I upgraded to the 315P and it’s by far my favorite ship at the moment, it just genuinely feels like what a luxury solo spaceship would feel like when I’m inside, like it may be small but it doesn’t feel cramped. If I had one wish it would be that you could replace the tractor beam with like a mining laser
At the moment it's pretty useless. Not in the sense that it's bad but the 300i base variant is better or the same in everything but quantum fuel range. But after all this is an explorer and its two main features are a tractor beam as well as scanning/exploration equipment, which both aren't in the game yet. So eventually the 315p will just be awesome.
As somebody (newly) in a mining corporation. This is a great ship for a Mole scouting team. Imagine if your tractor beam could then sort the Quant pieces from the crap to optimise the run. Plus I prefer the exterior and interior over the 300i. The only oddity is the duel cargo bay.
I know rite, it look so big and roomy I think the drop the ball when they came up with the back story. Cause the terrapin looks like an awesome lil baby freight/explorer. Instead of just pure recon lame.
Ship modularity will probably play into this. Terrapin is also a very easy ship to come out with more variants as well. Who knows. But I have to imagine there will be a search and rescue and military variants eventually.
I really do not understand what a minuscule cargo capacity would do for a specialized ship like the Terrapin. I mean you wouldn’t go grocery shopping in a Ferrari or would you?
I think you are the first one to explain to me just exactly what exploration ships are and can do. Thats really dope. Thats totally doing to be my playstyle.
I'd love to see the in-lore alleged "APC" capability of the Terrapin restored at least as a configurable option. And a real cargo grid as well, even if only as a third separately-available mode. To do either, they'll need to make either an alternate version of the ship with the central scanner seat/array completely removable/replaceable, or else retro-fit that functional modularity into the existing model. Either way, as much as I appreciate the outward design configuration of the Terrapin, to me it's just another one of the most egregious examples of CIG arbitrarily limiting the potential versatility of some of their ship designs, for dubious/suspect reasons. Especially at the listed price, this ruins the appeal of the Terrapin for me, at least in its present form.
Fantastic video, Law! Two of the ships I have been using lately and both serve their purpose very differently, as you stated in the wonderful vid you made. The 315p does take Stealth components and with one shield turned off and in stealth mode is very difficult to detect. I suppose with its modest cargo hold for its size, could be a viable smuggler for these reasons. Terrapin is a brick to fly overall and has a slow SCU speed but can get up to just over 1200 m/s at full bore. This makes for a good getaway especially if your medium radar (by SC ratio, three times as powerful or that much more range) detects the smaller foes closing while its top speed will allow it to outrun those bigger than itself. Its VTOL capability should make it very capable in high gravity/low altitude situations. AND do not forget it is designed to handle dangerous environments like in the new systems we may see soon...
'modest cargo for it's size'. Lol. Right now it literally has the highest cargo capacity of anything in it's size class. But I guess it's all a matter of perspective...
I am continually amazed at the depth and breadth of both your knowledge and insight. I am also very impressed at how you broke out the 315 versus the terapin and their individual styles of play as Pathfinder vehicles. Keep up the good work. I have subscribed to you
Well done! I'm glad you took your time and didn't rush to get through some main bullet points. Must have taken a lot of time to make this video! Appreciate it! 👍🏽
I just watched youngbloods video from 3 years ago about exploration ships and was really wanting an updated exploration ship video. This sated my needs. Thank you good sir!
Another great one! You really give the most relevant information on ANY ship in your videos and this comparison doesn't disappoint - worth having both ships IMO. The saga of the possessed 315p at end of the video was classic AF!
Very interesting comparison Law. Both share that similar “pathfinder” label, but in reality, both are very different in roles and uses. I view the 315p as an exploration/pathfinder “generalist”, able to sample various roles in the exploration family of ships. The Terrapin on the other hand, seems razor focused on its scanner/radar abilities which are superb for its size. Like you mentioned, it’s should be great at radar/scanner data collection and Picket Duty / Raid Warning for fleet ops. I own and love both, but for very different reasons. Great vid as always Law. Hope to see you in verse again soon.
I'll definitely see you soon. I want to get a group together as soon as 3.7 hits the PTU so we can test out the new mission sharing feature, so a little Spelunking and some FPS mining.
great detail in the script and video editing is super well done, i feel like i can actually WATCH instead of ASMR style listen while working. I love this content, instant sub :)
I went with the 315p due to the cost savings over the Terrapin. Not to knock the Terrapin (much) but it is way overpriced for what you get, especially with no cargo capacity at all and no second bed for that scanner operator.
Curious how crazy the durability of the Terrapin is if you divert all power to shields, have it landed, hulled down, and locked up. Reason I ask is if you find yourself being chased by pirates, would it be viable to bunker down and call for help? I doubt small-arms fire or even many rockets would do much to the thing.
I absolutely adore the design of the Terrapin - It just looks so fundamentally *real*. The only issue is that scanner station position, and as someone else has said, move it to one side and you have the space you need for optional cargo or seats.
It's supposed to be inspiring from the Navy's E2C Hawkeye which works the same. It's strategically placed there for real world reasons. I suggest you read about it, its actually a really important aircraft. Without it, the US Navy would be blind.
