Thank you for featuring my creation. The weights on the ends are actually more necessary than you think. If you don't have them the whole thing will flip up into the air after a single step. Also a resent patch seams to have fixed the problem of it exploding if pasted in when the legs aren't in the right position. That's why your were able to copy past it mid stride.
How could I not feature it man.. that thing is amazing :) Thanks for entering with it! Good to hear the patches are fixing some issues also.. I just loved that you'd found a way around those issues and then built it into the system :)
@thomashubel9368 Theo Jansen said he wants his creations to live on in other people and you sir are doing just that. Always been fascinated with the Strandbeests and love, but never played, Space Engineers. A combination that just had to happen. Thank you.
I'm torn between admiration for the amazing implementation, the impressive design, and trepidation at the nightmarish prospect of seeing one of these walking towards me.
The original is nuts.. and seeing it in SE is doubly so.. Nice work Mr Tchubel! Hope I did it some justice allbeit in a slightly stupid way heh Also, let's see a like for recording 4k footage and downscaling to 1080p to stop the pistons & rotors looking like a pixelly mess! :)
And i was all proud of myself that i got a 5th wheel/compensator setup to work for an articulated truck ... Lets just ignore the fact that every time the drill on trailer i built makes contact with voxels, the entire machine violently explodes in 5 different directions and then breaks the world to boot ...
Ive seen a guy make a strandbeest on twitch over a couple of days, that ran with only 1 rotor powered, since power efficiency of this design is its best feature, he was going to put a base on top of it the last time i saw it =D so if you really want to you can do it yourself, you can even make an autopilot for it and build your base while it walks to a new location =)
This is insane :D i want them farming trees and keeping enemies at bay, no one will dare to shoot at them, imagine if 1 single piston detach? 10/10 metal gear is jelly
I remember watching Theo Jansen's presentation on TED a couple of years ago. I've always found his "strandbeest" contraptions extremely fascinating. I wonder what became of all that.
W4stedspace - Jon as one of the grand prize winners from last time, i have to give my vote (for what it is worth LOL) to this design, to me, for someone to beat this they would have to come up with something really special, this is an amazing design, and as you say not least because it was taken from a real world design, i have known about Theo Jansen's Standbeets for a while and never thought for i would ever see one in SE, to me this is Space Engineering at it's best, WELL DONE TO tchubel for making this and for making it work so well in SE........
We need some with AI, get them to wander around and turn when they reach uneven terrain or obstructions. Maybe get them to stay in herds? That would be awesome.
that... ... is truly insane. that's something you build on paper and run complex math on over the course of weeks before you even think about the game itself. this person needs more to do in his daily life.
O.o........... What!? SE has come a long ways and content creators are now pushing the boundries of real life engineering challenges in game . It won't be long before SE is a required college class at this rate
how the hell has clang not killed this thing i was planing to enter a solar array but every time i tried to make the rotors work it killed space engineers any way i don't think anything can beat this thing gg to him
I have always loved the original ones in Holland and have seen them live for just that reason. I still plan on getting my hands on a 3D printer and making one of the ones that were designed for exactly that. The 3D printed one comes out in 1 piece and only needs to have a propeller put on the front to work -- no assembly required, which boggles my mind. I have a hard time imagining more impressive things in this competition, but I guess something which has a function will be able to impress too.
Unfortunately that is not how 3D Printers work. At least all of the ones that I have heard of can only print out solid pieces (no functioning joints in a single printed part). You can still assemble the pieces after they are printed though; it is just a bit more labor intensive.
Awesome you got to see one IRL :) And that sounds like a pretty impressive 3D print, I'd love to see how it works! I think there's still a few surprises left for the comp!
