Hi! I've had several question about cure time, so I thought I'd pin a comment here. With normal cold process soap (assuming it was made correctly), saponification is usually complete within 24 to 48 hours. After saponification, the time it takes for the soap to cure will depend on the oils used and water amounts - cure time means the time it takes for the water to evaporate and the bar to harden. With this modified cold process technique and starting with high temperatures, saponification was complete as soon as the soap cooled (the next day). However, I used a lot of water (in hopes it would help with fluidity), so when I unmolded the bars, they were still a bit sticky. I let them sit a week before the lather test just to dry out a bit. Out of curiosity, I actually did test the pH the day I unmolded them - my strip showed a good pH of between 8 and 9. It doesn't hurt anything to let the bars dry out longer, though. The lather may even improve as more water evaporates. Hope this helps! 😊❤️

I don't think the lather will change by curing the bars. But it helps with storage.

Just made some of your recipe yesterday. Progressed exactly as shown in your video. However, I used a metal cylinder mold and helped to ensure complete saponification by placing it in a 180 F preheated oven (with the upper rack removed). Kept it in there for 2-1/2 hours. Unmolded late last night. This morning I cut into about 7/8" thick pucks. Had one small 1/4" sliver left over and tried it out shaving this morning... BAM! Spot on recipe! Great job Holly! I put the recipe into my recipe files stored at the Soapmaking Friend website which has IMHO the easiest to use soap calculator out there. I may do some tweaks like adding some Kaolin clay. Again... thanks for a great method. BTW, I've been making soap since 2002. Became really good at making liquid gels for showers and hand washing.

I finally got around to making a shaving soap for my Dad. Parts of the video are probably long and tedious, but I wanted to show the entire process so you'll know more of how the soap might look as you go. Have you made a dual-lye shaving soap? I'd love to know if you've tried the modified cold process or the hot process and how it went. :) -Holly

The fact that you showed all the parts even the tedious parts was very helpful. As somebody who has not made soap before there are things I want to see somebody else go through so I know what to go through, even if I only need to see it once. Thanks for the great video!

Hope you answer my question on stearic acid .. you said that you added to oils but you didn't show how its added to oils or melted .. (Can you make a video on stearic acid? ) .. plus does affect the measurement of NaOH and KOH ? I understand that stearic acid does reduce the impact of NaOH and KOH so you have to add more of that to compensate .. right?

Holly, I know this video is 2 years old. I used your method and recipe and made these shaving bars yesterday. I put the soap in a pipe mould. Great recipe, quick and easy to follow and make. Today I unmoulded. Quite sticky, but able to cut into rounds. I wondered if I could mould them with my hand shampoo press. I re-cut the rounds, (to fit the mould) weighed them out and with lots of baking soda on all parts of the mould, was able to press them, without them sticking to the mould. They came out perfect. Now sitting on the drying rack - a wonderful sight! As always, a wonderful tutorial. Thank you!

Holly, thank you for posting this. I've recently gotten into cold process soap making, and I've been wanting to learn more about shave soaps. I have sensitive skin, and I live in an extremely remote place where it is difficult to get typically aerosolized or pressurized canisters shipped to me. Being able to make my own soap could help with both of those problems, especially now that I have all of my soap making equipment in hand. Have a great day!

Thanks for the great video! This my first shaving soap and I am really excited about it. I will be unmolding tomorrow. I did not add as much of the essential oils, as I was concerned that it would be too much for something that would be concentrated on face area. I notice that the Stearic acid did have a strong odor. I know it is the steStearic acid since this is a new item that I have not worked with. Do you know if this is common? I know I will be adding more fragrance for the next batch.

Holly - Kapia Mera Soap You more then welcome 😘😘 The first time I made the hot process shaving soap it looked very rustic and it wasn't easy for me to flatten the top nicely. (of course it was also the nerves that count, because it was also the very first time I made a HP Soap ever lol. You can watch the first ones I made, at my IG almost at the bottom) If I make them now, I pre-heat the cups, that helps me that the soap does not cool down too fast because of the cold cup I pour the soap in. Yes, Amanda still offers the class in her store 😊😊 I hope you will share the HP version as well with us 💕💕

After three weeks, the bars feel about the same. They won’t ever be super hard like a regular cold process bar due to the high percentage of KOH I used. You could let them dry longer if you like though. 😊

It really depends on how much water is used. Assuming the soap was made correctly, saponification is complete within 24 to 48 hours (give or take a day) with normal cold process soap. This modified cold process soap was fine to use the next day (after it cooled)...it’s kind of like a fast hot process, basically. I used a lot of water in this recipe, so I let it sit for a week before trying a lather test..just to let it dry out. Thanks for asking! :)

Great video. Does anyone know the environmental impact of the ingredients and are they all naturally derived chemicals?

    good morning,
I'm Alessandro, I don't speak English, can I ask you for the written recipe for this soap? I do the translation. with speech it is difficult. Thank you so much.
    Yours sincerely
    Alessandro from Italy

Lisa O on that amount of fat I have to discount the hydroxides of 6%?

Ale Def - No, just follow the recipe exactly as written. She’s just listing what the super fat percentage is. Have you made soap before bc it’s a pretty standard term?

Lisa O 68g of total hydroxides. quite right?

Ale Def - oh, I see she didn’t specifically list that. I don’t know, use the lye calculator she suggested and divide the amount 40/60 between the two different types.

Don't we need curing period for this like 4 weeks like other cold processed soaps
