  • Dragon Ball Dissection December continues its look at the long series of fights against Majin Boo. After Gotenks fails, Gohan steps up to be the hero guy. However, he not only fails to live up to expectations but does so while being horribly bland. With Boo losing all of his fun characteristics, it's a bland sandwich!
All patrons can win a copy of Akira Toriyama's Manga Theater! Contest closes on December 31st. Just give me your best pitch of how Bardock will be ruined next as a comment on the link below:

To use a Wrestling scenario: Gohan enters the ring, swfitly puts Buu on the backfoot and just when you think He will achieve the boyhood dream... the Ref 'Toriyama' beans him with a steel chair. Buu swiftly gets a fast count and Gohan is done. All that build up all that Hype and Gohan is put down like a dog cause it wasn't BEST FOR BUSINESS

@@JackOfen Yes, and it's also not helped by the fact that Gohan achieved this power-up through a silly dance, not through training or internal development. This section of the story, between Gotenks, Gohan and Vegito really makes me wonder what the hell was Toriyama thinking when writing this stuff or what general direction did he think the story would have gone to, as vague as it could be. I know that it's rare for writers to know exactly where or how the story will end, and ESPECIALLY Toriyama is the kind of writer to do the exact opposite, but I can't wrap my head around the fact that he wrote 3 consecutive powerups as just "fake-outs" despite their relatively careful built-up over multiple chapters; and if he did really consider one of those to be Buu's finisher, then why play out the situation in such a dull way to unsubtly inform the audience "don't worry guys, this isn't how it's gonna end".

I always thought it was his way of raising the stakes and showing how much more amazing Buu is compared to previous villains. No matter the heroes throw at him he survives it until it takes literally the power of every character from the series to beat him. I still think the Spirit Bomb ist the best ending that was possible and everything bedore that was to build up Buu as a villain. That's what I like about the Buu Saga the most, it focuses a lot on the villain.
And since I never really cared about Gohan, I honestly never had problems with this part of the Saga (coming from the original DB, Gohan always just seemed like a marketing tool. since all characters had grown up at the start of the Z era, Gohan was added so younger viewers had someone to attach to. And seeing how many Gohan fans started with Z and not the original when they were younger it worked quite well.)

My issue with Buu Gohan is that they build him up through the entire arc, saying that he is the new protagonist and even getting a new power up....only for him to not amount to anything. Like if he wants to be a scholar and not fight sure, I can accept that part of Gohan, it just feels like it would have been more powerful and overall better if he had beaten Buu and earned his peaceful life completely imo.

It's quite annoying to see so many fans of dragonball absolutely refuse to believe he can do any wrong what so ever. From a writing stand point he just has way too many characters to juggle. I get it. Let's not forget that Toriyama took Yamcha's goal "to find true love" and gave it to Krillin all while taking Bulma away from him to poop out another saiyan. Its blatant character assassination. But at the same time he did throw him a bone as well, giving him some moments like being good at professoinal baseball as a career in alternative to fighting, training with king kai, throwing recoome out of the ring, even beating olibu who was told to us the viewer he's as strong as cell. It's weird to me how much that angle is pushed, and how much the fandom believes it's what Dragon Ball *is*, to the point where Goku and Vegeta are seen as some kind of ironic duo that shape the series, one not being able to exist without the other... and in the actual manga this dynamic makes up what, like 3% of the total series? But that 3% has really been expanded to try and encompass everything nowadays.

@@Thisdude850 It's kinda funny how Vegeta contrasts the previous rivals Goku challenges and proves to be superior to: the others, after battling, finally recognize Goku as their superior and keep fighting for the good of the Earth and to surpass their own limits, even at the cost of the stakes outgrowing them, whereas Vegeta manages to stay relevant and keeps getting stronger because of his unealthy obsession to "surpass Kakaroth" which pushed him to commit atrocities and act like a dunce even when on the side of the "good guys".
In GT, after permanently viewing Kakaroth as his superior, he accepts being behind him, and as a consequence, irrelevant to the story up until the final arc (evne if he doesn't like being viewed as such), but in Super, he sort of manages to compete with Goku because, again, he's so damn obsessed with surpassing Goku (but fortunately he isn't an evil murderer anymore). It actually makes me feel sad for the Gohan. Gohan had a ton of development in the span of 4 massive story arcs only to be made a fool out of and replaced. What a waste of a character.
Also bringing in Tenshinhan just so he can get clowned by Buu in an even worse fashion than in the Cell Arc genuinely pissed me off because in the earlier volumes of the Dragon Ball series, Tenshinhan was a martial arts master who had a whole arsenal of techniques, a character who genuinely scared and later impressed Master Roshi and Goku, and now here he is being made into a punching bag for Buu.

