Writes the lyrics, writes the riffs, sings whilst playing that crazy shit. James is Metallica.
He carried a lot of the band. Not saying the rest of them have no talent, but James did a lot of the work.
Just like mustaine with megadeth
@@noname-pk6ez mustaines vocals are nowhere near hetfields
@@Rj-hu2fi
Agreed. James is naturally gifted but Dave tries too hard.
@@UgherzCookies After Cliff died James stepped up and carried the band. Cliff had shit in order there. They partied but he was the big brother there to put shit in check. James had to be after he died.
I have never understood how James manages to sing WHILE playing some of these riffs. Being a musician myself I know how hard that can be. He just has a natural talent for that kind of stuff. Singing riff machine!
+Paul O'Rourke Zakk Wylie said a lot of his picking technique came from jacking off too...
Have we found the secret to being great guitar players? I GOT IT! WE NEED TO JACK OFF MORE!!!
+Paul O'Rourke Zakk Wylie said a lot of his picking technique came from jacking off too...
Have we found the secret to being great guitar players? I GOT IT! WE NEED TO JACK OFF MORE!!!
Torjus he plays and sing since he was 16 in scenario so i call that experience
Torjus it is very very difficult when you're playing a complex riff and sing at the same time... That's why James is the king of heavy riffs.
Dave mustaine sings and does that hard riff at the same time. The riff of Tornado of souls... That's insane!
Brian setzer plays some complex tricky stuff while singing as well!
It's all practice and also natural talent.
GloriousTapeworm go ahead. Play through That Was Just Your Life, and sing it, record and upload. We’ll wait.
Hetfield the riff factory!
oh Yeah !!! \m/
+MetallicaLiveHD Used to be yes, I am a huge fan of his but if he writes Metal riff now days it doesn't really have the power ,aggression and that attack that it used to have, he writes totally different style of riffs now, not really my taste but it's Metallica's way of playing '' metal '' now and if you dig it, good for you ;)
and That guy behind the mixing table ,Greg Fidelman, got to go!!! he doesn't know anything about heavy music or how it is suppose to sound like, I was hugely disappointed that they chose him again to produce and mix their next album, instead of challenging and pushing themselves and bringing in some one new.
Ha-ha :D
that's funny I was thinking that when I was watching this..the riff master of em all
he does all of the slayer stuff so he knows about metal
my problem is the tone..it doesnt sound as hard/tough. they have to tune down to help his voice
1:06 Notice how perfectly in time he is. Fricken rhythm guitar monster.
Someone's gotta keep time lol
He is like a human metronome.
I don't remember who it was... Maybe Bob Rock? Who said Hetfield could lay down to tracks and they would be virtually indistinguishable as if you just copied the track and overlayed it.
12 year old Japanese kids are writing better riffs
@@endtimes814yes but those japanese kids are not metallica lol
I pale at the thought of riffs that make Hetfield's machine gun right arm hurt
Maybe playing Disposable Hereos at 200% might catch the pick on fire.
I so pale
We lived in Hetfield's era. Be proud of it.
"You playing octaves or something?" I died.
5:01
James is such a beast
Beauty and the jaymz
8:50 - one of the most badass licks of all time
what song is he playing?
@@Tony-dg1hm unfortunately it was never a real riff but become the riff in "all Nightmare long"
5:04
"Are you just playing octaves or something?"
"I'm playing that chord!"
Kirk always seems like such a little kid.
I'm Always between : " this is cute for a rock star" and " get yourself some freakin arpegios lessons" xD i mean it's not a garage band it's damned Metallica
@@TheMangaka74 Kirk to me always seemed like the kid of the band. Especially their Master of Puppets interview in 1986. Kirk was so shy and talked about how he buys comics and toys on the road.
He is one of the best rhythm players I've ever heard his hooks are vicious !
Fucking love the That Was Just Your Life riff. Sounds like something off Kill Em All.
Sabin Mihalcea Now that its pointed out they're way to similar
James Hetfield
lol a bit but who cares
Always good to rework classics... Just keep the classic version too. This was kinda supposed to be a return to the roots, and apparently it sounds like it.
+Sabin Mihalcea What ? How does that sound like Jump in the fire ? Dude have you got ears ?
It's because it's the same notes at a different pitch it's a minor scale.
James- “are you playing octaves or something?”
Kirk - “I’m playing that chord” *BUMMMM*
Lars definitely gets off by playing the drums.... i mean look at those faces
+Jordan Casual Gameing Scott You play drums with the faces?
+Alex Cosmin you failed
+Alex Cosmin How can you play and feel music without pulling a face? ... Come on brother ...where's the emotion?!
