SYNOPSIS:
In the wake of King Henry IV's death, Isabella crossed her own Rubicon and declared herself Queen. From here on out it would be a struggle for supremacy or death. She moved quickly to secure her husband's allegiance and did it just in time. Portugal would invade with an army to contest her rule.

First just wanna say the artwork, music, and narration are phenomenal, really gets invested in the video.
The Battle of Toro was pretty intense, had me on the edge of my seat. Portugal really gets slept on a lot, not many people realize just how strong it used to be, now it's gotten overshadowed by it's former colony in South America, which is funny and sad at the same time.
The early modern period is my favorite part of European history, especially in terms of warfare, with the introduction of the pike and shot. I find the mix of armored knights, pikemen, and gunpowder weaponry fascinating, and am disappointed it's not represented in fantasy more often, as I just love the Spanish tercios. But there just seems to be this stigma with gunpowder in most medieval fantasy, like people just seem to avoid like the plague. There seems to be this strange idea that gunpowder didn't exist until the 1700s or something.
You make a really good point Darth - Portugal is not perceived in the light of the magnitude of what it was. At one point Spain and Portugal had to make a treaty to divide the world between them
@@FlashPointHx Exactly, it was one of the first true global empires in the world. Colonizing South America, going around Africa, fighting the Ottomans as far as India etc. On top of being one of the last colonial empires by the end of the 20th century.
Though the history of colonial empires is controversial, there's no denying Portugal has some pretty amazing feats, on top of it's amazing longevity, yet it's mostly remembered for being part of the Iberian Union, or under Napoleon's thumb. Kinda like how the French are mostly remembered for their quick surrender in WWII.
It's only made worse by the fact that when most people think of the Portuguese language, their first thought is most likely Brazil. No hate to Brazilians or anything, I love the country, but Portugal seems to consistently draw the short end of the stick for some reason.
I'm a Portugese-American, and understanding more about Portugal makes me feel that much more connected to my heritage. My father stated that some of our ancestors were on the first Portugese ships to reach Japan, Macau and Brazil.
Your presentations regarding Iberian history are my absolute favorites. Great job, as always.

Once again fantastic video. Just got back from my Honeymoon and Segovia was the 1st place we visited once we landed in Madrid. Didn't know how big a part it played in Isabella's assent.

@@FlashPointHx Yes, that's the 1st place we headed. We walked from there to the Castle which was perched on a high cliff. Found out it used to be a Cannon Academy. Was a lovely place. Probably would have stayed longer but we were only in Madrid for 2 days.
@@MorningStar293 Madrid one of the best cities that my wife and I stayed at. We got a hotel near the Puerto Del Sol for a week and a half and just spent days checking out various quarters of the city. We never got a chance to get to Segovia - so that is a definite on the next trip. Happy that you guys enjoyed !

By the way id like to point out a very minor incorrection, Duarte de Almeida - the Portuguese Royal Standard Bearer - Surprisingly, survived the battle! He lingered in Castile for a few months and then returned to his family estate in Portugal.
He had a major hand in this battle

Thank you for this educational video! Somehow all the books i read and the shows only mentioned the unification of Isabella and Ferdinand, there was no mention of this war with Portugal nor of the treaty results that almost forced the two to head west instead of south.

You know if these Spanish Christians didn't fight against each other,the Reconquista would have ended much earlier and hell even the Portuguese ended their Reconquista much earlier than the Spanish did.
Very true - If they had been united the Reconquista would have ended in the 11th century after the fall of the Caliphate of Cordoba in 1031

@@jasonpalacios1363 Well they didn't have a choice - Ferdinand III of Castile Leon beat them to Cordoba and Seville - then he made Granada his vassal. At that point Portugal had no place else to go in Iberia. But in a way this drove them to lead the way with naval power.
@@FlashPointHx You know the Portuguese and the Spanish should have united together to defeat the Muslims right after Cordoba and Sevilla were reconquered especially Portugal finished their war against the Muslims earlier.

