This might be “the perfect song”. It gives me goosebumps EVERY TIME.
Same here! It brings tears to my eyes! Unbelieveable vibes!
No joke, I don’t know if it’s because I was a child of the 80’s but man it just does something to me emotionally, especially while watching the Blue Angels execute! Fucking get teary-eyed every time.
At the time the song came out, the record company didn't want to finance a video. The NAVY actually made the video & used the song. Great choice!
One of the most inspiring songs of the 80s. The video was made in conjunction with the Blue Angels and Warner Bros. Records. The message is simple: achieving your dreams is not always gonna be easy. Those who make you cry, save those tears, they will be an example of what you've been through to get to where you are. Dreams are made through blood sweat and tears, not in that particular order. Sammy mentioned that he was inspired by the opening synth riff by Eddie to write the song, as he was now in a band with someone who upped his musicianship, so he had to up his songwriting to match what the genius was composing. It makes my heart soar every time I listen to it.
This song is from Van Halen’s album titled 5150. It came out in 1986 and is still my favorite rock album of all time.
I grew up in San Diego. My dad was US Navy. We never missed a show. I was naive enough to think that I was going to be a Blue Angel Pilot 😉
Me too, and a Thunderbird since I'm an air force kid
Navy brat here! Lived in SD for three years. My father was silent service for 33 years.
Im also a Navy brat. Cherry Point, SD, Bremerton, Kanehoe, Long Beach. Fly Navy!
Neither sorry! But love me some blue angels! They come to Seattle every year. 😖😢 But COVID gonna take them away for 2nd year. Sammy crushes everything he does.
Dreams are what makes us🙂
I had the album before i saw the video. I loved the whole thing. I do prefer Sammy over DLR. Just my preference.
Sammy has more hits, can't argue it even if purists hate Van Hagar 🤷🏻♂️
We haven't forgotten you, Jeff Kuss. May you continue to fly with the angels.
The last time I saw them, they used the songs from 'Top Gun' and it was sensational!! They are the best of the best. My hubby was a Navy Medic so I got to meet several of them! All outstanding men and women!! Yes, they have woman pilots too that get chosen. GO NAVY!!!
Number 3 and number 4 are neighbors of ours on NAS Pensacola -- the nicest guys you will ever meet! One of the angels transitioning out was just hit by a car, hospitalized with multiple injuries including a broken back. Please pray that Jeff will be able to fly again!
🙏
My dad retired from the Air Force and watching the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels are awesome 🎶❤️🎶❤️
Summer 1986. This song and album came out. Never forget it. Loved this song. Love Van Halen with Sammy and David lee Roth
I remember 1986 too when this album came out with Sammy. It was successful beyond belief and what a great summer.
Wow!!!! What a shocker, I was about to leave my job to go to rehab n I look on my phone n it said that Eddie Van Halen had past away from Throat Cancer at the age of 65 years. Eddie was an icon n in my opinion, the Greatest Rock N Roll Guitarist of all time. Him n his brother Alex Van Halen started the group in the 70's then teamed up with Bass Player Michael Anthony & The Greatest Lead Man in Rock N Roll History, David Lee Roth n then came Sammy Hager. They had so many great hits from the 70's, 80's & 90's. The ones that I like were with David Lee Roth, Panama my favorite, then comes Jump & Jamie's Cryin. Rip Eddie Van Halen, Ur now up in Heaven's Tears playing Panama, just like ur music video flying in the air. God Bless The Van Halen Fam. Wolfgang (Son), Alex (Brother) & Valerie Bertinelli (Ex-Wife).
The editing on that video deserves huge credit! Whoever edited the clips to the music did a fantastic job! Not easy to do when the shots are so various and unrelated to a story.
I am in my 40's, have LOVED this song my entire life, and have NEVER seen the video! 😳 Was great!
This album, 5150, was the first with singer Sammy Hagar after David Lee Roth left in 1985. The song "Dreams" came out just before the Blue Angels experienced a tragic accident, so the song was dedicated to the Angels. The song was originally about the spiritual aspect of romantic love.
Glad you like it sir! I was stationed in Pensacola (where they are stationed) and we would go watch them practice sometimes. Go Navy! Thanks!!!
I live here and love it!
We went to Pensacola last year
*This song came out in '86 on the Van Halen 5150 album (1st one with Sammy Hagar in band).. I had taken 2-3 'lessons' at local airport and I used to play this as a confidence booster...* Fast Forward 10 yrs, due to bad economy I went through Oklahoma State University's aviation management BS degree program, and have been in airport management since around 2000.
