In this "photography on location" video I venture to the Mojave Desert in search of scenes worthy of exposing on film. A small stretch of abandoned buildings along the iconic Route 66 caught my eye and served up plenty of photo opportunities for the day.
I had no shortage of cameras with me on this trip: my Shen Hao TFC 617-A panoramic 6x17 camera, my Mamiya RZ67 medium format camera with both 6x7 and 6x6 backs, my Polaroid SX-70, and even my Polaroid Originals OneStep 2. My films of choice for the day were Fuji Velvia 100, Kodak Portra 160, and Polaroid Originals 600 color and monochrome.
So many options, so little time. But hey, variety is the spice of life, right?
Deteriorating buildings in the middle of the desert with a rumbling freight train in the background while I meticulously compose a shot on my 6x17 panoramic view camera is about 1 step away from my idea of heaven. I couldn't get enough of this place. The decaying buildings, the long and lonesome Route 66, the desert air, the incredible cameras...it's what I live for.
Overall, I'm quite pleased with the photos from this outing. The panoramic 6x17 shots ended up being my favorites, but then again there's something especially fun about shooting 6x6. Fuji Velvia film delivered as always on its promise of colorful, contrasty, "popping" photos while Kodak Portra gave me a much softer color palette and contrast.
Both looks have their merits and each are beautiful films in their own way. I can never make up my mind as to which look I like better.
Variety. Spice. Life. ...mmhhmm.

Got to say, I really enjoyed sitting back and watching this one. Fun video. Thanks for sharing.
Thomas31492 thank you very much!
Hi Nick, you've introduced me to a whole new world of photography with your incredible panoramic shots and I am now on my way to shooting large format 6x12 because of you. Thank you for being an inspiration and for all the amazing content. I hope to see more from you soon!
I’ve watched this video about 30 times ... and just pressed the restart button 🙌🏾🙌🏾 love your vids
Yesss! Thank you my friend!
"The viewfinder is more of a suggestion." LOL Glad to see a video from you again!
Alan Brock thanks man!
Hey Nick, greetings from SE England. Just been introduced to you & your channel by Thomas Heaton - so glad he posted that recommendation.
Slowly making my way through your YT archive & bumped into this episode this early morning when I couldn’t sleep. So, so glad.
Am now completely in love with the sunset shot at c.17.14. Going to have to take the dog for a long walk just to calm down. Awesome!
Yes! Finally a new video from you, Nick. It takes forever between your videos, but it's like Christmas when they finally arrive! :)
I'm curious as to what the dynamic range are on some of your larger format cameras.
bogrunberger thank you sir! I know, I wish I could post more often. But I'm glad I have the viewers who are willing to wait a bit and still watch.
The dynamic range is dependent on the film, and I plan to do a little follow up video talking about it. Good to know there's interest out there to hear about it.
3:08 bigger than your lil Sony mirrorless - you just got me there
He doesn't have to know the pain that I do owning and using a Sony mirrorless. It pretends to be something for everyone, but it's an awful thing.
When you start using the Samsung cell phone by preference you know something is very very wrong with Sony.
Haha 'a little bigger than your Sony mirrorless' 😂😂 great video, great location and images 😊 Pity you didn't have any black & white film that would have been epic, but I think Portra suited the style of the run down old buildings.
Richard Rollinson - My Analog Life I actually forgot to mention in the video that I did have b&w film with me. Haven't been too interested in b&w film lately, but I'm sure I'll swing back towards b&w soon enough. I always do.
I don’t shoot film and probably never will but damn, this has got to be the most entertaining photography video I’ve seen so far. Compositions are all winner to me.
That's the best compliment I can get. Always hoping my videos have a broader appeal than simply film shooters. Thank you!
I also like the Polaroid Spectra / 1200 film .....
Wow I only take photos digitally, but I am fascinated by this anyway. Love how it's more of a project to take a picture then usually. I will for sure follow this!
Markus Ek thank you sir! And I'm really glad to hear it's still interesting even for the vast majority of photographers who don't use these obscure cameras.
This video is really great. I love the thoughtfulness that goes into film photography- it’s definitely an entirely different mentality. Are you based in Southern California?
The Enthusiasm Project thank you! Yes I am.
Nick Carver thought so! I’m also in the SoCal desert and recognized the scenery. Again, really great work, you should make more!
Yea those desert sunset are something else. I am really loving your channel.
Nice process, nice humor, very good photos.
I really like your style and it's refreshing listening to someone talking about photography and light and composition and mood of a photo instead of ranting about spec sheets and other technobabble!! Happy to have found you and I'll be following for sure!
Kudos!
Cheers
Thanks for sharing as it only motivates me to get this winter in the UK with the Shenhao 617 w/Velvia. Looking for that one image to print 2'x6' and place on the wall. Of course, provided I pass the test with She Who Must Be Obey - Rumpole.
