I have a 2015 sorento, few weeks ago after a snow storm I put it on the side of the road to do the driveway. It ended up sliding into the ditch and after rocking back and forth a few times, I pushed the so called “center differential lock”. There was a noticeable difference in the drivetrain and I was able to crawl through the snow and out of the ditch, very similar to trucks in 4x4 I’ve driven in the past. Not saying they are mechanically the same but it sure does a good job of locking up that center differential to the best of its ability. Great video btw 👍
Totally, but that goes for most types of cars and their respective uses. People just like knowing they have the features should those rare situation arise.
16:50 After watching this video, I tried some things with my new Sportage (177hp petrol, d-clutch auto) and yes, I have the same problem. But there are tow ways to make up for it (at least for me). 1. simply switch into manual and shift down. That's good for a quick remedy. 2. switch into sport and then it should be much better. I drove to a LARP this weekend on very small roads in he hills somewhere in Germany. It was dark and I chose to let rare oncoming traffic pass by driving down the slopes to the side. Hitting the sport mode button made coming back up those much easier getting out of the mud and gravel. I hope that helps... at least the Sportage drivers :) BTW: I had no problem driving slowly through muddy passages in the forest with this car. Thanks for all the videos and love from Germany :)
Bet you didnt anticipate this heatwave we're going through now! 80 degrees F seems chilly compared to the 105-110 F that we'll be seeing for the next few days. I'm headed to the coast to get the heck outta here! Great review as always.
I know, I was laughing when proofing that part. Still, that was warm - at the time. Lol. I’m actually in Texas for a couple weeks. Been “enjoying” 100° for a few days already. (Ugh.)
Hey! Love your vids and love that you are local. I’m new to the area and looking for a road that I can drive on like that one with my crosstrek. Where is this at? Any sweet legal roads that would be good for my Subaru that you suggest? I’m always Leary of going on roads that are out there. Thanks!
Thanks for pointing out the center differential thing. Most reviewers seem to gloss over that. I do find it strange the American Sorentos are so different
Usually all other cars are better in USA but it seems KIA gives better features for Sorento in all other countries. Maybe because you have Telluride there and they want to keep some distance from it
“Overall it’s giving me a weird balance…” exactly what I thought when I drove it. It’s inconsistent. The DCT doesn’t perform the same way every time, the 2.5T is peaky and surgey in its power delivery (a Mazda 2.5T this is not, not even close), they combine to make a weird driving experience. I know the “but they’ve come such a long way!!!” people are going to come for me but for as much as this thing costs it needs serious drivetrain revision in this configuration.
If the traction control is off for the quicker pothole part of the road, then it won't cut the power to prevent wheel spin, but it's needed on the slow hill climb. Snow mode might have helped (too bad they don't offer the mud or sand mode in the US). Modified 2022 AWD Sorento PHEV's with AT tires took 2nd & 3rd place out of 10 in the X-Cross class, 1500 mile, 8 day, 2021 Rebelle Rally. So this car is very capable.
Looks awesome, but for any regular off-road use, and possibly even as a daily driver, it really seems like a new Outback Wilderness Edition would be superior
From what I learned from the SUV battle channel here on UA-cam such crossovers better deal with diagonal suspensions like this if the front wheels are straight and engine revs are kept steady in the maximum torque range. This allows the traction control system to detect the slipping and engage to pull the car out by re-distributing the torque between the wheels. Certainly TCSs of different cars work differently but the overall approach seems to be the same.
Kia’s are great cars, I have a 2017 Sorento and the new ones are a completely different animal. However, Kia makes nice luxury-ish cars, but some of the materials are pretty cheaply made. The hard plastics, and rubber pieces do degrade over time and tend to fall apart. Just something to keep in mind the longer you own a Kia, the more the little “luxuries” tend to break down. Engine runs great and I’m at 119k miles and I don’t foresee it breaking down anytime soon. Pretty reliable.
lol 80 degrees sounds about nice right now. 103 where I’m at in Northern CA.Although I heard most houses in WA don’t have air conditioning. Good luck with that.
You can change the dash modes through the radio. There is one that shows current conditions. Dusk, night, day, rain, and even snow on the background of the dashboard. Really wish Kia would make a performance version with the stinger engine in it or a telluride
they're going to come out with an "X-Pro" version of this which will hopefully give more off road capabilities. it'll have small wheels with all terrain tires, more off road modes, and hopefully higher ground clearance. hopefully some underbody protection
That would be some under-body protection where now there is none. That the first visual clue its not true off-road worthy. No reliable down-hill descent mode is another.