Ironically on KSO we have had a discussion of Airshow Music from the 80s going on ----- *Van Halen "Dreams", Steve Miller "Fly Like An Eagle" (used by the Air Force in the 1970s-80s for recruiting commercials & Thunderbirds), Loverboy "Turn Me Loose", 2-3 Gloria Estefan songs, but usually "Turn the Beat Around", Survivor "Eye of the Tiger", Neil Diamond's "Coming to America", and you always had Patriotic music like Sousa stuff, "America the Beautiful".*
My mom's friend had a brother in military and flew blue angels. I was a teen but became pen pal with him. He sent me pictures of blue angels. When I hear this song I think of 911. This song for years played on radios for what happened 😓. Bittersweet moment 💗
The jet's get to within 18 inches of each other in formation.
Van Halen, Sammy Hagar, and the Blue Angels. You can't ask for a better combo.
I've seen the thunderbirds once as a kid and the blue angels twice as an adult, both teams are phenomenal. Hagar's voice and the keyboard intro to this song are forever ingrained in my mind relating to the blue angels :)
Love Van Halen, both the Roth & Hagar eras. Blue Angels are awesome too, loved watching them practice anytime they've been here for an air show
I’m late to this video but I lived in Pensacola for two years just across the bayou from NAS. I was off work for 3 months due to surgery and I would stand in the driveway and watch them practice…they would fly right over the house and big circles on their sides just above the treetops. You NEVER get tired of it! The jets are so brilliant blue with the bright yellow US NAVY on the underside of the wings. And the noise!!! It’s been 11 years since I moved back to Indiana and I still miss them! 💙
I’ve lived in Pensacola for close to 30 years. The Blues are our pride and joy! They are the perfection of Ariel demonstration.
I heard alot before I saw the video. It gives me energy. It makes me wanna get in my car & roll the windows down & drive with it cranked up! Dreams? That's what it's all about. Happiness!
This is one of those songs that's going to get me in trouble with the law one day. My foot seems to get really heavy when this comes on in the car. :D
If you could ONLY SEE a Sammy Hagar concert, in St Louis, when they play this song and everybody reaching UP!! I swear, it's like everyone levitates!! Sammy and St Louis. Lord, please let that happen AGAIN!!! GO NAVY!!!
STL loves Sammy!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
This is a song about following your dreams and never giving up: "Reach for the sky, baby just spread your wings."
It's one of the more optimistic songs out there, and the video is very uplifting in a Top Gun kind of way, using footage of the Blue Angels fighter jets from the United States Navy.
This is from a website, Google it before spread your words.
Thank you for all of the heart, soul and energy you put into your music. Truly "what dreams are made of" (VH lyrics from Dreams, my fave).. "Music kept me off the streets and out of trouble and gave me something that was mine that no one could take away from me" (quote) -Eddie Van Halen RIP Eddie 💗🎸💐............
I appreciate the video and the reaction! I was turned on to Van Halen in 79 when I was in 7th grade. They're the reason I play guitar and love music!🤘🎸👊
Love the Blue Angels!! Having the opportunity to see them all the time during practices and shows is simply awesome ! So happy to live in Pensacola, home for the Angels!
Having attended many airshows at EAA Oshkosh, nothing beats the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, Missing Man formations, the Harrier...so much fun. Oh, Van Halen rocks too!
I saw first heard this song in Birmingham, AL in 1986, my senior year during the Van Halen “5150” tour with Sammy Hagar doing the lead vocals.
The place was a sell out!
5 feet from the stage!
It was awesome! All of the songs from the 5150 album were phenomenal. I had tears in my eyes watching the video. My heart was soaring 💕
(Apologies... this comment is kinda long. Just started tappin' the keys, reminiscing, and lamenting...)
I grew up when Van Halen were in their heyday. Was never a big VH fan, but I was an absolute nut for things with wings, so this song was the frakkin' bomb to my teenage self. (Still is, to my middle-aged self.)
I too have gone to many airshows over the years, and have seen the Blues several times. I was fortunate enough to see them a few times when they still flew the 'Scooter'... that was one of the nicknames given to the A-4 Skyhawk, the jet shown in the video. Actually, the model the Blues flew was called the 'Super Fox'... they flew the A-4F, known as the 'Foxtrot' or simply 'Fox' because it was the 'F' model. Only, their jets were souped up a bit... they had more powerful engines and weren't equipped with all the schtuff that combat-ready A-4s had... so they were lighter. The lighter weight combined with the more powerful engines meant that the 'Super Fox' was a frakkin' rocket. Hence the name. But I digress...
