Kia: 11:1 crawl ratio Wet Dual Clutch 8 speed
VW Atlas: 20:1 crawl ratio, traditional automatic 8 speed.
The Volkswagen combined with Haldex 5 could be one of the most capable crossovers that doesn’t have a rear twin clutch differential. You just have to give it more ground clearance. I’m 2 minutes into watching, but I know which one will do better 😃.

10:18 the Ridgeline has a 20:1 crawl ratio with twin clutch rear differential. The Atlas does it next best (2nd least violence). The Outback XT is 3rd. The Sorento is last and incredibly violent. Man, I love your videos 😃

The Sorento's interior is more premium. Kia did a great job at giving contrast in the interior by giving it camel brown leather and gray imitation wood, give the interior material and color diversity.

Interesting comparison, folks. As the owner of a KIA ( 2018 Sorento) and a VW (2018 GTI) I really don't have a dog in this fight. At least as far as the brands are concerned. In any event, if the sort of off-roading represented by the Washington Overland Trail was a major priority neither of the vehicles would be my choice. And if forced to undertake the mission I'd certainly replace the All Season tires with more appropriate rubber on either one.
So let's be frank. The Sorento and the Cross Sport are each 21st century versions of family station wagons for Americans who have abandoned both wagons and minivans. Serious off-roading is the mission of few midsize SUVs. It's certainly fair to test the Sorento and Cross Sport marketing-base off-road pretensions but for the vast majority of customers neither will be subjected to challenges more severe than inclement weather on paved roads and occasional forays on well traveled dirt or gravel. Want to be totally confident in traversing the Overland Trail? Get a trail-rated Wrangler, a Bronco, or a Defender. That's not to say, of course, that your review was inappropriate. But as my Daddy used to say, "When you see dogs dancing you don't ask how well they do it. It's amazing that they do it at all."

Would everyone on here talking about “Off-road capabilities suck on the Hyundai/Kia” take a few moments to research “Tire Technology”. It does not take rocket science to figure out that a simple change of boots will provide a tremendous difference in handling and performance. All the host wanted to show you is how they perform with factory provided equipment. If you put the same tires on both vehicles my money would be on that Sorento X!! The Volkswagen just looked way to sluggish and under powered I’m my eyes.

I am a big VW fan and I do like the Kia also, I love their vents because in cold climates, you really want those down pointing vents to warm up your lower body. I also LOVE the bottom hinged gas pedal, which VW used to have and the Passat is the last one to have that... really disappointed that VW and AUDI gave it up, and Toyota and Kia picked it up, smart decision for the latter. We had a Sorento 2020 as a loaner in California for a week and we really liked it, my wife especially liked the driving position and the bottom hinged gad pedal since she is shorter. We were going to trade our Tiguan for the Sorento until I found out the Kia has a DSG, which to me is a hard NO in anything larger than a GTI.

Don't understand why these were taken off-road. These vehicles are more "trail" rated with the stock tires. If you wanted to show it's off road capability for a fair fight, slap on some proper all terrain or off road tires.

The Kia ads in particular show the Sorento "scaling mountains" and ripping up valleys. They specifcially target off-road adventure. As for the tires... manufacturers don't let us change tires on test cars. That's something we don't have control over. But then again, they're both on equally awful off-road tires. So it's equal.

Driving up the hill was not at all like driving in snow and ice lol. Snow mode will never work to climb a dry dusty hill like that, that's user error in choosing the wrong mode. Automatic or off-road modes are far better test case scenario in future. This is because snow mode lowers your rpm so your acceleration feels dull to prevent slipping once ice for example. You need that acceleration to climb that hill and snow mode won't give it to you.

...everyone talks about KIA's/Hyundai's fantastic 10-year warranty; but no one ever discusses getting a warranty repair at year 6 or 7...or even at year 9+. How "easy" is it to get a failed part warrantied at the dealer beyond year 5? Is it just the part that is covered or is labor covered too? What service history must the car have in order for the service manager/dealer not say "owner abuse" caused the failure? Sorry, I have to side with VW on this one. My '04 GTI was nearly flawless.