When you mentioned suspension I feel that's where the Kia falls short of it European competitors. However, it more than makes up for that with its interior appointments and quality of materials and fabrics. Their alternative from the "sea of gray" used in virtually all European products, at this level, is a refreshing departure to those drab and lifeless interiors. All that's missing is an HUD and a non-animal skins alternative. Speaking of European competitors, cars like the Golf and Tiguan do offer adaptive suspension that are very sophisticated. Those can adjust the ride from sporty to a more compliant all-day highway cruising comfort. They also have launch control and rear-wheel torque vectoring, which was not mentioned for the Sorento -- which is not advertised as a true sports SUV despite its "Sports" gear selection.
Try taking off the traction control when doing any off roading with the sorento. If you do not take off the T/C you risk overheating the transmission from constant traction loss triggering the T/C
This made me think it's sucks off road but with the price point and need to family vehicle we got a 2021 LX anyway. My experience off road was way different, it was way more capable then I thought and great muddin' 😁.
An honest review. I think for the price...I'd rather save a little money and either have an Atlas Cross Sport or the Mazda CX-9. Both of which seemed to do way better on your off road trails. Same trails I go on...except mine usually have snow added lol.
I really like this vehicle and if I bought one it would be spec'd just like this but.....a dual clutch is the worst choice for off road conditions. The lack of torque converter means they have to slip the clutch which is why they overheat, this setup is a pavement princess.
The snow mode I found has the most aggressive wheel braking of the modes we get for US models. Unfortunate that we don’t get off road modes, especially for an x line “off road” trim
ok so you people need to understand this is ALL computer controlled. In USA we drive SUV on road. Earlier comments from another driver said we (as in USA drivers) drive on ROADS not rocks, mud or leaves.. most of the time. The terrain is decided by how much slip there is. Terrain in most off road vehicles is a way to adjust the height of the vehicle.. I think you people are confusing this with Jeeps! Anywho.. the computer (not the transmission or the car) determines how to assign the proper amount of wheel spin based on the selector, but just because it doesn't have mud or some other mode does not make it inferior by any stretch. One more note there is a reason they use AWD instead of 4x4 to describe most of these type vehicles.. All wheel drive is basically for RAIN and basic slipping.. 4x4 implies you would be taking a vehicle OFF ROADING. this isn't a land rover or a Jeep. So stop trying to make it one.
Very strange trim for USA compared to Canada. In Canada this "X" line is middle of the lineup. The EX+ which I'm getting is 44000$ CAD and it has rear AC for the third row ( not mentioned or not available on the trim in the video) and Mud/Snow/Sand modes on top of the drive modes mentioned but the car has a standard ground clearance. The digital dash is only available on the SX trim which is top of the lineup for 47000$ CAD I think.
Interesting that your experience and opinion of the Santa Fe seemed far superior. Both cars have the same drive train. Is the Kia programmed differently, or perhaps there was a problem? I have a 2021 Santa Fe Limited, and while I used to go off road, the Santa Fe will never see anything more than a logging road anyway, but I am very happy with the car, overall, for how I normally use it. Maybe I should be glad I decided on the Santa Fe over the Sorento?
Does this dude ever respond to comments? This sucks my state "Seattle Washington" does not get this suv i want this so bad but not going to oregon to get it.. ill get the xse, i am just hoping this model can go off roading not crazy off road but for camping and overlanding. how is the xse hybrid good for this?
OMG, WINAMP! LoL! I test drove one of these and it was not impressive to me. We did test drive an Outback XP before that tho so we were spoiled. For the money, I'll take the Subaru every. single. time.
It’s not just the engine that makes it tow more it’s the transmission and the whole body on frame for the telluride to tow that much they would have to make it longer and probably put in a hybrid v6 like the Ford Expedition has. Also kia will never do that the engine in the stinger is way smaller than the engine in the telluride and with a hybrid v6 and a whole new body on frame with a longer wheel base you could tow maybe 6,500 at most
I would like to point out that when you started complaining about the throttle not giving your the power. Traction control was kicking in. I do enjoy your videos but this one hit different for me. I felt as if you went into this one with a preconceived notion that Kias just aren't good for any type of off-roading. Kia is also not the only brand to market a center lock as a rear Dif lock.
uh it's the driver he is clearly not good. You don't drive like grandma going up hill you need to drive so the car has some momentum.. this guy is driving like he is afraid of his own shadow.
