  • Chronic stress and anxiety has reached epidemic levels in the modern world. In this video, I discuss how you can take advantage of your own nervous system to beat stress through a technique called "enhancing vagal tone."

    Great video! A lot of good info here. When the parasympathetic nervous system is activated I would definitely characterize the way I feel as warm, secure, relaxed etc and I can see that the veins in my hand are dilated. Whereas when the sympathetic nervous system is activated I can see the veins are much more constricted. I feel like I have been stuck in an almost constant flight or fight response for 6 months or so and the hyper-stimulation has me exhausted. The worst of my symptoms is that my neck muscles become very tense and then I feel like my neck is always turning involuntarily. I suppose it could be a number of things: low levels of neurotransmitters, cervical dystonia, chronic hyper ventilation, but I really think it is a build up of stress that manifests as physical symptoms, like a conversion disorder. Anyway, thanks for making this video and I need to start doing some of things.

    The mother of "all" disease: stress. I am a living proof that vagal tone stimulation works. I'm constantly stressed, even when alone. And even though I know cold showers and meditation, yoga, deep breathing etc is very good for me I wake up stressed and often resist doing these very healthy things for myself. But when I DO do these things I feel so much better afterwards. I think I, am many others with me, are somehow addicted to stress. Maybe the Vagal Tone Stimulator may be the perfect thing for us lazy but still stressed people who refuse to do whats good for us. But maybe even putting on a device will be resisted because we fear the change in state it will lead to. This is why it's (probably) a good idea to wake up abruptly and know exactly what to do (cold shower +++), not lie in bed and feel the good feelings of the warm duvet before deciding whether to take a cold shower or not.

      Wow! This is just the video I have been looking for. After reading a book suggesting taking a morning shower and finishing off with a cool blast for about 30 seconds or more, I’ve been searching for how this can make such a difference. I was so surprised at the difference this small change made. I’ve been experiencing depression after the loss of my spouse 2 years ago. It was like a six week nightmare before he passed, and I got very little sleep or rest during that time. Anyway, after that first shower, my mind was so much clearer and I had energy and creativity that had totally disappeared for two years.
      That first day was by far the most profound difference, and it lasted over 2 hours. I documented it in my journal to be able to remind /encourage myself later. But this is making a definite difference. Next I’m going to try the TENS stimulation with an ear clip according to some instructions from studies.
      Thanks so much for this video. I’m glad to have found you- even if this video is now 3 years old. Wish I had known about this long ago.

    Stress and spinal injury caused me serious problems. My neck and musculoskeletal system was trashed. You can actually see the fatty infiltration into the muscles. This caused significant neck dysfunction and instability and stressed the nerves to a point I was in severe pain for years. Vagus nerve appears to be a significant contributor to all kinds off issues.. it’s takes many months to fix it all. Great video 👍🏻

    The cold showers force you to breathe deeply, so I can see how they could stimulate the vagus nerve. However, my understanding is that cold showers have also been demonstrated to elevate cortisol levels, indicating they are a stressor. Is there a tipping point, such that if the exposure to cold is of the right duration and intensity, the beneficial effect on the vagus nerver predominates, and beyond that point, the cortisol spike and the physiological effects that follow it predominate?

    • @Ttack
      @Ttack 4 роки тому

      wboquist cold showers are good no water what, trust

    • @lovesouldeep
      @lovesouldeep 3 роки тому +7

      The purpose of the cold is in part to increase cortisol. Then when the stressor is removed, the breathing technique continues, so parasympathetic nervous system is in control, and increase in oxygen alkalises the body, cabal nerve is toned, the cortisol very quickly dissipates. The body over time improves its ability to eliminate cortisol in everyday situations. Wim Hof says that we humans do not experience the extreme stress we would have encountered when we didn’t have technology doing everything for us, so the slightest thing gets our sympathetic nervous system taking over. Many people live in a very stressed state, don’t know why, do not have any tools to deal with it. Creating the spike in cortisol and breathing through it will result in your nervous system shrugging it’s metaphorical shoulders in times of everyday stress.
      It’s something like that.

    Love your videos as always.. sorry to ask this online but im scared what to do at this point, I was wondering if you can think of something that can help me, I've had this ear infection for around 4 months that disappeared then came back multiple times so maybe it's related? My necks felt painful like i had a light flu for 3 months but my doc said itll probably go away so I never worried. 3 days ago I took some potatoes and pork my friend seasoned with some light alchohol and we all started to eat, within a minute i lost feeling in my face and body what felt like a stroke, and my hands locked up and wrist bending with crunching pain, my eyes also moved rapidly and i felt like i was gonna die, my body kept jerking really weirdly and i threw up like 7 times, I went in an ambulance and my body started to relax and the symptoms started to disapear, they asked me questions i answered, it started happening again in the ER, they got it to calm down by telling me to relax cus i was breathing heavy, i told them about how i had some alchohol but like a scarse amount and they said its probably a liver issue, they then checked my liver and all my organs chest xray then said everythings fine its probably just anxiety. So they sent me home and now my head feels heavy and i can barely move my neck, i feel tingling in the back left of my head and i havnt ate for 24 hours since i keep throwing it up, hurts kinda in the solar plex, only thing i can keep down is pedia lite. The earliest i could get an appointment with mt doc is next tuesday but it feels like its getting worse fast, my speech also seems like slightly delayed idk why..sorry for the read
