I have one of the custom buttons on the front side of the camera routed to DR Boost. I leave it on most of the time, but I can switch it off pretty easily with a flick of the finger.
@@RhettThompsonFilm Yup, so all the main frame rates I use are routed to the custom buttons on the dial, and i have DR Boost as well as picture profiles routed to the two buttons by the lens in the front. That’s been the easiest way for me to get in and out of it.
That’s a very complicated question to answer. At 100% depends on the situation, but I have a newer video all about ISO on this camera that I would check out if I were you!
I wish there was an extended ISO setting on the GH6. Would allow for using ISO1000 in DR boost by overexposing 1 stop. Right now I'm using my own overexposure Lut (+1 stop) for previewing in this case, but that is quite a hassle. Apart from that, the GH6 produces some fantastic looking V-Log ProRes footage. I created my own Custom profile for 120p with DR Boost off. One switch on the dial. And going back to regular film mode activates ProRes and DR Boost again.
I do not own a GH6 I have a GH5S so I’m sorry if it doesn’t fix your problem, but wouldn’t the suggestion of custom settings on the dial will be the quickest fix to your dilemma?
I have the GH6 and I am confused with the DR boost. It is odd that the praised feature seems to do very little of nothing to image quality. DR boost combines low iso and high iso image and makes some kind of "HDR" result. When using normal profiles like cineD2 the difference is very small. It does nothing to highlights and makes shadows just very little cleaner. I understand that "normal" profiles uses rec709 color and luminance space and therefore the camera is not allowed to make too "wide range" image but it would be nice to have at least some visual benefit. Using vlog or HLG the benefit is visible but the iso2000 noise cancels the joy. I would call the DR boost better the low light NR boost. There is almost no benefit of using DR boost ON iso2000 vs DR boost OFF iso250. I think the exposure should also be almost the same because the sensor clips the higlights at the same light volume anyway. It is confusing to think whether I should shoot cineD2 iso800 with DR boost ON or iso100 without the DR boost. Iso100 is cleaner but iso800 DR boost is also very good but a little noisier. GH6 iso800 DR boost is still much better than my GH5 iso800 which is quite noisy. Then there is photo side. Photo mode uses DR boost automatically starting iso800. I have compared iso640 and iso800 (normal profiles) and there is very little or no difference. Again the benefit shows maybe in RAW My mind says that the difference must be bigger when combining low and hig iso image.
Yeah the biggest differences are 100% noticeable in VLOG and not as much in others. I havent tested HLG but in natural and cineD the difference is very small. I also should say I also thought DR BOOST was noiser but honestly in VLOG 250 and 2000 look identical. More testing is needed with no VLOG.
I added DR Boost to one of my Fn buttons. Beats hunting through the menus. Thanks
