I make dual lye shave soap. Im excited to see this video!!
Tip #1 - add NAOH first. Then add KOH slowly. KOH sounds like a volcano.
Tip #2 - wear a mask when measuring KOH. The powder will beat up your lungs.
I cook my dual lye soap in crock pots.

shave soaps will look rustic...its the high amount of stearic that makes it look that way.....IF after you put the soap in a shave bowl/cup and wait a few hours for it to firm up on the top, you can take a spoon and use the back of the spoon to smooth it out...

So for those of us who are somewhat mathematics challenged, and possess only a short memory,
-40%sodium hydroxide, and -60%potassium hydroxide correct?

  • @POCK81014
    @POCK81014 3 роки тому +11

    A couple points to note....
When using the fragrance oils....its best to use no more than 3% (oil weight) (make sure you look at the IFRA data) lower then 3% and the fragrance will be very light.
Keep you lye water and your oils within 10-15 degrees of each other....your oils will work best at 160-170 degrees....when the lye gets too cool and you add it to the hotter oils, it has a faster chance of "curdling" (kind of like seizing up)
You can use Aloe Vera Juice in place of the water at the same amount....30-35% aloe water is ideal.
Some KOH lye (potassium hydroxide) is less than 90% purity. If your KOH isnt 90% it will affect the outcome of your soap.
Clays....doesn't matter if if its kaolin or bentonite or french....dont use it! Clays dull a shave razor and also makes the razor build up under the blades faster..especially with multi-blade disposal razors.
Key oils and fats to use are those that have a high stearic SAP value. Key fats to use are tallow, lard, shea, mango butter, cocoa butter, and palm. The higher the stearic value the better the lather.
Superfat...be careful with this....dont go to high on the SF (at most 5% is best) the higher you go, the softer the soap is. You WANT a semi firm soap...not as hard as a bar soap, but you dont want a soft soap that you can push your finger into easily....the softer it is, the less lather it is.
Shave mugs/bowls.....these are designed to fit a shave puck...there are many commercial makers that make these pucks...porasso, williams, clubman, and others. Those pucks are anywhere from 3/4 to 1 inch thick. They are made to set down inside the shave bowl/cup so that the brush has room to build the lather....if you are going to prefill a shave bowl....fill it up half way....3-4 oz is pretty close to half way mark on most shave bowls.
I also developed and formulated a shave soap ( I actually have two types...one is vegan and the other is animal fat based) The pucks I make are made in a PVC pipe and I also prefill shave cups too.
A few fragrance oils to consider...Depending on who you buy from
    For the masculine side
    Mahogany Teakwood....manly, musky, bold
    Black Sea...Fresh and light
Shave and a haircut...old fashioned barbershop smell
Sandalwood....earthy and bold but not over powered
    Bergamot Waters....fresh and light
    Noir....this is a BBW fragrance....(top notes..{Coriander, rosemary, sage, bergamot}....middle...{Lavender, cardamom, orange flower} bottom..{Musk, vanilla, amber, woods, vetiver})
    Enjoy!...Happy Soaping and Shaving!

You add up all the oils for a total volume, then can add up to 10% glycerin on that number.

Hey Ellen! I made this yesterday and it turned out great! I went by your recipe without really running it through a calculator since you had the steps laid out but I wanted to print it out on a soap calculator this morning... So, I have a question...when I went on Soapee to use their dual lye calculator it is saying 5.07oz of KOH? How did you get 4.6oz of KOH? I double checked and I have all my ingredients in there correctly and don't see how you got that amount. Could you please tell me if I did something wrong? The NaOH amount on Soapee goes with what you said at 2.18oz so I don't know.... Thank you!

Hi, I’ve never made soap of any description before, but I’m keen to make my own shave soap. I have a few questions that maybe you or your viewers could provide input on.
    1. Is is possible to make up the soap without scent and melt it at a later date to add scent?
    2. If I were to use tallow, would I just replace some or all of the fat?
    3. If I wanted to add menthol crystals, at what point in the process would be best for this?
    Thanks!

I made this dual lye shaving soap today. No problem with volcanoing but it never did come to the glossy stage. It just kept getting thicker until it was a pile of soap crumbs which I wadded into a ball and crammed it into the little containers. I guess I stirred it to long but I never did see glossy.
