I just started refinishing furniture a couple months ago. I have been aching to do this very thing with some of my pieces, but I had no clue about decoupage at all until I watched your video. I feel like you just opened a whole new world for me. Thank you so much!
Just wanted to say your videos are so helpful - I am brand new to decoupage and you give so much information and detail in such a clear and easy to understand way - so thank you and I look forward to learning lots more from your videos ☺
Hello Patti, I am new to the art of decoupage. As I am in the midst of moving and am collecting things I will need for my decoupage after we are moved into our new place. I am going to do 4 small planters that I have had for a while and had planed on selling them in a house sale, I changed my mind when I saw a video on how to do this. Now I am going to add this to my collection. I am very excited about this new addition to my crafting. My first look into this medium was watching Sunday Morning a new show, on there was John Darien. That's what lit my fire, thanks again. I will be following you :)
Thank you for making...this tutorial...!!! After two days of...research...many videos watched...sore eyes and a headache...I finally found my answer...in your tutorial... I’m decorating wooden cigar boxes...for Christmas gifts this year...instead of my traditional...angel creations...only because I came into...five boxes full of wood...cigar boxes...and before researching...I went out and bought...beautiful fabrics to cover...and line them... When researching how to...decorate them (1st time)...most tutorials did paper decoupage... Long story short...your’s is the best tutorial...on covering wood boxes...!!! Would you happen to have...a tutorial on lining...the inside with satin...??? That’s what I purchased...for lining...the outside is cotton...thank you again...xxx
Allo Paty again, beautiful job, I like very much my dear friend, I am always delighted to see you do decoupage, like being so good to do like you, that the blessings of God fall upon you always, congratulations.a big hug
Good Morning Patti What a great piece of furniture* Love it all painted and decoupaged. The lace trim just makes it even more beautiful!! Enjoy this great day today(no humidity) deezie
djrepasky Thank you! And I sooo, know what you mean. I'm trying to do a lot of projects that I actually use. I hope you can use a lot of the projects I attempt to show you. :) Patti
Wow Patti, that is absolutely beautiful! Thank you for this video. You have just given me an awesome idea to do to my bedside cabinet drawer fascias (not sure what they are called lol). Thank you thank you thank you! Love Monika
Hello Ms. Patti! You must have read my mind! I'm planning on decoupaging our end table and coffee table with lighthouse fabric and anchor ribbon. Lol! Love this table! Off topic... I found "dishwasher safe" mod podge in my local Michael's. Have you tried this and if so how did it come out? I have been asked to make a four piece dinner service with clear plates that will include a paper image in the center (on the underside to show up in the center) and they'd like to be able to use them as their "every day" dishes; I might try to also decoupage glassware as well to match the service. Thank you for creating you beautiful decoupage Crafts. I look up to you as my "decoupage guru" and I truly enjoy your vids. I created a decoupage playlist. Lol! And again thanks for your input and inspiration! ~Shay
Chanelle StPierre Hi Shay!-it's funny how that works out sometime isn't it? Great minds do think alike. :) You know what? I have not yet tried the dishwasher safe Mod Podge. I'm guessing you have to bake it at a certain temp for a certain amount of time, or air "cure" it for almost a month. What you may want to do is to practice on a small glass, a jar or bottle first, and after following all of the instructions try washing it and see what happens. I don't know how long it lasts in the long run though. Have you looked for the product on Amazon? You can read the reviews there and ask questions of others who have tried it. I would like to hear your feedback once you do use it. I really should try it myself too. If you're on Facebook, I would love to see your end table, it sounds lovely! Upcycle with Decoupage is the name of my FB page if you want to post a picture or two. :) Patti
paobiologia Thank you! I hope you find that you can decorate your home (and spare some things you might have thrown out) with exactly your own tastes. have fun! Patti
OMGosh so beautiful Miss Patti!! I've actually gotten a big big collection of knitted and crocheted doilies and have been trying to think of how to use/display them. I've actually "wallpapered" with similar heirlooms before in an apartment by using straight starch to apply them to the walls. When I moved they were fine and I just sponged off the wall with water. Now you've got me thinking of doing that on a sliding closet door. Could you possibly video some decoupage project with doilies? Mua!
rubymimosa I have had a few requests to decoupage with Doily's so I will be doing it down the road at some point. I know I saw a blog post about a women who used that starch method but she applied lace over windows, it was beautiful! Then she removed them when she moved and just cleaned the glass. I'll have to do a little more practice with crocheted doilies. I think they'll take a while to dry huh? :) Patti
+patioelf. Ya done it again!! I love that idea!! Lace starched onto windows, I image it could work on a table or furniture if you put plexi over to not damage heirlooms. If you aren't that concerned about the doilies (or lace or fabric) I wonder if a topcoat of Triplethick wouldn't made a durable top for a table, dresser top, or nightstand! Thanks so much again!
Love the video and the outcome of the project but got lost as to how many layers of mod podge was put on. I know it would be tedious but I'd like to try this on a jewelry box. Keep up the great videos !!
I would like to do a patchwork of fabrics on 4 drawer fronts and 4 cupboard fronts on a staind wood surface. Is there anything i need to do or keep in mind. Do i need to sand first? should i not let fabrics overlap? TIA for your advice and sharing all your lovely pieces 🌹
Oh, I love this piece! I recently found a medium sized wooden apothecary cabinet and I found some cute fabric to cover it with. My 2 questions are: For the fabric overhang, can I use a sanding block to trim it? Also, have you used the new Mod Podge Ultra? I understand that it is superior to regular MP for a couple of reasons (no brush stroke lines and also as a good sealer), and I have the MP Ultra in gloss and matt finish. Thanks for any further info. This piece you completed is really nice!
Hello Pati. I'm a big fan of your work. I have a small question: Why did you add so many layers of glue before the final varnish? I think there were 6 layers..? Is it because it's fabric?