Nice and in depth vid ! Wasn't the 300 series supposed to have a specialized hydrogen-scoop, something only origin had or simply a superior technology to other companies? ... point is that would give the 315p a distinct advantage over every other deep exploration vessel of it's class.
Something that always gets me with these ships is all the wasted space. Terrapin needs more to fill the space around the scanning seat, unless it's gonna be filled with holograms?? or have options to remove the scanning functionality for a cargo bay, or troop jump seats, or an RV like mobile home interior, or a heap of other options..??? How about a Artillery support option? Like people are caling it a "Flying Tank", so why not use all that extra space to store large ballistic rounds, and the roof scanner/seat into a size 4 - 6 turret for the second player. Maybe some kind of 105mm - 150mm Howitzer, 75mm Bofor, or even some dual, twin linked 30mm gatlings (think A10 warthog)??? Maybe even rip out the seat and turret all together and just install some missile racks or some mining functionality. I can think of 100's of ways off the top of my head to fill the space, and use it more effectively, without having to empty or too cluttered to be unable to walk around in it... So much to be had with this ship's really amazingly designed base frame, yet so much wasted potential. Also there's plenty of space within the ship model of the 315 to have the toilet sink into the floor and a fixed shower head above.. and having storage under it's sink/kitchenette area... I don't understand why CIG purposefully withholds functionality.. Especially when there's plenty of space within the Graphical model for it... Unless they are just consistently making these small oversights as mistakes? As an easy fix, why not have added some removable ship "saddle bags".. imagine having compartments you could just bolt onto the outside of the ship. Messing up the Aerodynamocs a bit, yes, but as an explorer/pathfinder ship. Speed and Aerodynamics aren't what you should be after. More fuel and item storage should trump everything. You shouldn't be getting into fire fights or be in too much of a rush while exploring. Also another wasted opportunity imo, is the 890 jump. All that flat open top deck space and no EVA deck with railings? Would be amazing to host unsuited, in atmosphere parties upon it's deck - like they do on modern super yachts... Except instead of floating on a river or the ocean, you could slowly cruise amongst/past the skyscrapers of Arccorp or around the megastructure of Hurston. or Even have Suited EVA shenanigans in an asteroid field or some other space point of interest, like modern scuba divers around reefs and wrecks...
Curious if the radar dish on the terrapin will let it fill a role similar to an AWACS to help fighters find and engage things they may have trouble finding on their own
I love my Terrapin. In the PU I have it equipped with stealth-class components, so even if the power and shields are medium-sized, I can still sneak around with no issues. It won't out-stealth a Talon or Eclipse or anything, but its signature is low enough that I use it when doing delivery missions or when I need to get somewhere undetected (Or whenever I'm hovering around Kareah to scout it out first when I accidentally get a crimestat and need to get rid of it). Just keep the weapons off and suppress IR and you're almost as stealthy as a stealth-kitted Arrow, IR and EM-wise. Though I imagine the Cross-Section signature has a big difference. P.S. That clip at the end was hilarious.
I've watched this video twice now and I'm still having trouble deciding on if I want to CCU my 315 to the Pin. I like the utility that the 315 brings with the tractor beam and cargo space, but I feel so cramped and claustrophobic in it. The lack of a shower hurts a bit for me as well. I much prefer the interior feel of the Terrapin because I feel like it gives me breathing room and has the shower in addition to everything else the 315 has. The price and lack of any SCU for spare parts hurts it though.
@@aesericho3651 Last time I flew the Terrapin was at the Expo last year and thoroughly enjoyed it then. I didn't even do anything productive with it, I just flew around sight seeing with it and had a blast. The lack of cargo grid is the biggest thing that's bothering me about it. I don't want to run cargo with it, but I would like to be able to keep some spare parts for repairs or be able to pick up a box for a mission in the future and not worry about it flying around on the inside damaging the contents or even the ship like the devs said would happen in the future. I feel like the 315p is an extremely good deal for the price you pay compared to what you get, in a similar vein as the Cutlass Black. That's where my hesitation comes in. The future is so uncertain with the Terrapin (since it's the test bed for item 2.0) that I'm worried about not being able to do just basic things with it that the 315p could do for over 3x the price.
@@SuperGankBros I completely agree. Even 1-2 scu cargo would go a long way. I'm very optimistic with the terrapin since I have both. Hopefully it pans out. you'd like to give it another go, let me know and I'll log in for you.