Much as I enjoy the Buu arc overall, it is definitely the worst in terms of writing. You constantly get the feeling like Toriyama kept changing his mind throughout the whole thing and had even less of a plan for the story than usually. Nothing has time to breathe. Things are set up and then discarded. Characters are propped up as the heroes only to be replaced. Plots are started and then replaced. Arbitrary rules are introduce and then ignored or contradicted.
Gohan is attending high school and has to keep his powers a secret from Satan's daughter!
No wait! It's a tournament arc now!
No wait! They have to advance through Babidi's spaceship!
No wait! It's the fated rematch between Goku and Vegeta!
No wait! Maybe they can defeat a villain by teaching him that killing people isn't supposed to be fun!
No wait! It's about the younger generation becoming the new protectors of Earth and Fusion being the new amazing technique that will help defeat Buu!
No wait! It's about Gohan stepping up to the plate!
    No wait! Tenshinhan is here!
    No wait! Now he's not!
No wait! It's about Goku and Vegeta putting aside their differences and fusing!
No wait! It's just Vegeta getting the crap beaten out of him while Goku saves the day!
The entire arc is constantly moving to the next thing at a rapid pace. And as I said, nothing has time to breathe. We barely get any decent interaction between Videl and the rest of the Z group and she's just another face in the background almost the second the Buu/Babidi portion starts. Piccolo and Goku aren't given a moment to grieve Gohan's supposed death. Mr. Satan is barely an actual character in the arc until the final moments of the arc with the Spirit Bomb and saving Vegeta. Gotenks doesn't learn from his cockiness that lead to the death of all of their family and friends. Hell, the entire Buu arc seems to happen within ONE DAY as at no point does the sun set nor does it ever become night time.

You'd think that'd scar him for life with a lesson, but no. It's literally the exact same thing again. Only it makes him look like a total idiot. Also, you'd think he'd feel great shame over the Cell thing, especially with Chi-Chi, but no, it's not a story element for some reason.

This was more Gotenks' fault than Gohan's. I think the reason people blame Gohan more than they should is because the anime handled the lead up to the absorption differently. In the manga, the way it plays out creates the impression that Gotenks' appearance and subsequent absorption happened way to fast for Gohan to react to; while in the anime, Trunks and Goten take the field and Gohan actively lets them fuse and fight.

10:36- also similar to Gohan, once Super Buu absorbs Gotenks/Piccolo and later Gohan himself, he loses what made him unique- a sinister, but silly oaf that has a dangerously unpredictable temper. From here on, he becomes discount Cell- an arrogant perfectionist that relies on absorbing others to become the strongest while becoming more humanoid. Except it’s lacking the charisma and nuance that the original Cell had, leaving only an insufferable twat that doesn’t fight/act any different from previous main villains before him. And it’s really noticeable in Moro in Super when he does the same thing if Super Buu didn’t hint this.
Buu doesn’t become interesting again until he’s literally lobotomized and he’s reduced to an unpredictable and mindless killing machine.