Agree with this review and I have the same trim level. For 44k+ large it has no memory seats, no ambient lighting. the kicker is that those things are available in the Sorento in their other markets! I remember reading glowing reviews. went for a test drive and it didn’t show any signs of trouble. 3 months down the road the car is doing weird things like completely being powerless when you make a hard turn and the interior stinks. When it got warmer I started noticing a weird old sock smell in the car that I can’t get rid of. apparently it happened with the Telluride as well from what I can see online. Never buying another Kia. I’m going to try to get rid of this one.
Because this one has a new wet style DCT That should work without overheating. (As we mentioned in the video.) Also all the Kia advertising shows this as being capable off-road. We would be failing in our job to not put that to the test.
completely off topic from cars.... i'm not sure when you recorded this video but you mentioned how it's 80 degree in seattle on the day you recorded this but fast forward to the current weekend (6/27/2021) and it is peaking at 115 degrees for three days in a row here in portland. climate change is really fucking us right about now
i am a bit disappointed with the sorento you people get yes it has got a bigger engine 2.5 T but every thing else is lame the sorento that australia and UK get are even more luxurious and are tuned for offroading they get REMOTE PARKING , electronic gear shifters ,proper offroad modes (mud ,sand, rock, dirt, snow) they just get a smaller engine 2.2T with 202 hp and 440 nm torque but its still same 6 to 7 seconds 0 to 60 , they also get heated second row ,it is even tuned for offroading but people still the land cruiser 70 series or the prado you people only get a bigger engine with great power they get optimal power but still win by every thing else
@@ThisGuyRides Good point but if that's the case it should not interfere with your driving if there's not enough data imagine you're in a situation when you need immediate power the car decided not to give it to you base on limited data it have.
This is a bit of a joke, the Sorento is not meant to or be driven on rocky trails, it’s not designed for that nor does it profess to be, look at the running tyres on this car that should tell you what this vehicle is meant for, maybe the odd muddy road or track without ruts or bog holes, it’s a highway cruiser, AWD, not a 4x4, this is not a test of the Sorento, it’s how to damage one…..
Any seasoned driver should “NEVER” rely on a vehicle electronics (downhill descent or anything else ) to drive for you..Usually a big fan of your reviews, but this one has left me a little sour of the complaining of vehicle functionality… Possibly driver/operator error on knowledge of vehicle proper mode settings….

LOL 80 degrees. I'll take it! It was 107 here today.
Awesome as always 💗💗👌
Interesting that your experience and opinion of the Santa Fe seemed far superior. Both cars have the same drive train. Is the Kia programmed differently, or perhaps there was a problem? I have a 2021 Santa Fe Limited, and while I used to go off road, the Santa Fe will never see anything more than a logging road anyway, but I am very happy with the car, overall, for how I normally use it. Maybe I should be glad I decided on the Santa Fe over the Sorento?
Thank you for the great video!!
I'd love to see your independent test on the Honda Passport AWD.
The suspension is adjustable with the ride type. Comfort, Sport, etc...
Not on our test car, nor any other a Sorento sold in the USA.
Does this dude ever respond to comments? This sucks my state "Seattle Washington" does not get this suv i want this so bad but not going to oregon to get it.. ill get the xse, i am just hoping this model can go off roading not crazy off road but for camping and overlanding. how is the xse hybrid good for this?
sport mode is the most direct
OMG, WINAMP! LoL! I test drove one of these and it was not impressive to me. We did test drive an Outback XP before that tho so we were spoiled. For the money, I'll take the Subaru every. single. time.
Middle east version had v6 3.5 and 2.5 mpi and some country 2.5 gdi like the k5
Kia needs to put the Stinger v6 turbo in the Telluride .... so that it can tow in the 7k range ..... come on Kia ..... make it happen !
It’s not just the engine that makes it tow more it’s the transmission and the whole body on frame for the telluride to tow that much they would have to make it longer and probably put in a hybrid v6 like the Ford Expedition has. Also kia will never do that the engine in the stinger is way smaller than the engine in the telluride and with a hybrid v6 and a whole new body on frame with a longer wheel base you could tow maybe 6,500 at most
Half the S u V out there will never see mud or a trail lovely Su v for the money🏴👍
Do you usually do exit 38 off i90 for these tests? That's where I usually go so figured these would be perfect reviews if so.
Mayyyyybe.
The X line soul is the same, but no off-roading or even Trail going
Test drive also new Hyundai Santa Fe HTRAC AWD (XTR package) model?. 🤔
Is the throttle issue just turbo lag? I feel like that should be expected
did you ever get a response from Kia about its off road capability issues ?