terrapin should really be super modular, while it seems to be good for certain specific things, the APC aspect is glaring. and if it was an APC and the chair moved or changed, i could imagine swapping out the scanner for a turret and being a proper drop ship for mid combat drops
This variant should stay exactly how it is. We need other variants though. U4A-1: No chair. RIO seat behind the pilot seat like the Cutlass. Add a 2nd bunk so it can actually support a crew of 2 without hot-bunking. Give it 20 SCU cargo space. Replace the utility slot with the chin turret from the Valkyrie (another old Anvil ship) slaved to the RIO seat. We know Anvil likes remote turrets. Again, see the Valkyrie. This would make for an awesome little 'blockade runner' and combat transport. Able to get small amounts of cargo into and out of dangerous locations and able to defend itself moderately well. U4A-2: Same as above, no chair. RIO seat behind the cockpit. Remote turret slaved to the RIO seat. Removes ALL sleeping accommodations, including the microwave and head/shower. Removes the gun rack and storage too. Reenables the starboard side door and ramp. Adds in 2 rows of jump seats for troops. Also adds a pair of GT-210s to the doors like the Valkyrie. Basically, this version would be a small drop ship. More heavily armored than a Valkyrie but smaller and not able to carry as many troops. Sort of like a special forces infil/exfil transport when something the size of a Valkyrie is just too big. U4A-4: No chair. RIO seat behind the pilot seat. Has the accommodations of the U4A-1 but replaces the turret with a torpedo launcher. Also in those grill-like structures that flank the cockpit you could put a bunch of size 3 missiles. This would be a missileboat variant. Just a few things you could do with this spaceframe without even altering the model much at all. This little ship just screams "THROW ROLES AT ME PLEASE!!".. It's like the MRAP of the UEE and it should be every bit as versatile.
I feel like when people think of exploration the thing in everyones mind is finding new solar system and planets, which obviously they will never be able to make that type of content fast enough. They will probably find a way to fill space with new things to discover, like asteroids, comets, meteors ,meteoroids and man made objects (Like broken ship parts or parts from old spacestations) that drift around without showing up on any maps until these exploration focused ships find them. And they could crash down on planets aswell so explorers have to scan the surface of planets. These types of things could be randomly generated and spawned so they wouldnt have to be manually made every time while still being something new everytime. This would also make an automatic symbiotic relationship between explorers and miners / salvagers. The explorers travel around with their much faster more fuel efficient ships and better scanners and find these different objects, they then report back to different hubs like planetside cities or spacestations where they sell this information. Or they could use the information themselves ofcourse, by changing ship and mining themselves or giving it to friends and split the profit. These would then pop up on a quest hub of some sort, either an NPC or a billboard thing, where miners and salvagers could pick it up and do the job. Also once the information is sold to the hub, it could either be free information and its basically a race to get the resources, or make it so that you buy the mining/salvaging rights off the hub.
The Terrapin reminds me of a sniper pair. Spotter and sniper, but here it's driver and system user(?), both made to stay out in the field for longer periods of time while relying on stealth to remain undetected while competing their mission. It's made to first and foremost protect it's crew, which is a very nice thing to see in a military ship. It's center seat could potentially be folded towards the roof when not in use to allow for additional space and it could easily be outfitted with seats for 10-20 men (if you ignore comfort) which in turn would allow it to act as a transport. I also see enough room for them to install a med bay allowing it to act as a Medevac. The circular mount-looking spot could potentially be used for a better long range directional sensor, a BFG or the new QED. I really like how it has the potential of like the black hawk chopper filling multiple roles in an army. Personally this is one of those ships i can see myself owning a long long time, constantly changing it's interior and exterior with new modules and functions. Hell it's about as big as my apartment and if added a kitchen... i wouldn't mind living there. :)
As a Explorer pathfinder, you would think the fuel tanks would be bigger and hold more as they would be on the outskirts of the verse and not near refueling stations. Can you put in larger fuel tanks?
I suspect that the 315 will excel at charting jump points and selling the navigation data. Other ships cant use it as an autopilot, but they can use it like GPS navigation to warn the pilot when to turn. I expect that the Terrapin will excel at gathering data for other industry professions (ie: mining, fuel harvesting, flora for medication/drugs) Both ships can do both, I suspect that they will have their strong suits.
They need to add the need to strap on your sit before and after QT for more realism, if you don't do that force would throw you against a wall hurting you badly and/or kill you. Also needs directional extra speed like supersonic something in between afterburner and orbital QT without the need of a marker for a quick exit of situations or reaching places faster.
Are there any ships that maximize scanning range and speed in the pathfinder category even at the expense of armour? I would love to have the 315p but instead of 4 extra SCU have a much better scanner.
The Terrapin is just so disappointing with the wasted space in the back. If the data operator seat were moved somewhere less insane, it would have plenty of room for cargo. I don't think I could live with having that frustrating flaw.
They will add blade racks and avionics boxes all around that seat to allow data collection when they will be added in game. Right now you can see them inside the MSR, the Vanguard sentinel and at new Babbage microtech store.Being an older model, the Terrapin has just empty spaces, unlike the MSR and like the Constellation Aquila. That empty space in the Terrapin will be filled very quickly.
I have to wonder if there will be a fix for small ground vehicles to be transported in the 315p, seems like it should a perfect fit, and would be something a luxury company would intentionally design to work together.
I am now in love with the Terrapin. I hope the developers find a way to make scanning complex and engaging. There's alot of possibilities to make scanning an interesting mechanic. I'm rooting for their ability to make this an awesome game overall, and make all branches meaningful and rewarding :)
Hello, i have a question, Is there a Real difference between normal And exploration scanners And other loadout? Because if it is, than i see some advantage, but od there is none or just a slight difference, it makes no sense to take out any of the exploration ships And i would rather take Cutlass, as it is soooo versatile. And another question, since the CIG will have customization for players, is there any option to add something like kitchen to terrapin, or shower-toilet kombo on 315p? Thank you for answers and thanks for great videos
Yea they both offer different game play for sure. The Mercury will be stealing data as appose to scanning for it. Maybe it can do a little of the other too.