Anyway, again, I was fortunate to see them a few times while they still flew the Scooter... it was a helluva show. The A-4 wasn't too awful fast, as in straight-line speed, but it was QUICK... nimble. That little jet could roll and turn like nobody's business. And they flew the tightest diamond in the history of history. 'Twas a joy to watch the Blues in the Scooter.
Sadly, I was also unfortunate to see them at Niagara Falls in 1985 when the two solos collided during a maneuver called the Blivet. One of them was killed... and my 12-13 year-old mind had quite the time processing it all. It was a surreal experience... watching one of the jets lazily fall to Earth while in an inverted flat spin. When it hit, there was no ear-shattering explosion like you see in the movies... just a distance-delayed 'crump' and a big fireball and a ton'a smoke. Alotta folks initially thought that both pilots got out because there were two parachutes. What most, including myself at the time, did not know was that the seat had its own parachute, so that when the pilot separated from the seat after ejecting it wouldn't hit him. One guy standing close to us knew the score, though... he was in tears... an old Navy guy, he knew right away that one of them hadn't made it. I'm welling up just thinking about it now, 36 years later. That kinda thing never leaves you, I guess... 'twas the only time in my life that I witnessed another person's death.
Sorry to be a downer.
Anyhoo, I enjoyed your reaction here... I could see your appreciation of a few things, especially the Double Tuck Over Roll. (the synchronized roll performed by the two solos at 2:57 of your video) That's a mind-blower if you're viewing them from the right angle. Google it, you'll find a bunch of videos of them doing it in the Hornet... it's something to behold when all goes perfectly.
Okay, I'll stop rambling here... later...
Wow, the Old Skool A-4’s. I got to see those birds preform at NAS Moffett. It was right at the very end of their service life. Not long after the Angels switched the the Hornets.
I play this video with my 5 month old grand daughter. She is mesmerized watching it.
You're wrong
This is a song about following your dreams and never giving up: "Reach for the sky, baby just spread your wings."
It's one of the more optimistic songs out there, and the video is very uplifting in a Top Gun kind of way, using footage of the Blue Angels fighter jets from the United States Navy.
I first heard this when i was 12 years old at the end of the original Power Rangers movie in 1995. (True Story)
Same here
😂😂😂my son watched that so much I now associate this song with that movie. NOT the concert I saw but the movie
Same here! The solo at the end sounded so much like the guitar from the series theme.
me too bro I was 9 at the time
Me too!
Kudos to the pilotsl; that is some some balls of steel there! Amazing!
This is one of my favorites of VH it's powerful, upbeat, and inspirational.
The Thunderbirds are wonderful...but, being a Navy family, the Blue Angels Rule!
Thanks to All of our brave men and women who Serve in All Branches of our Armed Services. You're The Best !!!
Great Reaction great team and one of the Greatest rock and Roll songs EVER!!!!!!! Thank You!!
I remember watching this video at the Enlisted Club when I was in A School in Pensacola. We used to watch the Blue Angels practice at Pensacola Beach (P Beach). They have an annual air show at the old Mather AFB near where I work, and when the Blue Angels are there they practice right over our complex. They get pretty low and the buildings just RUMBLE. It's AWESOME!
I worked at a Naval Air Station for many years and we got to see the Blue Angels practice on a regular basis. Never got tired of watching them. Sadly, sometimes there were accidents and some of the airmen died. There were three music videos made for the song. The most well known version was shot in 1986 and featured the US Navy's Blue Angels performing a variety of aerial stunts with the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk.
I heard the song on the radio first and loved the lyrics of following your dreams. One of my favorite songs by Van Halen.
Love the song. Love the Blue Angels even more.
I heard this song when it was first released and fell in love with it. I would cry when I heard it but I never knew why. I recorded it to a blank cassette and played it ALL the time singing at the top of my lungs.
Then I saw this video and I was blown away. Thanks for playing it.
RIP Eddie.... TT
This is one of my favorite music videos, brilliant cinematography and music.
This will go down as one of my favorite songs. How can you not be inspired by it?
Oh yes!!!Give me more!!! Love jets and love Van Halen!!! 💗💗💗💗
Have always loved this video. When I hear this song I always picture the Blue Angels flying. This video was actually put together by The Blue Angels in 1986 for recruiting purposes at the same Van Halen released it as a single.
Ty, Rip to Eddie Van Halen who passed away yesterday. He was an icon guitarist player in Rock n roll history. Please do a music video reaction to Van Halen's Panama Music Video. This will be a nice tribute to Eddie. God Bless The Van Halen Fam on their loss.