+Thomas Ashworth lmao
Easy. Just look at Aquiles Priester. I guarantee you that he feels it.
Death Magnetic is an excellent piece of work and marked their return to some awesome Master type riffs. I can't understand why it didn't receive more recognition.
I agree. It just suffers from pretty bad production. It sounds like someone turned the bass all the way down (not the instrument) and the treble all the way up. It sounds so damn clangy for lack of a better word. And James' vocals sound quite loud. Its a step up from st anger production wise, but I just don't understand why they didn't take time to get a nice sound to it.
@@excuse.me.sir. DM does have comparatively little energy in the low-end and A LOT of high mids. And those especially don't gel well with the main issue of the record's production, namely that it was compressed to total shit and back, which means those high mids (and highs) are clipping all over the place and the whole record lacks any real punch and is really exhausting to listen to.
Probably the stupid name, hah. DeAtH MaGnEtIc. So edgy. ;)
@@Steve-tf1wv every metal album has a stupid title.
@Iceman Yes… it’s called hyperbole. Well done.
1:18 I feel like this is the most Hetfield-ian riff ever. It screams Metallica.
DonteKeys Haha, yep
Yes
What’s the song?
@@idjjosefsen5524 That Was Just Your Life
6:02 black album guitar sound !
8:02
Wish they did the guitar like that more often in The Day That Never Comes, sounds amazing.
Lars has a weird energy, like an hysterical person
That'll be the cocaine
@@johnwilliams8100 Wild to think he quit in 2008 cold turkey.
Cocaine my friend most likely
1:37 the great lars with his great fills
Lars as it most, was awesome... After the 90s seems phisically limited
He also speeds up afterwards lol
3:03 That riff sounds like something straight outta Pearl Jam's Ten.
+Keven Klayne It's Pearl Jam's "Why Go" Riff.
sounds like even flow
ThEiLLtechNICIAN Yeah it does but he's really playing the Why Go riff.
+Keven Klayne Its similar but its not at all the same riff
Destess You're right.
Hetfield = god .. really is .. his riffs , his technique , killer vocals and amazing lyrics .. Simply awesome
Plus he’s a super nice person!
Riff king
James might be a riff king but tony ioomi is a riff master
Dimebag Darrell: Riff wizard
Jimmy page: Riff God
Julius Mol in what universe does Jimmy Page beat Dimebag and Tony Iommi at riffs
Kirk Windstein - Riff Lord
Unpopular opinion: James deserves so much more than what he gets out of his band
he's the frontman/leader of the biggest metal band on earth, hes doing OK.
Haha what? Yeah poor James, he can surely do better that being the frontman of one of the biggest bands in history
6:15 He should have just kept goin
He plays rhythm like a lead guitar player combined with a drummer. Love James
The sound when he picks the strings without being plugged in is awesome. That hard percussive sound.
HETFIELD IS METALLICA!
Ulrich too!
TheDriver82 James could take Metallica and start a new band and no one would even remember who Lars was!!
Metallica is Metallica
@@jimb7816 nah, lars is a very important part of metallica, he is an amazing composer, him and James write almost everything together
TheDriver82 Lars is bad drummer
James the king of riffs
My favorite metal riff writer ever
Making music like this must be the best job ever. The end result is amazing.
00:15 drums expectation
01:54 reality
and lars makes a "i nailed that part" face
8:33 why didnt they make a song with that riff, sounds Brutal!!
they did search for Metallica - Flamingo
It turned into All Nightmare Long. The similarities are pretty clear.
All nightmare long
Because that's Rob's riff and no one ever listens to the bass player
Too mexican
fun fact: James wrote the solo in Orion
His solos (in the right order):
1. Master Of Puppets (bridge)
2. Orion (bridge)
3. To Live Is To Die (-||-)
4. Nothing Else Matters (all guitars by James)
5. Thorn Within
6. The Outlaw Torn (outro)
7. Carpe Diem, Baby
8. The Day That Never Comes (long bridge)
9. Suicide & Redemption (breakdown and bridge)
10. The Ecstacy of Gold (band version - all lead guitar parts by him)
Igor Tokarski you forgot solo from St Anger (I know it’s a stupid joke but anyway)
@@bloody-fire I see that you probably mean the little solo at the first minute of the beggining from SOME KIND OF MONSTER!!!!!!!!!! That makes sense
@@igortokarski9517 he wrote al solos from HTSD
@@igortokarski9517 Add Just a bullet away solo :)
No one in this planet play the rhythm guitar the way Hetfield does....he's a fucking monster! Speed, accuracy, power and melodic taste at maximum level. Very impressive.