Keep your videos going, it's making a difference to many.
Stuart Kinkade that sounds like some good shootin'
I had no idea the Mamiya had an adapter for it. It's too bad the RB I have won't work with this adapter or lenses..
Would it be worth changing from the RB to RZ system just for this? I've run into a few situations where a little movement would be helpful. Plus it being electronic would be nice right?
Or maybe just keep both!
Thanks Nick for these awesome videos!
I’ve never used the RB, so I can’t say if the RZ is worth the upgrade. I sometimes wonder if a newer, more advanced camera is more likely to need difficult repairs. Sometimes old mechanical gear is more reliable. But I do love the tilt-shift 75mm...
Fuck I love your channel dude..... do more.... seriously
7.45min ... hilarious
Joshua Vince thank you very much!
Hello I always enjoy your videos when I have time and I was enjoying this one up until the part where you film yourself eating lunch. As a UA-camr myself that's one thing I try to avoid to my utmost is wasting subscribers time being self-indulgent. I had to turn it off at that point
I really enjoyed this Nick. Love that you're including Polaroid in your mix.
Waou !! I'm impressed by everything in this video !! Camera work, photographs, lunch scenes... Really great movie, i will watch it again !
Sam lbert thank you very much! Got the best lunch scenes on the web...
That Shen Hao TFC 617-A panoramic 6x17 are just amazing, "must saving up"
I love that oven on the porch polariod, it has some nice reflections. The nice sunset skys looked great. I also loved that panoramic shot of the 2 buildings side by side, and just after that the little shack panoramic as well. You do such an amazing job with your photos.
so cool working with film is so rare now atleast from what i know... i have a bunch of old film cameras at home just never used them! subbed! love your style and videos
I don't know why UA-cam recommended me to look this video, but you know what it very inspire me to look back to my old analog camera.
Dude absolutely love your videos, the suttle cool music the off roading just fantastic! Keep it up!!
I am not sure, how I missed this... but talking from the perspective of 2022 , this is one of the best videos I have seen in the last 5 years!
Good to see you back in action again! I've been wondering where you were. I've been enjoying your Polaroid work on Instagram though.
John Wilkinson thank you sir! Yeah I finally got a break in my schedule to make a video. Wish it wasn't so long between posts. I love doing them.
Hey Nick I thought I'd drop a comment to let you know I love your videos. I've been waiting for another one of your videos. I hope you keep them coming. Have a nice day sir.
Oscar Guzman thanks a lot! I definitely plan to do more.
I’m so glad finally you upload new video!! Thank you so much for all the efforts Nick!
Adam Pamungkas thank YOU for the support!
wow a master at his craft at work..thank you for sharing
Hahahahahaha mate you had me cracking up. This is one of my favourite of your videos. Loved the versatility in your photography for this trip, loved the comical arrogance with you eating lunch and other humour, loved the alternative suggestion of using Polaroid to mix it up. A great overall video!
Love your "laid back" presentation of your day. Made it look so easy. Brought back some marvelous memories shooting with my Hasselblad Superwide camera. Thank you for a most enjoyable venture.
Thoroughly enjoyed the video. Thanks.
Draxe thank you for watching!
Loved your Polaroids and the Portra shots! Didn't like the Velvia 100 so much... Too blue and magenta for my tastes.
Edit: I take that back, I watched the rest of the video and the last three Velvia shots in the sunset were amazingly beautiful!
Excellent video Nick! You really had a lot of keepers on that trip. Very fun watching your process.
Film Photography Club thank you!
7:43 ...yeah that's right.
I actually laughed hard at that one 😂😂😂😂
What a refreshing video! And using film! who would have thought photography was only digital! I still have all my film cameras and my beloved Bronica Etrs 645. But what I liked most was your attitude, come what may you dealt with the light and the restrictions like wire fences etc. And you possess a very mature colour palette, massive points there!
Thank you very much, good sir. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Im just starting some 6x12 shooting, or as I like to call it....5 less than Nick Carver. My gf is like...what are you shooting today? "Five less than Nick Carver" LOL
Im using a 6x12 back I got in a darkroom cleanout a few years back during the time that shall not be mentioned, on my Chamonix 4x5....toying with the idea of buying a 6x17 adapter or just saving for a shen hao.....
Man, I could watch a tv show length episode of this stuff. Outstanding, I love your videos. Phenomenal work to boot, always stoked when I see a new video of yours in my subscribed list. Keep ‘em coming!
Fernando Rodriguez thanks man I really appreciate that. Means a lot.
what a variety of formats and aesthetic results!
I did love all of those pictures... thanks for share this great day under the sun, the rusty subjects are always a pleasure to see ;)
DanielRVmusic thank you very much!