I just cannot believe it, I am so sad...💔
Bro, you HAVE to admit that's some SICK piloting skills!! Pure precision!!!
These guys are the best of the best !
Went to watch them as a kid many time & it's great they have going strong all of these years !
God bless all of you brave pilots & thank you for your service 😎
Pensacola girl here , Home of the Blue Angels . Great song and yes I know the song well but your right if it was my first time ever hearing this song and i was watching this video I would not have a clue about what they are singing , i was way too distracted with the Blue Angels because they are so great.
I don't think anyone has ever made me love music the way Eddie Van Halen did. This song still gives me goosebumps; that last solo, tears. RIP Edward, Light Up The Sky!
I love this song and I've seen the Blue Angels about 4 times. I love that someone put the two together.
ahh - van hagar. after david lee left and sammy came in . awesome song and vid. most incredible formation flyers in the world insanely terrifying and exhilarating at the same time
This is my favorite Van Halen song and video. Reminds me of my time in the Air Force.
The blue Angels have brand new rides!
DLR was the better frontman but Hagar had the better voice , great track one of my favourites, used to listen to this a lot as a young man, great to hear it again, great memories.
I was thinking the same thing, David Lee was definitely a showman, but Sammy had the voice!!! VanHagar was good but my favorite songs were with DLR!!!
I was fortunate enough to see Van Halen with both DLR and Sammy. DLR may have been a better front man (I think that's debatable, since Sammy is the better singer...but DLR DEFINITELY wins in the personality department), but watching Eddie and Sammy have a "dueling guitars" session was frankly amazing. Sammy is an underrated guitarist and performed on a par with Eddie, at least at the show I attended.
Yeah I totally agree. Sammy in Montrose was insanely good, lifted VH when the shit went down with Dave.
Sammy was the better song writer, too!
The songs they made with DLR were so much better
Great song and what an awesome video for it..now there is some skill..really enjoyed this so thanks to John from my home as well Aussie land great choice mate
Keep Safe Keep Strong My Dear Friend
I was lucky enough to see them twice live and in 1994 they played this song with a extra long ending outro solo and vocal with Sammy and Ed with Michael. Plus I was peaking on a couple of hits of acid 😂
I first saw the video for dreams at the px game room on the Pensacola navy base in 1986 i was very blown away that they used the legendary Blues Angles in a rock video I have been a Van Halen fan since the age of 10 I will be 50 the 21st of October 2020 I love there music just as much if not more than I did as a teenager I Will turn as many new people on to Van Halen Eddie Van Halen is the greatest guitar player of all times what he did for rock music and the electric guitar will never be duplicated thank you Eddie Van Halen for all the great songs and inspiration that you gave to the world you will be missed you may be gone but your legacy will live on for generations to come R.I.P Eddie Van Halen
Was lucky enough to see a couple of incarnations of the Angel's when I was a kid, seeing them in Abbotsford, BC, Canada...Skyhawks and then Hornets. Loved them both. But Dreams is forever etched in my mind as being attached to a BA airshow. Every single time I hear that song, all I see and hear are the Blue Angels.
Yeah bro I'm so happy that you like the air shows my dad wasn't engineer locked Martin for 35 years I won't tell you what he did but he used to take us to all the Air Show I always wanted to be blue Angel every time I watch this it reminds me my father I miss h i m thank you for reacting brother
Sammy Hagar is on the Mt. Rushmore of frontmen.
Since I live next to the largest Naval Base in the world I have seen the Blue Angels many times. They fly over my house when they practice for their air shows.
Mine too! NAS Pensacola is the best!
@@MommaBird52 NAS Norfolk, here!
@@sharonburris3873 I love Norfolk too. Beautiful there. Two Angels are our neighbors and so nice and kind. The rest of their air shows are cancelled for this year but they still fly 3 to 4 times a week.
I love this video. Good suggestion. I've seen the Blue Angels a few times...this song is played as they fly...makes me emotional.
Best video EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was beginning my senior year in high school when this video came out and it inspired me to join the 3 years later in 1989.
My sister lives in gulf breeze fl. The angels home base is in pensacola fl we go see them perform all the time, it never gets old!!
I remember being a freshman in high school and seeing the video and the Blue Angeles foe the first time. Its still amazes me.
Good God man . What a band .
Oh Man! I remember when that came out. Back when the BAs were flying the A-4s. I feel old. lol.
I always said if I ever jumped out of a airplane and it was recorded I wanted this song put to it too. One of my absolute favorites.
