There are so few professional photographers (and not professional youtubers) that explain their mind, their process and their methods with a same passion and gentleman manner as You do. Respect for that style of presentation where the gear ain't the purpose, but the result (even when You do have so many fancy cameras like in the "Route 66" video). It really is so refreshing to see someone to value exactly the quality of photo and the location, not the gear for itself. As your style really shows it is the photographer who does the work, not the gear.
Thanks for taking us out. Interesting. Attention to detail. Informative. More then clicking the shutter. Loved the tire deflating section. I can imagine the choreography between shooting the video and baking the scrambled eggs. And oh yes, great pictures!
Nick - so happy to see you working your magic in this landscape. You did a great job showcasing the challenges and the opportunities, especially with film. Can't wait to see more.
I recently found your videos and have been following you since. I like your style and dedication. You do things right for all the right reasons. I was a commercial photographer for 35 years and processed all my own stuff. I shot everything in 4x5.I find it is a pleasure to watch you work with the same attention to detail and science as I did for so many years. No one else on the tube has the same vibe that you do. Keep on keeping on, Mr. Carver You da man!
Well done sir! Love the production value and all the camera angles. That's a LOT of work to do. I always tell myself I'm going to do more stuff like that, but sometimes I'm just too beat.
Thanks so much, man! I know if there's anyone that can appreciate how much work these videos are, it's you. You're the originator! Your videos have been a big inspiration to me.
Nick another enjoyable and entertaining video of our beautiful California Desert. I first traveled the Mojave Road back in 1986 shortly after it opened. By being opened after Friends of Mojave with leadership by Dennis Casebier (sp) mapped out the trail and erected carins at the various cross roads. The road or trail gets lots of usage, but what beautiful scenery along the way. Thank you for sharing your video, excellent.
I know Im randomly asking but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account? I somehow forgot my login password. I would love any assistance you can offer me!
@Hugo Joseph I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm trying it out now. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
I can't believe you're so entertaining and you don't even have a British accent. Haha. Really enjoy your attention to detail and real photography. Keep it going, Nick. You da man.
Man, I discovered your channel like yesterday and I have to say I absolutely love it. The way you explain what you want to photograph, the results you're looking for, everything is like so professional. And the results are here, great photos. Keep on the good work.
I dont live in the desert, but you inspire me to go out and take pics, you take such great pride in your work, love it. The purple picture was nice, a little too much purple on the mountain for my taste, but the rest was simply amazing.
The b/w images of the cinder cones are superb. Sometimes b/w photography reveals more "beauty" than color & it really speaks right here - at least for me. I am also drawn to your creativity with the astrophotography too.
Thanks for sharing your photography journey with us. You made some great images and looked like a fun time out there. I always think of the video camera as that quiet friend, takes time to talk to but ultimately worth it when they share a story or two back with you. Look forward to more in the future.
Thanks a lot, Shawn. I agree with you on the video camera. Plus, the weirdness of talking to a video camera all by myself out in the middle of the desert eventually feels worth it once the video is posted. Haha
Nick, fellow LF photographer, and your 2nd shot was great. Wonderful explanation of your thinking process. Your camping tent and sleeping arrangements are also of interest to me.
Hey Nick, my 7 and 4 year old grandchildren watched your Mojave road shoot when they saw the flash light they were screaming PaPa we have to do that. This is what I want my grand kids to do. To be excited about photography and art. Thank you, Doug from Tenn.
