    Regarding the ending of PGSM, I have two thoughts:
    1. I've seen some people say that when the Silver Crystal fixed the world, it also rewound time to just before the series started, just without Usagi. It would explain why Minako is recording C'est la Vie despite having released her goodbye album two episodes ago. And in this version of the world, not only is Usagi not around, but the others never became Senshi - so theoretically, since Minako never became Sailor V and remembered the Past Life, she never felt the need to put anything above her health, and thus she either didn't work herself to death that she needed surgery, or she did have a terminal illness all along, but she found the time to do something about it rather than focus on a mission. Of course, since C'est la Vie was clearly meant to be a pun on Sailor V, one can't help but wonder what her inspiration was in this timeline, so there's a new plot hole lol. But I digress, this is one thought.
    2. Something else to consider is that I think the creators of PGSM did want to cover at least one other Sailor Moon arc after Dark Kingdom, but since reception hadn't been doing well enough, they ended the show on the Dark Kingdom arc (in fact, they apparently had more episodes they wanted to make, but they ended up not doing them). So bringing Minako back to life probably had less to do with wanting to end the series with all five girls together and more to do with not really having much of a choice since they couldn't continue on to another arc, and I suppose they thought "Better to bring her back than leave her dead for good since we're not continuing this show after this". Plus, maybe if they continued for another arc, maybe Minako would've come back later in some other way. Usagi definitely wanted her to live, so that might be another reason why Minako came back.

    I don't have a problem with the ending because the powers of the Silver Crystal have always been very vague and too powerful. I didn't belive for even half a second Minako was going to be dead forever. I do wish her spirit had been more present. Maybe calling out for Usagi and only Rei being able to hear her would have worked. I will agree that it's super unrealistic and just made so everyone can be happy. But I think it's earned but Sailor Moon has always had that bittersweetness that the ending is missing, like all the girls being alive but not knowing each other.
    Anyway, I loved the analysis even if I disagree with a few points... but only a few and I admit it's probably nostalgia blinding me a bit too much

    The Silver Crystal has always been able to bring people back from the dead and always does at the end of the Dark Kingdom arc. Her not bringing back Minako would have ruined the ending imo. She gets to be a happy girl like Usagi always imagined her favourite idol to be and like Minako really was under all of her trauma. She is the beautiful soldier of love after all. Usagi made a miracle happen and it elated me when she came back.

    Having a major story point practically forgotten about by the next episode reminds me of two things:
    1) the scene in Godzilla 2014, where G is first revealed and about to fight the MUTO, only for it to suddenly cut to the next day, and
    2) one of the season finales of As Told by Ginger, where the titular heroine finds out that her friends are plotting against her and her bf, only for the next episode to act like it never happened and it's only brought up several episodes later in a throwaway line.

    While I get the feelings over Minako's revival (which I can agree to a point!), I always felt it was fitting because of how the ending is structured. The way Usagi and Mamoru restored the world made it seem to me that they essentially erased themselves from time, meaning that no one ever became a Senshi, and without a duty to pour herself into, Minako got the surgery shortly after her diagnosis instead of letting it stew for a year, wanting to live. Narratively, it makes sense! But it does spit on the face of the previous buildup, and logical explanations for the narrative doesn't exclude the emotional feelings lol

      That's certainly an interesting interpretation, one I've seen suggested at least once before. Had the series given that idea any weight, I might feel totally differently. If I may ask, though, how do you reconcile that with Special Act, which pretty unequivocally confirms that all of those events still did happen?

    • @DropsOfMoonlight13
      @DropsOfMoonlight13 26 днів тому +6

      @@MistareFusion Special Act does make so many things difficult, doesn't it lol? The way I've always seen it is that while everyone just remembers Usagi at the end of Final Act, the next four years is spent with everyone else regaining the memories of that one year (or those 2 years in Minako's case), so as far as they're concerned it DID happen even if it didn't, really. Memories are stronger than facts and all. As for Mio I just headcanoned that because she was killed by Metallia's power she got to do some Weird Shit to continue existing in the new timeline, what with its power being equal to the Crystal and all.
      I do have nothing for Luna still being a Senshi though I'll give that to you, that one doesn't make much sense with my interpretation but to be fair, that's sort of Sailor Luna's tagline much as I love her. It's an interpretation that demands more elbow grease from the watcher than normal so I can't blame anyone else for feeling differently one way or the other

      @@MistareFusion Wait, does the Special Act mention that everything from the main show still happened in the 'new' world? If it's part of your video on the Special Act, though, I can wait for that of course.

