Ah I love when ellen asked Constance where she’s from and she responded with “Richmond Virginia” with a huge smile :)
Jane Chu she’s Asian originally
Suzy Ghanem And Ellen is European originally 🤷🏾 America is a land of immigrants.
Yes, but I believe Ellen was genuinely just asking where she was from (city/state/country/whatever). You can never assume someone is from and she's a talk-show host so guests come from all over.
Aye! I'm from Virginia too!
Jane Chu And you can hear a bit of disbelief/surprise in Ellen's voice when she replies with, "Richmond, Virginia?!"
constance wu is a QUEEN she had the best answer to ellen’s stupid question and i love her
She’s trying too hard to be sexy tho...
The whole Fresh Off the Boat fanbase : *DISAGREE*
@@lindamli5092 trying too hard?.... I don’t think she has to try at all😳
She look like Chloe Bennet if she's fully asian
I noticed she ddnt want to look @ Ellen after she asked about where she was from and then acted surprised @ the answer. Like East Asians don't settle in places in the U.S. aside from California & New York City. Instead, she chose to keep her gaze on her costar bc you could tell he brought her comfort and calmness.
I feel like this interview started off bad when Ellen showed shirtless photos of the guy and then gave him most of the attention and ended with asking Constance where she’s from... could’ve been handled much better.
dreams yup not a good one
@Tong Zou She's alway objectifying men. You could tell Henry was comfortable when those photos were shown.
i agree!
@Tong Zou In the adult world, we call this false symetry.
V
He proudly said “I am Iban from Sarawak Malaysia...half Malaysian and half British”.. 👏👏👏
Awesome
Ok
Really Proud♥️
So proud of him 💕🇲🇾
Proud to be dayak
I'm not Asian but I'm in love with the movie! The movie isn't just limited to the people it centers and can be enjoyed by anyone. When I told one of my friends (who isn't Asian) that I was planning to see the movie, they were like "Ummmm why?" And surprisingly I got the same response when I told my other friend (who *is* asian). This movie isn't limited to anyone. Go see it!!!
THEIR LOSS!
So happy to see the movie open in the number one spot at the box office. I'm really looking forward to seeing it.
No one said it’s limited to a certain audience lol ur friend is just odd to say tht
I agree 100%
James Howell : The movie was so relatable as an Asian-American
I saw a number of non-Asians in the movie theatre.
Very happy for the support!
Henry's deliciousness has no bounds. His wife is a VERY lucky woman.
victrola2007 he is also a very lucky man cuz his wife is just as gorgeous!
Henry and his wife both are gorgeous
victrola2007 haha I love your statement lol
I am a straight guy and I approved
I know! I know
The right question to ask is not “where are you from?”, but “what is your ethnic background?”. Don’t be surprised if someone gives you an answer you weren’t expecting when you’re asking the wrong question.
Kien Luu this ☝🏼👏🏼
EXACTLY! I hate when they ask such a vague dumb question and then proceed to ARGUE with you about YOUR life when you give them not the answer they wanted to hear but the answer YOU felt was most appropriate. One time a moron dared to say that I was "hiding" or "trying to deny" that I'm Chinese. Another time an idiot was telling ME what I should say - he said if my family is Chinese then I should say I'm Chinese. The audacity of these stupid ignorant uncultured assholes...
Yeah!! I really really hate that 'Where are you from?" question. So usually I answered: I was born on earth like you! I ve been living in 4 different continents, in many different cities in each! I have one of European citizenship, but my heart goes everywhere every places and countries I had lived before. People... really, get over that typical question. That is so f*ck*ng stupid and ignorant. Even with any certain ethnical background I was born with, I ve been growing and had influenced by so many cultures I lived in. Humanity, that s the only race I belong! And nowadays there are more and more people like me.
well usually when people ask your ethnicity, they're already know where you're from. If people suddenly ask a Malaysian their ethnicity, you will be surprised to know that they're chinese-indian, ibanese or even kadazanese but not a malay, which lead again to the question, where you are from?
