content and I think you add a lot of context and insight then a random compilation
I have been watching Dr Israetel's videos for over a year now. I have learnt so much from him and drastically improved my physique, lost a couple of inches of fat around the waistline and gained a lot of muscle, added creatine and protein to my diet as a vegan and it really did the trick along with slow eccentric and loading in the bottom stretch. I started getting anxiety attacks 4 months ago, I now watch one of his videos when I am in the process of recovering from them. I don't know why but his bad humour helps me breathe again. Shoutout Dr Mike. Love you (no homo)
LOL... The "My life has come to a low point definitely got my attention" and the reveal got a good laugh out of me. Again, the barbell on the neck, I was going "WTF, TO THE SIDE dummy! To the siiiide" then you said it, and laughter ensued. Understanding physics... Kind of a super power. Hahaha Holy shit! Respect for Joe Sullivan! That moment he said "Fuck!" Hahahaha
I can't get over the guy who kicked the bar. I've been training since the mid 80s and gyms were different back in the day. We were and are gym brothers. We respect one another and treat each other with dignity. There are better ways, obviously to approach all situations than confrontational violence.
Reacting to gym fails is a tad tedious from almost everyone, but at least you are pausing, reviewing, and commentating on the clip. Most folks will just show a two second clip, and make some baffled sound while showing another dozen clips where there is almost no setup and is impossible to see what happens. I want you doing exactly what you did in this.
I don't mind clanking weigts. What really grind my gears is the people who lift wayy to heavy and start basically screaming while slamming weights. A light grunt is ok but why screaming?
Dr Mike’s like Deadpool in the UA-cam fitness community! And in this video, he’s just trying to do things that Colosus told him to! 😂😂 While the content was funny, it was funnier to see Dr. Mike holding back his savagery! 😂🫡
I really like the self-delete grip on pressing, even with a barbell. It feels more comfortable on my wrist, it feels like I have more “meat” of my hand under it. I’m not benching 5 plates, but maybe I’ll start working regular grip back on
As a person that has wrestled & been boxing for over 20 years, that moment when a guy puts a foot on my deadlifting bar is the moment ALL of us that have been in combat sports is waiting for 😅
This is the only bench press event that I'm aware of, involving a college athlete. No, USC athlete Stafon Johnson did not die after a barbell fell on his neck, but he did suffer a life-threatening injury. In 2009, Johnson was a running back for the University of Southern California (USC) when he was injured during a bench press. The barbell fell on his throat, crushing his vocal cords and adam's apple.
Lmaooo when he’s like “you never know where the fuckery is about to happen” and then a fucking car crashes through the window like😂😭 how has no one pointed out this irony yet hahahahahahaha

When I fail a rep at benchpressing, I just push the bar down to my hip and then I sit up. Always worked so far... 😀
Same. I'm pretty weak and never lifted heavy, I wonder if it only works because of that
We call it "The Roll of Shame."
Super easy way to save yourself when your legs are stronger than your upper body.
@@Cookiekeks Usually if you fail a rep it's not like you totally lose control over the weight (like you would if you put on 20kg more than your 1 rep max and then immediately crumble). I don't lift very heavy either, but I think if you are strong enough to do a couple of reps with the weight, you can easily push it to the hips, no matter how much it is.
Even when I was getting real heavy I still did this a couple times. Your arms don't immediately collapse, you have time to move the bar forward. You might fuck yourself up below the waist and it's gonna make a ton of noise so everyone will see your stupidity, but like they said in the video, I'm alive without permanent damage
Yep, I've failed with 115kg (basically 252lbs) and simply moved it to my hips, sat up, stood up, and placed it on the ground. Absolutely no need to throw the weights around unless you're doing a weight you had no business trying in the first place.
14:35 Sexworker grip?
Suicide grip… 😐
Socialism grip (c)
sternum annihilator grip
Sphincter grip
😂
bending a bar like joe did is one of my lifetime goals
It should not be. That messed him up bad. Bulged some discs and nerve damage.
