At 41:32 there is a panel that shows swastikas. It shows a priest at a table, covered with a cloth. on the cloth there are swastikas. Where can I find more information on this panel? I am curious about it. Did anyone else notice this?
A lot of people have noticed this. These are taken from the Cantigas de Santa Maria. Swastikas were a relatively common symbol in medieval religious works. They have nothing to do with their 20th cen connotation. I've even read somewhere that Hitler might have gotten the idea to use the Swastika from the church he used to attend as a child.
This is an excellent academic and understandable Summary with references. This is a great and entertaining way to learn and prepare for our upcoming trip to the south of Spain in September of 2023!
Astonishing chronicle! And this comes from a Spaniard who wasn't taught as much in highschool as I've come to learn from your videos. Of course I knew about Alfonso X el Sabio, but never with the depth and dramatism that you narrated his story. Thanks!
You really have high quality work! It's really a great experience watching your videos! Hopefully, you'll make a series after the Reconquista like the Hapsburg-Ottoman Wars which expanded the scope of Spain's war against Islam to a Global Scale.
Thank you! Hapsburgs and Ottomans were the superpowers of their time. Would make an interesting narrative. First let me get up to the Aztec and Inca =)
@@FlashPointHx Yes please. I would also like to get to know more about Spanish campaigns among the Aztecs and Incans. Just some caveats though. Spaniards actually used Aztecs and Incans in their wars with Muslims in Southeast Asia. Take for example the conqueror of Muslim Manila, Juan de Salcedo was born in Mexico and had a romance with Princess Kandarapa of Tondo who was Buddhist. There were also scores of Mexican-Mollucan hybrids who settled in the Sultanates of Ternate and Tidor while it was under Spanish occupation before they retreated to the Philippines... Source: www.academia.edu/20365981/Transpacific_Mestizo_Religion_and_Caste_in_the_Worlds_of_a_Moluccan_Prisoner_of_the_Mexican_Inquisition There was even a Ternatean Sultan who was captured by the Spanish and deported to Manila where he lived as a Christian. Source: Zamboangueño Chavacano: Philippine Spanish Creole or Filipinized Spanish Creole? By Tyron Judes D. Casumpang. Conquistador Sebastian Corcuera former governor of Panama used Incans and Bolivians as well as troops all across Peru to wage war against Sultan Kudarat of Maguindanao... en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebasti%C3%A1n_Hurtado_de_Corcuera There was another unknown front in the Spanish-Turkish Wars that were not just in the Mediterranean, there was a front here in Southeast Asia. The Sultanate of Aceh submitted itself as a vassal and territory of the Ottoman Caliphate and thus went head to head against the Iberian Union... From Wikipedia... The racial make-up of the Christian side was diverse since it were usually made up of Mestizos, Mulattoes and Native Americans (Aztecs, Mayans and Incans) who were gathered and sent from Mexico and were led by Spanish officers who had worked together with native Filipinos in military campaigns across the Southeast Asia. The Muslim side though was also equally racially diverse. In addition to the native Malay warriors, the Ottomans had repeatedly sent military expeditions to nearby Aceh. The expeditions were composed mainly of Turks, Egyptians, Swahilis, Somalis, Sindhis, Gujaratis and Malabars.[10] These expeditionary forces had also spread to other nearby Sultanates such as Brunei and had taught local mujahideen new fighting tactics and techniques on how to forge cannons. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castilian_War I think the Philippines scenario would be the only recorded instances wherein Aztec Eagle Warriors clashed with Ottoman Jannisaries never mind that the Cagayan Battles where the only cases wherein Samurais encountered Conquistadors. But do focus on Mexico and the Incans more, their histories are understudied. And although ours is even more understudied than theirs, they should have chronological priority however.
@@FlashPointHx Also the next generation of Reconquista can focus on Spain helping the Reconquista of the nations allied under it. Hungary for example was invaded by the Ottomans and what was left of Hungary became "Royal Hungary" and was given to the Hapsburgs and they reconquered Hungary from the Ottomans. Tondo in the Philippines for example was reduced by th Bruneians but when To do allied under Spain, they reconquered their Philippine territories.
Awesome! For whatever reason I discovered your channel only quite recently though this period is, with the nineteenth century- complete different subject- and the whole Norman and Rus history a very favorite of mine since I read my very first book on the subject back in 2003 (Pierre Guichard's "an History of Andalus") and even before to be perfectly honest. Damn you give me such an emotional response to history. I love it. Thank you. This is really what history is though, it isn't talking about old dead dudes, its telling a story. You can take a moral from the story, but regardless of anything, it was a mans life. It has the same functions as fiction, yet, is more impactful because we can look around us and see what they did, not just imagine it. Thank you for doing history justice :)