I'm fairly new to SC and thinking about what i'd do in game starting out, what ships i'd want etc. I have to say i LOVE the look and role of this ship. They really need to lean into the utility aspect and build modules to swap into that slot. I haven't pledged yet but if they had this ship in a package, yeah i'd be on board PDQ. That said I do think it needs another pass though. Maybe enlarge the cockpit for a second seat where the scan operator would sit(either side by side or inline). That would free up the center space for small cargo, medical bed, jump seats etc.. Edit: As someone new to SC your videos are invaluable in helping to understand the ships and the roles in game. You are probably the best creator right now so keep up the good work.
I wonder if rsi plan to allow ships to continue on the momentum slidding through space as if it is actually space with zero g and zero viscosity. For example... I am traveling in quantum and get interdicted near some asteroids and i decide to kill all power to my ship at once. Will I still love through space as if i was in real space or will it be some rsi magic space that stops me nearly instantly? True space mechanics would make things a lot more interesting under such aspects as you will nearly eliminate your signature while still moving in the final direction as what your ship was moving giving you the ability to give your assailants
Hey, in game right now, you can put your ship at max cruise speed, then hit the decoupled option and cut the engines -> infinite travel in space, no more 'gas' needed. Well untill you run out of o2 and food...isn't that a real legit space sim ;) Notice also that the 315p has stealth componants, your wishes have been fulfilled...fly with minimal 'noise' and safe buddy o7
It's still hard to judge what exploration ships are really going to be doing in the end. Especially the smaller ones. Still, it is worth noting the nods to their function that do show up ingame already - you can particularly see this with the 315p, since it has close relatives for other roles. And since for various reasons I ended up with a 315p, 325a and 350r... It's worth noting the 12 SCU of cargo of the 315 is currently the largest for anything classified as a 'small' ship. - though this will undoubtedly change once the Hull A is available. It's also worth noting that the 315p has 700 units of Quantum fuel to the other variant's 583 units. Which is about 20% extra. It also has the most efficient quantum drive in the lineup. For that matter, it really stands out when flying a 325a or a 350r especially how much more quickly these variants burn through hydrogen fuel compared to a 315p. Do a trip from lorville to Area 18 in a 350r and you'll probably be down to about 30-60% hydrogen fuel on arrival depending on how you fly and any detours you took (Especially in atmosphere) Do the same in a 315p and you'll likely be in the 60-80% remaining fuel range, if not more. So there's definitely some substantial changes to the 315p's endurance, even if it's still not impressive compared to larger ships. For comparison, a 600i doing the same route will be at 90+% hydrogen fuel if you abuse it, and may even regenerate enough in atmosphere to be at 99% or even 100% on arrival if you fly more gracefully. Of course, a 600i is also an explorer - even mine, which has a touring module. But because the 600i is modular, rather than being a set of variants, it has the same basic performance regardless of internal equipment. (meaning the touring 'variant' still has explorer grade engines and scanners.) So... it might not be dramatic, but explorers definitely do have extended endurance...
From what I remember reading about jump points years ago, they're going to have different sized 'tunnels' you will need to manually navigate through in order to chart them. The 315p with its improved maneuverability sounds perfect for the task of mapping the smallest jump points, it could be vital for finding the most cost-effective trade routes and selling that info to haulers.
What I would like to see are manipulators for the Terrapin replacing the weapon mount like those on a submersible, what I thought one role of the terrapin was going to be. But in the end, for what the Terrapin brings to the field it is way to much overpriced. I have the feeling it needs a second utility hardpoint at the very least. @14:22 The Terrapin has a microwave? Where? You also mentioned the possibility of other utility items instead of the dish. I thought that is something of the past. All in all a good video.
Love your comparisons, how do you get those nice 'hudless' shots of everything? I'd love to see some terrapin variants, specific S&R, or maybe a 'tank' with the upper turret swapped out.
For me, I think I would use the 315p to do solo runs, because if I were to bring anyone else, I would use my Carack. I know that disqualifies me from the choices lol. Just say'n. Also great reviews Law, I enjoy watching your stat comparisons on the different ships. Great break down.
With the Terripin having a history being used as an APC(armoured personel carrier) can we expect a dropship variant or the ability to load it out with seating for troops
I have the 315P and a Terrapin to use as explorers based out of my 890 Jump hanger. I can't decide what my configuration will be, a 315P, and two 100 series in the hanger, or a terrapin and two 100 series ships in the hanger. I want to use the Terrapin for it's durability, I like the thought of being able to withstand attacks long enough to get back to my capitol ships shielded hanger, but it seems much more attractive to have an 890 Jump outfitted with only Origin series ships and vehicles.
In current stats the Ranger is 3.7x2x2 metres. So, probably not. Though, there is a decent chance those stats are a bit weird. More interestingly, an x1 is 5.5x1.3x1.5 If you can lay THAT on it's side then the clearance issue is a matter of 5 cm... And if they don't allow that, it's clearly quite deliberate that it can't carry any vehicles. 1.5 metres is also only 25cm, so that's also arguable... But, I suspect we won't be so lucky. Pity. They seem to like doing this to Origin ships. A 600i can't carry a vehicle either if it has the touring module. When pretty much any other ship remotely in it's size class can carry a vehicle. And the Constellation Phoenix somehow manages to have a full luxury interior, snub fighter, AND space for a vehicle or up to 96 scu of cargo... While the 600i with touring module is NO vehicles of any kind, and... 16 scu? (plus it's 30 metres longer...) Yeah, they REALLY don't seem to want Origin ships carrying vehicles huh. Unless you sacrifice a lot of stuff specifically for that purpose (600i explorer module.)
