How to make dual lye shave soaps | Best lather EVER | Day 56/365 | Hot process shave soaps

  • We're hauling out the crock pot for some hot process action today! Normally I don't do hot process; cold process is much more satisfying. Do you know what any of those words mean? That's ok! I'm going to talk all about them in the video. As I do. Nonstop. Without pause.
    This is a new shave soap batch that differs from the last shave bar we did; lots of stearic acid in this guy. Stearic acid is great for shave soaps as it creates a big giant lather that stands up and gives you a great guide to do the shaving thing.
    Big things with this recipe - lots of water in it, as well as an additional liquid stage at the end. This is to keep the batch kinda fluid throughout so it is pourable. Which is...whatever. I don't find hot process soaps to ever be pourable. But the extra water helps!
    If you're interested in the shave bars, you can find them on the website!

    Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
    Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
    Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

    I made this for the first time and I believe I over blended and left it on too long. The bars ended up so ugly 😂 but as soon as I touched the bar it bubbled up crazy! This is one of the best recipes. I can’t wait to try the next one

    Since you don't seem to care so much for Hot Process, is it safe to say you haven't found a good way to make a shave cream using Cold Process? Love your videos! I'm just starting with CP and plan to only use clays and EO's to keep it more natural, so your videos help me immensely!!

    I know this is an older video but I'm seeing you don't use glycerin. All the recipes I've seen use it. Do you find it's just as good without? Your lather was great 👍

      Well, from my experience with Mrs. S&Cs recipe, it's fantastic. Adding glycerin isn't always necessary because saponification causes glycerin to form as well as the fatty acid salts that make soap.

    Use a hand mixer for baking to incorporate everything. That's what I do once HP cooks. It's so much easier.

    Do you add your all 10% of superfats after saponification. I guess what I’m saying is did you calculate 0% superfat for the amount of lye and then put it back after it cooked or added 10% to your soap calc. I so want to make a duel lye. I never done that before. I love hot process though. I have to figure NaOH and KOH ratios though and the difference in adjusting those two would make. 😕Thank you so much. New Subscriber

      Hi! I calculate my recipe for 10% superfat from the beginning to ensure that I’m not using more lye than needed. :) Dual lye soaps are a ton of fun!

  • @visionofawallflower

    I’m sorry if this is a really dumb question, I’m a very new soaper 😅 my question is… since this is hot process, does that mean you can creat this without fragrance or color and use it as a melt and pour base after it has cured? Thanks for any info!

    • @MrsSoapAndClay
      @MrsSoapAndClay  Рік тому +1

      No such thing as dumb questions. So if you wanted to turn this into a melt and pour base, you would add your solvents after the batter hit emulsion, and let the soap and solvents do their thing. The easiest solvent is glycerin, so you can add 50% of the batch weight in glycerin, let them combine, and now you have melt and pour soap. It’s slightly more complicated if you want to do clear melt and pour. If you’re interested, there’s a playlist on the channel about creating melt and pour bases and what the solvents do. Have fun!

    How do you run a recipe like this through a soap calc? Is it 50/50 for the KOH and NaOH?

    • @MrsSoapAndClay
      @MrsSoapAndClay  3 роки тому +7

      So I guess it’s technically running three calcs - one with full oil amount to get the water, and one with half the oils and KoH, and a final with half the oils and NaOH. So in a long and unnecessarily winding response, yes you’re right. 😂

      Hey! So there is no set time for cure - it has more to do with the recipe than anything else. These particular guys actually lost a ton of weight for 8 weeks before they stopped, and the lather was exceptional at that point.