I think one of the most damning thing about Gohan is that...he doesn't really have anything cool in terms of fight choreography. As a kid he was...well the only kid. That coupled with the huge surges of power when he's mad was basically his trademark. now that he's more mature and has his anger under control he's just...a strong guy.
Goku is very inventive and creative and while he doesn't have a huge library of techniques like other characters the way he uses the techniques he knows is always engaging (ie. Firing a kamehameha to propel himself, firing a kamehameha with his feet, remotely controlling ki blasts under water so he can hit Frieza with a feint, or combining kamehameha with his new instant transmission.) Goku manageds to take the same old attacks and still make them feel fresh.
Vegeta by contrast is there for all the boys who just wanna see somebody wreck shit. He's aggressive and skilled, to the point where his most iconic moves are A giant ball of ki. A giant beam, and just throwing as much ki at the opponent until they die. He makes a pretty decent contrast to Goku in that regard in that he's a lot more straightforward (I'll admit this characterization is more to do with late Frieza saga onward cuz early on he also had quite a few interesting techniques that kept you guessing)
Then there's characters like Tenshinhan, Gotenks and Piccolo who just do a lotta weird stuff. Rather than every attack being a bigger beam most of their fights revolve around trying to doing really cool stuff that, admittedly, usually end with them just firing a big beam at someone, but it makes their fights a lot more engaging to watch.
Then there's current Gohan. Who does none of those. Yes current Gohan is the most basic out of all the characters I mentioned. No interesting techniques like Tenshinhan and the like, no pure aggression like Vegeta, and not as inventive or creative as Goku has been. He's just sorta...there. Doing the fight. Like he's strong I guess? I guess he's kinda cool. But he's absolutely not engaging. There's nothing to how he fights here that makes you say "ah this is Gohan. This is how Gohan should fight"

    • @agerard6297
      @agerard6297 2 роки тому

To be sure, current Gohan got intelligent. Whereas his earlier fights were just hit and power, in the US Arc, he decided to put his brain into it. Using his SSJ to radar Lavendar's position in the Expo fight, using his punches to levitate Botamo off the ring, realizing he had to have Obuni hit him in order to get him physically, having the brain to play along with Freeza in his trick against Frost, having Freeza use a laser cage to limit Dyspo's movements. If you noticed, aside from Bergomo, Goku in this Arc relied on power-ups and force to remove his opponents.

@@agerard6297 I think Gohan being a "smart" fighter would work better if the writers themselves were smarter. Insomuch that there's not anything you said that I couldn't picture Goku not figuring out in the manga. Or not quite as pragmatic as say, Frieza saga era Vegeta.
Then again I just don't think Super is all that well written in general.

When I first watched the episode of Gohan fighting Majin Boo, I kept dozing off during it. It was THAT boring. Gotenks at least has creative techniques and a funny personality, but Gohan is just a blunt instrument used to bludgeon Boo for a while, then he's ultimately outsmarted by a guy he called a "retard." How pathetic.
Really, Gohan never had a chance at successfully being the main character because he never came into his own as a character. He's always been the "child prodigy" character as well as a tool used by someone else whether it be Piccolo or Goku. Gohan's fight with Cell is really the most sabotaging thing to his character because he obviously wasn't ready to have the torch passed onto him as evidenced by him constantly needing pep talks to get the job done, 2 from his father and one by some robot he doesn't know. The Cell Arc wasn't about Gohan at all and did nothing to further his character development before that point. And even though he does defeat Cell, it's more like Goku defeated Cell using Gohan as a proxy, so Gohan didn't earn the win and is still nothing but a tool to be used. Gohan never gets his own agency in the story and is too passive to be the protagonist. He never gets to be himself, only what others want him to be.
The Great Saiyaman is cool, however, it's abandoned before it gets a chance to get off the ground. Who knows how it would have ultimately played out if Toriyama stuck with it, but it's probably wouldn't have worked out after all because of Toriyama not giving Gohan his own agency before passive the torch onto him. Another thing, Gohan allegedly wants to be a scholar, but what that actually means as far as the story is concerned is never elaborated on, so it's never becomes more than a thing that gets said and ultimately comes across more as something Chichi wants for him than what he wants, which adds to how he's just used by others. Since this arc started in a high school setting, it was a prime opportunity to add substance to Gohan becoming a scholar as we could learn what area of study he's even interested in. What brings him joy? What motivates him? What does he want out of it? How can he apply that within the series itself? None of that happens, none of those questions are answered, and he's ultimately stuck having to be something other than himself, thus stripping him of any charm or personality.