+Darker_Shade_Of_Pale Hello and thank you! I used that many coats of decoupage glue more because of the lace. So I coated the surface with the DG(decoupage glue) added the fabric, coated it with DG/ dry it- added another coat. I would normally have added the top coat or varnish at this point but b/c I was adding lace around the edges, I had to add DG to the area where I put the lace, then over top of the lace-and the rest of the surface to make it an even layer of DG everywhere. Once dry, I added more more final coat of DG to make it cohesive. Then the top coats (or Varnish) :) Hope this helps! :) Patti
Fun video! I noticed you had some threads of the lace that were off the edge. If you wanted to finish the corners to be smooth would you just sand them? If so, at what stage would you do that? Thanks!!
Hi Patti, thank you for share this work, I didn t underestestand after you paint with water, what s next? decoupage glue? and please, how long do I have to wait to put the decoupage glue? Thank , have a great day sweety
Susana Fabio I used the brush with decoupage glue on it, and dipped it in the water and covered the whole surface. You have to wait until the decoupage glue dries completely before you add the next coat-if you're putting it an oven it will dry a lot faster than leaving it to air dry but if you're working on a larger furniture piece-it will depend on humidity levels. If it was winter time, I would put this in the warmest driest room in my house and close the door. It could take a few hours depending on how humid it is where you dry it though. I hope I"m not confusing you. What I did was, applied decoupage glue over the table surface, and placed the fabric over top of it, pressing it into the decoupage glue. Once the whole surface was covered I took the brush, dipped it in decoupage glue , then water, then brushed over the whole surface, I wanted that fabric to sink down into the decoupage glue beneath it while adding another coat of decoupage glue (watered down) over the top of it. Dried it, then added the Lace, etc. I hope this helps! Patti
I'm curious to know how well that lace stuck. Does it seem like it's fully integrated into the finish? I'm thinking of covering a guitar amplifier with a Paisley fabric and these videos seemed to have peaked my interest.
How stain resistant is the surface? (if I use the 3 coats of varnish as you did)...Can I wash the surface? and is it resistant to scratching . I'm thinking of doing this on a little eating table and benches. Thank you.
Beautiful piece. IMHO, the top would have looked even more fabulous finished in resin (such as envirotex). With it going into a bathroom, it would have made it even more durable.
What is a chit brush? Never heard of it. I love the results. The table is beautiful. do you keep all your projects or do you sell them on? You could certainly open your own shop. I would buy this in a heartbeat
she's actually saying chip brush. They are the dirt cheapest of brushes, considered throw-aways, that you use in situations where smoothness isn't a concern, for example to apply primer coats, glues, solvents, stains etc.
I have a coffee table that I want to add pictures too however, can I use photo paper or do I need to use copy paper? I found many video's on how to transfer pictures but, I don't want to transfer I want to use real pictures and can't seem to find what I am looking for.
Thank you, your videos are very clear. Just one thing I wonder. The temperature you give, is it celcius or farenheight. Would make a difference. Sorry, i haven't worked that out. :)
yes but you do have to spray a base coat like this one over the surface first. If you don't use a basecoat the decoupage glue will easily pull away from the plastic once it dries. amzn.to/2egNagA
+Live, Love & Learn Naturally thank you! I always recommend a top coat to protect your work. When using chalk paint over a piece you can use a varnish or top coat over the area where you decoupage, and use wax over the rest of the piece but you would need to add that wax again before a years time is up. But the top coat protects the paint from UV light (fading) and just general fading, chipping and humidity. :) Patti
No, I don't always use acrylics, you're right. I used the two part resin in this project (i'll supply the link for you) but some people feel intimidated by using that. This table isn't being used as much as it's a decorative piece. I love the 2 part resin if I'm working on a surface that will get a lot of activity. :) ua-cam.com/video/lxLHZjbPJ2s/v-deo.html Patti
Ya because we all have room to put furniture in the oven. Lol I did a hiboy dresser and 2 night stands without the Oven lol and came out beautiful. Put fabric with modpoge and chalk paint. Still beautiful 5 years later. So oven is ridiculous.
Hello..yes-the fabric is very absorbent so you will need that much glue. It does take a bit longer to dry but it's so worth it. There are so many pretty fabrics available- I hope you give it a try! Patti
How did you get the surface so smooth and glossy. Is it the glue or did you have to sand it down and reapply the glue and is the lace area smooth and glossy as well?
+Precious Jarrells Hi Precious. The shine is all in the top coat or varnish which is the very last thing you'll do to your project. I used a high gloss polycrylic top coat -I did not sand prior to using it. The fabric was already made smooth by the Mod Podge and the lace was also. The lace is still raised a bit, but there's no chance of it pulling or snagging, it's also protected from staining by the top coat or varnish. i hope this helps Precious. Patti
My husband has built our grand daughter a toy box, we want it to be something she can enjoy past her child hood so we have painted it in a pastel teal color and want to decoupage the entire box in a white or cream lace, and then adding twine to the front to make her name. Any tips?
+Stephanie Watkins that is a really nice idea Stephanie. I would love to see it when you're done. If you're on Facebook you can post the picture to my page Upcycle with Decoupage. I would just suggest that you use a pencil to lightly sketch the outline of her name first-then add the string over the outline. Otherwise it sounds like you have a very good idea of what you want to do..Good luck-I'm sure she's going to love it. Patti
Hi Joseph, if you don't want to do any additional work over the surface, you would want to use a 2 part resin as the top coat. It coats like glass, it's very thick and it would make for a very smooth flat finish. :) Patti
+Marieta Szymura Les mains, LLC Hi Marieta, that is a good question. No, there are solvents and other materials mixed into the water based varnishes and top coats. When you apply the top-coat, the water and some of the solvents evaporate leaving behind the ingredients that cure (or harden) to protect your surface. Depending on your project-you may want to add more than one coat of the varnish (or top coat) if it's going to be used often. Patti