@@KuraIthys I know they list the ranger as 2 meters high, but that CANNOT be right. We have seen the pictures of these things with people standing next to them, and unless those pepe are 10 feet tall, that bike is not 2 meters tall.. I'm not quite certain what you mean by 1.5 Meters = 25 cm.. Possibly a typo. But 1.5. Meters = 150 cm. And yes, CIG is famous for making ships "not quite big enough" to carry something. Whereas, a real life manufacturer would be forced by competition to make it big enough. Because if you won't make your 300i big enough to carry the bike, I'll make a similar ship that will
@Ted Wendelboe - I know the metric system pretty damn well. It's not a typo. (but I concede reading it back it's not quite clear what I was implying with that. It's not obvious I meant clearance, just like in the last sentence.) I'm talking about the extra clearance required in the cargo bay of the 315p The bay can hold 1 SCU vertically, that's not in dispute. And 1 SCU is, by definitions given in lore posts, a 125 cm cube. That means the bay needs to be 25 cm taller than 1 SCU of cargo to fit a 1.5 metre tall vehicle inside. 150-125 = 25 Similarly, 130 - 125 = 5 Can you follow the logic of what I wrote now, or do I need to explain it further? And yeah, the Ranger's stats of 3.7x2x2 seem all kinds of wrong. XD It clearly isn't 2 metres tall, and It's even less likely to be 2 metres wide. But those are the stats given on the website, and since it's not ingame yet, that's all I can go off really. And, yeah. Exactly. If carrying vehicles in your starship is a widespread customer demand, in the real world they'd quickly change their design, or lose out to a competitor who would...
I 100% agree with your thoughts and conclusions of these two ships. I chose a Terrapin, but I also have a Freelancer DUR which satisfies the situations where I want to explore with the advantages of a cargo grid, and have more offense than a Terrapin provides.
That's a good question. I don't think that there's much of a comparison between the 315P and the Tracker because the tracker is faster, more maneuverable, has better armor and is better armed. Plus the 315p only has a better than average scanner and radar installed, but doesn't have a physical component like the scanning dish that the tracker has, which will actually enhance the abilities of its installed radar. The real comparison is going to be between the tracker and the Terrapin, since they both have comparable abilities with regards to scanning. Out of all the hornets my favorites are the Tracker and the SH. But it's going to be short range, and has no internal space or on board amenities. They may even remove its fuel scooping ability (which would be a huge blow to the operational capacity of this ship), and honestly if you're playing this ship's intended role correctly, fire power and speed shouldn't be a factor. So I feel that fire power and speed are far less important than sustainability and defense for a ship like this. Just my opinion though.
The slip among the field. Or even to a point where they can't see you on radars do to how small a ship is in open space and have to completely rely on visual contact to even find you.
I can't recommend the Terrapin; it's too slow to run from a fight and too lightly armed to win one. Eventually the armor is overcome and I was toast. Traded it for a Freelancer max. Space trucker for me.
LMAO! That ending was unexpected and the funniest thing I've seen in a long time. I cried. The first thing that came to mind as the ship kept getting tossed around was the movie Twister, but then another movie came to mind with a famous quote, "I'm a leaf in the wind, I'm a leaf in the wind, I'm a leaf in the wind." Which made it all the more funny to me. So thanks for adding that. Priceless.
At some point it would be nice for a way to place a beacon somewhere that for example has alot of minerals to mine. This way you could find your way back after selling off your finds...
I value empirical data recording capacity and the Terrapin has a bigger computer and sensor package for this type of work over the 300i. I have other exploration ships for my org mates to specialize in as we do coordinated exploration of a given region or space. You had an earlier videos from a year or two ago and despite some minor changes, my interpretation of the advantages of customization and specialization is still critical for getting better, faster results.
Ive been subbed a while, and always come back through and look at the VS for thoughts. Even after a rework, your view on prior models gives a perspective to think about when considering. All that being said,... I just got so happy you pronounced Niche properly lol,... so many people say it with a hard ch and it drives me batty haha
And when physicalised items will come to play with the possibility to store them in SCUs, the fact that 315p has storage will shine in a completely new light.
I LOVE my Terrapin! One of the ships I love to fly just because it has such a unique look and the MFDs right now are 1st class. Also has a lot of quantum fuel as does any exploration type ship. Can't wait to see what data collection will be like. Bought the 315P at Flight Week and LOVE that sunroof/starroof.
A factor now with FP mining. It is confermed that Terrapin can find hand minebel ores, 315P can not. And my reflection is that in the roll of scouting astroidsbelts, poseble landingzone's, the posbility of reveal if it is a valuble mining site or not is importent. Actually to a degree that I wonder if it is a error from CIG's side, that the 315P can not. (OMG, look at the lengt of that sentens!)