I usually say "originally from" 🙁
"I'm Iban." I think that's probably the first time those words are ever uttered in an American TV show haha..
She is the actress from fresh off the boat(tv show) ! Is there any one watced it like me ??!😅
She was so funny in that show
No. NO ONE WATCHES THAT SHOW EXCEPT YOU.
I realized that. I love it.
Jessica Huang !!
I really liked tht show!! Loved her on it especially!!
Call me petty but I love how Constance answered that where are you from question. Ellen, maybe we should start asking white people where they’re from since the only true Americans are Native Americans.
The thing is, people DO ask that of white Americans and most of us do not get offended or frustrated by it because we understand that they are simply asking a question similar to what town do you live in. So we answer things like Norway, Germany, Russia, England, France, Poland, etc etc etc and then they say oh really, I wouldn't have guessed that, and then we laugh or say where are YOU from and on and on and on, but nobody gets all butthurt over it. You know, if you try really hard, it's possible to get offended by just about anything someone says to you.
Telling people you are American really doesn't give too much information about yourself and that is why people will ask you where is your family from or what is your origin. You need to be more specific if you are Italian American, Greek American, Irish American, Chinese American, Korean America, Nigerian American... So it's best to tell people you are American and your family is Chinese. Nothing wrong with people asking about your origin. I don't understand why Asian people get so offended when people ask about their origin. When I get to know friends I always ask them where is their family from and they have no problem telling me they are Italians. So Asian people need to chill out.
The irony in thinking that because a person has white skin does not mean they don't come from different cultures. If you think white people only ask coloured people where they are from you are sorely mistaken.
And it's the fact that basically all Americans are originated from other countries except for the Native American Indians. So telling people you are American when you are clearly not American Native Indian would require you to give more information in order for people to have a better understanding of your family background. Usually the first answer would be I was born and raised in Seattle, USA. The second answer would be my family is Italian so we are Italian Americans.
You are being unfair. That was a genuine question. I do ask my white colleagues where are they from the first time we met. There is nothing wrong about that. Not everything has to be put into politically correct context, it is immature and annoying, just be genuine.
He's so proud of his Sarawak's heritage...
The audience barely laughed at their comments like they would usually do with other guests and didn't show much interest in a fully Asian film.. Shows that the racism isn't fully extinguished yet, after all these years.
Cassandra Anne or that the actors Weren't energetic
Milena Clark if someone as boring as Johnny depp during interviews gets a lot of cheer and applauded and laughters, it’s not the lack of energy. Smh.
The whole interview was awkward. Ellen focused so much in the beginning on the actor and left out the actress. She was not like she's usually with other guests
I loved the books, can’t wait to see the movie and am truly happy as a Malay for the representation it gives. But they were really boring...
Cassandra Anne Exactly what i thought :/
why is the atmosphere is so.....gloomy?? did you guys feel that too? or is it because of something else....i watch Ellen often but this time feels different
it's the way she handled the interview. It made everyone feel very awkward.
alibaba23100 they’re obviously nervous being on the show and ellen made the whole interview very awkward and uncomfortable.
Maybe she's not used to meeting Asians.
alibaba23100 ... no pretty strong. But they don't like to "Express" themselves to the public. So they say not much and keep it non opinionated.
Not because they are asians..but because they are new and not famous as aishwarya..michelle yeoh..syai gangnam...they are all from asian...
"I'm Iban" and I flipped the fuck out like that's probably the first time Ellen heard of our races. She probs don't even know where Sarawak is.
But my mom's reaction was meh, she was like "I've seen that man on tv a lot."
Queen Ugh, first time I heard that too. So time to go google it lol. EDIT: Ah so half malaysian half british.
@Queen KAN RINDU NINGA (thats how Iban sounds :) )
So proud!
I thought he said 一半 lol.
HabituallyObsessed how could he said 'I'm half'? Makes no sense
"where are you from?" wtf.....
fifth estate where's the food?
1:25 I'm IBAN..
Many of my ABC friends have been asked this kind of questions. Maybe Ellen is expecting an answer just like “I’m originally from China or Malaysia or India or japan or Korea”
Actually, Wu's parents are come from Taiwan.