The song is in "Topgun". And it is a Blue Angel standard. Those are A-4s. They were replaced by FA -18s a long time ago, but it's still awsome to watch. Me, I spent my Navy days working on A-4s, F-14s, H-3s, H-53s, and H-46s. The F-14 is the Greatest fighter ever made.
The Blue Angels just don't look right to me if they aren't in their Hornets. =)
Where is it listed on the soundtrack?
This song isn't in Top Gun.
Thank you Eddie!!!
OMGOSH!! YES!! We vacationed for 25 years in Mexico Beach!! Right down the road from Tyndall!! Every place we ever stayed there is flattened now and I've cried a million tears, after Hurricane Michael. But nothing can stop the US Air Force!! :)
To me this song means the sky is the limit. And if you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything.
First heard this song on the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie and used to listen to it on the soundtrack. Love this song! 💖💖💖
My favorite line from the song: "In the end, on dreams we will depend cause that's what love is made of"
I dont think David Lee Roth could do justice to and belt this song out the way Sammy Hagar did.
Never did attend any air show, however if you were anywhere in Fort Lauderdale during the Air and Sea show you could just literally pull over and look up. Cool!
@Matt Becham hello Mr Becham! I was born in the UK, but now live in the USA. ( so I guess I do get around, huh?🤣)
It’s just one of those songs that can only be sung in a particular style. Sammy Hager’s style and singing can’t be divorced from the music
Between this song and the Top Gun Anthem and Danger Zone all 3 are the perfect anthems for Jets flying around! I've been in love with fighter jets since I was a kid and yes the Blue Angel's are awesome in person.
This music video makes me so happy that I cry everytime i watch it
For me, Van Halen fronted by Sammy Hager was so much better. The music was so much more sophisticated!
More adult oriented
Roth= the bubble gum era
Hagar= the adult version of Van Halen
Not that there's anything wrong with Roth's era with the band, I really really enjoyed the band with Sammy
Unfortunately I never got to see them with Sammy. I saw them with Roth and Gary Cherone who was actually really good as their frontman
I think of the power rangers movie every time I listen to this song 😆
Used to go to clevelands every year. My dad was in the air force (a big country music fan) but he actually watched this video with me and had tears in his eyes. He worked on the planes and missed being around them. He is now buried at Ohio's "Arlington" in Rittman.
Bringing back memories right here.
When being alive was awesome...miss that era like the desert misses the rain
5150, the album this song was on, is the soundtrack of my youth. I can't listen to any song on it without being overcome with nostalgia, but Dreams and Summer Nights are the best.
The best of the best!!
Awesome, both the song and video
The Air Force Thunderbirds will be performing at New Century Air Center in the summer of 2021. Another great team in aerial performances.
I live literally two miles from the end of the flight line of Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. Planes fly over every day without fail but we always go to the air shows! The Blue Angels and The Thunderbirds are just amazing to see in person!
I nominated this song for my high school class song. Luckily, it won out over my friend Sandy’s nomination, Twist and Shout. Seemed to fit nicely with being released out into the world. And seeing as probably half the kids that went to our school lived on the Navy base, the Blue Angels tie in was a plus.
Whenever they were in town for a show, our teachers would hold class outside sometimes. I can remember watching one practice from the tree in my friend Mike’s backyard.
I’ve seen the Blue Angles there awesome 🤟🇺🇸
That guitar work between 4:16-4:20 still trips me out. As a kid when this came on I didn't move an inch. Never seen an air show or made it to a Van Halen concert. I'm kicking myself in the ass!!! Now the loss w Eddie I'm tempted to ride the Busa down to Miramar. R.I.P. Eddie y'all take care& God bless
Blue Angels used to do shows every year in my city, they were amazing. I miss them...they haven't been around here in years
True story... In 1986, the US Navy, offered Warner Brothers a stock footage of past 'Blue Angels' shows, with the intention to create a music video to promote both, the song and also be used as part of the US Navy recruitment program. A copy of the video was provided to MTV and VH1 and the video itself has become the classic soundtrack of our lives. Not to mention that the Navy got a lot of viewers attention that they had a record breaking prospects for the 'Blue Angels' program and quite surprising that both Warner Music and Van Halen approved the video with no cost to them and being used as a recruitment tool for younger generations instead.
This song was huge with out the Blue Angels, but I'm thrilled that you did the Blue Angels version of this song. There is another more recent version with the "newer" F/A-18 jets in high definition. Check it out along with the Blue Angels to Motely Crew's Kick Start My Heart".
True that!!