This video is quite specifically by 'high tier' pathfinders. Which is a bit weird, since pathfinders are low tier exploration ships... But yeah, the Mustang Beta is too low end to be relevant to this discussion.
Dude the quality of your videos, those beautiful scenic shots of the vessels and space, are top notch. Cudos! Edit: I also quite enjoy the in depth detail of the ships and the “as if they were real” mentality you take on the videos. And I don’t even play the game.
You can already kiss hover mode good by. The "helicopter physics" aspect of hover mode is being ripped out in 3.7 and replaced with an IFCS proximity assist mode.
The 315P would be able to fit a ranger on the cargo ramp, but since rangers are going to "stand up" when not in use, your going to have the same issues with transporting it that you'd have with transporting a Gey cat or a Gravlev bike.
I will get the P, but onnly as a stepping-Stone that's going to be upgraded to something more expensive, until I have the Terrrapin. ... It might be useless right now, but I'd love to use it for my Box- and Bunker missions. It's so pretty and tanky.
Wonder if the ground bikes will fit in the 315p? If so then it would make sense to carry those in a 315p over a gravlev bike or grey cat; especially since the type of exploration you would be doing in a Terrapin may be different from that in a 315p. Terrapin by it's looks is more short range industrial type exploration where you know where you are going and what you are going there for which like you say is data running. The 315p on the other hand is single player longer range discovery and retrieve type exploration. Anyways, I suspect the ground bikes will be preferred for ground exploration and in caves since (1) there'll be more room to store what you find on the cargo ramp (2) since ground bikes don't require the hover height of gravlev bikes, they may be more able to fit into tighter spots (3) most gravlev bikes also don't have storage capabilities of the ground bikes. Think only the dragonfly has storage and the dragonfly is huge by comparison to the Tumbril Ranger CV which is the exploration variant of the Tumbril ground bikes.
Great Vie doe. What I'd like to know is fi you'll be able to fit a Ranger bike and close the cargo bay... We'll see, but good video. I do love the 315p, though I think the sensors on the Terapin will out perform the 315p's scanners, I still prefer the Origin ship (especially at the price it is).
Why does the deployed armour increase the EM signature? If deployed and powered down, how is the deployed armour a liability? (Don't play, but considering getting in once the game is more developed.)
When the armor is closed it blocks EM and covers the radiators, so you need to have systems powered down because you can't radiate much heat. When open, the radiators can get shot like other ships and the ship is giving off much more EM. Think of it like a submarine running silent. If you get jumped in an asteroid field by a powered down and hidden ship with your shields down, you can survive long enough to power up. It's designed to explore in hostile areas, away from fighter support. If found it runs, and has the armor and shields to get out. It's ideal for working with an org to scan away from capital ships, looking for enemy forces and POI's.
If they fix the nicks of the 315p's ramp, the ship would make for a nice single person "vacation" craft that gives you enough amenities to have a very comfortable 3 days of off-grid camping and bike roaming, to then go back on station and refuel, get grocieries and have a full shower. I don't see it as something you'd use to make a profit, at least not something the 315 would be advertised for, while there's a lot more potential (narratively) for the Terrapin... The Terrapin I feel like it missed the memo on being a logistics craft, or being versatile enough that it could be repurposed for logistics so extensively: The armour should be modular, as in, multiple armour packages should be available so you can choose to wear heavy armour, or shed a few dozen tons when planning a much longer trek without direct confrontations to significantly extend your fuel range and require much less power if you mean to hover a lot in atmosphere. The amenities should be geared for a crew of 3, so it's possible to cycle one person driving, one sleeping and one resting/backup in 8-hour periods for fresher minds on the job, and the crew of 2 should be for packages where space is at a premium. And the ship should have a cargo configuration, it just doesn't sit right that it doesn't when sounds like it wants to be a Space Bradley.
Terrapins scanning chair needs to move to side and should be similar to Mako’s TV workstation. That would make room for cargo plates.
Hard to stay in the field for a long duration with no supplies!
Yeah that would be handy indeed.
Or with a directional scanning array. That would be awesome.
@@quuaaarrrk8056 315 are more agile - 1, 315 has 12scu of cargo bay - 2. 300i is most useless ship in a series.
A medical variant of the Terrapin would be interesting.
Extract a client, bring them to the 300, they get saved in luxury and we get paid
The highest armored Medical rescue! That'd be perfect.
I'd be into a medium cargo variant
How does the Terrapin not have cargo space? It's mostly just one big empty room.
Terrapin will most likely have data storage.
@@instantjizz There are already so many freight options in the game, as someone who is looking for a pure recon vehicle this looks awesome to me
I really do not understand what a minuscule cargo capacity would do for a specialized ship like the Terrapin. I mean you wouldn’t go grocery shopping in a Ferrari or would you?
I think you are the first one to explain to me just exactly what exploration ships are and can do. Thats really dope. Thats totally doing to be my playstyle.
Stealthy armored forward scout. I will be sorely disappointed if i don'[t see a Terrapin called Raphael, Donatello, or Leonardo :)
I'll keep the names in mind and ensure that your dream is made a reality on launch :) You forgot Michelangelo, though
Needs a green skin with red/puprle/blue/orange accents ;) Mine would be The Donaltello (my fav as a kid).