Malaysia (a land full of gold), now "you know who" stole them and now "you know who" have become the most big boss country in the world. Look history, don't forget the diamond also (Africa)
I’m not Asian ,But Yaaaaaay this makes me so happy I’m glad to see more Asian representation in the media ; especially an All Asian cast. Mayn it’s 2018 for god-sakes it’s a shame it took this long. GO POCs!!
Rowan Abdelbagi crouching tiger hidden dragon was an all Asian movie.
Seoul Searching is an all Asian movie in 2015
Rowan Abdelbagi same!!!!
I hope next time they cast a full Asian man not someone that's half and half.
*All Asian HOLLYWOOD movie*
Finally, I heard the word 'Iban' and 'Sarawak' on a talk show! At least we're making some good progress here yeah!
Bad questions = bad interview/bad audience
exactly!!
"Where are you from?"
"Richmond, VA"
I love Ellen so much but this is *NOT* it, she could have done better or she must be having a bad day.
She discriminates against her guests based solely on their racial background. Showing favor to her Caucasian & African American guests & regularly slighting her Latino & Asian American ones. She's one of those idiots who think "America" is only blck & whte, despite both Latinos & Asians having history here. They are fearful of a colorful country.🌎~
HIS ACCENT IS EVERYTHING
Ellen.... not the “where are you from” question... good on you Constance.
Warrantedspeaker that was so awkward... idk what ellen was thinking
because white people always assume anyone of color is not born/raised in the US. it's lowkey racist.
Raisa Shams nah ellen should have known this fact earlier on
Well the movie title says they are Asian.... 🙄
The people who laughed in the audience thought just like you. It was a straight forward question. Not like she asked "What kind of Asian are you?"
I feel uncomfortable seeing people speculating all these “theories” about them liking each other since the guy already have a WIFE. PLEASE PEOPLE. have some respect to the guy’s private life. Imagine what his wife must be feeling. Dang.
but they kinda remember anniston vs joile, it does happen,
"And Constance, where you from?"
"Westmont, Virginia"
I was like, YAS!😂
Richmond
Henry Goulding! Making all of us Ibans & Sarawakians proud! 💕💕
Now I can have children and they can see Asian Americans on tv and in movies.
Hopefully somewhere down the line, whites will cast Asians as well.
It has been a struggle. #crazypoorasian #proudasian
Ivy Yang what about south asians ???????
David James I’m rooting for them too. They don’t look like me, but I would love for all and every minority groups to be represented in Hollywood.
David James
We don't exist lol
Nah am kidding, am living in Canada here, people here have been so kind and welcomed me with open arms. I guess, Irrespective of any race, there are people who just do not get along with other races, maybe because of their personal experience or maybe because that is how they are raised. I believe that we as individuals need to just do our part, initiate a conversation and mix up.
When I came in Canada I had a hard time mixing up with Vietnamese people cause they didn't use to be very responsive in what I am saying or something it would look socially rude for them to just completely ignore my opinion. Now, after some months of spending more time with anpther Vietnamese friend that I have now, I have understood that that is just a reflection of her culture, they take some time to open up and get comfortable with other communities and then the grt along well. All it takes is a bit of time and effort. No one is racist its just our own bad experiences that make us shy away from connecting with someone. Its important to not judge an entire community just by measuring the actins of an individual..
Love and peace. :)
That’s why I like living in California. Where I grew up, not many Asians, but where she is growing up, there’s an invasion, lol. Less racism, more connection to her culture.
Ivy Yang preach
The first thing Ellen shows is Henry shirtless...wow...typical Ellen.
Yeah, especially seeing that she is a lesbian. She must have been dying to see these masculine chiselled abs...
And yet she is Lesbian, do nothing to her obviously, how sexy the men are
That ain't Henry could be something like xingfi yifei yi F
fi....fuckfu....etc...the English names does not suite asians......
@@afrenchyineire7135 she has seen better men than this asian trans homosexual guy or woman....