Your narration mixed with humour, philosophical quotes and figures is also different and has a feel like you are telling it like you were actually there. If not the Mongols what else..the Huns before them, Ottomans, entire history of ancient Egypt, Islamic conquest of Asia, Indian and Hindu civilization and its impact on the East, the Vikings, the Slave trade and African history? Well lots to think of I guess..

Thanks. I'm looking for shipping records of ships to the west coast/Pacific Ocean in the 1600s. A Spanish cutlass has been found in the Interior of BC, Canada. impressive story telling, well done. so many intricate nuances. i would have enjoyed a little more connection with the roman empire, how the provinces split, population that remained, absorption, etc. but phenomenal job
Happy that you liked it! I have a podcast on Attila the Hun (audio only) that talks a bit about the fall of Rome if you're interested
The Age of Exploration is a continuation of the Reconquista. Would be amazing to see your take on it.
when a civilization has faced this level of conflict and finally emerge the victor, one can see why they'd be so ready to seek out new life and new civilization and boldly conquer, enslave, and subjugate where no one has conquered, enslaved, and subjugated before.

War educates the senses, calls into action the will, perfects the physical constitution, brings men into such swift and close collision in critical moments that man measures man.

This is part one of four ;)
Astonishing chronicle! And this comes from a Spaniard who wasn't taught as much in highschool as I've come to learn from your videos. Of course I knew about Alfonso X el Sabio, but never with the depth and dramatism that you narrated his story. Thanks!

Great work in this video btw!
Source:
www.academia.edu/20365981/Transpacific_Mestizo_Religion_and_Caste_in_the_Worlds_of_a_Moluccan_Prisoner_of_the_Mexican_Inquisition
There was even a Ternatean Sultan who was captured by the Spanish and deported to Manila where he lived as a Christian.
Source:
Zamboangueño Chavacano: Philippine Spanish Creole or Filipinized Spanish Creole? By Tyron Judes D. Casumpang.
Conquistador Sebastian Corcuera former governor of Panama used Incans and Bolivians as well as troops all across Peru to wage war against Sultan Kudarat of Maguindanao...
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebasti%C3%A1n_Hurtado_de_Corcuera
There was another unknown front in the Spanish-Turkish Wars that were not just in the Mediterranean, there was a front here in Southeast Asia.
The expeditions were composed mainly of Turks, Egyptians, Swahilis, Somalis, Sindhis, Gujaratis and Malabars.[10] These expeditionary forces had also spread to other nearby Sultanates such as Brunei and had taught local mujahideen new fighting tactics and techniques on how to forge cannons.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castilian_War
I think the Philippines scenario would be the only recorded instances wherein Aztec Eagle Warriors clashed with Ottoman Jannisaries never mind that the Cagayan Battles where the only cases wherein Samurais encountered Conquistadors.

I hope you enjoyed your holidays with your family by the way. Take care!
Hey thank you for the kind words! I haven't read this book that you mention - but Andalus has become more and more intriguing. Hoping to plan a trip there next spring.

This was such a good comment, I had to share this on twitter - thank you! Its comments like this that keep a video podcaster going =)
Wow just amazed, so interesting how you connect everything and make it both interesting and understandable also you look deeper into what the Leaders and important Players could have been thinking and the reasoning for the decisions that they made. Great work this series is...please do an entire series also of the Mongols..
Would love to - but my friends over at kings and generals have already beaten me to it.
@@FlashPointHx I have seen some of their "Mongols" episodes which is also a good series but your version if you did it would definitely also be more than worth watching, the step by step order of events and how they all end up being connected as you repeat them in other related videos I find leave a long lasting impression.
@@wilhelmhesse1348 let me see if I have the bandwidth to get into the mongols after this is all said and done
@@FlashPointHx I've seen the K&G Mongol series as well. I think it's a good idea for people from all over the world to do projects of the same subject so us learning can use each contrast to better help retain the info... among other reasons.
If you do get into the Mongol era, I'd say not to borrow from K&G so your work would stand on it's own. I doubt it would be a conflict of interest since whoever watches one will watch the other. Everyone wins!