@@Sparta1984 as someone who has blown 3 different disks and shredded more tendons that i care to count i will agree. Do not aspire to do what your idols do because they are the 1% of superhumans. Aspire to be the best YOU can be and live along pain free life
that requires going to gym
Get a bar from temu could probably do it at about 200 lbs
@@wileecoyote5749 which i do
Welp finally gave in and purchased the Hypertrophy app!? I just started my 4th 6 month meso and had been tracking my workouts via text drafts. And all of January is gone. 😭 I figured I'd learned so much from the channel for free and because of my success down ~50# and stronger, fitter. I deserved a treat
17:37 bro said all that without pointing out his stick legs 😂
He did though but in a subtle way.
"Scott, how old is Callisto?" is my favorite question I've heard you ask Scott. Scott is apparently an AI who can answer questions about literally anything in the world including the age of your sister's cat
I'm a huge fan of padding the squat bar. Or hip thrust bar. I'm a skinny ol' lady though, so a bar sitting on bones really hurts. That said, all these videos are the reason people need to have a couple sessions with a coach to show them the right way of doing shit. I absolutely love all the help my coach has given and really love not being injured. Sometimes you THINK you have the right motion and don't notice you push more with one leg or tilt your hips in one way or another.
I think the difference is you're not loading up 545lbs to do 1/16th reps
Agreed. I'm not even skinny but ever since I tried the pad I have been loving it.
also you should be training your back
@ Very true! I actually squat my squats 🤣
I could watch these all day with Mikes reactions
More of these reaction videos please, really adds to the variety on this channel. Love it haha.
would love to see more of these with Mike seeing them for the first time. really funny stuff, hope to see more when Mike recovers
I ve been watching this guy for a a couple of months now. He has good content, he is clear and consistent - I like that. I also get the impression that he’s not trying to sell me some voodoo miracle grow potion crap, I appreciate that.
I think we need an update on that cat every video now 😂
I really enjoy the Comedic Genius this man clearly posseses :D Dr. Mike please keep being you.

Great video Mike! I actually find it really insightful if you would do more form check videos one after another. Your sense of humor + knowledge make it a must watch for me!
When I was in college one of our TAC Officers (captain infantry) was doing pec-deck. The cable snapped and both metal arms slammed into his skull. Knocking him out cold. He was also gushing blood from his forehead. I mean an open faucet of blood.
He later went on to try to get into Delta Force (The Unit). Not sure if he made selection, but he was a badass!
Shout out Capt Runge!!
sheessh this is why I only use dumbbells, those barbells scares me. Love your content. Among the best influencer for introducing newbie like me into lifting.
I avoid this crazyness by never training to failure. These days I don't train heavy, it's not worth it for me as an older lifter.
Hey Dr. Mike, could you do a video for recovering after an acl injury and the proper steps to ensure success in muscle connection and growth? Im trying to keep a consistent pace with my knee rehab nut it feels like it is taking forever!! Thank you!
17:01 I gotta use the pad cause the bar bruises the top of my spine but everytime I do I feel like a WEENIE 😂
19:04 ...the amount of expletives within a short period of time has to be a record for the RP channel
9:15 this is what happens when you remove the threat of physical violence for being an asshole from society. You get more aggressive assholes because they have no fear of consequences.
What are you talking about bro
@@Solaxer You don't open carry in the gym bro?
@@Solaxercan you read?
12:59 Got fired, doxed and ended up doing Polish hostage thing with no hostages surviving.
Hey Mike, if you read this - for future reference - youtube is fine with saying "Self unalive grip" for that guy benching with the - - not so clever grip.
Thumbless?
Rewatched it... he has thumbs
@
Yeah he tucked his thumbs and got into a collision with a heavy bench bar.
Love the content as usual. Got the protein shake ready, time to watch.
1:21 For people who want to traumatize themselves for some reason: there is a video around there of a chinese guy called Zhang who got into THIS EXACT scenario, but he didn´t make it.
Mike never fails to crack me up. Every. Single. Video.💀😂
The music of that first fail was the best part. Big swing and miss not including original sound of the video.