Tom B Thanks for you comment. I am somewhat less thankful, that you didn't take the time to google "3D printed strandbeest" before commenting, though. No worries, I got your back: 3dprintingindustry.com/news/3d-printed-strandbeest-new-version-3751/ A random one of the top search results, that links to a guy who made a version for 3d printing (Not quite the one I want to have myself). Description snippet: "This 3D printed creature is composed of 122 individual parts and has 20 separate legs that move in sequence - all printed as one piece without any assembly work." Have a great sunday :)
I have a crazy idea, if this thing doesn't get smitten by clang immediately in multiplayer, then maybe you can stick a turret and a second seat on 2 of these beests and fight each other since they sort of control like tanks(not really but you get what I mean). Oh and a rule : no auto turrets, so you need a second pilot to operate it or have a single pilot who has to change between piloting the machine and turret control
TheRexDark while it is stable, I doubt it will be able to carry a massive refinery, an assembler and a cargo container. Well, unless you PERFECTLY distribute the weight evenly, which you can't really do with a refinery where I have no idea where the center of mass is on that thing
the thing is that those legs can be used like "normal legs" in se. In reallife this thing is designed to run on wind energy but in se we have powered rotors so we can just take 4 or 6 of those leg assemblies and use them as walker legs
Wasted, this artifact must go on your season 2 of group survival! it would be absolutely fantastic! (mind the MP explosions on pistons, im sure it can even be a running gag)
i tried this once, a long time ago before pistons. seeing as the distances have to be ratios of eachother, it had to be much bigger. it barely worked, but it kind of did work! i never got as far as this though, i think i made 1 semi-functional leg before giving up
I want to put an artillery gun on top or maybe a mac cannon. Admit it, seeing an armored walker with a giant cannon is terrifying. Useless? Yeah, sure. Fun? >:D
One guy is not beliving it actually works XD I love that thing, If I scale it up a bit I could recreate Howls moving Castle from the Anime movie. It would look a bit different, but definitly badass :D
his code could be very useful for other things in SE (with case specific changes to it). he should write a general purpose version of it that can be modified to individual uses.
Well... That design is... interesting :P I can see this being sent to the finals instantly >.< Any more crazy stuff to come? Or have you not viewed it all yet?
I want to get two of these with a bit of distance between them and build a base on top of both of them so that my base can slowly walk. one strandbeast at the front and one at the back to balance it
First of all, this is impresive design.Second, how did you make that deep voice at begining? And third thing, I guess I misunderstood point of this competition, I mostly went for how it looks....well I know for next time I guess
I can picture Potatoes seeing one of them.... although I can't imagine what Word he/she/it would use to describe it... But I'm certain Potatoes might have a vitual nervous breakdown :)
Wait... How is it able to be copy and pasted? All my rotor machines paste with the block touching the rotor head missing. Is there a workaround or specific way to build it so it doesn't happen? I am confuse.
we are still waiting for revamped multiplayer code, sooo yeah. chill your jets dude.Once a beast like the one wasted is showing off can take combat fire and Not destroy all of creation would be nice.
w4stedspace The things were actually a smash hit on my channel. I made another drone because at the time I was just messing with drones, and I called it "Heck in a Handbasket". It was like a basket with devil horns and a big gun on the top. Once they rammed into the back of each other, the bits knocked off were targeted and everybody started shooting them. They just blew each other up and it was hilarious. Might make a vid on that.
There a reason I have multiple categories :) Means plenty of options left! Not even sure which I'm gonna stick this one into yet, it's actually kinda functional even though it's technically more of a concept! Understand it's hard getting subs but yeah, bringing it up in comments on other channels is really not the way to do it man :) Ofc no issue with mentioning the vid, but that's all 3 replies now with something in :P
w4stedspace also sometimes it requires someone else's touch. That's how I gained 76 subs in a day. Could I also make a super late entry? I just had a great idea for an autonomous shuttle
This actually makes me so angry. I built an awesome planet/space drop-ship with two flaps for aesthetics. With only 2 working rotors and 2 rotors for support, the thing glitches out for no reason and explodes all copies of it when I copy/paste it. How is it that this thing doesn't explode constantly or destroy half the planet when you copy/pasted it. So frustrating.
Aidan303 let me tell you. This person is not just lucky or something. I can say with decent confidence, that the first 1000 times he tried this, it immediately exploded. But, through much frustration and Lots of work, he got it to work.
I bet a game designer is going "what the absolute f*ck"
you are right... i did say that
Am I the only one that read that in GradeAUnderA's voice?
Thank you for featuring my creation.
The weights on the ends are actually more necessary than you think. If you don't have them the whole thing will flip up into the air after a single step.

Looks like you have a few fans sir, lol :) I'm not the only one that thinks this is awesome
@thomashubel9368 Theo Jansen said he wants his creations to live on in other people and you sir are doing just that.
Always been fascinated with the Strandbeests and love, but never played, Space Engineers. A combination that just had to happen.
Thank you.
I find this thing disturbingly stable........
Also I find the 'planet earth' style beginning narration to be hilarious. A+
;)
Not luck, Keen.
-Just Worse.
I'm torn between admiration for the amazing implementation, the impressive design, and trepidation at the nightmarish prospect of seeing one of these walking towards me.
he has sold his soul and his family souls to clang to get this thing together.
He made it work... but at what cost?! AT WHAT COST DAMMIT!
