- Dragon Ball Dissection December begins with Sugoroku Space! Goku has to roll the dice to get out of this weird purgatory dimension that even the gods can't help with. It's randomness all around as he deals with chestnut puns, naughty nurses, and, worst of all... SPACE TANUKI! Also, Pan gets it in her head that what will really turn the tide of battle is compulsory pooping. Everything is weird. Enough said.

The baby arc started out pretty decent but this stuff with Goku in the casino was such a fever dream.

The whole grinding coffee for bringing the tail back, and the follow-up is simply some of the weirdest, out of context, out of nowhere insanity the franchise has ever had.
As a kid/young adult I always heard family members say that drinking black coffee would “put hair on your chest.” And there’s a cultural thing, at least in the West, that liking coffee is mature and eventually your distaste for the bitterness goes away as you get older. I’m not sure if these ideas are in Japan as well, but maybe Goku being mature by engaging in coffee is what makes his tail grow? And his butt just itches as his tail is coming in? Total guess partly to make UA-cam dispense treats, but there it is
Adult Saiyans can't grow their tails, so making Goku more mature would only get in the way of growing his tail.
I refuse to believe there is not some sort of cultural joke we are missing.

The episode of Goku playing the board game is one of the few episodes of the whole franchise I actually caught on TV as a young child. Always stuck with me due to how weird it was.

Always wondered if the Suguroku Space plot was one of the cut scripts from the first half of the arc. It also serves the purpose of having someone be able to become pliers…except the kais do have matter creation abilities so I guess they wouldn’t need that?
Also I really wish the laxative plan had worked. It would have been so dumb but also really silly.
It feels very out of place in this arc which is supposed to be a lot darker than the black star hunt arc,GT is all over the place in terms of tone sometimes especially once it gets to the more serious stuff,tonal whiplash is real.
Man, I can't believe it's already been a full year since the first Dissection video of GT and we're approaching the final episodes of the Baby arc. I'm hoping that the Baby arc will end by the time 2023 ends that way we can start 2024 by talking about the latter half of GT, it's gonna be really interesting to hear your thoughts on them.

My best guess is that Baby learned about both DB's from taking over the Dragon team and Dende. Upon learning about both he decided that waiting for the heroes to return to use the world ending Black Star balls would be like a get back at the saiyans as now he will destroy their (adopted) home world like how they did to his people in a way.
Also if he wished Planet Tuffle back in the same way he does in the series (being in Earth's orbit/close enough to be seen by earth) it would tip the heroes off to early when they roll up to earth seeing a random new planet that wasn't there before.
Now, why he didn't use both sets for an extra wish or two, I have no idea

I wonder if the infected Baby people opening their mouths when something gets their attention is a reference to the 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers movie, where when a body snatcher sees an unaffected individual, they open their mouths and point at them. Bit of a stretch but given Baby is a body snatcher character, who knows? lol
I've always liked this micro-arc because it's just so fun and funny and helped by the fact it's a limbo-esque place which is always interesting imo

Man, this arc really does feel like a slow one. Random filler like that really doesn't help...but I must admit, I am intrigued to finally see the end of this arc. Which I assume we'll reach before the end of DBD December...I mean, I hope so... >_>
Well to be fair there is no filler in GT because there was no manga they were working from. It was just a slow, weird part of the story.

If I remember correctly, Suguroku was also the name of Yugi's grandpa in the Japanese version of Yu-Gi-Oh, which is fitting considering he runs a game store.
His game store is nothing. Sugoroku used to be a world class gambler going through all kinds of cursed ruins, ancient games and tough equally legendary opponents all over the world.

@@Morgil27 million times is an understatement. God I hate how they butchered DDM arc and essentially got rid of the best part of Sugoroku's backstory. Tho it's not the worst change of that adaptation by far. At least soundtrack is decent.
@@kindlingking My surprise in finding out little Yugi was the one who beat Duke at a game he had never played before with considerably higher stakes by comparison really made me respect his ability so much more. It honestly made me look back on how the anime did it in much less regard just having Yami do it, and it's not really as special because we expect that from Yami, not little Yugi.
Does anyone else think that Pan’s moment of despair would’ve been a good time to have her transform into a Super Saiyan so she could be a tad more useful? And that not doing so is a massive waste for her? And that the explanation of “Toriyama doesn’t know how to draw a female Super Saiyan” is dumb and bull?
I would. Pan getting an SSJ transformation done as well as the old Z ones would've done a good deal to make the fandom accept her more. On top of, you know, helping blunt the "Goku always must come in b/c his friends can't do anything" by having SSJ Pan and Uub actually DO something.

