For an ASMR video it was just right. Enjoyable to just watch the final product develop without stretching things out too far. But enough details to let folks see what you did and have a go at something similar themselves. I really like my Krenov style planes. Still the ones I enjoy using the most.
You don't - you could just use a table saw instead, he is showing you one way with hand tools but there are others....think he is a bit of a hand tool guy...
thanks so much, it's not so difficult really but does require some woodworking skills admittedly... but give it a go if you can find the time one day...😊
My bandsaw isn't as accurate as yours so I use my tablesaw instead when making a plane. This one turned out beautifully. Adding the brass strip to the strike end of the wedge is a nice detail. I've used 3/8" brass rod for the crosspin a few times. As with your plane, it adds a little bling. Good job with the plane and the video.
yes I don' actually own a table saw but presumably if set up correctly it will give a good enough finish for the iron bed so that would make sense. It's good to add a little bit of customisation on things and I have strips of copper and brass left over from other projects so why not 😊 Glad you liked it, warm regards
I would like to hear some explanation. Or better understand kind of the what and why. I realize that may just mean that I'm not the intended audience but I figured I would ask in case you had a second channel or a link to your inspiration maybe.
yes fair enough, good to know, thanks. My other videos are more slow going - and there is one with a voice over on there with explanations so I kind of mix it up a bit...cheers
That is a really beautiful plane. This is the first time I've seen one of your videos. I'm subscribing. Looking forward to seeing what else you've made.
If you can’t tell yet, I didn’t even look at the title or description; just saw you posted and got a notification then opened it immediately and started watching intently
thanks for watching - your comments are actually very funny - yes we are going full Krenov although I know someone who has one of his and it's less refiend and finished - makes it more grippy too
Absolutely stunning. I don’t suppose you sell these do you? Your skill is beyond my capability and this video comes at just the right time as I am looking for a good block/ apron plane. 😊
thank you - I just passed the drill bit through the hole on the other side - it was long enough - and that acted as the guide - as you have worked out things slip in the glue up even with the dowels so good to leave that to after...cheers
thanks very much, yeah it's a good little project - I am building my own collection ! it's shellac that I make up myself and finished with alfie shine wax which I love...cheers
@@boreoffThanks for the reply. Yes I make my own shellac as well but have always left my planes bare. I have 2 in the works that I plan to put a finish on and I may remake those I’m currently using just to complete the set. I’ve only heard great things about Alfie shine. Will have to try it myself.
The piles of Ebony in my shop are calling to me. Did you make this video to encourage me to stop sitting on it and make those axe and hammer handles I have planned, in a (maybe ill-fated) attempt to recreate the work of Poom’s Project? I think you did and, as a fellow galoot hand tool woodworker that loves working exotic woods, I think the algorithm is trying to pair us up - and I am here for it!
Hello Sir, I like your plane. Looks like a great user. I wonder if you have any opinion on wear bevels on wooden planes, or whether they are necessary? I would like to add that your work stands on its own on youtube. I'd love to see and hear more about what you've learned over the years. For example your choice of tools, choice of consumables, choice of workshop fixtures and strategies and jigs. Thanks a bunch for uploading.
Hi, many thanks for your feedback and comment. If you are referring to creating a back side bevel (the ruler trick) I have never bothered or needed to concern myself with that tbh. So no, not necessary but this is just my experience. All the best...
@@boreoff Hi, The wearbevel is a feature of the mouth of some wooden planes (especially single-iron planes), where the bottom of the mouth is at a similar angle to the blade bed, while the top of the mouth is at its normal angle. As I understand it, this both allows reflattening of the plane sole over time without opening the mouth, and offers similar benefits to a chipbreaker -- re-directing the angle of the shaving while it goes through the mouth of the plane. UA-cam channel "dusty splinters" has some videos on this concept including helpful diagrams. I have tried the wear bevel on one of my planes, but I am still unsure how much of a difference it makes.
Thanks 🙏 very interesting- I will check that out. I rarely flatten the sole again partly cause I use lignum vitae which is very hard so no chipping and most of mine are short. Also I tend to use my LN no4 for smoothing where I might notice any issues. I have built a few with cap irons but don’t notice any difference between those and the single iron ones tbh! All the best
1:33 aha! I called it! You’re making a hand plane, aren’t you, you Ebony devil you. Looks like the beginnings of a Veritas based smoother? I’ve got money on the Veritas kit making an appearance (I love those kits, I’ve got 2 unopened ready to go for my next plane order)
Oh by the way, what blade did you use? I can see by your tool selection that I will likely need to sell my first born if I want to raise the funds but am interested all the same!
I made my blade but Ron Hock tools sells good thick blades which are suitable for this - if you have a table saw then it can do a lot of this…but yeah hand tools are expensive for sure but last a lifetime- cheers
if you have a table saw ( i don't) you don't need a plane as that will be accurate enough for the bed presumably...but yes a tool to make a tool and all that 😊 cheers
absolutely love that little plane - beautiful and classy - great edit by the way - straight to the point with some cool angles...thanks!
Thanks very much, cheers
well said i agree
Beautiful work!
Thank you for sharing. I always look forward to your adventures.
thanks for watching, appreciate it, cheers
The fact that you achieve such high level of accuracy AND beauty is just mind-blowing. Fascinating as always 🎉
Many thanks - appreciate it, cheers
Beautiful! The bronze in the wedge is a nice detail!
thanks so much, yeah that was a last minute thought tbh - goes well with the cross pin, warm regards
wow! beautiful work.
Thank you! Cheers!
That is a very nice hand plane… bravo sir.
Thank you kindly
i really enjoyed every second of this video
Thanks 🙏 appreciate it
That is a beautiful hand plane, amazing work!💯😁
Thanks a lot!