I began my photo road with 35mm film 22 years ago and now the hurries of work forces to me to use sensor, but your videos and work inspire me to get back -exclusively- to film and I maybe use 120mm... I wish I could use both systems but "the economy thing" force me to make one choice... maybe some day ;) my best regards to you Nick!
very nice 👍📷😎
😢 i can't follow the colours, sir. I usually can't watch at light on my mobile. Hopefully one day I'll be Ur student for real and learn. I'm with dim light and yellowish screen ... 🤭🤭🤭🤭 But colours look gopd to me, anyways 🤭🤭🤭🤭 btw... U don't drink milk shakes or coffee? ☕ In the mornings? 😕
That’s jacks gas station! I used to live up there! He closed that place around 1999 or 2000 after what happened to him there! Miss that place!
Those polaroid shots were so fuckin nice man. Good work.
Thanks man!
Excellent video! Where do you get your film processed? Colors are wondeful!
libertyranger10 I go to a lab here in Orange County called pro photo connection.
Awesome, thank you!
Why wouldn't you hang it on your wall. SUNSETS are da bomb! Especially the ones that make you go WHOOOOOOA! Not sure I'd hang an old building on my wall....anyhow nice stuff!
Mamiya looks like that sony toy ,love magnific RZ/RB 67!!!!
Fantastic photographs and stunning place!
Hello Nick
Great to see the use of film. I’ve been considering either a Mamiya RB67 or C220 for a while. I have Polaroid’s taken nearly 40yrs ago and they look great. Remember getting the Polaroid Land camera with very expensive film for my Christmas. Went out and very carefully composed and focused (lovely big glass lens on front). Expose, pull out photo, place between the metal folder provided. Keep warm between hands then peel negative off. Fantastic. There was no depth of field so all near object photos had an out of focus background which looks great. Something I’m applying more to my work now. Your work is great and thanks for sharing.
Happy New Year
Barrie
Dude your style reminds me of Daytripper, nice video. I shot 35MM on an Olympus OMG and PrakTiSix IIa. Shot DSLR on a Canon T6i.
I am simple person. See the Nick - click the Like
Mikhail Fomin all good rules for living.
Funny story: I'm mixing the sound of a campaign about Andalucía and I've extracted the shutter sound of your camera from this video for your segment in Tabernas :D
Very nice Nick…never get tired on watching your videos man! I’m in the brink on buying a Mamiya RB67 SD for my collection! Stay safe…Cheers!
Hey I really enjoy you videos I feel like I'm there with you. if you're ever in Fort Worth Texas area, you might come by and see my 3D pictures I take in transparency , with my RB67 cameras you wouldn't believe.
Hi Nick. Can I ask what sort of camera plate you're using on the 617? Thinking of incorporating 617 into my mix, and all of my current gear uses RRS clamps and plates.
Every film photographer “I hope that looks good” haha!
Another great video Nick, just love those 16 x 7’s, you use the space so well. It’s so good to see you using a light meter, pity other photographers on Y T don’t take the time!!, I’m sure the quality of their pic’s would improve!! 👍✅😎
What film did you use for the old building? Fuji? How did you get them so bright an airy? Over-exposing? Great images. Im trying to decide between an RZ67 and a 7!
May I ask what kind of spot meter you use?
Devon Saunders Pentax Digital Spot Meter.
Hey Nick, very entertaining, inspiring and educational/instructive film/work!!! many thanks ...
Great vlog mate, I just love watching your videos some really nice exposures
Very awesome video. I don't understand film being that I've only ever shot digital but this was super fun to watch.
You can’t really appreciate the rz67 for the tank that it is until you are holding it in your hands. When you watch videos you’re like, “yeah…it’s a little bit bigger than my mamiya 645 pro” Understatement 😂
Not certain why, but I really dig the shot at 9:15. I think it's because there's still a presence there, simply the chair, waiting, doesn't make it feel truly abandoned.
Anyway I loved this video. There's something so desolately magical about that place. Closest I've ever been is Nevada, and things are somewhat different here in damp and cloudy Wales. For my money, I think the Portra edges the Velvia. Both are great, but Portra has more of a real satisfying slow burn. Please keep it up and may your snack breaks ever be satisfying.
I would love to have that RZ67!! Have looked unsuccessfully and worried about buying from out of country ((
Very consistent work. I would hang it on my wall ;)
Roberto Herrera Peres thank you! That's what I like to hear.
Thanks another excellent video. That is a slick focusing cloth not to big. I'd like to get one for my Speed Graphic just in case. What model was that cloth?
Portra is so nice. Love all those shots
Bill Pickle yeah it's a great film. And thank you.
Maybe a dumb question but if you had to pick one MF 6x7 body would you grab an RB67 of some ilk, or spot the extra cash for the RZ67 line?