Hot take, but I have been of the mind for a while that we might have misunderstood Toriyama. I think he might actually have been literal when he said he didn't know how to draw one- because at that time, there weren't any! And when Pan was introduced to the series, the manga ended 2 chapters later. There wasn't even enough time for it to be a gag. He barely did anything for GT outside the basic designs for characters at the very start, so he had no control over if Toei made Pan a Super Saiyan or not.
And hell, there still aren't any female Super Saiyans to this day, disregarding the Universe 6 Saiyans. We've gotten plenty of new male Saiyans- Tarble, Cumber, NüBroly, NüParagus, Shallot, and Giblet (and maybe NüBardock). We've gotten strong female characters, most notably Android 21 who was even the big main villain of FighterZ. But outside of the very weak and very much dead Gine, we never got any more U7 Saiyans. Plus Pan and Bra have never transformed in Heroes in the 13 years that subseries has existed. I hate to say it, but we're probably never getting a U7 Super Saiyan woman outside Xenoverse (and technically Note).

Still would have been wonderful to have, but let's not kid ourselves: Pan probably jobs first, then gets saved by Uub, who becomes Majuub, and since he jobs harder, all the fans would read out of it is "Super Saiyan Pan was such a wasted concept. She's not even as strong as Uub!"
Eh, idk, i feel like she would have been wasted as well even if she did transform, if even the fusion between Uub and Buu got wasted, which got way more hype than a transformation that has frankly lost it's shine by this point in the series, Pan becoming SSJ wouldn't even put her on the level of SSJ Gohan let alone Baby.

When it comes to the whole coffee grinding thing, I always thought that the Elder Kai just needed Goku to do a strenuously repetitive task in order to stimulate his tail to start sprouting.
I never thought it had to be coffee, just really anything that required labor in which Goku was mostly stationary.
I don't really have proof of that or have any explanation of why it works like that, that's just always the impression that I got.
Maybe because I remember always itching whenever I had to stand in one place and clean or work on something as a kid. Yeah, that's probably why.
The only cultural thing I can think of is that there are some coffees made out of monkey poop. Monkeys will eat the raw coffee beans and when they poop them out, they're imbued with flavors from their stomach's that makes some of the greatest coffee on the planet. I have no idea why humans decided to try grinding up and eating monkey pooped coffee beans, but we did.
The only thing I can think of with the coffee grinder is a monkey and an organ grinder.
I think that's too far of a stretch.

Regarding Goku not knowing about sugoroku space, given the requirements to reach such limbo dimension seem so obscure and not even the kais can't access that dimension, i think it's fine for him to not know about it, to me it looks like he spent the entirety of those 7 years training with other dead martial artists from heaven rather than focusing on learning stuff about the after life itself, he doesn't seem to care much about that.

I had the Sugoroku episode on a DVD as a kid and it's still one of the only GT episodes I've ever watched. I only ever watched it once though and my readthroughs of GT plot synopses often skip over this episode, so it always felt like a random fever dream until seeing you go over it today

For me, the Suguroku World fails because it kind of misses the point of "Dragon Ball"'s best comedy, which either helps to reveal Character or else subverts Expectations. We don't really HAVE Expectations of what Sugoroku Zone is going to be going into it, and as Fusion points out, "Dragon Ball"'s afterlife in general has long been one of its wackier elements, so it being A Wacky Place isn't terribly surprising or particularly fresh. The closest it comes to doing anything Character-related is the bit with The Chi-Chi Nurse, and while it IS nice to know that Goku's sex life is more adventurous than I would have necessarily guessed, I admit it falling back on Toei's extra-shrewish portrayal of Chi-Chi doesn't exactly endear me to it. What that leaves with you, then, is a bunch of One Damned Thing After Another gags that are cute enough as far as they go (like Fusion, I do appreciate the "kuri/bikkuri/kuririn" bit) but also wear out their welcome fairly quickly.
By contrast, the stuff on Baby-Controlled Earth is probably my very favorite material in all of "GT", presenting a style of Tension that we've never really seen before in the franchise, wherein Sheer Force is just not an option because what few heroes remain free of Baby's control aren't strong enough to take on the literal Planet full of People he controls, and wouldn't want to risk harming a lot of those people anyway; Pan, Buu, and Mr. Satan having to play it Stealthy in order to follow along to Planet Tsufuru is really fun. The inconsistency of What Being Controlled By Baby means does remains frustrating (you can KIND OF explain the lack of recognition between characters if you want to stretch it by citing how Mr. Buu IS using "a disguise" and Blooma is primarily concerned with getting people on the ship, but neither explanation is particularly satisfying and it just means we miss out on some potentially interesting Character Stuff), but I genuinely like those moments where the characters seem to be Basically Themselves but with a switch having been flicked in their brains that makes them loyal to Baby; it's a very different sort of Mind Control than the norm, and it gives the whole scenario a unique and intriguing feel, AND it means when the characters DO go more Evil the way they do when, say, Videl attacks Pan, it's more Affecting.
Even though Super definitely has its flaws that I won’t argue with, things like the random gambling space and serendipitous tail pulling really feel out of left field and ruin the tension.
I do like that likely unintentional legacy connection between Pan and Bardock, that's neat, and if intentional, would be some clever implicit little nods to the past.

and it worked much better because Jotaro is an insane hardass and not a goober like Goku. and its the one time pre-DIO where he has an asspull without it feeling like one.

lol when I was a kid I thought the action of grinding coffee made your tail bone hurt, the way you move your arm to grind I guess since the tail bone is targeted by this action the tail would eventually start to ... pop out? that's what happens or at least starts to happen. I don't know, that's what I took from this when I was a kid.

