  • Hey Scrappers! In today's video I'm going to be showing you some examples of the new Lumix GH6's dynamic range boost mode!
What this mode does is it adds some extra stops of dynamic range in the highlights of your video. It does nothing to increase the dynamic range on the low end, only the high end.
This mode will 100% be turned on if I'm ever shooting outside. In these comparisons, you'll see the exact same shots that were recorded in 5.7k ProRes HQ But one has dynamic range boost on and the other has it off. You'll see side by side comparisons on what kind of dynamic range you can get on the GH6.

The difference in highlight rolloff, where all the added DR is, is what's key. There is really no reason that I can see to not shoot with this on all the time. Smooth roll off in the highlights makes the footage look a lot closer to film than it does video. Awesome comparison man!

I think he clipped the highlights with the V-Log to 709 conversion, I discovered LUTCalc for V-Log/V-Gamut to 2100 HLG / 2020 and haven't seen any blown highlights, though I did notice adding +3 stops in the conversion aligns the shadows and mids in the curves, so 250 to 500, 1000, 2000 makes sense in a way. I think DRB is good if you have to shoot at 2000 or above anyways

there is definitely more noise when dynamic range boost is turned on, you can see it in the attached image, and I have noticed it many times myself, so I prefer a noise-free image rather than a dirty one with some unimportant detail. Regards.

FWIW, per intercepter121, you don't have to over expose +2 for V-log on the GH6. In camera metering is correct.

I suppose difference not too big, but noise at 2000 ISO significantly higher than at 100...200

Too much way too fast for me bud. I need time to see and settle while being told what I'm looking at along the way. Your presentation looked modern, and that's probably where my issues begin. I have a much slower eye, I cannot move this fast while maintaining focus. With that said, it still looks really good when I hit the pause button. A GH6 ya say... I would not have gone there, but I'm glad that you did. Cheers man 🍻

Thanks for the insight. I plan on describing what is happening in the videos in the future for sure. Pausing definitely is the way to go on this comparison video since each clip is only about 12 seconds long. Essentially when dynamic range boost is on, your camera can see a couple more stops of the highlights instead of them blowing out and losing information. And yep. A new GH6. It's a wonderful camera!

      @@ScrapyardFilms:
I own a G9 and love it. But I'm waiting on 8k @ 30 minimum. Others are doing it, and cell phones with their joke cameras are doing it. By the time I stop long enough to focus in on a thing, the next new thing is already a rumor. Keeping up is taxing, so I much prefer the long and drawn out slow and methodical show and tell. Just sayin.
      Cheers man 🍻

@@Finite-Tuning Totally understandable. The G9 is a great camera for sure. I upgraded from a. G7 to a GH5S, and now a GH6. With an external recorder, like an AtomOS, you can already record in 8k if your camera supports HDMI external recording! When I use my ninja with my GH5S, I can record in 12-bit raw. Once the new GH6 firmware update comes out, it will allow for HDMI recording as well

honestly, i dont' see much difference except the car shots. seems you could just add a bit of contrast and vibrancy in post and do the same as DR boost. thanks for test. not impressed with DR B.

Yeah and a few shots that's a little bit hard to see the difference. But at the end of the comparisons, I put up the waveform monitor that shows the different highlights and where they're cut off at. Again, and some shots it's not noticeable but in others, you will see that there is no information in the parts that are too bright. So when you see them cut off and the waveform monitors, adding contrast and vibrance wouldn't bring back the information like you're thinking. But regardless, it's ultimately up to the eye of the person watching or the person holding the camera whether it's a feature that's worth it or not. Personally, I think it's worth it but only in daylight shots. In darker shots, you would notice a single difference because dynamic range boost doesn't affect the low shadows
