    This is my favorite Chicago song after Peter Cetera left the band. It was Chicago's first top ten song after Cetera left. It reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1987 and #2 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. This is Jason Scheff on lead vocals.

    Peter Cetera left the band because he wanted to pursue a solo career. Originally, he wanted to stay in Chicago and do solo projects on the side. Much like Phil Collins and Genesis. However, Chicago's management was not crazy about that idea. Sad to see Peter leave, but it ultimately worked out for both sides!

    • @francisseidel8014
      @francisseidel8014 Рік тому +22

      Not just the management, the band (according to Peter) gave him an ultimatum - Solo or Band but not both. Peter didn't get the support Phil Collins did and that was the most disappointing part. You would have thought they would have wanted to keep the band together after the death of Terry but they dropped Peter like he was easily replaced. He wasn't.

    • @karensaldanha4760
      @karensaldanha4760 Рік тому +12

      That's not exactly what happened. Yes, he wanted to do solo albums and solo touring doing and demanding to only tour with Chicago half the time plus not playing bass anymore. He was just not into the horns anymore. Robert Lamm (lead singer, songwriter and keyboardist from the start) had 9 solo albums, but never stopped totally touring rehearsing and writing with Chicago.
      As for the sound. It was the first album after Peter Cetera left, but they still had producer David Foster as producer, who was responsible for their change of sound to heavily favor power ballads without the horns as it was what Peter Cetera felt more suitable to. Anyhow, Chicago fired David Foster after this and took their band back. Although, they are for the most part a more mellower band, the horns are totally back.

    I love this band. Terry Kath formed Chicago, 1st called “The Big Thing” & recruited Walter Parazaider, Danny Seraphine, and He stayed with Parazaider, Seraphine, and Loughnane instead,[19] who quickly recruited trombonist James Pankow from De Paul and vocalist/keyboardist Robert Lamm.[17] Kath sang the lower range of lead vocals in the group[17] in a style Loughnane who brought in James Pankow & vocalist/keyboardist Robert Lamm. Their 1st album at CTA was awesome! I’m a man, Questions 67&68, Introduction. Beginnings, Call on me, Wishing you were here. Kath formed Chicago as a Jazz/Rock band with no frontman, just frontmen. They all considered Kath the leader. After his death, things changed. Cetera & new manager took over. Less horns. “His style “. I for one was happy when he left.

    Amber said (long ago) she would never have another moment like the first time she heard Chicago. Now you're listening to the power ballad era where all of what you're used to has been erased by producers. Try "Introduction" from the days when they were trying to get the audience to listen to something they hadn't heard before - a story song by the original members, and it's so special that the replacements over the years can still make it a great performance.

    You really should have listened to the full extended version. The intro and outro bookend the song and it makes more musical sense.
    If you want a strong song with Peter Cetera and that Big Band sound, try "Hard Habit to Break." It starts slow - with flutes that sound like a love song from Tiffany, no less - but then Peter comes in and it starts to sound familiar, then one of the other band members sings a different part with a different effect. Then, the big moments with electric guitars and drum and horns you like that make you feel all shivery happen. It's a great song. It'll probably become one of your favorites.

    This is the later Chicago- as they moved through the mid-to-late 80s, they took on a more shiny Pop/Adult Conemporary sound. (The change really started while Cetera was still in the group. "Hard to Say I'm Sorry", "Youre the Inspiration" and "Hard Habit to Break" were all David Foster radio-friendly productions. During this time, groups like Chicago, Toto and Starship seemed to mellow from their original 60's & 70's Rock/Jazz roots. It was just a sign of the times; the record labels were focused more on getting hits, rather than the artistry.
    Chicago still made some great music during this time. Jason Scheff and Bill Champlin split the lead vocals and both are tremendous singers and musicians. This song and "Look Away" were my favorites.

    As an 80s kid, this is the Chicago I grew up with. I was introduced to the 70s Chicago sound later on in life as I got older. So for me, I will always love the Chicago power ballads first. Chicago and Peter Cetera as a solo artist have some of the best 80s love songs.

    The wife and I were married in 86 when I was stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, and she sent me this song, along with a bunch of others, on cassette tapes she recorded from the radio. I still have the playlist she sent me, but the cassettes died a long time ago. So, this song is pretty special.

    If you ever get the chance Jay and Amber, find the full album version of Will You Still Love Me on Chicago 18. You'll hear an extended intro and a beautiful winding outro to this song. The song seems more complete that way. Chicago in the mid 80s (1982-1986) was very different than Chicago in the 70s. What you are hearing, with this song especially, is all due to David Foster, their producer at the time (1982-1986). WYSTM was co-written by Foster and outside writers, which happened more and more from that point on. I know some fans really disliked this era of Chicago, but I loved it! Especially when Cetera and Foster worked together (Chicago 16 and Chicago 17). But I also loved the early-to-mid 70s version. It's all good.

    Chicago in the 80's was pretty much about love ballads. From my understanding this was David Foster's idea because the music scene was moving away from the bigger band sound. This song was off of Chicago 18 which came out in the late 80's.

  • @thundernels
    @thundernels Рік тому +2

    In the 80’s, the band brought in super producer David Foster who helped bring Chicago on a HUGE 80s run even though, in retrospect, it is a sound that wasn’t quite as identifiable as Chicago as other periods. Yet, if you were coming-of-age in the time period, these were monster songs at school dances. But, there is probably more of David Foster in these than the horn players. I like all eras of Chicago for different reasons.

    A good song from my senior year in high school. Peter left in 1985 this was released in 86 with Jason Scheff as lead vocalist. By 1988 Chicago had their first number one song without Peter with a great song LOOK AWAY and this was with another lead singer Bill Champlin. Check out Look Away.
    You already checked out one of Peter's solo projects with his duet with Amy Grant The Next Time I Fall.

    This song!!! Chicago 18 (1986)the album upon which this song was released, and Chicago 19 (1988), were outstanding. They also were released in my high school years. Lots of memories! This album also had a remake of 25 or 6 to 4 which rocked even a little harder than the original. Chicago 19 had many massive hits from both of these albums and cemented them as a power ballad rock band of the 80's ( including album 17). Three great albums!!! Chicago changed with the times without losing their distinctive sound. Its why they've made it 60 something years. Good on 'em!!!

    Can I recommend some UB40 for you? 'Red red wine' is one of my favourites- but I say that about all their songs! They are a British reggae group, 8 members of 3 or 4 different ethnicities, brought together by a love for reggae, and they were on a mission to bring reggae to the masses. 😁 they are my absolute favourites, I've seen them live 8 times lol. I'd love to see what you both think. ❤

      @@mstewart109as much as those of us revel in Chicago until TK left us ... They needed to stay relevant to the masses or they would disappear... I as well did not enjoy this sound as much as the 70s but it served a purpose. There are some tracks that are like old Chicago during this time.

      @mstewart109 it's not all bubble gum. They have been and always will be a rock band with horns. They are NOT just a sappy love song band, but they are missing a lot of great stuff from when Terry, Peter and Danny were there.

    • @markwideman339
      @markwideman339 Рік тому

      @@mstewart109 I don't agree at all that Chicago became a bubble gum band, that is pure nonsense. If you have listened to EVERY SONG THEY HAVE EVER RECORDED ALL THE WAY THROUGH, you would not be saying that. Yes, no one can replace the original group, but all of the versions of Chicago are great and also should get more recognition than they get. The original Chicago was beyond great, but they are still great. You have to listen to ALL of their music to understand that they are the MOST DIVERSE band of all time.