    • @MistareFusion
      @MistareFusion 26 днів тому +5

      I can't really point to an exact specific moment where they literally say it all did happen, but there are enough moments that heavily suggest to the point that even using the word "suggest" seems like I'm understating it. Mio comes back to life, which couldn't happen if she hadn't died in the first place. Mio addresses the citizenry by asking if they remember her time as a pop idol, so all of that happened. Mamoru is frequently reminding Usagi she's not Sailor Moon anymore, which implies that she was at some point. Usagi comments on Mamoru losing the Shitennou again. Even things like Luna living openly in Ikuko's house seems to imply that everything that happened not only happened but is common knowledge. The entire ending is a montage of Usagi remembering their adventures from the show. I mean, I guess if you believe in the time travel theory, you could assume she just remembers it, not that it actually happened, but I don't know.
      While I find the traveling back in time theory interesting, I don't personally subscribe to it. It's really only the recording of C'est La Vie that even hints at something like that, which is certainly not nothing. But there's far more to suggest that the end of Final Act picks up where the rest of the series left off. Ami and Naru are friendly with each other. Rei has her straight bangs hairstyle from later in the series (Act ZERO, for example, would return Rei to the side swept hair she wore in early episodes in order to place it before the beginning of the series). And as you pointed out in your other comment, Makoto is living in Azabu-Juban. I'd be more inclined to believe C'est La Vie was sacrificing strict logic for familiarity. Especially with the existence of Special Act, it requires a lot more effort to assume that the events of the series were wiped out of its own continuity. Again, I think that would have been a fun way to take it. I think it's a good theory, and given how vague and quick the ending is, I can see fans coming up with any number of ways to explain what the heck happened. I just see little evidence of it within the text.

    Maybe they should have pulled a Dumbledore and had Minako meet Mamoru and Usagi in the void saying something vaguely spiritual while Makoto, Ami, and Rei are calling Usagi's name. "Go to them, they're calling you". That way you have your Minako moment on the final show but don't undo all the progress they made throughout the storyline. Shoot, you could even have jedi-ghost Minako walking along side the crew on the final shot if you wanted to go extra fanservicey. Also, should the show be picked up for another series, you have that possibility of Minako returning because you saw her in the void. I'm not saying Sailor Moon should steal the Enterprise for her Search for Spock moment, but I am saying that Minako isn't the focus for the final show and that plot could be told later if need be.

    Never thought about it like this. Probably because I never thought it was gonna stick a permanent death for Minako. Or that in all the changes of plot, so unlike Rise of Skywalker or Last Jedi, to me, it's very much in character and sense. The theme PGSM was going towards in it's ending is everyone both unable to escape fate but reaching a understanding that their choices now mentally pushed them forward. And sure Usagi ignoring Mio is odd, but Usagi's enemy stopped being Mio and Beryl. It was her own fears and insecurities now. Hi past life sheltered and lovesick princess who has gone badass as result. Usagi was battling her past love and current. Current including the world while the past didn't. Past and Mio representing and worry and jealousy and fear of repeat bogging her and Mamoru down. So then I love that her and Mamoru try their best to change the outcome, and still fail. But there is still love. There is love between them that gives a shot to undo as Serenity and Endymion, cause when they get just the two, they've grown up and put the world first, and are willing to die for it this time over their love. And I love that as they choose to fix the world, of course Serenity/Usagi/ heart crystal would save Minako, resurrect the guys as Mamoru's guys (Usagi wasn't paying attention to new Nephie), and say bye Mio as the figment of Beryl she was.
    It fit for me. The past issues had to be. PGSM was brave to have failure then growth. To really go hard and not say we can fix or change from our pasts, but to be blunter and say both have their day. The past created and destroyed. The lessons created and revived.