There is one person, but I think I better not mention him near Metallica fans
Lemmy was better.
@@Fuck_handles well, he didn't exactly play rhythm guitar considering he didn't even play guitar
I’ll second the first comment - goes by the name Dave, sure you can figure out the last name.
No, Yousician. No.
Yep, everytime when I click some rock videos, that Yousician fucktard just pop up, made me wanna puch him in his douchey face
How clean he sounds while playing at such speed and downpicking is simply impressive
Watching this just made me fall in love with Death Magnetic again! :)
I remember they were playing Day that never comes every hour on the hour. I went to the Sam Ash where y buddy worked, he clocked out for his lunch break and we listened to it in the car. Great momeny
I'm over 40 and this was one of the bands that got my attention in the 80's.
No matter what anyone wants to say or think to be cool I still think Ride the lightning was one of the greatest albums ever recorded as well as Kill em' All and Master of puppets. You can talk shit to be cool if you want but Metallica helped metal grow. We had Iron Maiden you know the non hair metal bands that came from punk and The acid/hard rock bands of the 70's and 60's. I love Slayer, Willie Nelson, and allthatsgood
Haha! You‘re over 50! (Nelson Muntz, Simpsons, 2023)😂
James is an amazing rhythm player
SO cool to watch bands create in the studio. I'm not a big Metallica fan, but watching them go through the creative process is fascinating.
I really enjoy listening to the RAW audio when they are just jamming and rehearsing. I play in my basement loud as hell all the time and it I record with my phone to mp3 files; it inspires and makes me hopeful to hear what a multi-tracked recording will sound like as we weed through gelling all of our parts together (like they show in this video).
3:35-3:52 "The Four Horseman Part 2"?
I don't care what these so-called "drumming experts" say, I think Lars is a damn good and sturdy drummer.
1:39 ok
His creativity doesn’t match his skill level, he’s super creative just not very good
He my not the best but he is good he's in Metallica for God's sake people are just jealous
jabooky15 have you ever listened AJFA!?
Preach it brother...
Man, I'm in love with his iron cross guitar, that is badass!!!
It's really cool to see the brainstorming and the creativity great bands like Metallica. I really enjoyed watching the randomness of cord play that sounds good that they incorporate seamlessly into the Metallica sound and their current project! Awesome!
Death magnetic is an underrated album, it kick ass, nice riffs and nice tune.
i can't get enough of these documentaries! it's bad ass to watch them and play along as they mess around, too
yes, they're my favourite band, Love everything from KIA to DM
This is favorite band of all time and I have never seen them in concert. Damn oh damn I hope to see that day....
The reason Death Magnetic sounds different is because its Kirk's guitar coming through the right channel which has a different tone than James's guitar. The first 5 albums were only James on rhythm. Death Magnetic has more of a live sound by combining their guitar tones and I personally love it.
Death Magnetic brings the energy for sure
You sure Kirk didn’t play any rhythm on the first 5 albums? There are so many sections of songs that are purely rhythm-driven and it’s hard to imagine Kirk not playing at all during those. Obviously he does it at live shows but are you sure he’s not playing any rhythm on the records?
Yes im 100% certain. Kirk said it himself. Its also obvious from the sound.@@mpchead621
@@mpchead621 Far as I know James played all rythm parts on albums, or like 90%, up until the load albums.
7:11 Kirk's face lmao
Priceless
The King of Riff!!!!
"making those audible"
Look I'm still a beginner, I have less than 4 months under my belt on the guitar and I'm learning the 5,3,5,6,5,3,2,1 (low e) rift. And making the 3,2,1 flow correctly is crazy.
Never miss pinky day
これ筋肉だけじゃなくて、正確なリズム感が寧ろ必要なんだよな…
I was in a church praise team for 3 years and one night when we were practicing I couldn't resist. I had to let out a big YEAH like James Hetfield. Everybody looked at me like I was possessed. I think I'm the only Metallica fan at my church lol
I think one of the coolest things about Metallica is that they play all of their songs together live in the studio. There aren't many bands that can do that. That shows how authentic Metallica is.
Lars face while drumming... is this his "sexy time" face? Jesus, that poor woman...
its cool seeing the songs we love back when they were just being put together.
James Riffield 🤘
damn that was 8 years ago? :O
Yes, the whole video was about the making Death Magnetic, which was released in 2008. And I think this tape was in a CD that comes with the album if you buy it.
Try 11 ..
he is the only one I really admire in metallica
zdechlaksensei I wouldn't say they're nothing but the band itself sure is
Kirk neither? Man..
In the early years they had cliff, but yes Hetfield has been carrying Metallica on his shoulders ever since Cliff died.