***** could you make morph use it? I just want to see this thing explode
morph wont even need to touch it, he will begin loading the world and it will explode....morph is the herald of clang.
Mike A. morph is clang in human form.
To build something like this in real life is madness. There are no words for a mind capable of building something like this in Space Engineers...
The original is nuts.. and seeing it in SE is doubly so.. Nice work Mr Tchubel! Hope I did it some justice allbeit in a slightly stupid way heh
Also, let's see a like for recording 4k footage and downscaling to 1080p to stop the pistons & rotors looking like a pixelly mess! :)

o...my.... god. That is the single more rediculously complex device I've seen in SE.
amazing!!! how are you going to present the theory/ write ins, like what i did? i emailed you something i thought of and im curious how that will work
Ive seen a guy make a strandbeest on twitch over a couple of days, that ran with only 1 rotor powered, since power efficiency of this design is its best feature, he was going to put a base on top of it the last time i saw it =D so if you really want to you can do it yourself, you can even make an autopilot for it and build your base while it walks to a new location =)
HOW?!?!?!?
This is insane :D i want them farming trees and keeping enemies at bay, no one will dare to shoot at them, imagine if 1 single piston detach? 10/10 metal gear is jelly
I honestly think that workshop items should have rewards awarded to them because this would win "The Most Innovative Creation" award!
I've seen Strandbeests in real life before, I can attest to their awesomeness! The creator did an awesome job!

Crazy stuff like this is why I love Space Engineers. Such a brilliant piece of engineering, but I don't think I'll be building one anytime soon.
well yeah, you'd have to sacrifice your firstborn to the unholy Clang....
WOW... this is insane. Completely blows away what I was going to do before I had IRL problems.
so cool, love seeing engineering stuff in space engineers
This is FREAKING SPECTACULAR.
this would be an insta win for me once we can vote for it
In the words of Lord Shaxx- THIS IS AMAZING!!!
O.o........... What!? SE has come a long ways and content creators are now pushing the boundries of real life engineering challenges in game . It won't be long before SE is a required college class at this rate
Such a gifted Techpriest, but I'm afraid any man who has such a way with the machine spirits is undoubtedly guilty of heresy!
Hey W4sted, would it be ok if I add this video to the seam workshop page for the Strandbeest?
You'd be more than welcome sir.. it's about your creation after all!
Obviously, this entry is the winner!
how the hell has clang not killed this thing
i was planing to enter a solar array but every time i tried to make the rotors work it killed space engineers
any way i don't think anything can beat this thing gg to him
Why I always have multiple categories :) One guy can't just 'win' everything!
This... is a gift from lord clang to he's loyal servants
HAIL CLANG DARK LORD OF HORRIBLE NOISES IN SE
I have always loved the original ones in Holland and have seen them live for just that reason. +Tom B You can 3d print moving parts, there is a very small amount of the plastic in between the 2 but that breaks away instantly upon first motion.
Tom B Thanks for you comment. I am somewhat less thankful, that you didn't take the time to google "3D printed strandbeest" before commenting, though.
No worries, I got your back:
3dprintingindustry.com/news/3d-printed-strandbeest-new-version-3751/

Have a great sunday :)
My god. They finally did it. They've created a weapon to surpass metal gear
well.....pute four of these on 4 corner of a square formation, and build a castle on top of it XD (a japaness one of course, because onimusha 3)
Imagine seeing this walking at night... creepy
Huehuehue *awesome
Brilliant!!!
In the words of w4sted, "Um, which bit of spaghetti am I on?"
my God that's brilliantand plausible as all terrain
Would love to see this in the new season of multi-player!
this guy could be a real mechanical enginer
he probably is because otherwise this isn't possible :P
I have a crazy idea, if this thing doesn't get smitten by clang immediately in multiplayer, then maybe you can stick a turret and a second seat on 2 of these beests and fight each other since they sort of control like tanks(not really but you get what I mean). Begs the question as to whether one can scale the design up or not without the design failing. Maybe this will work on a large block design, too.
just build a large ship version
oh, and the heavy blocks on the front and back are for balance, so that means it is just about balanced
the thing is that those legs can be used like "normal legs" in se. In reallife this thing is designed to run on wind energy but in se we have powered rotors so we can just take 4 or 6 of those leg assemblies and use them as walker legs
Imagine having a giant walking base using two of these, one at the front and back
Wasted, this artifact must go on your season 2 of group survival! it would be absolutely fantastic! (mind the MP explosions on pistons, im sure it can even be a running gag)
Very impressive though I can imagine the logistics......someone buy that guy a drink
This better win
I'd love to see a couple of these placed together to form some kind of walking tank platform.