You are creating a character out of nowhere. Fernando was not the guy you portrait, he loved burocreacy, diplomacy, administrative plans and had a very broad humanist education since he was a kid, he was involved in the adminsitration of the kingdom of Aragon when he was just a Kid. HE transformed Castille based on Aragon administratve institutions, And yes, he was a great military commander too, Best King Spain ever had

Wait, did you just say Ferdinand wasn't good at Latin? He was literally the guy who taught Isabella latin (because her own mother was of the opinion that Latin was barbaric and need not be taught to her children) until Beatriz de Galindo took over her latin lessons. This was because Isabella dismissed pretty much every male tutor she had before Ferdinand because she had felt insecure.
And also, the Concord of Segovia was a humiliating capitulation, one that even Isabella's own party doubted Ferdinand would concede to. But Ferdinand, being ever the machiavellian, planned out the whole scenario and conceded. In it, he had to give up all claims to the Castilian throne and the document laid out the separation of power between the two by which Ferdinand had next to no say on matters concerning the castilian state. Ferdinand did this knowing he would get the opportunity to re-negotiate the terms once the Portuguese came knocking. They did, and the roles were reversed. On April 28 1475, Isabella ceded equal powers to Ferdinand via an amendment with him getting supreme authority on Castile's military, bureaucratic and foreign policy while the others required the consent of both parties.
I didn't say he didn't know it - I just said he wasn't as good as Isabella got - at least from the books that I've read this seemed to be the case
@@FlashPointHx I don't mean to be nit-pick or continually contradict you but maybe books like The Queen's Vow aren't exactly the best source material. Instead, I'd suggest something like Sir John H. Elliott's Imperial Spain.
Ferdinand was one of the most cut-throat political power players of his time. Quite literally the inspiration for Machiavelli's 'The Prince.' He was infamous during the Italian Wars for authoring treaties, ratifying them and then having his opponents be the one to break them at a time of his choosing while the blame never could be pinned on him because the language of said treaties always seemed to favor him. THAT'S how much of an intricate knowledge he had of Latin. And this is without taking into consideration the way he traced old archived documents all the way back to the 1200s and Charles d' Anjou to force Pope Julius II to name him 'King of Jerusalem' like all Neapolitan Kings before him.

I picked up on the way Ferdinand is being portray as a the minor, intellectually less capable player of both.
Both of them were obviously great political/ historic figures in their own right. Allies that used each others wealth and political power to further their own cause.
I don't understand the need to put one down in order to highlight the other - that doesn't seem right to me.
It really takes away from an all in all well done presentation - sad.
Ferdinand didn’t made a concordant with Isabella in Aragon. That’s not correct.
He was the only acknowledged lord in Aragon. The concordant of Segovia in Castile did gave Ferdinand power in Castile as the queen’s husband, he was allowed to dispense Justice, and make laws with her, but not the other way around when he became king of Aragon.
Although that was not really a loss for Isabella, of the two crowns, Castile was by far the most important one. It was the most populous, 4 million people lived in Castile and 1 million in Aragon at the time. Meaning higher income from taxes and the wealthier of the two. There is a reason when Christopher Columbus does his expedition, the one to subsidize it is Castile and not Aragon, same with the conquest of Granada, and Navarre, and Naples. Although Naples was under the crown of Aragon, but the conquest of it was done with Castilian armies anyway.
Well like you said the more important part was that Isabella was sharing power with her husband for the lion's share of Iberia
Isabel of castile or " la católica" -" the católic" was a woman who had to face great challenges and always managed yo prevail over them
She was the " nother" of modern Spain with the territorial unification no laws with Aragón and the deeds if discoveries to support them and precursor of the " siglo de oro" español or spanish golden age at all levels in xvl century
She would set a precedent for other woman as well. Catherine of Aragon would hold true to her convictions, Elizabeth I of England would shortly lead her nation to its Golden Age, Catherine de Medici would show that a woman was just as smart as any man, and Maria of Austria would prove to be an incredible statesman.

27:33 the conquest of Granada was triggered by the Turk conquest and occupation of the city of Otranto in Naples, souther Italy, in 1580-81.
This was the first time that the powerful Turks that had conquered Constantinople 25 years earlier had made a successful incursion and occupation in the Italian peninsula. Naples was under the Trastamara dynasty of Naples, to which the the king of Aragon, Ferdinand had a strong claim, seeing this development both Castile and Aragon moved swiftly and promptly to help oust the Turks from Otranto, and as soon as this was done, the war of Granada started in 1582.
Granada needed to be under Christian control, because it could become a launching point for the Muslim Turks into Iberia. This had to be avoided at all costs.

Also because he tells it within the context of the time, which can be challenging when writing about controversial historical figures.

The Portuguese stopped conquering land in the península much before the Castillians. They didn't finish their "reconquista" before the Castillians. Granada was just as Portuguese as it was Castillian or Aragonese, not at all, and the Algarve before the Portuguese conquest was not Portuguese at all.

@@FlashPointHx probably the most beautiful land of all Spain and also some of the best food of the peninsula. If you ever go but don't want to walk the whole Camino de Santiago, go to Leon to the upper badlands and cross into Galicia in the direction of las Medulas and Villafranca del Bierzo. I've never seen a land more beautiful and you will feel yourself transported to that time when the old knights ride to watch the frontier.