Kirk wrote some of their most famous riffs but ok.
GloriousTapeworm so we’re going to forget Lars was the first and sole member who formed the idea, the concept, of Metallica? woah.
@3:35 if only Jason was still around for backing vocals. Big creeping death vibes.
Love ya guts James. I started playing guitar for the same reason he did. I wanted to play drums on guitar. Playing Metallica riffs is the largest platform for which I can do that.
Someone take Lars hi hat away.
😂😂
Need to take that damn china cymbal away. Keep the hi hat, it feels neglected as it is.
And the floor TOMS.theyre just decorations
James needs to sing more like he does there in HQ than how he does live. It just doesn't sound good when he goes really high
bob rock must miss working with these guys. freakin badasses.
wow 7:47 that is (the exact sound of) the recording
7:14 kirk is like "Lars, WTF are you doing!?"
8:30 was rob...
Thats some kickin ass riffs!
James Riff master and king!
0:05 RIP ears...
Lars can actually do a drum roll????
Halling Roosa It's not a surprise.
Richest garage band ever. It's great that they still jam together to work on songs, some bands can't be in the same room together after a couple years.
it is amazing at 00:26 how clean the distortion is
0:00-0:02, you can tell how hard James is loving it when you can hear the friggin' guitar plucking just fine with out the amp.
Hetfield is Metallica. He wrote their most epic riffs. Of course Mustaine and Hammett should also be credited, but Hetfield personified Metallica's sound and style.
8:07 wtf
it's a "talk box" it's used to modulate the song of the fuitar with your voice.
He already used it on load or reload album
Potwheelz frampton
Sweet Emotion
Cynic style
amazing how these old dudes still have the same passion after all these years.
Dude the thing you did on 8:03 is pure creativity
dude its just a yaya effect :P
Best rhythm guitarist ever. And definitely the best guitarist that can juggle both rhythm and singing at the same time. That’s some serious skill.
All the people are asking for name of the songs, wtf? They aren't fans?
Yeah sorry for not recognizing all songs from their 100 albums
The thing I want most of all right now is to meet my favorite band and the persons who influenced me to start play music. It would make my life complete to go to their HQ and just be there and play, talk with them and stuff like that and ofc get my guitar signed!
James Hatfield is Good definition of being a genius
I remember people saying stupid shit like, "Metallica is easy to play it's just fast....."
Having taught myself how to play over the last 4 or 5 years, nothing challenges my fingers like old school Metallica. 1st song I learned was One. Now I can play that, Enter Sandman, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Nothing Else Matters, and my personal favorite, Fade to Black. Been tackling Master of Puppets recently for my oldest, he watched Stranger Things and for the 1st time I heard Metallica in his personal Playlist, since that show shined a spotlight on it.
I'm even trying to teach myself James pick holding technique since he's really the only one I've ever seen hold it with 3 fingers instead of the regular index and thumb style. Takes some getting used to, but I can see why it's good for thrash or speed shredding.
James, on the next album, please play solos. Cuz fuck me im sure as hell they would kill.
Portugal flag hell yeah
Polish flag too yeaa!
Many underrated songs!! Too 10 in my books and James is basically a God
Man I wish I could sing like this how Tujilo does in background with them playing
Lars is brilliant !! So freakin under rated !! I love his kit !! He's a fucking stud !! Lars !!!!!!!!!!!
LOL You have a point :)
Why is Lars riding on a China so much
Cause it fills out the sound and let's the drummer be lazy.
Wow that was awesome
i love this band the play enter the sandman for Rivera and he retired for the Yankees how cool are they and Rivera live this band too
in 9:07 whats the name of the song?... or isnt a song?
+Alejandro Cruz i would like know too
+Yuri Santos its a little "all nightmare long" riff xd
It was originally gonna be Wherever I May Roam 2. But it was transitioned to All Nightmare Long.
@@evanccino6644 I listened to "All NM Long" but couldn't find the similarities with what I hear at @8:30

I'm not gonna say metal people have more maturity than the average UA-cam commenters but it's a strong possibility in that for the comment section about what tuning James uses I don't think I saw one fuck you or insult at all. Fuck it I am gonna say it,we're just better ;) well done friends
geekrockrats Sadly that's just here. "Metal fans" are really horribly immature majority of the time. If it's not insulting a band member, another commentator, or saying they sold out, it's them talking about how much better their favorite band is. (Metal is my favorite genre btw.)
geekrockrats Oh, look; someone just called someone else a fucktard on the tuning comment thread. I knew the positivity wouldn't last long.
hell yeah..nice riff
I've seen them live 3 times now, and in my opinion the even get more energy now :-)