While I get that Gohan's showing is a serious disappointment here, a few rereads made me conclude that, contrary to a popular critical opinion (which I presume you'll touch on next week?), Gohan *didn't* screw this up. I get why he'd come off as a cardboard character. When it comes to Buu's plan, though-that's *all* Gotenks' fault. He blabbed about his weakness to Buu and failed to finish him off because of how much he goofed around. While Gohan was fighting, he actually had his guard up the whole time, reacted pretty quickly to his surprises, and anticipated the course of the battle. When Buu returned, Gohan was ready to finish the job. That's when Gotenks came in and fell hook, like, and sinker for the bait, and even Piccolo's super-hearing apparently couldn't pick up on the frequency of Buu's goo...?
I'd argue that Gohan ultimately losing this bout is what results in some concluding he regressed to his Super Saiyan 2 self by being overconfident. In actuality, his confidence was perfectly reasonable and wasn't what led to his failure. When Goku returns, though...that's when he's truly, *embarrassingly* sloppy, and I can't fault anyone for laughing off his showing there.

As much I love tenshinhan as a character, I have one question in this part of Buu arc in particular....Why bother? Like why bother bringing him back just so he can get clowned by buu? It's like the writers need a character to even help gohan in the first place, besides in GT, He only got like a good 10/15 second screentime...This is the first of many examples how toriyama treat the OG cast after saiyan saga, They only just be irrelevant for one part only just to get there ass kick to filled in the scene more. It's just sad really How Once were fucking badass duo for me (Yamcha and tenshinhan I mean by that) become absolute jokes after Cell, They only just appear for a single plot purpose and that's all, sure you all could argue Super's filler episodes and the later mangas kinda give them abit more care but really..the damage has been done, It's like how the whole purpose of SSJGB being calm got drop off literally after it's established

I know that when buu absorbs people he tends to gain a bit of their personality and in that becomes a bland villian, but wouldn't it be more amazing if, the more he absorbs the more primal he gets. Acting more and more like a child?
One thing I never got was that fat buu is playful because he absorbed the grand kai, but then super buu absorbed him; so shouldn't he be more playful since he now has his personality inside him?
More so, the more people you have inside you, the more personalities mix and by that point your personality would end up being the most consistant shared between them; the primal parts, since buu here has piccolo and gotenks inside him; so he would act more like a smug arrogant, playful child (like kid buu). Unless personalities don't mix and only gain the best aspects from them (which is what is shown here), which would beg the question, what is fat buu's best aspects? If anything he'd become kid buu the moment he absorbs him.
Maybe it's just me, but the absorbing personality thing and the pacing would be far better and fun; if buu became more and more child-like, which can lead to the kid buu form with a nice flow. Gohan has always fought smug, evil villians. I don't think (at this point) he ever fought a literal child with a man's body. It would be funny and exciting.

Mistare Fusion, you probably won't see this, but I wonder how the story might've unfolded if Goku really did fuse with Hercule before Vegeta showed up since you pointed out how narratively strong and rich the Hercule and Buu dynamic is.
-Well we know that Gokule is basically Hercule, but with all of the power and understanding of Goku. So the fake world saviour and the real world saviour become one and Hercule gets the chance to personally save not only the world but also his dear Daughter and his precious friend Fat Buu.
-It just fits surprisingly well the more I think about it like the whole thing goes full circle. The Buu saga started with Gohan and Videl, but both of their Fathers' shadows loomed over them, and by the end, they both literally come together to save them.
-The fighting style would be pretty unique considering how underhanded Hercule is compared to the humble Goku, but we got some supplemental material to bridge that gap. But imagine SSJ Gokule going full-on Hulk Hogan on Super Buu.
-Vegeta probably would've still arrived, but more as backup and a straight man.
-In fact, once the other fighters get back on their feet from inside Buu, Hercule's treatment could change from an annoying hindrance, but as a member of the team after fighting side by side with some of the Z-Warriors and rescuing them.
    - (Just thought of a scene where Hercule from the Gokule experience and has now come to respect Gohan due to Goku's memories and influence, convinces Gohan to change into the Great Saiyaman clothes as a superhero should and the Great Saiyaman gets some credit with Hercule in the public eye. This is just Gohan no longer mimicking others, but fighting as himself)
-We could even see Hercule re-evaluate the ways he views Martial Arts and restore the Budokai Tournament to its roots and former glory, but now better than ever.
-Heck, imagine Tien acts like Hercule's bodyguard for the rest of the Kid Buu fight since he can't really help much any other way and afterward, they form a partnership with that goal of restoring the world martial arts spirit in mind by Tien making Hercule's dojos more authentic
-One person making a difference in the world is the message the Buu Saga then sends, loud and clear.