@@princenathan3941 wow I can't believe how racist you are
1:32 Henry: "I'm from East Malaysia, Sarawak." XD XD XD me like how he is proud of his heritage.. just like i am. 😊 Any Sarawakians here???
🙋🏻♀️
🙋♂️
🙏👍🏿🤟
I love when Ellen asked her where she was from she said “West Virginia” audience was expecting her to go further back to her ancestral land lmao.
UniquelyMade No they didnt...why would you assume that? Oh is it cause to minority's all white people are fucking stupid? Ellen asked a regular question audience listened, Its Not That Deep Fam...
Dusan Ivic NO, Ellen expected her to say an Asian country, point blank. I don't read into things too much but some ppl act like they can't see things smh
Richmond, Virginia.
xspringrose thank you! It was so obvious which is why the audience laughed when she said Virginia.
Dusan Ivic why would i assume it? Because the audience even laughed when she said “Virginia” Sherlock. It’s not rocket science. You’re so defensive lmao, no one is attacking “white People” did i even mention the term “white” anywhere in my original comment? Take your white guilt anger someplace else, you don’t want this fight sweetie pie.
Constance gives me life, “Richmond, Virginia” haha, neighbor Marylander here! Loved her in Fresh Off the Boat, so I cannot wait for this movie! 😊
Sooo we’re just gonna avoid the fact that Ellen didn’t even ask Constance a question until the 1:38 mark and only asked the guy the first initial questions.
Boys rule and girls drool. Lol
I guess she missed the ordinance that says must ask 2nd guest a question by 90 second mark of youtube clip?
"Constance, where are you from?"
"Richmond, VA"
...I thought Ellen's next question was going to be, "But where are you really from?" 😂
she would have asked that if she really meant that
I'm so happy two Malaysians as the leading actors; Henry Holding and Datuk Michelle Yeoh.
Syah Nazmi It's Henry Golding.
Henry Holdings Sdn Bhd
Donna Mosinoh omg I almost spat out my drink reading that hahahah
agak-agak la nak perli nama orang tu..hahaha
Ili Elfeera hahahahahahaha

She is so good on fresh of the boat😂😂💚💚
😂😁😁😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Eddie hates the direction of FOB.
The trailer is amazing you guys!!! SO HYPED
Hey Ellen where r YOU from? Well I mean ur originality. Definitely not US I'm sure
I think Norway s/
Ellen's ancestors should be from somewhere around western Europe.
First Malaysian and Sarawakian celebrity in Ellen ! I'm so proud ! ❤
We as east Malaysian so proud of you Henry...#Sarawak #Borneo #teamgolding
YES MALAYSIA REPRESENT and the best part is he's half east malaysian honestly im so happy 🙌 south east asians are out here and we thriving 🇲🇾
When he said he's from Sarawak, East Malaysia, I was so happy as I'm from Sarawak, too 😄. I do wonder if Ellen knows that we have East and West Malaysia and if she have heard of Sarawak hehe.
vaishnavi ravinthra represent what?
fHinZ SNklon ya lah tek
He so handsome 😍😻
Omg the audience was dead 😂😂😂
Jad Y’all yeah, if it was BTS, they would become super super excited,
Jad Y’all at least Asian people don't have a lot of kids in jail and in foster mom. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂💪🏽💪🏽
@@bluerosecraft6612 Because they keep the abuse a secret and keep the kids.
Ellen asked "Where are you from?" lol, *facepalm*
AhnSeoulo maybe she wanted to literally know where they’re from? Like where he was born and grew up, not necessarily ethnicity.
I was like OMG....
i know! so annoyed
@sillydominikay it was the way she phrased it. "Where are you from originally?". I'm pretty sure that no white actor has been asked that exact same question on the show before.
Well he is definitely not from US. It is necessary.
the first Malaysian in Ellen Show . Najib must be proud with you !!
syamil ashari soon he will be Dato Henry Golding
revoltin85 agreed . someday . from what state he will get datoship ??

Greetings from East Malaysia! Feeling proud and am blown away by this! 🤘🤘
Love that they are giving each other equal spotlight.