Just saw this (November 2020). Fun and interesting. Really love the BW pano!! Good thinking to pass on the color. But as awesome as the 6x17 is and tempting too, I think I had my chance to stay with film. But still, seeing this does make me regret that road not taken. Hat is off to you. Smart and good work!!
Nice! I've been loving the desert lately and have been wanting to visit the Mojave as a break from the Joshua Tree area. Your video is good inspiration to get out there before it gets too hot. Those pictures turned out really nice as usual.
Thanks, man! I really need to make better use of my time when the weather is mild. I always say I'm going to go out to the desert again, but before I know it, it's too damn hot and then I have to wait for fall.
Very nice to see you working with the view camera. My ancient 8x10 has been closeted for far too many years! Good inspiration. Keep up the excellent work. Good Thoughts - Gary Orona
Great work Nick - and thanks for sharing even when the light is not "epic" and how you were still able to pull out some great shots! Do you carry multiple 617 film backs? Those can get expensive... like everything photography related!
Thank you very much! I only carry one 6x17 back. The weight and the expense makes carrying multiple backs a pain. And since a roll of film is only 4 exposures, I figure it's not too much work to finish off a roll if I want to change films.
Treacherous, that's cute. Lol. When are you going to plan a trip to Australia Nick. I've always wanted to do a month or two trip up in Kakadu. I think you love it up there.
Haha! By Australian standards I'm sure this trail is a bunny slope. I'd love to come to Australia and do some serious backcountry travel. That show "All 4 Adventure" gives me the itch to come see what's out there.
+Nick Carver Love the 617 format! Nice capture with the Velvia - it's always so vivid. Liked the black and white image a lot as well ........Have you tried a Milky Way shot with your large format cameras ?
Thank you, sir! I haven't yet. Because of the apertures, ISO speeds, and reciprocity failure involved, I know it would have to become a long-exposure star trail photo. I like photos like that, but I never think to go out and try them.
Love this series of yours- it's so relaxing to watch! Could you tell me what the flash light you used to do the light painting in this video was? Thank you!
Thanks! Partly because I just like the logo - has that classic Americana vibe. But also I appreciate farmers more than athletes so I guess I wanted something that represented them instead of a sports team. I looked for a Kodak trucker hat first, but no luck - haha.
May I ask what kind of wireless mic you used? I'm in the market for one and don't want to have to sift through a bunch of junk before I find a good one.
Thanks! At least triple the work. Enough hassle that every time I come back from a trip I vow to never video it again. But then, of course, I change my mind for the next trip. Ha
Haha I bet. I imagine those vehicle shots were a pain. I have plans to do a UA-cam series documenting the conversion of a cargo van into a motorhome then traveling around Australia taking photos in remote areas. On the plus side I will have a tonne of time to do all this but sounds like I'll need it all.
I just keep going back to that picture you called your favorite of the trip. The one where you stressed the nuances of the Fuji Velvia film. How can I get a copy?
I finish off the whole roll before changing it, but I usually just take duplicate frames to have as a backup in case the original exposure has a light leak or scratch.
I think a regular high-clearance truck could probably handle most of the section I did. I haven't done the full road though. Other parts require 4x4 from what I hear. Or at least a buddy in another truck to get you out of a sticky situation - ha.
Such a great video ! The way you explain your shots is just amazing ! i just love your trips in the desert, so peaceful and zen. i've got a few questions : 1/ what is your carbon fiber tripod and the head mount you used for large format camera ? 2/ what is your watch model ? Love film photography ! Keep on shooting in a free world ! ;)
I enjoy your attitude about the what the day has to offer. Every day is a special day with or without a great shot.
Thank you. Amen to that.

