There's one thing we didn't mention in the video that is important in selecting the right rivet: the diameter. The diameter of a rivet will be dependant on your application so it can vary wildly from application to application. This also affects the drill size for your hole since that is dependant on the rivet diameter. If you are unsure what diameter rivet to use for your application, please consult an engineer to assist you.
@@damiancardenas6003 Not really. The most practical way to remove a rivet is to drill out the centre with the same size (or *one* size smaller) bit that you used to drill the original hole. You'll usually find that the bit will self centre and make drilling easier.
I had to teach myself how to rivet for a small project today. Glad I had my grandfathers riveter. I'm pretty handy and I'm always fixing stuff but have just never used a pop rivet in my life. Now my mind is running about where I could have used these in the past and what I will use these for in the future. Its like a WHOLE NEW WORLD! Thanks for the video.
Once again... imagine my surprise after finding what I thought were difficult to find copper rivets and looking for reviews, only to find videos direct from the manufacturer. Keep up the good work!
Great information!!! He’s using the metric system (.48) and then converting to fractions. Just convert to metric like the rest of the world. Life will be so much easier.
I am learning all about ‘pop rivets’ [which I think are brilliant BTW] + here... I see that they have also been used as ‘mini swords’! I never knew what these ‘things’ were (my father was handy so I saw these lying around when I was a kid) until my husband said he was going to repair something with ‘rivets’... and I said “What? You can ‘rivet’?” Then I went down the ‘rivet rabbit hole’. I am learning so much about these little gems. 😌
This was very informative, thank you so much for posting this video. Before watching this, I knew nothing about rivets. Now I'm not totally clueless, thank you.
That was really, really good. Now I believe I can actually rivet the heck out of something. Explained different types, how to measure, importance of friction fit, and more. Good job ! You explain things well. Consider making more informational videos for us dummies. : )
I just bought a pneumatic pop rivet gun! This is a gamer changer. I’m installing windows in a aluminum trailer. Pop riveting the skin if the trailer to a steel frame that the windows attach to.
as far as pull strength goes, is it possible to use a pull rivet to connect plastic to metal? I am trying to fix a plastic and metal buckle and I imagine the force required could crack the metal.
5:45-beautiful. So what happened next at 5:54? Why didn't the inside of the rivet flatten against the plate as is the previous example, but instead is sticking out, hardly flattened at all? What caused this? The rivet was too long?
That is a closed end rivet. It doesn't flatten the same way as open end rivets. In this application, it was a little too long for fastening to this piece of steel.
What size ribbon should I use for a bumper on my vehicle don’t want to screw any screws in there because I’m afraid to piece my fall off while I’m driving
Thanks for the video. I'm new to this tool but is it possible to rivet something to a surface from the outside in? I'm trying to install a bracket inside a plastic container and would prefer to drill the hole and pop a rivet from the outside in so that the rivet does not extend outside the box any more than it needs to.
I have a stainless steel trash can that has a foot lever to step on and raise the lid. The hinge goes completely across the back. The rivets all wore out. So Stainless steel strong rivets is needed. How do I measure the tiny hole size ? I do not have caliper that small. Not that thick. Rectangle on side type can. Shape keeps it strong.
Why when riveting a carpet edging on my boat does the river mandrel not break off? The rivet is aluminum and the edging is rubber and the boat is fiberglass
Sir, Thanks for your useful information. I have a question. Can I use pop rivet for outdoor metal rooftop ? If I can, then which type of pop rivet should I use ? I am eagerly waiting for your comment. - Sudip Basak, India.
This was immensely helpful, thank you so much for this video: combined with your other videos on riveting, I think I'm set! Plus I'm going to visit your website, and then I'll have a reference for measuring my rivets. I'm also going to watch the videos in your description. I could really kick myself, yesterday I could have bought a digital caliper set that was on sale at my local hardware store, and of course I didn't! Oh well, for now a tape measure will suffice. Thanks again, I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos, and sharing them!
I have two rivet guns, one about 20 years old that has seen very minimal use (less than 50 rivets) and one I just bought last month. I have the same problem with both of them. Rarely do I get a good clean break on the mandrel. Most times the mandrel will break off at the mid-way point and gets stuck inside the gun. I have to disassemble the gun to remove the other half of the mandrel. The rivets I use are clean, correctly sized and straight. Trust me when I say it’s very frustrating trying to do anything with these tools because they keep jamming up. Grrrr! Any thoughts anyone?
So the reason my rivets bend/twist, while putting them in, is because my rivets are too long. I never knew how much a rivet should stick out of the material, when I put it through the hole.

yes. preferably one with good corrosion resistance.

Sure. We would advise structural rivets for that unless you need a specific kind of rivet for your application.
So the reason my rivets bend/twist, while putting them in, is because my rivets are too long. I never knew how much a rivet should stick out of the material, when I put it through the hole.