    Like other people in the comments, I assumed that Minako had just ended up getting the surgery. Like she created an alternate, senshi-less timeline or universe.
    It sucks that Nephrite never came back, but he was always weird, in that he said him becoming human was a punishment from Beryl, if I remember correctly. As soon as he said that, my thought was "Oh, so this probably isn't permanent. She'll probably take him back at some point." So when he didn't come back, I immediately assumed it was because of that. Like the human form wasn't completely real. Thinking on it now, you could also say that if this is another timeline, Beryl wouldn't have resurrected the Shintennou in the first place.
    No idea about Luna. That's the one thing I always questioned, and goes against "new timeline theory".

    It’s funny about the cheap resurrection thing, considering that Dragon Ball is known for that. However, that mainly applies in Super.
    In Toriyama‘s Dragon Ball as well in GT, the cast had to fight their hardest in order to earn or safely use the Dragon Balls. There were still stakes, and the Dragon Balls can only fix the situation once the threat is taken care of.

      @@ijmbvck That‘s not the point. Each time they did it in the original, the stakes were still high and it was still earned.
      In the Piccolo Daimaoh arc, the Dragon Balls were used and destroyed by the villain. Gokū almost died in the battle, and after asking God to restore the Dragon Balls, Kuririn was finally resurrected.
      In the Saiyan arc, the DB used early to resurrect Gokū for the upcoming fight, but a day too late, which is why the battle was also about defending the Dragon Balls. They failed, which is why they needed to go to Namek in order to revive their friends.
      On Namek, they went through hell to finally get access to the Earth Dragon Balls, and the Dragon Balls were used strategically.
      They lost the Dragon Balls again in the Cell arc, but they restored them with upgrades, but still didn’t fix the same-wish rule, which is why Gokū wasn’t resurrected (who also chooses to stay dead).
      In the Boo arc, as long as Boo was around, the Earth Dragon Balls can only be safely used again after he’s dealt with, otherwise they’re wasting resurrections. Vegeta managed to redeem himself during that crisis, hence his earned second resurrection.

    As for the video proper, I think i had more or less the same thoughts but not the same feelings when I first watched the finale. Mostly because considering there wasn't going to be more (I found out about the extra Acts way later) I did kinda want that cheesy ending where everyone comes back just because. That is part of the franchise's DNA as much as DB's powers up have become theirs. Its very annoying we dont have a full Behind the Scene play by play because I do often wonder if they were cancelled sooner than they thought, I remember reading that this was the case but saw nothing official, so maybe there was a bigger plan to do more with the story and plot beats and all those characters but they ran out of time and lost the ending. The Special Act certainly felt very much like a tying lose ends thing, but is hard to really know what happened. Maybe that's why I gave it a pass. if they had gone on for longer I do wonder if they would've found a way to either keep the deaths or revive people as a tie in to the next arc. Like time travel with a real Chibi Usa or introduce the outers sooner and have the Holy Chalice play into it.
    I do long for a version of the story that expands on the more interesting elements of all versions (Really was hoping Crystal would be this but it was fine for what it was). But I still think this is leagues better than any other version of sailor moon I have consumed.

    Hello and thank you for another wonderful PGSM video! You continue to deliver. And I'm happy to know you'll be delving into the additional material, too!
    I chuckled knowingly when Mio came on screen. Yeah, she's a bit iffy. As for why she suddenly stops harassing Usagi, I always assumed it's because Minako basically went, "It's nice that Usagi forgave you. But I'm not her. You mess with her again, I'll fuck you up." But nevertheless, I agree Mio falls off after this.
    I was less disappointed by the ending than you were, although having only Ami, Rei and Makoto alive definitely would've been better. When it comes down to it, this ending flies in the face of the narrative consequence that PGSM tends to be so good at. And yes, this especially hits Minako hard. Usagi coming back through the power of friendship? Sure, I can buy that. But Minako isn't part of the friend group--that's the tragedy of her character! She was ripped away just when she was starting to become one of them.
    And that's before I even wonder how this whole remaking the world thing works! Minako and Mamoru were already dead before the world was destroyed, so why were they even able to be revived? Minako doesn't have a secret special painting somewhere, does she...?
    I feel all of this could've been improved by an epilogue that delved into the ramifications of this ending. How were Minako and Mamoru revived? Where are they now on the timeline? Minako sings C'est La Vie, but Makoto has already moved to Azabu-Juban, so that's inconclusive. How much does everyone remember? Do Naru and Motoki remember? And so on and so forth.
    Of course, they HAD this exact opportunity in the Special Act, but wasted that screentime on fun and indulgence. Which I honestly don't mind--I adore seeing Ami run down clowns in a taxi, Makoto punching stuff, etc. But the Special Act could've answered these questions and given us some closure, yet it dodged the subject as much as possible.
    Funnily enough, while most people want a sequel because they want to see how PGSM would tackle later arcs, I'm just here going, 'damn, I wish PGSM had a sequel where everyone DID have to meet again'. Especially considering they seemed to have retained their character growth before they remembered Usagi. But that wouldn't be a tokusatsu show, so...