This format is really awesome. I love this type of panos you make!
Damn man this video is making me fall in love with the desert again. Thank you.
There are no other videos on youtube like yours Nick. They are great! Please keep uploading.
Thank you, sir! Will do.
Thanks for taking us out. Interesting. Attention to detail. Informative. More then clicking the shutter. Loved the tire deflating section.

Ahhh. That makes me wish I lived in a larger country… Never been much into landscape photography, but I enjoy your field trip videos. Thanks.
Nick I love your videos, very inspirational.
Thanks a lot!
Love to come back and watch all these past videos again, always an inspiration.
Well done sir! Love the production value and all the camera angles. That's a LOT of work to do. I always tell myself I'm going to do more stuff like that, but sometimes I'm just too beat.

I love that first shot of the Joshua trees! Keep up the the good work and videos!
Thanks!
Please don't stop doing this Nick! Love the new results and i understand the need to explore even though your monochrome work is special!
Thank you, sir. I definitely plan to do more.
Really awesome stuff
Thanks a lot!
I know Im randomly asking but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account?

@Hugo Joseph I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm trying it out now.

@Hugo Joseph it worked and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much, you saved my account :D

This is probably my favorite channel at the moment and I am subscribed to a lot of people. Great job Nick!
That's saying a lot. Thank you very much!
Fantastic indeed and as you said "can't wait for the next one."
Thank you!
I dont live in the desert, but you inspire me to go out and take pics, you take such great pride in your work, love it. The purple picture was nice, a little too much purple on the mountain for my taste, but the rest was simply amazing.
+lintownboy Thank you for the compliments.
I'm so in love with your film photography series. Can't wait to see more
+TheNo85307 Thank you very much! I hope to do more soon.
***** My pleasure, good sir. I was watching your videos when I was starting with film pohotography. And you helped me a lot :)
This is true amazing adventure for photographers... Only alone ! :) GJ Nick :)
i love to return back to your old videos :-)
Finally a new video!!!! I've been waiting for this!! Thanks Nick!! Always always inspiring!!
Very glad to hear that! Thank you, sir!
The b/w images of the cinder cones are superb. Sometimes b/w photography reveals more "beauty" than color & it really speaks right here - at least for me. I am also drawn to your creativity with the astrophotography too.
Thank you! I agree with you about B/W photography. Sometimes color is too literal.
I loved that black and white shot! This video really makes me want to shoot with film again, haha.
Thanks! You should. Film is loads of fun!
Love your you tube. Love your style and still using film, learn a lot from you. Thanks.

Great mood, super interesting.
Congrats and keep them coming.
Much obliged! Thanks for watching.

you are very inspiring, I started making print, Fine Art Photography. Thanks you!
I'm glad to hear that! Have fun making prints
Nick hope all is well. Looking forward to see more videos.
Thanks! Got a new video coming soon.
Good content from film photographer is pretty rare! Keep it coming!
+Uniden Thank you! Will do.

solid content, keep this up and your sub count will definitely be growing. good stuff nick.
Thank you very much
Very nice to see you working with the view camera. My ancient 8x10 has been closeted for far too many years! Good inspiration. Keep up the excellent work. Good Thoughts - Gary Orona
Gary Orona thanks a lot, Gary. Yeah I really enjoy the process of using a view camera. It's slow and taxing at times, but I love it.
love your "on location photography" series! keep it up
Thank you!
Love that tent setup.
Superb as usual Nick! So entertaining and informative
Super interesting your photography serie! Thank you!
Whiskey and a tea guy = Nick Carver
great production!
Nicely done my friend! I'm with you on Fujifilm Velvia; I absolutely love that film as well! See you on the trail. Tony
Thank you, sir! Yeah, Velvia is like steroids for color.
Love the channel man! Been binging all your vids
very cool photos

Hey Nick! You mentioned you using a digital SLR for your regular work. What is your regular work? Keep up the good videos!
I’m an architectural photographer shooting commercial properties (office buildings, industrial buildings, retail centers).
We definitely need a new term for "photographing" :p
Treacherous, that's cute. Lol. When are you going to plan a trip to Australia Nick. I've always wanted to do a month or two trip up in Kakadu. I think you love it up there.

As usual quality stuff man!
Thank you sir!
Rockin the John Deer Ball Cap!
These are so well done. Really looking forward to taking my cameras out there some time soon!
Finally a new video
Epic landscape
Thank you.
you inspire me. thank you.
Jean Lecoq thank you for watching!
I am going to get a 90 mm lens, I didn't know you needed a center filter for 4x5, you're the first I've seen using one on a 90.
I don't use it on the 90mm for 4x5, but I do use it sometimes on 6x17 because the negative is bigger and so that has some vignette problems.
Great video. Very well done. I admire your work. Indeed, you inspire me to get out there and do it myself.
Thanks a lot, Bob. That's my goal!
I really appreciate but I love you keep sending me more information in making me a good photographer
+Nick Carver Love the 617 format! Nice capture with the Velvia - it's always so vivid. Liked the black and white image a lot as well ........Have you tried a Milky Way shot with your large format cameras ?