Raphael was the scout ;)
@@Phelixc Already named mine Donatello because he was the tech wizard.
I named mine Bowser
Wow! In depth review and comparison. Best I've seen so far. More like this please.
Great comparison!! Really enjoyed the amount of details, good job man!
Great analysis, especially the separated cargo's protection from shipjackers.
Don't fancy hot bunking?
Yeah it needs a re-think. A med variant with Docking hatch on top, medical bed, and forcefield behind the ramp would be cool for rescuing people.
@@mwnciboo I bet it will get a big re-think.
@@mwnciboo An air shield makes a ton of sense for the Terrapin.
This review style is very detailed and attractive enough for me to want to see more.. Great job..
Once armor is implemented, the Terrapin is going to be a sleeper ship, that armor is gunna be thiccc, boiiii
Wasn't the 300 series supposed to have a specialized hydrogen-scoop, something only origin had or simply a superior technology to other companies? ... point is that would give the 315p a distinct advantage over every other deep exploration vessel of it's class.
deep space refueling? sounds good.
Very, very well done and informative video. I'm absolutely going to share this with my org. Thank you!
Curious if the radar dish on the terrapin will let it fill a role similar to an AWACS to help fighters find and engage things they may have trouble finding on their own
Had the same thought.
Have you tried both terrapin and 315p?
Why so if you ccu it to a pin might as well get the flying bug that is the aquila
Great comparison video. I've always been a fan of anvil and I hope the super hornet gets the customization options the 300 series has enabled.
The 315p was my first ship.....and I hope they will flesh out the exploration.....see you in the verse in my red 315p

terrapin should really be super modular, while it seems to be good for certain specific things, the APC aspect is glaring. and if it was an APC and the chair moved or changed, i could imagine swapping out the scanner for a turret and being a proper drop ship for mid combat drops
Yeah but they're trying to make role specific drop ships
that reclaimer slided in and and stopped so smooth lol
that Reclaimer landing is amazing
If only the terrapin had some dedicated cargo space, i'd buy one right now
As a Mustang Beta owner I'm seriously considering swapping to it
For the price it should
yeah. Even if it only has like 1 or 2 SCU of space near the bed or something.
I wrote this comment before even watching the video, seems i was not the first to have this thought LOL
I expect that the Terrapin will excel at gathering data for other industry professions (ie: mining, fuel harvesting, flora for medication/drugs)
Both ships can do both, I suspect that they will have their strong suits.
Hard to put the terrapin in there due to its price being nearly 4 times as much as the rest. Good review none the less
Great video. I can't wait to enjoy it! I have both ships to go with explorer fleet.
I have to wonder if there will be a fix for small ground vehicles to be transported in the 315p, seems like it should a perfect fit, and would be something a luxury company would intentionally design to work together.
Nice vid. Loved the insane ending :)
I am now in love with the Terrapin.
I hope the developers find a way to make scanning complex and engaging. There's alot of possibilities to make scanning an interesting mechanic. I'm rooting for their ability to make this an awesome game overall, and make all branches meaningful and rewarding :)
When you say "find a spot and sell that information later" does the ship allow you to put pings/pins on the map? so you can return later?
It looks like your ship already maintains its sublight momentum when exiting QT
Hey, in game right now, you can put your ship at max cruise speed, then hit the decoupled option and cut the engines -> infinite travel in space, no more 'gas' needed. Well untill you run out of o2 and food...isn't that a real legit space sim ;)
Notice also that the 315p has stealth componants, your wishes have been fulfilled...fly with minimal 'noise' and safe buddy o7
Do a trip from lorville to Area 18 in a 350r and you'll probably be down to about 30-60% hydrogen fuel on arrival depending on how you fly and any detours you took (Especially in atmosphere)
Do the same in a 315p and you'll likely be in the 60-80% remaining fuel range, if not more.
(meaning the touring 'variant' still has explorer grade engines and scanners.)
So... it might not be dramatic, but explorers definitely do have extended endurance...
I like looking at these non combat oriented ships. I'm into the support roles. What other support ships are there to check out?
Love your comparisons, how do you get those nice 'hudless' shots of everything? I'd love to see some terrapin variants, specific S&R, or maybe a 'tank' with the upper turret swapped out.
It's easy, just press f4 and use the arrow keys to move the camera around
For me, I think I would use the 315p to do solo runs, because if I were to bring anyone else, I would use my Carack. I know that disqualifies me from the choices lol. Just say'n. Also great reviews Law, I enjoy watching your stat comparisons on the different ships. Great break down.
With the Terripin having a history being used as an APC(armoured personel carrier) can we expect a dropship variant or the ability to load it out with seating for troops
So if you have a carrack and a terrapin is it worth trading the terrapin for say a cargo hauler or larger ship?
lmao that ending. The invisible Shai-Hulud took your ship!
Will the 315p be able to fit a tumbrl ranger at least?
Probably not considering once the cargo lift is up, it only has enough space for one unit high. That's why you can only get one layer of cargo on it.
My same question. 1 SCU is 125 CM High. That is about 4 feet. So that's going to be pretty close. And might we be able to lay a ranger on its side?