    It's been about ten years since I watched this show on DVD (a friend of mine got a Region 1 DVD import from Japan years ago and gave it to me about thirteen or fourteen years ago), but I do remember this ending, and honestly, it did what Arrow ended up doing in its finale, where (SPOILERS!!!) Oliver's death during Crisis on Infinite Earths restored the Multiverse, including every main character who died during the show's first six seasons, including Tommy Merlyn, the most important death on the show outside of Robert Queen in the flashbacks in the pilot episode. Tommy's death in the season 1 finale started Oliver's road to becoming more than just a vigilante who murders the bad guys, simply because he feels they deserve it. While this is on a much smaller scale, giving that PGSM was only one season, I feel it's more similar to Arrow than the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy.

    Minako's resurrection was as pointless as Chaozu's second resurrection. Maybe they should have said she got the life-saving surgery the second time; at least that would make sense.

    Tbh i don't mind the way the series ended, but i might agree with by trying to keep a happy ending with all the girls together, it does let a few things untied despite other good things that narratively accomplished. But i can accept it since the Silver Crystal follows Usagi's heart, thoughts and emotions, of course she would have wished to bring Minako back and well lmao.
    While i've been re reading the sailor moon manga i saw some of Naoko's notes where for the first arc she had the idea to kill one of the main girls before the end, and then kill off the rest, but Osabu, her Editor, didn't let her, then she kinda rants that all the girls were killed in the anime, though they were brought back. Pgsm kinda does make Naoko's inicial ideas come to life, but of course Toei might have pressured to still keep the story with a "good end"

    This whole ending reminds me of Kamen Rider Ryuki (Just two years earlier amusingly enough) but whereas that one was at least a condemnation of how utterly worthless all these nonstop battles were, this one feels like the show trying to somehow give the happiest possible ending no matter what logic may dictate.
    Also with all due respect it looks worse and I don't even mean that from a VFX perspective, I mean just pure cinematography.

    • @matt0044
      @matt0044 26 днів тому

      Yeah, Ryuki’s ending on TV was actually bittersweet yet more on the happy side with Shiro Kanzaki relenting after multiple time loops. It was the predecessor to Madoka coincidentally enough.

    • @Novrrider-mx6cs
      @Novrrider-mx6cs 25 днів тому

      What makes it even funnier is the fact that this show has the same waiter as Ryuki so she literally copied herself. This is honestly the reverse of madoka magica to Kamen Rider Gaim where the Kamen Rider show is the copy with the ending but that show was able to get away with a permanent character death sure he was brought back in the movie but that tends to happen. Not saying the ending quality is the same as madoka just saying it's very similar and is the the only other instance I can think of of a magical girl show and a Kamen Rider show having similar endings written by the same person. This is just what I find funny.

    I'm a huge Sailor Venus fan. I did not like how they killed her off, it was very heartbreaking. Sailor Venus fans did not deserve that and neither did Sailor Mars. She’s a super hero, there were so many ways they could killed her off instead of making her the first and probably the only super hero that died of natural cause before the age 20. And to only resurrect her at the last minute.