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it! It's true that using your own shop made tools feels pretty great...and they are fun projects...cheers
This is a cool video and I was excited to watch it until I realized I needed 3 hand planes to make one.
You don't - you could just use a table saw instead, he is showing you one way with hand tools but there are others....think he is a bit of a hand tool guy...
If you have a table saw then no need to use a hand plane, thanks for watching, cheers
Absolutely beautiful, awesome job
Thank you! Cheers!
Absolute awesome!
thanks v much
Appreciate the to the point editing, and very nice looking plane.
thanks very much glad you said so ..wasn't too sure if I had overcut ...never easy depends on so many things...cheers
That is a piece of beauty. Well done!
thanks very much, cheers
Beautiful as usual
thank you. cheers
Oh my god that's so beautiful... I hope that one day I can also make something that amazing
thanks so much, it's not so difficult really but does require some woodworking skills admittedly... but give it a go if you can find the time one day...😊

Действительно очень дорогая и достойная ручная работа. Вот что мне не хватало в Ютубе перед сном, браво!
Thanks 🙏
Totally love that little plane, me wants one 😊 the copper (?) accents the dark tones so well. Awesome filming by the way.
thanks very much, cheers
That is beautiful work. An absolutely stunning piece of art or tool whichever appeals to you in the moment.

It is beautiful.
thanks very much 😊
Very nice work! Beautiful!
thanks so much, warm regards
THAT'S PLANE BEAUTIFUL!! 😅
thanks very much, greetings from France
5:15 wow! That’s unique! Never seen anyone put a copper flat into the wedge top before. That’s purdy
'Purdy' hahah good word!!

Absolutely stunning. I don’t suppose you sell these do you? Your skill is beyond my capability and this video comes at just the right time as I am looking for a good block/ apron plane. 😊
thanks very much, afraid I just make things for fun and don't sell but flattered to be asked, warm regards
beautiful! How did you drill the hole on the other side after the glue up?
thank you - I just passed the drill bit through the hole on the other side - it was long enough - and that acted as the guide - as you have worked out things slip in the glue up even with the dowels so good to leave that to after...cheers
Nice work. I make my own as well in the same style. Love the brass as a striker plate in the wedge.
May I ask what’s the finish?
thanks very much, yeah it's a good little project - I am building my own collection ! it's shellac that I make up myself and finished with alfie shine wax which I love...cheers

How long did this take to make? Stunning!
Thanks 🙏 hard to say as I was filming it but about 1 long day roughly but I have made many so I am pretty fast now 😎
@@boreoff oh my that's impressive!
5:00 love the rich tone

hilarious glad the algo is working hahah - yes go for it and make use of the Ebony - don't save it, never do that...

1:25 oh boy, I see a 45! Is that a frog ye be makin’? Starting to get excited!
Beautiful work. Curious if you made or purchased your brass hammer…
Hi, thanks very much, I bought the hammer, cheers
I build furniture…. Wow such great work

How to make a hand plane, first get yourself some hand planes......
He who dies with the most handplanes wins!
lol!
Did you make the plane iron or did you buy it? If you purchased the iron can you give us a link?
I made that but you can buy nice irons from Ron Hock tools - thick, well made ...regards

it's the price thanks

but if it takes a plane to make a plane..... where did the first plane come from??
if you have a table saw ( i don't) you don't need a plane as that will be accurate enough for the bed presumably...but yes a tool to make a tool and all that 😊 cheers
It’s beautiful