Absolutely fascinating Nick. Really interesting seeing all those cameras, film types, and techniques. Totally different from what I do. Oh, and you can't beat that McDonald's breakfast. Thanks for sharing. :-)
I'm done with McDonalds. Twenty years I've heard that beeper in the kitchen. No more.
great video. You should have gone for one more shot with kodak portra with split ND. i think the sky is a bit bright.
what do you use to scan your 120 film :0? Incredible stuff, as always!
sapphireflyer thank you! I use an Epson V750 with SilverFast software.
l really liked the poloroid sx70 palette, super nice, the faded out colour l really like. The location screamed black and white to me and the patterns in the sunset sky later on would of worked wonderfully well in BW Film, kodak TMax would of been great with the medium and large format camera's.
I always enjoy seeing your use of the RZ67. I have an old RB67 and it is so much fun use. Very slow, step by step process, but the results can be very satisfying.
Excellent , also the video of the highway from the shiny door panels at 7.40. It was god seeing the trains roll by. And at 8.03 the sign push it a stop means another conventional celluloid user has been there . I'm just going to see if I can find out where you were.
Your polaroid work is great man.
Thank you very much.
Hey buddy I love your videos and your work. By the way what wireless mic system are you using?
shew ..film ..did you have to ...now I'm going to end up watching all of your shen zen videos...hum-da-drum so chilled so good : - )
Love your video, and subscribed right way. Have a question, what kind of Polaroid films you use?
I'm a black & white photographer but i admit your color pic's are stunning! Like them alot...
Cool video! But jesus are we supposed to pretend you didn't just shoot like $300 in film lol. I wish I had your budget.
very jealous of all your film cameras - would love to delve more into film, but sadly do not seem to have the money to do it as often as I would like. maybe sometime in the future, the option to go all film (or at least 95% film) will become a possibility...
Hi Nick been looking for Mamiya tilt shift adapter forever, would you tell me make and supplier? loved the video never have to many cameras especially when you don't have to carry them lol. John
17:14 that is, by far the best photo out of the bunch. the composition and shift in tones from left to right is wonderful.
My favourite part of the video was the "eating lunch" montage
Where can I buy an adapter to de-center the lens like the one you are using on your RZ 67 camera for my Mamiya RB 67 Pro S camera? Thanks.
Nick, another great video thanks mate! I am intrigued by the pano film camera, especially when you said you wouldn't point the camera up but lift the lens. How does that actually work? I have only ever used cameras where there is a straight line through the lens and onto the film or sensor. Perhaps you could do a video to explain that, and cover any other idiosyncrasies of that camera and others like it? Regards Jordy
I see you keep your films in a transportable cool box. Question: Doesn't it damage the films if you put them in the camera when they are cool? I'm asking this because it's been said over and over again that you should let the film you've taken out of the fridge sit at normal temperatures for a few hours before you put it in the camera.
Used an Rz every day for years with 2 big pelican cases. I dont miss it at all! Still have some blads , leicas and a linhof but never put film through them. Now its a little mirrorless that out performs them all. Sad in a way but my back is happier.
I'm a huge fan of 6x6 I love just sticking stuff right in the middle because it looks awesome with 6x6 :D
Awesome video and shots!!!!
That was a fun video Nick, and really interesting. Thanks for sharing your film adventures.
I actually carried an RB67, 3 lenses and tripod on a 5 day backpacking in the Wind Rivers once. Not recommended. I did get a few nice photos, though.
But you work with Film is super cool. I haven't done anything with film since the 80's
Classic video one of my new faves. Thanks for making this episode.
The one you said you wouldn't hang on your wall... I would probably hang that on a wall. Colors are nice
Wow the Sunset was epic! And the shot I word take si the one with the od House and the loooong Train behind you’re back when you bump your Camera
was that tilt shift adapter very expensive...? I'm guessing so...
I know the feeling of kicking a tripod like that! Sure is frustrating when you have everything else ready. For the 6x17 shots, I definitely prefer the portra shots because of the softer color palette. I enjoyed the video as always Nick! Always top quality content!
Ben Horne thanks a lot, Ben! Yeah the more I look at them the more I like the softer colors of Portra, too.
Thank Heaven! An American with a sense of humour! Really loved this video as I took a break from editing umpteen squillion pictures from my XT-2 of the Galapagos. It's dangerous for me though to watch this sort of stuff as I'll start wanting to shoot film again and I thought I'd kicked the habit... Cheers from a damp and soggy UK.
sfbdotcom haha - yeah everyone seems to take themselves too seriously around here.
Stunning work Nick Carver. Thanks for posting it.
Mark Bray thank you for watching!
awesome vid! this might be stupid since you probably wrote this somewhere else, but what lightmeter are you using? thanks and cheers