Great and interesting video as always, thanks!
Thank you very much!
Love this series of yours- it's so relaxing to watch! Could you tell me what the flash light you used to do the light painting in this video was? Thank you!
3:24 awesome campsite 😎
Hello! Nice video! What backpack are you using here?
Hey nick! I remember you said some years ago your brother makes the music you use? The western guitar stuff. Has he released it somewhere yet??
I agree with UFO Bob, this is good stuff.
Thank you
I frigging love your colours! Even on your digita photos the colours look outstanding! man, I gotta lean how to better edit digital photos, any tips?
Just find your channel, you photograph is great! would you mind tell me the lightmeter are you using (that single eye stuff)? thanks!
ubbelohed Wu thanks! It's a Pentax digital spot meter. It's a really great meter.
Another great video Nick! I love your hat, but have to ask why John Deere?
Thanks! Partly because I just like the logo - has that classic Americana vibe. But also I appreciate farmers more than athletes so I guess I wanted something that represented them instead of a sports team. I looked for a Kodak trucker hat first, but no luck - haha.
great video! love the velvia shot.. time to dust off my 4x5... btw, what kind of tent is that you've got attached to the car?
ha! nevermind.. I see your other video now... ;-)
Thanks! Yeah start pumping some sheets of film through that 4x5. It's fun.
inspiring
May I ask what kind of wireless mic you used? I'm in the market for one and don't want to have to sift through a bunch of junk before I find a good one.
I borrowed my brothers and I'm sorry to say I don't know the model number. It's made by Sony.
+Nick Carver If you think to ask please do... It sounded great.
+mobiltec found out. It's the Sony UWP-D11.
***** Thanks Nick!
+mobiltec no problem!
Have you ever tried stitching 6x6fil into a pano? I know you have the pano large format, but just curious if youve tried it?
Just discovered your channel... Thanks, UA-cam! :)
Duilio Helfenstens Thanks for watching!
3:52 😮 awesome 😎
Sweet video. How much extra work do you find it takes to make the videos as well as do your photography?
+Mitch Willis that sounds like an awesome idea. My best advice is to get a proper video camera instead of a DSLR that does video. I wish I did that.
I just keep going back to that picture you called your favorite of the trip. The one where you stressed the nuances of the Fuji Velvia film. How can I get a copy?
Do you have a specific print size in mind? Feel free to email me through www.nickcarverphotography.com/contact/ to discuss further
Very inspiring !! Need to buy a van now :-)
It's a blasty blast... lol
7:00 that first Velvia shot tho.
great!
How do you mount the camera inside the truck? Is it on a tripod? thx
I'm looking for "Mojave Rd" right now and not even Google Earth knows of one. Is there another name for this stretch of road?
0:29 🤭🤭🤭 u r such a skilled adventurer 🤭🤭🤭
Nick, is it Vèlvia or Velvìa? :)
4:15 🤭 hungry but gotta take pics... 🤭🤭🤭
are you take one frame on a roll and the switching roll and then starting another or are you using the hole roll.
I finish off the whole roll before changing it, but I usually just take duplicate frames to have as a backup in case the original exposure has a light leak or scratch.
@@nickcarverphoto i find ilford to have alot of scratch do you mate
Nice with the graduated ND
does the road requite a 4 wheeler or can it gone by a typical truck?
I think a regular high-clearance truck could probably handle most of the section I did. I haven't done the full road though. Other parts require 4x4 from what I hear. Or at least a buddy in another truck to get you out of a sticky situation - ha.
+David E yeah definitely. A couple of MaxTrax would be smart for the deep sand sections too.
is that 4runner 4wd?
that old 4 runner still running? damn
Ha. Yeah. Not without some major repairs though...
Such a great video ! The way you explain your shots is just amazing ! i just love your trips in the desert, so peaceful and zen.
i've got a few questions :
1/ what is your carbon fiber tripod and the head mount you used for large format camera ?
2/ what is your watch model ?
Love film photography ! Keep on shooting in a free world ! ;)
Victor Moreno thank you very much! The tripod legs are gitzo systematic and the head is by Really Right Stuff. Watch by fossil.
11:18 😮like this 💕
i know this is an older video, could a stock f150 drive in a few miles?
Yeah I think it could. I'm sure the condition of the road changes throughout the year, but I'm sure it could handle a large portion of it.
@@nickcarverphoto thanks, not that I am free from that horrible concept called "work". I can now spend more time wandering.
@@davidewersphotography1013 Please don't use that 4-letter word around here. It's always keeping me from doing fun things.
@@nickcarverphoto i beg for forgiveness and will never us that horrid word again.
Dude,! you didn't see that sasquatch by your tent..??
You're almost as dedicated as a mountain biker. :)
ValiRossi I do that too, but I'm much more fanatical about this - haha