In current stats the Ranger is 3.7x2x2 metres. So, probably not.
Though, there is a decent chance those stats are a bit weird.
More interestingly, an x1 is 5.5x1.3x1.5
If you can lay THAT on it's side then the clearance issue is a matter of 5 cm...
16 scu? (plus it's 30 metres longer...)
Yeah, they REALLY don't seem to want Origin ships carrying vehicles huh.
It's not obvious I meant clearance, just like in the last sentence.)
I'm talking about the extra clearance required in the cargo bay of the 315p
The bay can hold 1 SCU vertically, that's not in dispute.
And 1 SCU is, by definitions given in lore posts, a 125 cm cube.
That means the bay needs to be 25 cm taller than 1 SCU of cargo to fit a 1.5 metre tall vehicle inside.
150-125 = 25
Similarly, 130 - 125 = 5
Can you follow the logic of what I wrote now, or do I need to explain it further?
And yeah, the Ranger's stats of 3.7x2x2 seem all kinds of wrong. XD
It clearly isn't 2 metres tall, and It's even less likely to be 2 metres wide.
But those are the stats given on the website, and since it's not ingame yet, that's all I can go off really.
And, yeah. Exactly. If carrying vehicles in your starship is a widespread customer demand, in the real world they'd quickly change their design, or lose out to a competitor who would...
This was a solid review. Its hard to keep my attention, but... here I am, 40 min later.
I 100% agree with your thoughts and conclusions of these two ships. I chose a Terrapin, but I also have a Freelancer DUR which satisfies the situations where I want to explore with the advantages of a cargo grid, and have more offense than a Terrapin provides.
Where do you put the Hornet Tracker in comparison to 315p and Terrapin?
Just my opinion though.
could the 315p maybe use its tractor beam in combat to "hook" and loop around an enemy ship in combat at close range? That would be cool!
Considering its a light fighter craft it would struggle to do so with even a mustang
The slip among the field. Or even to a point where they can't see you on radars do to how small a ship is in open space and have to completely rely on visual contact to even find you.
Thanks for this detailed video! I feel much better about the 315p I bought... four years ago.
I like the Terrapin, bit like the big brother of the C8 Pisces and it is a cool ship, in my R list to buy at some point :)
Request, can you do video on crusader ships. Mainly mercury star runner and Hercules.
I wonder if the utility mount will be able to be replaced with a large energy weapon to make it literally a flying tank.
that could turn it into a great heavy infantry support
can you do a comparison video of the pisces variants and the terrapin?
I can't recommend the Terrapin; it's too slow to run from a fight and too lightly armed to win one. Eventually the armor is overcome and I was toast. Traded it for a Freelancer max. Space trucker for me.
As far as I know armor values are still not in game currently. Just hull hp and shield hp.
Do you think the CO Nomad would be viable or good for pathfinding? 🤔
Question about that underslung cargo bay; Do all 300 series ships get that?
they do, some of them are different sizes and can carry different amounts of cargo, but they all have one.
How about the cargo capacity of the 300i and the armour of the terrapin combined?
And when physicalised items will come to play with the possibility to store them in SCUs, the fact that 315p has storage will shine in a completely new light.
I LOVE my Terrapin! One of the ships I love to fly just because it has such a unique look and the MFDs right now are 1st class. Also has a lot of quantum fuel as does any exploration type ship. Can't wait to see what data collection will be like. Bought the 315P at Flight Week and LOVE that sunroof/starroof.
Excellent comparison for which I thank you. Keep it up 👍🏽
Really great video! Exactly the content i want to see bout the different ship tiers! Thanks alot:) And i must say: the winds rise strong on daymar! ;)
Why is the Mustang Beta not included in this video? Does it not fit the description of a pathfinder?
This video is quite specifically by 'high tier' pathfinders.
Which is a bit weird, since pathfinders are low tier exploration ships...
But yeah, the Mustang Beta is too low end to be relevant to this discussion.
Nice comparison in your excellent presentation style. Thanks good tube.
Dude the quality of your videos, those beautiful scenic shots of the vessels and space, are top notch. Cudos!
Edit: I also quite enjoy the in depth detail of the ships and the “as if they were real” mentality you take on the videos. And I don’t even play the game.
An excellent video again ! Thank you for your work !
Amazing video! thank you for the in-depth comparison!
...and the blooper-reel at the end is why I used ALL of my grav-lev vehicles as LTI tokens.
Or...this is the byproduct of Hover-Mode.
You can already kiss hover mode good by. The "helicopter physics" aspect of hover mode is being ripped out in 3.7 and replaced with an IFCS proximity assist mode.
Great video. BTW do you think the 315p could in theory transport the tumbril ranger ? It woud be perfect for exploration on the ground.
If you put the Greycat on the front lift and fill the rear lift with cargo, will the cargo hold the Greycat in place during QT?
QT automatically raises gear etc.. so I think it would just crunch it into the bottom of the 315p as soon as you triggered QT.
@@abram730 Thanks!! That makes sense!
That 315p is sexy AF. Surprising utility, and seems perfect for a personal ship and transport between locations.
i wish they'd flesh out exploration more, its what i do in elite throw on some music and jump to stars that no body has ever seen before.
Hard to flesh out exploration when there is no where to go..