All of this feels like leftover ideas from before they chose to make a hard right into fightville. The tone went from "all your friends and family have turned against you and you're about to die to a dark reflection of your most powerful move" to "ha ha lookit the funny monkey" and I just don't feel like they really put these in the right spot.

i interpret it as Baby getting revenge with a flavor of irony, one of Vegeta's grandparents had a major hand in the extinction of Baby's people, so he uses Vegeta to attempt the same with earth.

I think Baby waiting for them to get back home with the black star dragon balls instead of using the regular earth ones makes perfect sense for the character, it ain't weird at all. Baby was never a good person. Guy had no problem murdering indiscriminatedly, no problem possessing anone from any species, his claims at revenge are fishy (he isn't an actual Tuffle who had a normal life in planet Plant turned parasite, he was a sciencey creation from the start even before he made Myuu and his new body), and his final goal was to end all non-Tuffle life on the universe.
What Bab is is an egocentric sadistic little fuck who uses the "I'm just a victim, it is revenge for my people" schpiel as raw pure copium. Using the blackstar dragon balls works for his sadism on multiple layers (it is literally turning all the team's effort into dust, it puts the earth's destruction on a practically unstopable countadown they will suffer through if they even survive, eventually destroy the planet the saiyans now call home). If Baby had a penis, he would be ultra hard. No way he would chose the practical path and pass on that buffet.

I like the colors and design of Baby Vegeta. It's more threatening than Vegeta with white hair and markings in his eyes.
I know this is next time stuff, but they did Uub so dirty in this series. The second he even gets to do something cool that could potentially make a significant impact on the arcs for several supporting characters, he's just disposed of to give Goku another reason to be heckin' ready to whup butt. They don't even do anything with Majuub!
On top of that, we end up losing Boo as a result, a character who is far more entertaining and actually has been useful in this story.
My favorite time of year
I watched GT as a kid, and a lot of times, when a show doesn't explain something to kids, they just sort of fill in the gaps for themselves. Usually without much evidence at all.
That's why, when I watched these episodes of GT, I always imagined that the board game dimension was a entire dimension ran by godlike beings that represented luck and chance.
Maybe they're gods like the Kais who have their own section of the cosmos to govern.
That would explain why the Supreme Kai had no jurisdiction there, it was ruled by other Supreme Kai-like beings.
Especially when the board game voices found out that the guy was cheating, I just imagined that they saw that as a "sin" against their world and saught to purge it. (Kind of like how Zeno later purged the evil of Zamasu from the future timeline in Super)
Yeah, I don't know. It's weird, but definitely excited my imagination as a kid for what other dimensions could exist with god-like beings in control.

This was around the time i came back to GT properly after mostly abandoning it a few episodes in circa 2003 - This is probably my favourite set of epiosdes overall next to babys birth. Uubs return to the fight was pretty hype.
but what i really look forward to is goku making a comeback with tail, and going SSJ3, i'm a sucker for that form

I only know GT through osmosis, and I'd never heard of Sugoroku space or knew it was a thing in GT. Apparently people only remember GT for Omega Shenron, the black star dragon balls, and Super Saiyan 4, because no one ever brings up the weirder bits.
The weirder bits aren't conducive to being in a fighting game, so they're glossed over.

This really is the point where the arc goes to shit. Sugoroku Space is a fun little part (even if it isn't run by Sugoroku Muto), but it's pretty jarring after all that happened previously, and the introduction to the two most forgettable characters in all of Dragon Ball, meanwhile Pan just spinning her wheels on Earth until Oob's unceremonious return.
Also, in the Blue Water dub the game they play is called Parcheesi.

Suguroko and Sukogoroku were such a strange addition to the Kaioshin realm. They must be inspired by the Fake Namek Arc. Perhaps they were cut from the initial Dragon Balls hunt in space?
While I definitely prefer Kaioshin’s regular design, the screenshots of him from these episodes make me nostalgic for the fused design.

For 25 years, I though there was a pun or some japanese cultural joke about grinding coffee = ass itch I was missing, and since you announced you were covering GT, I was really looking forward for your explanation for the joke...and you are telling me there is no joke, and how random the whole "grinding coffee = ass itch" thing is, that IS the joke?

You know, it's been awhile since I watched GT, but if memory serves, the two tanookis not only stand in the background this whole arc, but next time we get a peak at the kai's pad, they're just not even there anymore. They straight up disappear. Even Puar and Oolong stayed around in the background.
On a side note, are you sure the spirits who get angry at him for cheating are the victims, and not the people in charge of this dimension who set the rule about having to win a set number of times?

an entire story arc that took place in the afterlife was such a missed opportunity in DB.
The Super 17 arc (and Fusion Reborn to a lesser extent) was sort of that with Goku going to hell but an entire arc where the Z fighters fight demons would of been great.