I love it !Beautiful !!!

What would you say your water to mod Podge ratio is when you’re adding water to it?

Hi Patti, thank you for share this work, I didn t underestestand after you paint with water, what s next? decoupage glue? and please, how long do I have to wait to put the decoupage glue? Thank , have a great day sweety
Susana Fabio I used the brush with decoupage glue on it, and dipped it in the water and covered the whole surface. You have to wait until the decoupage glue dries completely before you add the next coat-if you're putting it an oven it will dry a lot faster than leaving it to air dry but if you're working on a larger furniture piece-it will depend on humidity levels. Dried it, then added the Lace, etc. I hope this helps!

what if my furniture is already painted do all the same steps apply
Can you decoupage with scrap booking paper with a card stock like texture?
Can Decoupage be done on plastic bins.
yes but you do have to spray a base coat like this one over the surface first. If you don't use a basecoat the decoupage glue will easily pull away from the plastic once it dries. amzn.to/2egNagA
This is such a fab piece 😁 and was wondering would I need the tip coat if I was doing this on draw fronts? 💜 xx
Patti
patioelf what kind of spray glue did u use pls
Do you always need to use acrylics? There is a kind of pour-able resin that might make a good water proof top for something like this. Thoughts?
No, I don't always use acrylics, you're right. I used the two part resin in this project (i'll supply the link for you) but some people feel intimidated by using that. This table isn't being used as much as it's a decorative piece. I love the 2 part resin if I'm working on a surface that will get a lot of activity. :) ua-cam.com/video/lxLHZjbPJ2s/v-deo.html

Thanks Patti. I'll definitely post pictures
😊 I would love to see them. :)

Dear PATTY
How can i get a flat surface on the face of a drawer after decoupaging a flower in lace in centre?
Hi Joseph, if you don't want to do any additional work over the surface, you would want to use a 2 part resin as the top coat. It coats like glass, it's very thick and it would make for a very smooth flat finish. :)
Patti
how many polyurethane applications you did on this one?
loved it
+annabelle lopez 😃
is the whole project polycryliced or just the top?
Melinda Lemmon the whole piece. :)
since it is water based, doesn't it come off when is washed with water?
+Marieta Szymura Les mains, LLC Hi Marieta, that is a good question. No, there are solvents and other materials mixed into the water based varnishes and top coats. When you apply the top-coat, the water and some of the solvents evaporate leaving behind the ingredients that cure (or harden) to protect your surface. Depending on your project-you may want to add more than one coat of the varnish (or top coat) if it's going to be used often.
Patti
gorgeous
thank you Dee...