I think that would a site to see.
applying that with a gyroscope, you could make a space engineers horse!
Now I want to see wedge drive one!
Genius
i tried this once, a long time ago before pistons. seeing as the distances have to be ratios of eachother, it had to be much bigger. it barely worked, but it kind of did work! i never got as far as this though, i think i made 1 semi-functional leg before giving up
These things with artillery or base (maybe a castle?) mounted on them would be sick. Not sure if it could stay balanced though.
Tchubel is a master piston tamer.
that is amazing it go my vote
this needs to get worked into the GS Show.
It would look a bit different, but definitly badass :D
the piston whisperer!
Winner
his code could be very useful for other things in SE (with case specific changes to it). he should write a general purpose version of it that can be modified to individual uses.
A winner! I am still trying to check my se crash all the time it seams everyone is playing
Well... That design is... interesting :P I can see this being sent to the finals instantly >.< Any more crazy stuff to come? Or have you not viewed it all yet?
turn it into a combat vehicle!
It already is... shoot it and the world explodes :P
LOL! time to test this!
I want to get two of these with a bit of distance between them and build a base on top of both of them so that my base can slowly walk. one strandbeast at the front and one at the back to balance it

But I'm certain Potatoes might have a vitual nervous breakdown :)
Now to make a lotus version
I rely want to see a herd of thees in a field as the thunder dome and baneblade roles by
Very Very disappointed in that person who disliked the video
O.O (Space Marine)
KILL THE XENOS
Wait... How is it able to be copy and pasted? All my rotor machines paste with the block touching the rotor head missing. Is there a workaround or specific way to build it so it doesn't happen? I am confuse.
Howly shit... THAT IS COOL!
well someone sacrificed his first born, slaved away his wife ad sold his soul to Clang to make this work... :D
Wow
So are you going to ride this into battle in the survival series?
Now try this on a dedicated server and watch it glitch about.
wow
i wonder if legs like that would work on a quadraped or biped...
Anyone got a link to two of them fused together. Walking fortress?
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner
how has clang not brought judgment down upon this creation?
i want to put a landing pad on its ba ck and let it just be some derpy roaming resupply pad
Damn... someone beat me to Theo Jansen...
how can i send in a creation for the planet comp?
Too late for that. The deadline was about a month ago
oh okay :( anyways i built a SCV if anyone is interested steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=782080490
Wait......CONNECT TWO OF THEM AND MAKE A WALKING BASE ON TOP OF IT!
and then, the planet exploded. Oh well?........
***** All according to plan!
P0TAT0_CANN0N Hmmmm.... An walking automatic death star! Cool! (also, nice RP reference.)
MAKE A STRANDBEEST-TANK!!!
There wasn't much WastedSpace in it.
Wait, its all pistons?
Always has been
@w4stedspace When is space engineers out on xbox because I'm getting tired of waiting and keen haven't said a thing which pissed me off
It is on their to do list but it is the very last thing on it. I think it will be put on XBox right before they go to fully launched.
we are still waiting for revamped multiplayer code, sooo yeah. chill your jets dude.Once a beast like the one wasted is showing off can take combat fire and Not destroy all of creation would be nice.
Could we build 4 legs mec with this legs conf ?
I suspect it'd fall over tbh.. system is mostly designed for lots of legs, haven't seen one with fewer than 8 so far
With landing gears at bottom, well timed perhaps.
Hi
a rotor attached to a piston attached to a wheel?!?!? are you trying to rip a hole in space/time!!!!!!
David Magee don't forget, there is also landing gears on pistons! :o
I kind of want to Hut off the extra legs and make this thing a4 leg walker. Just to see if I could.
I wanna weaponize it now lol
***** YES
How did you get Jeremy Clarkson to do voice overs?
I thought I would win with my oddball entry, The Oddball. So sad now.
EDIT: Video on my channel
Those things are pretty fun tbh :) Enjoyed the video also
w4stedspace The things were actually a smash hit on my channel. Might make a vid on that.
w4stedspace And W4sted, next year can we have a Drone category? I've been hooked in making them. Also a sub to my channel always helps
It has 176 pistons
Seems stable enough; Anyone care to build a mobile base on the back of the beast?
***** They're totally vibe, dude!
Seriously man, you should consider voice acting.
What the fuck?!?!?
one person missed the like button.
As of now anyway.
Strand - BAYST
Not "Beast"
And now I feel useless in the SE-Community for only designing one flimsy ship that's not even good... Awesome build though.
Now if only someone can make an actually good working mech :/