@@K03sport I have had phenomenal coverage with my Hyundai's & Kia's. They cover parts and labor. They stated the sound I heard was caused by a bad CV joint in the axle and it was 53 miles short of 100,000 miles. They told me the part would be in the following day and go about what I had to do and even though when I would be returning it would be over the 100,000 miles for the replacement of axle shaft it would still be covered under warranty since the issue was found previously to 100,000 miles. Also there were times that they would also give me a loaner vehicle for part of the day or even a couple days if need be. Another thing is you can also pay to extend your 5 years 60,000 miles bumper to bumper out to 10 years 100,000 miles. I have done that on every one and it has always more than paid for itself. $840 and got over $4000 in parts and labor. Hope this was helpful.

In Canada we get terrain modes Snow/Mud/ Sand on the same switch as the drive modes, also these UA-cam "car people" test these cars with street tires and they know about it. Most middle class people with decent income will never take a 45000$CAD car that they have on payments for 7 years beyond the back alley of a neighborhood in which they are lost, forget about taking these cars off-road. As for the cars in the vid, the Kia wins all day long with 5year/100,000 km warranty vs VW for almost $50k CAD here with 4y/80,000km, we also have remote starter button built into the key fob from factory so you get a remote starter which costs around 600$ CAD usually to install a Kia 2 way system at a dealer. That 3d row should be viewed as an added bonus, you have it just in case, no adult will sit there in reality. I recently drove 2021 Sorento SX 2.5L turbo and was very impressed being an owner of a 2018 3.3L V6 Sorento EX+, the 21' Sorento has way more torque than my car, it really puts you into the seats and is perfect for the short bursts in town. The new Sorento is lighter and is 10-12% more fuel efficient than my 2018 which gets 8.2L on average / 100km in the City which is good for a V6. I used to be a VW fan but just got tired of wasting money. In Canada the Kia trims are so loaded at 45K range that to get a similar VW you need to spend over 50K

They are more concerned with designing these to show they are fast, but they are too low to the ground, too much overhang in the back and front, these are good for very flat dirt roads, but off road, NO! Right now we have a 2006 Kia Sedona after a Moose on a suicide mission stepped in front of her back in 2018 totaling our 2016 Escape. The Sedona was only supposed to be a temporary vehicle while insurance was resolved, etc. We fell in love with the little Kia instantly because it fits her perfectly. Happy 4th of July over there! I really like so much your dedicated dive into the tech of cars to use a bit off the shopping mall parking lanes. And when you are two there in the episodes, the added dialogue certainly creates more fun atmosphere to it. Being myself since 6 months hooked with a Sub Forester e-boxer on the European spec (weak torque honestly, miss my former diesel) i find a lot of pleasure in the ins and outs of Sweden. Responsibly of course, since we have a generous access to the nature here, but not for motor vehicles else than on trails, worth to mention.
An extra LED-array to see the wild crossing the roads in the summer nights is a good measure, when sky is light, but the ground is a dark silhouette. The excellent power distribution has so far helped me NOT hitting the lane separator on a highway in sudden deep snow, I was like the butter in a fry pan, when an invisible hand firmly took me slow and firm back into my own lane, God bless the Engineering office in Tokyo for that! Or pulling out a 30+ year old barn find on locked wheels of an Volvo Amazon from the 60's. When cars were made of solid steel. But intelligent little light wighter Sub pulled her out and up to the awaiting transportation in a waiting Dodge RAM, comfortable on... yes, the shopping mall parking areas! :D Cheers and keep up the good work, you two!

I honestly think that you gave the vw less of a chance before deciding to give it momentum. You have done your rock trail with this and it did it more easily, and 4motion needs a bit of slippage and rpm to work, just an honest opinion, great video and good chemistry with karlena, fun videos you do together!

My old 2005 Hyundai Terracan would go around this track much better than these two vehicles but i wouldn't go as far as saying it was a better car.I'm sure they are very comfy to take a long drive in though where cars and trucks designed to go around countryside as this aren't so great for long distances. You don't see Tour de France riders using mountain bikes if you get my drift.

Every Kia/Hyundai product you've taken off-road fails at basic things, either the Traction control has no idea what to do or the CVT and the clutch overheats, the computer gets confused, and stutters, can't imagine what would happen to a family driving that Kia on snow/ice...there is a reason Volkswagen is the number car maker in the world, flashy designs will only get you so far.