No wonder this turned out to be an unforgettable movie 😍😍
Constance’s reaction to “where are you from?” Is the reaction of every Asian American! So priceless and yet she was so graceful 👏🏼
Yes! Asian represent! I love this so much!
Delia movie makes me in the mood for sushi
David R that makes no sense at all -.-
@@notdomix9881 being around Mexican people puts me in the mood for Mexican food. Watching this movie make me want to eat sushi
Go, Henry! Watched you since the days you hosted 8TV quickie and your travel shows when i was a kiddo, and now you're on big screens. Proud of you! Love from Malaysia
The movie is surprisingly touching and amazing. Its way way beyond the trailer and the awkward interviews.
omg so weird seeing “Tiong Bahru” flashed on Ellen
Ellen does it AGAIN, asking the Asians "Where r you from?" then acts surprise when Constance says "Richmond Virginia". smh
This.
Like ellen meant to ask where is she originally from , where was she born ... cus she stated that she been in richmond virginia for eight yrs
constance is originally from richmond, virgina. she's been out in LA/Hollywood for 8 years. She is American, that's the point.
I think Ellen was hoping Constance would say where her family and ancestors were originally from cause
many people in the U.S still have tendency to think Asians living in the U.S are "foreigners" even though they were born and raised in the U.S like Constance. I guess is because Asians are the late comers to U.S compare to other people like the whites, blacks, hispanics and so on.
I’m so excited!!! This book series is amazing and I can’t wait for the movie. It’s going to be so good!!
ABSOLUTELY going to see this on premier night. The fact that there is finally some Asian representation in Hollywood that will create the potential for more in the future is extremely beautiful.

Loved the movie. So romantic, fun and great production. The leads have great chemistry.
I am so happy I watched the movie today. To see a cast that looks similar to you on the big screen. It’s been a while since I have seen a full asian cast. I think the last movie I can remember was the Joy Luck Club. Brilliant!
Wow finally something exciting comes out of Richmond, VA
I'm so proud that he represented East Malaysia, Sarawak which is where I'm from. and I'd really love to meet him in person. he's such an amazing actor

I've read the books and I'M SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS OMG
Omg I met him once in Malaysia. Pretty cool!!
I wish those people wouldn't have start laughing when she said she was from Richmond, like that was a weird answer.
It would be great to see an Asian James Bond someday!
I HOPE Asian Bond gets better recetion then idris Alba, people are ticked about that
The name is wong, James Wong lol
God no... i am asian and i prefer james bond to be white
So proud of him!!!when he said (im iban)...😍😍😍😍😍😍😙😙😙
The audience seems pretty disinterested. Puts the whole racist thing into perspective. Just something I thought. No need to start a ruckus here by contradicting me. 🙏
I dont think the audience was disinterested. They were just listening. Not everyone is knowledgeable about the book.
ikr, they're kinda dead at the moment. are they not welcoming asian?
It would have been different if Daniel Henney was on the show. 😍
Kidding aside, I doubt this would be supported by the western audience. I just saw the trailer...😞
The audience was also like that when I watched the Evan Rachel Wood interview, and she's a blond, bisexual lady so... I think it's a bit extreme for you to jump to the whole racist thing. If that's the first place your mind goes, than that says something about you. Interesting.
To me, it's not about them being Asians, a whole Asian cast, etc. I'm just not interested in the movie. I have a friend that read the book and told me about it. It just seems boring to me. That's it!
He said Sarawak,Borneo...yasss! score for Henry!
Woohoo! The guy's from Sarawak!!! Proud of my state XXD
Wooo! Richmond, Va on the map buddy!!!!
Omg... i’m also half Iban and half Malay... so proud of you Henry Golding...
I love the way he introduced himself as an Iban & mentioned Sarawak state. Malaysia truly Asia. Good job Abang Henry 🙌
So exciting!!!! Cant wait
Wuhuuuu I’m east malaysian and I’m soo proud❤️❤️❤️❤️😌😌😌😌
