I disagree on the dining front. Hayward actually has some great restaurants to eat and more coming along with a Sprouts, In and Out, Habit Burger, Raising Canes etc coming soon. I’m from chicago too :)

I reside in Hayward's new downtown townhomes, and it's been great. It's a very clean, peaceful town with extremely friendly people, fostering a strong neighborhood vibe. I work remotely for META in Menlo Park but only have to go into the office Monday through Wednesday, and one of my four kids is homeschooled but enrolled in coding academies near Apple Park HQ on the weekends, so making friends is easy for him. The other three kids attend Cal State University East Bay, Stanford University, and Santa Clara University, all of which have good computer science programs and professors whom I've met at tech events. Hayward is probably one of the safest cities in the East Bay, and the southern part of the East Bay is overall pretty safe, with cities like Union City and Fremont close by. The only concern I've had as a 10-year resident is the occasional car break-ins and disruptive behavior from unhoused individuals, which is extremely rare and has gone down over the years statically by FBI data. However, a friend mentioned an incident where an unhoused person knocked a drink from a college student's hand randomly while walking downtown. The town also boasts excellent public schools, a picturesque downtown adorned with green-themed city lights, and a strong sense of safety due to the new police presence parked downtown. It's very relaxed and accepting of LGBTQIA+ individuals and speakers of all languages (not just the historical Spanish and English speaking communities), with a push for the preservation of the Ohlone Native American language, etc. The downtown area offers top-notch service and plenty of dog-friendly parks. Although it's expensive, the community thrives with nearby colleges like Cal State University East Bay, Chatbot College, and within commuting distance of UC Berkeley and Stanford University. This attracts creative individuals and fosters success among local students. With its recent surge in an affluent atmosphere due to tech and an increase in Hayward High School students attending CSUEB, expect to see more upscale shops and restaurants. Overall, it's a beautiful place close to other charming towns like Palo Alto, Castro Valley, Union City, Fremont, and Redwood City.

I live in San Lorenzo, right next to Hayward and know it well. Traffic is a big problem for this area especially with all the new construction along Mission Blvd.
