Bought one of these today, dead easy to use, diagnosed a small problem that I had and I can only imagine what a garage would have charged me. I highly recommend and I'm a car novice, £20 in Euro Car Parts. It is simple as you said but its a great initial tool for diagnosing.

We are going to err on the side of no as it is a simple device for reading engine codes and in our experience of using it on a 2006 VW Golf 1.9tdi it did clear a turbo overboost code that we had appear at the time of ownership. I think you may have to look elsewhere for devices that may help you with this feature.
I have used it to clear an Engine Management Light that had appeared on a 2006 Golf 1.9TDI that I used to own where the failing turbo started to throw up codes and it seemed to work ok. Not sure if it would work with your car but if you have the receipt and you have checked with Aldi to see if they would except the unit back if it didn't work then it might be worth considering giving it a try as long as you are confident that it wouldn't affect your car in any other way. Alternatively you could get in touch with a few of the forums that are relevant to your car to see if anyone could suggest an ODB2 scan tool that would be more compatible with your car. Hi there, I personally don't think that it would be of much help unless the car's ECU reported it as a fault which I am not sure if it would do. If I were you I would initially pop on a Hyundai forum and list your issues there and see if anyone can help you further or have experienced the same issues. Sorry I can't be of more help. Sorry to read that your EML light has come on. The OBD2 sensor featured in this video from Aldi should, in theory, work with your car via the OBD2 port that most modern cars have and that would include your Polo. It is hard to say what information it would highlight but I have used this on a 2006 Golf 1.9TDi and it came up with a few trouble codes and I could clear them using this item to see if they would come up again, as I was having turbo issues with the Golf which is a common problem. It worked well for the money I paid but you do have to bear in mind that it is a very simple unit and if you want more advanced features then you may have to look elsewhere. What I would suggest is if you were to purchase it then keep your receipt and packaging and double check with Aldi if you can return it if is wasn't compatible with your car. Hope it helps. It would be very hard for me to say as unfortunately I have never had to clear a number plate dashboard light. Saying that it did clear an engine management light on a 2006 golf tdi but that was more engine related than electrical. It might be worth trying a few forums that are related to your car to see if they can suggest an obd2 diagnostic tool that they know that can help you with what you are aiming to achieve. I am afraid it is hard to say. In theory as long as it has an OBD2 port (which all modern cars should have) then you should be able to plug in most car diagnostic tools to see if there are any codes that are saved in the car's ECU giving you an idea of any issues that the car may be experiencing. The only thing with Aldi's OBD2 car diagnostic scan tool is that it is super simple in how it works and what information is being displayed, meaning that it may not be as in-depth as something that it more tailored to a newer VAG product like your Audi TT. I have tried Aldi's OBD2 scan tool on a few cars that have had a few issues in the past like a 2014 Kia Rio, 2010 Nissan Micra, 2010 Ford Fiesta and finally a 2006 Golf and it did display a list of trouble codes that each of the cars had, so it did work in it's simplistic way for them. All I can say is that if you are confident that you can try the scan tool out knowing that you can get a refund if it doesn't work then it is worth a shot alternatively it might be worth dropping onto a Audi forum and seeing if anyone has used a OBD2 scan tool on a car like yours and see if they could recommend the one they use. Yes that Manual is handy. Does it come with the scanner? If not what's it called, where can I get one and what price? Nice review btw. These are currently in my local Aldi. Gonna get one for my son so he doesn't make the same mistake twice. He's going through the courts to get a refund on his recent £4k purchase.
Thank you for commenting. The review unit we purchased at this time last year did come with both the leaflet manual and scanner that was featured on the video. Not sure what Aldi are including within the one they are selling this year but it is worth considering as it is a self-powered fairly easy to use unit but please bear in mind that the information it gives is very simple and not as extensive as other more costlier units that are available on the likes of amazon etc.
Like he said hes no mechanic...makes me wonder why some people do these videos on things they have no idea about. As a mechanic first thing i can tell everyone these scanners cant comunicate with every car they plug into...many vehicles run different operating protocols and if the scanner doesnt support a certain protocol then its useless. The very cheap ones will only pick up possibly engine fault codes but not things like ABS etc. It also depends on the year of your vehicle, 90% of the code readers on the market today will only communicate with vehicles after 2001 and before that you will need to research a specific reader for you vehicle. I have a holden vectra 2000 and so far after trying at least 6 different scanners from the very cheap to the more advanced and im yet to find one that will comunicate with the vehicle.

Sorry for the very late reply, as it so happens the other day my car had a check engine light which I read with this scan tool and it highlighted a code that I was aware of the car featuring in the past and yes I was able to clear the check engine light and code that was given at the time. As many have said, a cheap code reader like these can be useful when shopping for a motor, BUT ONLY if the seller doesn't have their own reader in order to clear any codes on a dodgy motor just before a viewing, in those instances only if the fault is constant & throws up a warning on every start of the vehicle (or within the time taken for a short test drive) will a reader be useful. If a problem does only pop up later (intermittent) & the vehicle is sold as seen (private sales, etc) then there's no redress. Even if it's a trade sale with some form of warranty you'll only have a claim if the fault is for a component that's covered by the warranty. SO DON'T RELY ON A READER ALONE.
You have/had the same fault I have, VW overboost (from a reply to an earlier post). In my experience with turbo diesels, the VW is the worst. It's forever in the shop hunting for the overboost problem. My Renault Grand Scenic is a much better motor in every respect. And the Alfa diesel JTDM is so much better than the VW. But thanks for the review, it will help me with a purchase decision.

We did have the same issue as you had mentioned and we have read that it can be quite a common problem, especially as the variable vein actuators on the turbos tend to clog up with carbon thus throwing up an engine code when they couldn’t open and close freely, putting the car into limp mode. As you have said we have never experienced this problem with any other brand we have owned in the past nor the Kia Rio diesel that we have just acquired, review coming soon. Have to say that the Aldi OBD2 reader has been great. Though it is really simple in its features, it read the problem codes with no issues and we could even clear them which was an added bonus! So we hope the video has helped you in making the right purchase decision and we wish you many years of reliable motoring with your Renault and Alfa Romeo (which must be a great car to drive).