      Thanks for sharing that with me and for watching the video. Given your opinions on Venus's death, I'd be interested to know what you think of my previous video in this series, Solving the Sailor Venus Problem. I'm not sure if you'd end up agreeing with me, but it might help explain where I'm coming from. ua-cam.com/video/zUe6sEpNfUI/v-deo.html

      Yes I did watch it. I actually cheered and booed on and off, cause I agree and disagree in certain areas. Whether I agreed and disagreed with you my reaction was because I enjoy your discussion. My thought on Sailor Mars and Venus’ relationship came off to me as more of a potential love story between them, I lost my focus on Mamorou and Usagi and was more interested in Minako and Rei being a potential power couple.

    Huh, you know something? Why doesn't the Silver Crystal bring Mio back, and just makes her Not Evil? If it could bring Venus back and suck the cancer (or whatever) out of her to give her a happy ending, why didn't Usagi bring Mio back but just as a regular girl?
    I guess the writers just really got tired of the character they invented and didn't really care enough to acknowledge her in the finale lol. Unless she WAS included somewhere in there and you just didn't mention it.

  • @alfredo1valenzuela
    @alfredo1valenzuela 5 днів тому

    Just cut the last half of the last episode off, and there's your realistic ending. After Sailormoon destroys the world, everything is bullshit. Of course. But come on, man: we have a precedent. We all knew -and expected- everybody to come back to life after the last battle because of the anime. But I think you are missing the point, why nobody has ever mentioned this? The core message was transmitted perfectly: emotions are a power than can be managed properly and be good, or let be and be bad. That's what's important.

    • @MistareFusion
      @MistareFusion 5 днів тому

      I'm afraid you must be misunderstanding me. I'm not asking for a realistic ending. I'm not asking for a downer ending. I *want* a happy ending. I'm asking that, if a show emotionally invests me in a conflict, it resolves it in a way that carries enough weight to match that investment. If Sailor Venus comes back to life, and the narrative doesn't seem to care or even notice that it's happened, there's no weight there. It's just a thing that happens in the background, subsumed by all the other plot elements that have to be rushed to completion. There's nothing emotionally satisfying about a major story thread that's reversed with a shrug. We can expect things to happen and still be disappointed by how they happen.

    Being reminded of Star Wars literally triggered me, like seriously, so read my insane ramblings at your own discretion. Sorry for the mess. I should have just deleted the comment I wrote, but I want my opinion out there so I edited to be more presentable. In the past I would have just released it as is.
    -The Rise of Skywalker is still a fantastic movie though. I cried at the ending of it, and as much as I loved The Last Jedi it didn't make me cry, so sorry but just like with Dragon Ball GT you just have absolutely awful taste in that regard.-
    [I edited out this part of the coment because it was simply me having a breakdown with nothing constructive. The next part is a somewhat constructive part of my breakdown]
    I hate Star Wars. Why did I ever watch it. I almost hurt myself back in 2018 because of all the Last Jedi hate videos made me feel my opinions are invalid. They all told me they were invalid and that art opinions are objective. Why did I ever seak validation from complete strangers? I had no friends so I felt alone in the world.
    [The above section was changed to remove me overstating how depressed I was. It was much more unhinged]
    I don't want to be reminded of Star Wars ever again. The original trilogy isn't good anyway, and that's apparently the only one you're allowed to like.
    Disney's The Black Hole is a more interesting movie than all of original trilogy. I hate the original trilogy. I hate Star Wars.
    [Edited out]
    Being into Star Wars or Sonic is really bad for your mental health.
    [My personal life information edited out]
    I respect your opinion, but i don't agree with it, in the slightest. This is not the first time and it won't be the last, but unlike Dragon Ball, Star Wars is something I have an emotional connection, so I physically can't take disagreements well.
    This comment exists as my way to vent my episode. I probably shouldn't post it, but I will. 😅
    Sorry
    At least we agree Last Jedi is good.❤

    They should have gone with the Time Travel aspect and brought back Minako from the dead via altering her cancer history after realizing they couldn't save Sailor Moon without the power of Sailor Venus.
    At least get a Plot B storyline in order to save Plot A from a Bad Ending, I would have rather that.

      I want to say that's the explanation I heard once, that somehow the memories of Usagi went back and influenced Minako earlier in the year.