I would like to point out that when you started complaining about the throttle not giving your the power. Traction control was kicking in. I do enjoy your videos but this one hit different for me. I felt as if you went into this one with a preconceived notion that Kias just aren't good for any type of off-roading. Kia is also not the only brand to market a center lock as a rear Dif lock.
i dont like the way these type vehicles roll backwards when your trying to get up a hill and are on the gas
uh it's the driver he is clearly not good. You don't drive like grandma going up hill you need to drive so the car has some momentum.. this guy is driving like he is afraid of his own shadow.
AWD SUVs are for people who suffer from PTSD for being stuck in the snow
Turbo and dual clutch transmission. What can possibly go wrong? 🤔
I need sounds of nature
This car deserves a V6
16:30 why didn't you change modes then?
Disappointing AWD, bummer.
Haha what are you doing car? Bought my 2021 Subaru forester sport from watching this channel.
How about new santa fe?
I am so glad I left Kia last year after 7 years. I went back to Subaru which is mile away in comfort and utility.
Oh please. They are great now.
Why
You were dying at 80 degrees?
No memory seats on American version but on Canadian version. Makes no sense.
It's the traction control it does it to me. You have to turn it off.
Put a Spanish translation please🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 good channel👍🏼
How Much price in india Rupees
That weird smell could be water in the carpets, I find it happens to my cars after winter when all the snow melts and gets the carpet wet
Who said Sorento is for offroad. You should put a Porsche 911 for the test.
Kia. In all their ads.
Why do y’all keep testing the xline if you know the dct can’t handle it
Because this one has a new wet style DCT That should work without overheating. (As we mentioned in the video.) Also all the Kia advertising shows this as being capable off-road. We would be failing in our job to not put that to the test.
@@drivingsports we also should test what majority of consumers will buy ex and Under
I tested one offroad and it overheated within 30-mins will never touch one of these with a barge pole
So not durabel like toyotas?
Try the Lincoln Aviator
If I had to get an suv it would be a Subaru
Why.
Seems like a little moody today. The heat is affecting you i suppose. Perhaps some🍉🍉🍉 might help you cool ✌😎
The torque-vectoring seems next to useless.
nice but when one gets into the $40-45K might as well go 4 runner
Nutless
completely off topic from cars....
i'm not sure when you recorded this video but you mentioned how it's 80 degree in seattle on the day you recorded this but fast forward to the current weekend (6/27/2021) and it is peaking at 115 degrees for three days in a row here in portland. climate change is really fucking us right about now
i am a bit disappointed with the sorento you people get yes it has got a bigger engine 2.5 T but every thing else is lame the sorento that australia and UK get are even more luxurious and are tuned for offroading they get REMOTE PARKING , electronic gear shifters ,proper offroad modes (mud ,sand, rock, dirt, snow) they just get a smaller engine 2.2T with 202 hp and 440 nm torque but its still same 6 to 7 seconds 0 to 60 , they also get heated second row ,it is even tuned for offroading but people still the land cruiser 70 series or the prado you people only get a bigger engine with great power they get optimal power but still win by every thing else
They should rename that to Not-so-smart driving mode
Doesn't it take a while for smart mode to learn your driving habits?
@@ThisGuyRides Good point but if that's the case it should not interfere with your driving if there's not enough data imagine you're in a situation when you need immediate power the car decided not to give it to you base on limited data it have.
@@kilawin7456 I'm not sure how smart mode learns, but disappointed that he didn't try sport mode at all.
Smart mode means the car change the driving that self so that's not focused on off-road usually for just road driving
Lets be honest, most voice controls no matter what brand never really work as good as the fruit and robot mobile devices
You must’ve missed all the advertising that shows the Sorento climbing mountains. Kia has explicitly advertised it as such.
Take a jetta on that trail.
Lesson from today: if you can buy a Subaru for the same price, just do it.
80° ain't nothing come to texas its 102 lol 80° here is perfect weather.
Lol. It’s going to be 115° in Seattle today and I’m currently in Texas… where it’s 75° and currently raining.
@@drivingsports it rained last night but now it's humid and hot. Yeah I even that it's 112 that's ridiculous it never gets that hot there.
That navigation/head unit gave me so much anxiety 😟. Overall I rate this SUV a BIG NO!
So you preloaded a Dualclutch transmission??? 🤣🤣🤣
Dlaczego kurwa nie ma w Europie takich brązowych foteli !?
A 2021…still running? WTF
here is the link to australia's sorento ua-cam.com/video/YU6ildqQ9sc/v-deo.html
Any seasoned driver should “NEVER” rely on a vehicle electronics (downhill descent or anything else ) to drive for you..Usually a big fan of your reviews, but this one has left me a little sour of the complaining of vehicle functionality… Possibly driver/operator error on knowledge of vehicle proper mode settings….