Imagine almost dying while the Isley brothers playing in the background
the reason it has a downfall is the unnecessary long explanations with big formats, the older videos with small jokingly criticque on them was the top content. Also you reacting to these people fails gives us more knowledge than celebrity. so thank you!
Just do dumbbells if you don't have a spotter. Then you have virtually 0% chance to die.
Love you (no homo)
we’re lamenting over gym fail reactions now? haven’t there been two (or more) “protein bar taste tests” videos? they’re all fun to watch
Im happy with these type of videos, educational and entertaining, keep em coming
Slingshot+s-word grip, my boy Darwin was done dirty by the outcome of that clip
Hahaha
Holy shit! Respect for Joe Sullivan! That moment he said "Fuck!" Hahahaha
0:25 it’s your destiny
I can't get over the guy who kicked the bar. I've been training since the mid 80s and gyms were different back in the day. We were and are gym brothers. We respect one another and treat each other with dignity. There are better ways, obviously to approach all situations than confrontational violence.
No Matthias Steiner :(
Only reason i came here
Probably just clickbait thumbnail for views. I think Mike knows enough about weightlifting to know that Steiner's story is incredible.
The best part about the first clip is there was smooth RnB or soul (can’t remember exactly) playing as he was fighting for his life, what a way to go!
10:51 pretty much my opinion on Americans
Can you guys discuss the concerns about heavy metals in protein powder? Which protein powder companies have the most/least heavy metal contaminates?
7:25 bro its 2025 already 😂
It was probably filmed in December
You really lost it before thinking that "hmm maybe this isn't live..."
13:09 thank you.
Who else stopped watching before the leg press video. I’m to squeamish to see a guy kiss his heels
Thank you for letting me know where should I watch
I don't mind clanking weigts. What really grind my gears is the people who lift wayy to heavy and start basically screaming while slamming weights. A light grunt is ok but why screaming?
Dr Mike’s like Deadpool in the UA-cam fitness community! And in this video, he’s just trying to do things that Colosus told him to! 😂😂
While the content was funny, it was funnier to see Dr. Mike holding back his savagery! 😂🫡
"At the Copa, Copa Cabana..." sing it Mike!
I can tell you don't enjoy doing this, but I sure enjoyed watching it.
I really like the self-delete grip on pressing, even with a barbell.
It feels more comfortable on my wrist, it feels like I have more “meat” of my hand under it. I’m not benching 5 plates, but maybe I’ll start working regular grip back on
As a person that has wrestled & been boxing for over 20 years, that moment when a guy puts a foot on my deadlifting bar is the moment ALL of us that have been in combat sports is waiting for 😅
Love all your content Dr. Mike, but more of this please.
High Level Dr. Mike Core in this video. Love it
Oh this made my day… I know this is not your favourite type of video but, you killed it Dr. Mike😂❤
Gym fails are always fun to watch
Thanks for sharing !
God damn, Mike. You continue to make me laugh out loud hysterically. This is the best way to learn!
7:34 yeah side spotting sounds like a bad idea when the bar snaps 🤣
This is the only bench press event that I'm aware of, involving a college athlete. No, USC athlete Stafon Johnson did not die after a barbell fell on his neck, but he did suffer a life-threatening injury. In 2009, Johnson was a running back for the University of Southern California (USC) when he was injured during a bench press. The barbell fell on his throat, crushing his vocal cords and adam's apple.
You guys need to do an entire episode where Mike reviews Dr. Mike memes. I'm sure you can find hundreds of them.
This video is astoundingly funny dude.😂 I haven’t laughed this loudly in weeks.
You’re still the Goat when it comes to fitness content.
you don't wanna do this content, i don't wanna watch it either, but together this is fucking hilarious 😂
Lmaooo when he’s like “you never know where the fuckery is about to happen” and then a fucking car crashes through the window like😂😭 how has no one pointed out this irony yet hahahahahahaha
I’ve had chronic upper trap pain for over a decade, I proudly use a pad (preferably quite a thin one) on my back squats
6:00 Haha.....run over and help......how? For 99% of fellow gym-goers, It's like asking a small child to spot you.
I've never witnessed a Gym Fail in person.
