  • I had to see if it could dial in the tones according to photos of James' rig from the 80s (specifically the MoP tone)... Does it sound like Metallica?
    it crunched

The Main thing from this era was not Marshall Amps, this is considered a misconception nowdays. Rather the trick for Master + Justice tones, are Mesa boogie Amps with Marshall cabs with v30s, if you check Rasmussen's notes on mark 2C++ settings and if you have any IR's of Marshalls with V30's (I think you can find these all around) you can get pretty close. There are also IR's specifically for the Metallica tones of each album if you want to get very close, but exact album tones are too processed. For Black album tones they used loads of equipment, but you can get very close with the same Mark 2C++ amp but using mesa boogie Cab IR's (I think with V30's again but not 100% sure) Also try Quad tracking for all of the above and you will get very close. Also as a sidenote, the tone you managed here might not sound like the album, but has the same type of distortion and similar harmonic responses, which is what an amp does. Most of the tone of a guitar comes from cab+speaker+mic combination. Happy sound engineering! :D Looking forward to updated video!

Firstly, it is important to find the right microphones, secondly, to find out what kind of cabinet it was, plus Metallica used a layering of 6 guitar tracks and equalizers for the final album sound.

I tried to recreate the MOP sound with plugins and it only worked when I replaced the Ampltube 5 amp with this one.

yeh the marshall slave would make it sound super cool. i think james used a lot of tracks also

I’m sure it was quad tracked and slaved too! But hey, at least it had some cronch

The settings on the graphical EQ looks so weird alone...sounds pretty strange to me. 🤷🏻‍♂

That picture was from his live rig. Eq settings pretty far off what they used on the studio… Simple google search shows flemmings settings. Also, you’re on the plus model, hetfields crunch berries was a ++.

I’ve been getting a lot of corrections recently, so it’s probably in my best interest to make a correction video. I appreciate comments like these!

While you cant slave an amp on PC the same, I wonder if you got a capture of a preamp only like in Tonex or something then ran it in the Two Notes Wall of Sound, I wonder if that would give you similar results. Might have to try it. I think you are at least going to have to double track it to get close to Master of Puppets.

I tried the same settings in the axf and doesn't work too, I think they use different eq settings and they just moved it for the picture.

I don't think anything was moved after the photo was taken, studios are really tight about consistency. It's most likely due to three reasons:
      1. The Mesa Boogie was slaved with a Marshall JCM800 which changed the tone a bit.
      2. The album was quad tracked (two recordings on the left and right, panned accordingly)
      3. I didn't notice it, but the amp has "live" written on it, which means it was most likely the live tone. Guess I gotta make a follow-up video + follow the other tones?

The two last band on the eq should be wrong, they use a v shape, on the pictures they cut all high and that don't make sense, this is why I think maybe they just moved the ew for the picture

@@jesuislm I think that would be weird if they just messed with somebody’s amp setting just for a photo, so I don’t think it’s likely… but hey, I could be wrong!

@@sadistdog I use a real Mark V 25 as my main amp, and a V shape on the eq does get me the closest to Metallica tone, I even throw in my Empress Para EQ if I am being really picky.

@@masterofreality230 I was informed recently it’s most likely a V shaped EQ and some other external EQs, so it’s possible the photo in the video was live settings and not studio settings

Try adding a bit more presence.
One thing that makes a big difference, at least with the real amps, is using actual EMGs vs passive pickups.

it sounds identical to an iic+, you just cant expect to easily get an exact metallica tone out of it since there was a lot more to it
